    The Chicago Bulls traded for Josh Giddey for Alex Caruso last week. I wanted to look at Giddey's playstyle and breakdown his strengths, weaknesses, and how I think the Bulls should be using Giddey within the halfcourt offense.

    Best inbound passer in the league. Terrific pick up for Chicago.

      He's the SLOB wizard!
      If the Bulls make the correct decision to reset, I think this move helps and we'll see how good Giddey can be
      I still think the Bulls didn't get enough for Caruso, tho, which is why I still don't think it was a good trade value wise. But hopefully the Bulls choose the right direction

    Giddey is a better facilitator in half-court offense than Ball.

    • @theslamduncan
      @theslamduncan  17 дней назад +8

      I agree with this
      I also think Giddey has a much higher ceiling in terms of halfcourt playmaking
      He has a lot of work to do, but the playmaking potential is there, and he probably needs to increase his scoring to get the most out of his playmaking

      If you combined the two players you’d have one of the top pg in the league. I actually think they could complement each other well.

    In his presser he made a point that he was gonna work on his defense and i think that reads well. Obviously he knows his struggles and he knows its obvious so it could be performative but i think atleast acknowledging it gives me hope that under Billy's system that improvement can come.

    • @theslamduncan
      @theslamduncan  17 дней назад +2

      Actions speak louder than words, so we'll have to see. But like u said, it's good that he acknowledged his weakness and said he wants to improve on them
      I think it's going to be hard to get a good read on Giddey's defense this season tho. If the rest of the team is full of bad defenders, then everyone is going to look bad defensively. Giddey could make improvements, but we might not see it
      So I'm very interested to see what changes AK makes to the roster

    First break down that has me excited, he could end up a top 10 assist guy with the current core (minus Demar 😢)

    • @theslamduncan
      @theslamduncan  16 дней назад +2

      He could be a top 10 assist guy, but in my opinion, his scoring needs to improve first for that to happen
      And you're right that DeRozan needs to be off this team to let Giddey do his thing

    Great analysis, accurate depiction of positives and negatives. Giddey displays a penchant for craftiness in passing, vision and building some unpredictability into his offensive game. But it looks like he yields with little or no fight if contested at the rim. I would have loved to have seen some detail on his defense, but maybe that’s better discussed after some progress is noticeable.

    • @theslamduncan
      @theslamduncan  16 дней назад +1

      I appreciate the feedback! Thank you for watching
      I do like Giddey's facilitating ability. But you're absolutely right that he needs to finish better at the rim. I do think that will improve as he gets stronger, but it will be in question until we see it improve
      I didn't want to talk about his defense in this vid. I think the consensus is that he's a bad defender so I wanted to show other areas of his game that needs to improve. It's also hard to find specific clips where Giddey isn't playing good defense and it's worth breaking down

  • @james3744

    As an Australian, I've watched almost all his games. Last season wasn't great due to a combination of off-court AND J Williams development. Between SGA and J-DUB they dominate the ball, add in Chet and to a lesser degree Dort, there was not much left for Giddey. Using him off the ball, simply does not make use of his skills and maximizes his weaknesses.
    I hope that this off-season and being traded (especially after the dallas series) I hope he works on his weaknesses. If there is no improvement his career is limited:
    I agree mostly with SlamDuncan:
    - he needs to improve his defensive effort, too many times he makes a swipe at the ball and that's his defense. I cannot tell if he mainly gets beaten due to physical limitations or out of his poor effort/hussle (see comments at end of this post)
    - he needs to work on his left, its not currently good enough for the NBA (a lot of his finishing misses are left hand related)
    - he needs to work on his athleticism, he needs to get stronger and needs to work on his jumping ability (I think he has cruised by on natural playmaking IQ). I see no reason why he cannot get to the point where he drives and dunks
    - he needs to be more physical, I see him getting to 6'8" 225-228 pounds and he needs to impose himself on other guards (like Luka does)
    Funnily his old man was a defensive player that was the hussle king in the Australian basketball league.

    Great content. The data analysis play breakdowns im a big fan of. But on Pwill and the rebs If opposing teams wings r taking jumpshots and pwill is guarding them i have a hard time seeing him attempt to block a shot and grab the reb play after play. And contested rebs i saw vuc get outworked way more than pwill but everyone praises vuc reb numbers. They should b way higher but vuc cant jump. If pwill has to continuously always guard the opposing teams best player he won't b able to grab as many rebs as fans want unfortunately

    • @theslamduncan
      @theslamduncan  16 дней назад +1

      So I've seen this argument about P-Will guarding guys taking shots, and that's why he's not in position for rebounds
      I just can't agree bc Caruso was the guy guarding the best perimeter player and yet he avg 0.1 less rebounds than P-Will last season. He's also significantly smaller than P-Will. Idc if P-Will is guarding the best player or not. He can't be getting the same amount of rebounds as Alex Caruso and his rebounds per game have declined every season
      You're right that Vuc is a god-awful rebounder. People who say "double-double machine" like Stacey King don't understand just how bad his rebounding is. But that gives all the more reason why for P-Will to be getting more rebounds

    • @robertantol6191
      @robertantol6191 16 дней назад

      @theslamduncan all true also ac wasn't always on the court at all times especially starting like pwill has with the big 3 since 2021 but inj also affected pwill and mins were around the same but ac and pwill were both ur 2 best on balld defenders 1 or the other were likely to be guarding the shooter. How often were both of them on the court together too I would ask cuz if not as much that makes sense to y either didn't have more rebs than the other. Also in the modern nba with more emphasis on 3s means more longer rebs so everyone has to box out and reb

    • @theslamduncan
      @theslamduncan  16 дней назад

      You're absolutely correct that he's one of the best inbound passers in the league
      I think a lot of people know that tho, so I didn't want to focus too heavily on that in this vid. I wanted to show his strengths in other areas, specifically how he'd fit into the halfcourt offense
      But I expect him to be the inbound passer at all times this season

    • @thesecretwombat056
      @thesecretwombat056 16 дней назад

      wasn''t carried by a good team at all, all of his great attributes have to do with having the ball in his hands and he didn't have that on a good team. His best season so far was when the thunder wasn't very good and he had the ball in his hands more.

    • @theslamduncan
      @theslamduncan  16 дней назад

      Last year, he was just a role player
      I think we'll get a good idea of how good he can be this upcoming season. I do think that his ceiling is capped and he won't become the best player on a championship team. Maybe not even the 2nd best player. But ideally, the Bulls let him do his thing and we evaluate him from there

      P-Will would win if he's allowed to jump off both feet
      If only 1 foot is allowed....

    if you can’t shoot 50% on your wide open 3’s then you are awful
    giddy has to play SF since he is so slow defensively which will negate a lot of his size.
    giddy is an interesting prospect but he is obviously your #3 wing defender and he really has to fix his jumper.
    lets say the Bulls had drafted ron holland. would holland, giddy and pwill have worked out? probably.

    • @theslamduncan
      @theslamduncan  16 дней назад

      I agree
      DeRozan can not be on this roster next season, but I honestly think the FO wants to bring him back
      I'd salary dump Vuc immediately, but nobody wants him. Maybe Brooklyn takes him now with the Bridges trade, but idk what asset we can attach to get rid of him
      And it's evident LaVine will be gone at some point. Not sure when. If he's still on the roster at the beginning of the season, it's not the end of the world.

      They aren't good. It's a serious problem
      But as the P-Will believers say "He's only 22! You can't give up on him now!"
      Not saying I've fully given up on him, but I'm definitely not giving him $25 mil annually this offseason

    the Nba is all about 3 and d and drive and kick. AK still hasn’t figured this out.
    you actually don’t even need a point gaurd per-say.
    i am not sure why AK is obsessed with players with short arms who don’t move well laterally who can shoot.
    players like matas, giddy and vuc have a real low probability of success. they are #5 starters.

    • @jdh9676

      Coby might play Giddey off the court like SGA did🤗

    • @theslamduncan
      @theslamduncan  16 дней назад +1

      Ehhhh
      I think the whole "true point guard" stuff just isn't that meaningful in today's game
      His passing and awareness is very good. But for him to take the next step in his playmaking, his scoring needs to improve first.
      U want players who can score and playmake with the ball most of the time. If giddey is only a passer, it's just not worth putting the ball in his hands
      That's why I'm very focused on his improvement to score this upcoming season
