Here is a performance of the third ballade by Frédéric Chopin from my recent concert in El Paso, Texas as part of the 25th Anniversary of the El Paso Chopin Festival. I hope you enjoy it! A special thanks to Dr. Lucy Scarbrough for inviting me to perform. I wish you all the best for another great week of practicing.
Dr. Wright thank you for being a constant inspiration in my music career. I think ive bought just about every propractice. You are an amazing teacher and pianist!
This is phenomenal. Think I might have asked on one of your other performances, but how can you remember the whole piece without any music!? Especially when and for how long go mp, mf etc. Just months and months and months of playing it over and over?
I first heard this done (the ascending alto melody) in bars 109-112 and corresponding measures 150-153. It's not indicated in my Paderewski edition but I first heard it articulated by Philippe Entremont and I copied it. The great French pianist also emphasizes the b natural in the chord bar 93 as it modulates from a d flat the previous measure. Interesting, By the way he is still with us and is Conductor Laureate with Vienna Chamber Orchestra and Israel Chamber orchestra. (Wiki)
Thank you, Josh, for that excellent performance. I think this ballade is more accessible to those of us who are still climbing the ladder of pianistic success. So I have made it my goal to make this piece my own. Yours is a great example of a balanced reading of brilliant finishing section and the stately mezza voce intro.
I love this song! I had to learn it for school two years and loved it, but had to stop playing it because the 3rd to last page gave me too much tension in my arms...
H Janelle oh sorry to hear that, it’s very technically challenging, so it happens from time to time even to profis...maybe you should take some lessons from a good teacher who can help you with that
@@AnnaKhomichkoPianist I go to the Conservatory, and am working on my bachelor's, and it was there that it happened... I have a problem with not getting tense when I play.
I play keyboard but classical piano is my other passion; and this one is one of my favorites . I don't play well like you; but i am a very good classical and particular Chopin listener. Josh, you have mastered the techniques and there is satisfying sufficiency of nuances and balancing and everything, including calmness and distinctive executing style. My congratulations and I wish you the best in your career as a professional pianist. Mindfully, I like to see you “sweating” a little more: playing this super high caliber piece a little different , more improvising and daring with flamboyance and dancing like. I feel this piece still not moody enough and i am still not dancing seating here ; as Christian Zimmermann would make me dance; you know what i mean- its not that he plays technically better than you here but he plays it poetically and sweating and i think you can do it ; as this is Chopin at his most joyfulness and swinging and out-bursting and everything in between. Its his show piece and all these moody guys are show pieces any way. Sincerely , Dan
Good lord, this beauty of an instrument again -.- But still, an incredible performance! I think it will find its way to my permanent collection of music ;) At the beginning I thought it was a bit too academic, but the transition to the more emotional part was great! Really loved it!
Hey Josh, Great performance! I was wondering if you are familiar with Kapustin’s Concert Etudes? Please do a pro practice tutorial on his 6th Etude, Pastoral. Thank you
I find this performance as your second best, after Paganini etude no.6 in A m. Its one of my favourite performances ever. As the best performance I find chopin 10. 2. by Dmitri Shinkin its unbelieveble. I recommand this performance is flawless.
Hi Josh, I’m currently working on Beethoven’s 7th sonata. I’m struggling to keep the triplets in the right hand (in the Trio of the 3rd movement) quiet and consistent in volume and timing. Are there any tips you could give me to help me get around this, possibly direct me to a video of yours which could help me? Your playing is truly a gift and I have a huge about of envy and jealously over your talent! I have dreams of becoming a concert pianist and I know that is going to take a huge amount of work. Keep up the fabulous work!
Can someone please tell me if you need to be able to reach more than an octave during 2:57? If so, how much over? I can do one over. I’m used to improvising with my tiny girl hands but I really don’t want to have to change anything about how orgasmic that part sounds
Emma Piercy I’m pretty sure it doesn’t go over an octave, but if it does then you could roll it. I know there are some spots where the left hand plays over an octave but you can easily roll those notes.
Chords at 3:08 and 3:11 are the only ones that are over an octave that I have trouble with with my hands, it’s G flat, C, A flat. I can just about hit it but it’s a stretch for sure!
You're an amazing teacher I'm sure otherwise you wouldn't get as many followers but as someone who's watched only top piano performers, your performance is boring.. I can see that you've practiced a lot but I'd like to see you let loose.. Have you tried being tipsy while playing this piece or any piece for that matter?
@@jonarmstrong6214 ik, it's such stupid comment, can't he just enjoy it and compliment the performance, not look down on it, it's a fantastic performance
Jon Armstrong you don't need to be a chef to know that the food is boring... Obviously he is a gazillion times better than you or me but I am putting an opinion out there to just say what I think, which may very well help his playing.. Have you watched kissin or yuja wang? And if not for positive criticism, then what's the point? Be stagnant and not progress?
@@richardbautista503 well his playing of piano may be different, you can't just tell a pianist to change his way of playing piano or it's just an insult
@@richardbautista503 also mentioning I'm a pianist, and if someone told me that (which they have before) it was incredibly rude and ridiculous, especially how it came from a beginner

They got a Chopin festival in Texas! Nice!
Am I the only one who likes the video before it even starts because you already know it's going to be that good
no not really
With pianists like Josh, you can't go wrong with that.

The phrasing is 100% to my taste. I love how you emphasize the E-flat at 4:07. I love that you don’t speed up at 6:31 and rush through the coda. ❤
For an "old, beat-up Baldwin" it sure sounded pretty good.
Kick ass coda, Josh!
Beautiful playing. Good job Mr Wright!!! ♥️🎹🎶
Simply beautiful! Chopin is so much “your” composer!
5:25 was awesome, it's my favorite part. Nice playing Josh :)
Sure, its climax hh
i think that is most peoples favorite part
You’ve got me hooked on ballade no 3! I’ve always been a ballade no 4 and no 1 fan
I love the interesting interpretation with bringing out the inner melodies, it's different, but refreshing!

Love your tutorials. But I'm mostly here for your performances. Well done!
No way! I was listening to this when I got your notification
What an amazing flawless performance, bravo 👏 I wish I can play this like you do some day
Got no words for just how superb that was.
Wonderful handling of the dynamics!
I can tell it’s great by the first seconds. As I go on writing it just get better, congrats Josh!
You have the sensuality of Ivan Moravec's and the power of Krystian Zimerman's 3rd Ballade in this particular performance. How is this even possible!?
Love it!! Absolutely stunning performance!
Christine Jung i loved it too!
