Is THIS the Most Useful Tool for Architecture Photography?

  • When looking for a tripod head for architecture photography it’s important to know what to avoid. As a rule, try and avoid anything cheap. That’s not to say that cheap can’t be good but if you’re willing to trust thousands of pounds worth of equipment to a head which you spent a tenner on then I would recommend spending what you saved on some good insurance.
Also, try and avoid getting a ball head. They’re usually cheaper than a traditional tripod head and on paper they can seem like a good buy.
Many of the current ball heads can hold an impressive weight - and usually in a light package, however when precision is the name of the game - these are going to be an issue.
For architecture and interior photography, precision is one of the aims of the game. Making minor adjustments with a ball head is almost impossible, even with a ballhead friction control you’re always going to be fighting against the weight of the camera and some resulting sag when you let go of the camera.
That’s why for architectural photography I would recommend looking at a geared tripod head. If you want absolute control of your camera position for your architecture photography a geared tripod head is the way to go.

Have you used a geared head? I have a new piece of gear coming next month that is going to assist me in creating unique perspectives - keep a look out for that!

Yep, I got fed up with ball heads, way too fiddly when doing landscapes. Saw one of your episodes where you were talking about geared heads, got to play with one by Benro and added it to my kit, total transformation :)

Ohhh you have one! Yes, I am going back to the Benro once this fails. The best for the price tbh! 😊

@@JamesKerwin Actually I blame you James for two bits of kit I purchased after watching your videos, geared tripod heads and a tilt/shift lens ! Both of which I have found great bits of kit for specific situations :)

@@johnhaynes9910 - Damn it, what a nightmare! I have another bit of kit coming that is at least less expensive. In other news, the 17mm TSE has crashed in price this year.

Which Benro version have you got?

It's probably the best thing I've bought apart from my law shift converter, I got the benro version to match my tripod but I wouldn't be without it..

I think I have converted several people after them using mine this weekend 😉
The latest Sunway now has an adjustment on the top section as well meaning all three panes are adjustable

James, which geared head to do prefer: The Sunway or the Benro? I have been using the Manfrotto geared head 410 for many years in architectural photography. I like it but it is not fluid enough for me and adjustments are very slow.

Hey! I think I prefer the Benro - its a solid bit of kit. The sunway is slimmer though! Easier to fit in a bag 🎒 👌
