It's been awhile since I've uploaded some live performances - I'll be uploading selections from my recent concert in El Paso, Texas as part of the 25th Anniversary of the El Paso Chopin Festival in the coming weeks. I hope you enjoy them! A special thanks to Dr. Lucy Scarbrough for inviting me to perform.
the main reason why people who dont enjoy classical music is bcoz the cant understand the joy of playing the piece but somehow josh wright has bypassed this by really forcing us to listen to the beautiful inner voices and i bet everyone will enjoy this. Great performance josh
Josh, I have not listened to this Scherzo with intent since my own student years, nor have I heard you play a concert work of its stature before. You have taken me back to a time in my musical life when things were a little more potent than do they feel at present, and the world of the piano was an Aladdin's cave full of bejewelled and glittering treasures. This piece was one such treasure. The images it conjured up for me then, they are still with me now just as they once were, but years later and through you. How wonderful is that, that Music is such a transportive and nostalgic art. That it should suspend Time as it does, yet all the while regulating it. I enjoyed your performance. Thank you!
Beautiful, i love that you showed all the 'colours' of this wonderful piece. Many times they play it all very loud and fast, only like a virtuosistic piece and they ruine the melody and the sweetness inside. Thank you
Amazing performance. Josh thinks through every note, phrase, dynamic. His ability to interpret Chopin is second to none. He is also a wonderful and generous teacher. I am proud to be considered one of his pupils.
Josh your performance came to me like an epiphany in the wee hours this morning here in New York City.. To both see and hear this piece played by someone with your enormous talents and years of hard work is a real privilege. I say this as a professional musician grateful for an opportunity to hear music with new ears, as I did hearing you play. I have watched many of your teaching videos but this absolutely bowled me over. Thank you thank you thank you.
My mother used to practise this peace after she tucked me and my brothers in bed. She played it very much like this rendition. So many performances seem more focused on the speed - but this has more an air of nostalgia and pensiveness. Beautiful.
Very nice. Personally, I like your sensitivity to clarity, touch, and rubato. You have a full sound, yet maintain crisp melodic voicing. Shinny phrases everywhere! Thanks.
Hey very nice interpretation. Your touch is very soft almost like chopin described it should be. I recomend reading the book "chopin pianist and teacher" toapproach what is like to play as chopin did
What a wonderful performance!! Your tutorials and videos are always extremely helpful and high quality. I can't wait to see what pieces you tackle next :)
Micki thank you...that section is one of my two favorite spots in all of Chopin’s music. The other is the transition back into the main theme of Etude op.25 no.5. Some sections of the E minor Concerto are a close second
at 4:48 I lile it better when you can clearly hear the left like in schumanns performance but that is just my view. martha argerich plays the right hand very clearly and you can really hear the left hand melody at that part
Josh, thank you so MUCH for sharing this with us. I can only imagine the incredible preparations! Wonderful, masterful playing! This piece is a favorite of ours in our home. My daughter and I are both pianists.
Bravo Josh! What a beautifull rendition of This Scherzo. Everything you do seems so logical but it's damn hard to build up such an interpretation. Also pretty Ti look at, all movements looks very organised.
@@yahyamhirsi And you don't see me being overly negative about the performance due to that error, do you? ;p. I still enjoyed the performance, and like I said in my initial comment, I am just glad he got it under control again
Now you have two options Either you sit at home and think that you such Or you get motivated and practice dedicated for a long time and effieciently so that you can play this
Joachim Schuster learn to enjoy playing easier but still beautiful works. I often listen to piano arrangements of Bach’s Sheep May safely graze. Very beautiful, but ( relatively speaking) easy, at least easy compared to what Mr. Wright is playing.
What an absolutely magnificent performance, my favourite part is at 4:40. Thank you Josh Also could you maybe do a tutorial on the Schubert impromptu in A flat major (op 90 no 4)?
I'm just here because Rubinstein plays it too fast for me to enjoy it haha. Great job man, this is my favorite piece and your rendition is definitely my favorite!
Amazing playing Josh, been watching your vids for a while, you give great insight into the world of music and what it takes to play at a virtuosic level. Piano a bit bright imo for this piece but you adapted to that extremely well as usual.
A very nice, solid, artistic performance. My only comment is that the trills at 2:14 technically should not be played with the double grace note. Chopin almost always WROTE the lower neighbor notes that way but performance practice dictates otherwise.
Interesting interpretation, was it based on the way any other pianists have played it or is it your own one? My favourite will always be that of Zimerman :)
The performance is pretty good, especially regarding it's a one-take. But I really didn't like the instrument. Too metallic, and it doesn't seem to allow for great dynamics changes or need enough effort to play. Did you have the same feeling?
It depends really, this piece doesn't have crazy exhausting parts, for instance comparing it to Winterwind, the piece has no pause and that's one of the problems with it. Sherzo has some stopping points to emphasize the melody and doesn't require the power of Winterwind. Phrasing also helps maintain some energy.

I didn't even think about using both hands at 1:34. I've been practicing it with one hand all day and it is a BEAST that way.
Who else could make the piano 'sing' like this but Chopin? A lovely and brilliant interpretation here by Josh Wright.
Beautiful, i love that you showed all the 'colours' of this wonderful piece. Many times they play it all very loud and fast, only like a virtuosistic piece and they ruine the melody and the sweetness inside. Thank you
this might be my favourite recording of this piece. no other pianist breathes life into it so well. a big part of this is the tempo
Amazing performance. Josh thinks through every note, phrase, dynamic. His ability to interpret Chopin is second to none. He is also a wonderful and generous teacher. I am proud to be considered one of his pupils.
I think I found my favorite recording.
Most underrated version on RUclips, I loved it!!!
I gave it a like so it will reach more people. Defently underrated
That middle slow section I’m not sure if it’s the second movement but every time that opening chord gives me chills
Thank you for the wonderful performance

Wow...you bring a freshness and clarity to this much loved work that I’ve never heard before! Bravo!!

papikabron18 thank you! I’ll check it out - I believe I read some of it a few years ago but need to revisit it
Amazing

Agamaz thanks!
Just amazing, Josh!
Great performance of this work. at 9:05 You even made the piano rumble!
I've watched this video before but I came back because this is a beautiful interpretation and one of my favorite Chopin pieces. Great performance!
What a wonderful performance!! Your tutorials and videos are always extremely helpful and high quality. I can't wait to see what pieces you tackle next :)

Incredible performance

Important to know where to hold back with Chopin (6:16) Wonderful job, exciting finale!
Micki thank you...that section is one of my two favorite spots in all of Chopin’s music. The other is the transition back into the main theme of Etude op.25 no.5. Some sections of the E minor Concerto are a close second

I think that she takes it a bit too fast. Still an excellent interpretation, but I prefer Zimmerman's. Just slightly though.
I used to play this. Great performance, Josh.
Bravo l'artiste !
Patrice PASCAL thanks Patrice!
Very nice performance, thank you.
Love your interpretation!
Anna Khomichko Pianist thank you Anna
Wondering playing, Josh. The tuning of the piano is great but the tone is very bright.
Oh man I didn't realize the audience was in front of the camera the whole time
So beautiful!
Josh, this was exquisite.
So polished that I had to put my sunglasses on to watch.
Beautiful
Josh, thank you so MUCH for sharing this with us. I can only imagine the incredible preparations! Wonderful, masterful playing! This piece is a favorite of ours in our home. My daughter and I are both pianists.

Bro Josh, bravooo ! U made it :)
I'm sure U practiced on this piece for days.
Well done ✌🏻

8:08 Did you get lost for a second there? Thank god you got it under control again ;p. Great performance!
Oh man that is one of my nightmaires.
@@CanSakkaoglu same
He obviously did, and that's a common thing to happen to humans by the way. It's called "error". Pianists are also humans!
@@yahyamhirsi And you don't see me being overly negative about the performance due to that error, do you? ;p. I still enjoyed the performance, and like I said in my initial comment, I am just glad he got it under control again
@@jordidewaard2937 sorry, I misunderstood you then! My mistake ;)

Angel Gr haha

Wow that‘s amazing, thank you so much already. I‘m looking forward to it^^
And no 3 and 2 please:-))
Great performance
Yousef Shadian Thanks Yousef!

I'm just here because Rubinstein plays it too fast for me to enjoy it haha. Great job man, this is my favorite piece and your rendition is definitely my favorite!
It's so hard for me to play this dynamically correct and with clarity.
Good job!
Can you do a tutorial for sherzo no 1
Amazing playing Josh, been watching your vids for a while, you give great insight into the world of music and what it takes to play at a virtuosic level. Piano a bit bright imo for this piece but you adapted to that extremely well as usual.
Chester SD thanks Chester - agreed...the piano wasn’t great haha
Grand bravo ! Not an easy acoustic, very dry, but magnificent result !
Al D thank you!
I thinks the effect he wanted
Amazing piece. Will take me ~10 years to play it :(
No, it will not, jeep practicing and you can do it in 2 months
Bravo! El mejor!!!
This isn't my kind of music but I love the way your fingers so effortlessly and beautifully move over the piano
moveuself thank you for your kindness
Josh you great!!!! Love your performances, what do you think about Paul Barton's rendition of this piece??)
A very nice, solid, artistic performance. My only comment is that the trills at 2:14 technically should not be played with the double grace note. Chopin almost always WROTE the lower neighbor notes that way but performance practice dictates otherwise.
I came to see that climax you've been working so hard to get perfect ;)
Wow, amazing :-)
Beautiful Interpretation - Shared with thanks to Mescallsmelodie Group.

Wow

My favourite will always be that of Zimerman :)
Yeah, this great! Check Paul Bartons interpritation!
8:07
Nice save. That's super hard to do with an audience.
This piece I like performed by Lang Lang, its more alive, but your performance is very emotive, and love your ProPractice videos!
How did you get the left hand quiet in the con anima section?
The performance is pretty good, especially regarding it's a one-take.
But I really didn't like the instrument. Too metallic, and it doesn't seem to allow for great dynamics changes or need enough effort to play. Did you have the same feeling?
Hans Müller yes, it was an old beat-up Baldwin that wasn’t well-regulated. You do the best with what you’re given haha
I thought you did wonderfully!
What kind of piano did you play?
Wow! How long did you practice for this piece?
Why doesn’t the performance get exhausting? Like I can barely play a piece to it’s full 3 mins let alone 10mins to an hour performance
Absolutely amazing. How can you remember that all without reading the music?!?
