I was at a friend's house not long ago. We've both been playing for many (5+) decades with probably 40 or more guitars between us. He asked me to show him something I said I'd been working on. I couldn't play a f'n note!! Completely locked up. Talk about embarrassment!! I can play fine in front of other people but I get a serious case of the yips when in front of him. It bothers the shit out of me!

      From north wales.
      66 now,bought, sold,Picked up, put down, gave
      away, been given!
Guitars forever some high end some not, electric
      and acoustic.
My two sons both play in rock bands for decades
Nightmare for me separate bands same night.
      Different venues me unpaid roadie!
They growing up would pick guitars up, and you can guess the rest!
Me, I’ve always struggled with it, working shifts, other projects.
The only guitar I have is an Admira classical concentrated on playing
      that.
Got to play small classical pieces on it over the years, I like
      Steve Hackett and Anthony Philips.
But have to admit I’m in a rut,but know these pieces WELL!
Anyway a very good mate of mine who I don’t see to
often came around a few months back.
We both are into the same stuff he doesn’t play, he
knows my musical involvement with my lads
      and with guitars e.t.c.
So he pointed to my classical guitar and said
Is that the only one you have these days.
And I said yes it is,he said go on play a piece
I’ve heard through the grapevine, no pun
intended, that you can play some nice pieces.
So I picked the guitar up, sat down and
      FROZE!
      KEPT ME AWAKE!
I told my lads, I got some stick I can tell you!
And the wife said the times I’ve heard you play
the same pieces, I can’t believe it!
Sorry about the ramble, but your post really
Got to my inner core, in the meantime my wife
Sent my mate a video of me playing, he phoned to say
Oh you can play a little then.
      Take care.

would it be possible for you to play through the example a couple of times at the beginning of your lessons just so we can get a feel for the music
I play by ear so can pick up a lot by hearing the music so like many of us when you begin the break down we can follow more easily and also it’s good ear training as a bonus
    Thank you for the advice

I never froze at a guitar shop, but I pull a few fast ones on salesmen if I saw them trying to take advantage of beginning players. When they came to me, I would pretend to be a newbie, and play an intentionally botched version of Smoke On The Water, which would convince them I knew nothing about playing guitar. When the salesman would try to sell me a highly over-priced guitar that is far beyond the needs of any beginner, I would ask if I could play it, then I would play an electric version of Mozart's Magic Flute - Queen of the Night Aria. _Shuts them up every time..._

People who work in a guitar store are the coolest? Certainly not in my neck of the woods! They just look at you consescendingly with one eyebrow raised in a "really???" sort of way. Then again I think to myself screw you pal I have a real job with a real salary and I can afford a guitar you can only dream of and if you were half as good as you think you are you would be up there with John Mayer and the liles.
The peeps at the GC in Omaha NE were lovely though. 👍👍👍

    • @jimwing.2178

String squeak can be tamed by lifting the fingers completely off the strings before moving them to a different fret. Alternatively, the player can tilt the fingers and reduce the pressure while sliding to the new fret.

    • @edofcoke

New strings have a tendency to squeak more regardless. I hear it in recordings from professional studios. Focus on his message & try to prevent it on your on, it's tough to completely eliminate it all together.
