My Polish-American Grandfather was already an old man when he joined the army at age 34! He trained in Kansas, was shipped to England on the QM and went to France & Germany shortly after D-Day. Most of his brothers served as well if they were old enough. Everyone made it back that was already here, but the family lost contact with our relatives in Poland forever.

My mother's family lived in Honolulu. They were privy to this history. Most of the civilian damage was friendly fire gone awry. The Japanese decimated airfields and Pearl Harbor anchorages. Watch this film after learning reality on the ground/air/sea of that fateful day.
And at 8:48 in the Newsreel, they show a Curtis SOC Seagull Scout plane from the Heavy Cruiser USS Pensacola or USS Salt Lake City (the first of the USA’s new “Treaty Cruisers” that were limited in Tonnage for any Cruiser to 10,000 tons Displacement, and the “Light Cruiser” was limited to Guns no greater than 6.1”, while the “Heavy Cruiser” was limited to an 8” Main Battery). Although... Now that I look at it again, that looks more like it is one of the Northampton-class CAs (CA-26, CA-27: USS Chester, CA-28: USS Louisville, CA-29: USS Chicago, CA-30: USS Houston, and CA-31: USS Augusta - The Augusta was usually the Ship that Roosevelt used for any long-trips at sea. When he was sworn-in, it was the most Powerful Cruiser-Class in the US Navy. But the Portland-class and New Orleans-class would show-up the Northamptons and Pensacolas). The Northampton-class had a crane made from steel bars/girder, while the Pensacola-class had a crane made from sheet-metal with lightening-holes in it. And the Pensacola-class had no Hangars, which this ship certainly does. The sheet-metal bulkheads supporting the weather deck above the Hangars in the Northampton-class had no perforations or Lightening Holes cit in them, while the Pensacola-class DID have such cutouts. At first I thought that it must be a Pensacola-class because of the lack of 5”/25 DP Guns on the deck surrounding the Aft Funnel. But then I realized that the Northampton-class did not have the additional two 5”/25 DP Guns installed on each Broadside until the completion of the first few New Orleans-class and ALL of the Portland-class (USS Portland, CA-33; and USS Indianapolis, CA-35 - The Portland-class was actually an older design than the New Orleans-class, but CA-32, New Orleans, was finished and commissioned slightly before than of USS Portland, CA-33, and then CA-34, USS Astoria, was finished before USS Indianapolis was completed). Also... The Northampton-class has a steam-pipe that runs up the front of the Aft-Funnel. None of the Pensacola-class (CA-24 USS Pensacola, and CA-25 USS Salt Lake City) has these steam-pipes, and the After Weatherdeck is lower, given it isn’t a hangar, but a shelter for what were 2 4-tube Torpedo Mounts (1-Port/1-Starboard) that the Pensacola-class carried until just before the war.

The shots of civilian damage are actually of December 7th but the real military damage was still censored and could not yet be shown at this point. The ironic thing is that the civilian deaths and destruction that the narrator frequently describes were almost entirely caused by friendly fire by the USA, specifically anti-aircraft shells that didn't explode in the sky to damage Japanese planes but instead detonated when they fell back down to the ground. And there was far less of this than the narrator says.
America only got 6 fighter planes in the sky that morning. Japan lost 29 aircraft during the attack. Newsreel had to make it look like America was strong and fought back hard immediately.

Interesting that at 1:05, just after declaring the “Jap Raiders Attack,” they show a formation of aircraft. A formation of TWO-ENGINED aircraft. A formation of two-engined aircraft that NEITHER CAN: 1) Take-off for a Japanese Carrier in those numbers... And, ... 2P They are NOT JAPANESE AIRCRAFT. At first glance they DO somewhat have the appearance of the Mitsubishi G3M “Nell,” IJN Bomber... But none of those were with the attacking force of the Kido Butai of Pearl Harbor’s Striking Force. Now, the Mitsubishi G3M, Nell DID take part in the attacks on the Philippines and Wake Island (Launched from Truk). The Biplanes were somewhat of a surprise, since the IJN had relegated ALL Biplanes to the roles of Scout and Reconnaissance floatplanes... Usually carried by Cruisers (the Battleships tended to get the faster monoplane Scout and Reconnaissance Floatplanes).
Fun Fact: About half of the Hawai'i citizens that volunteered to defend Hawai'i from Japan in 1941 were second-generation Japanese-Americans. With over 200,000 Japanese-Americans in Hawai'i, only actual Japanese citizens were interned; thousands of Japanese-American young men volunteered quickly for the 100th Battalion, the first Nisei unit, which mustered in McKinley High School.

The targets were the ships, planes, fuel storage. I nearly died of laughter when I saw the RAF Hudson bomber taking off. Plus it depicted Japanese 2 engine land-based bombers (that I'm pretty sure are Mitsubishi Ki-21's) flying, whereas only carrier based aircraft were used in the attack. The footage of civilian areas was very fascinating though. Reminds me of how a bunch of songs were hastily thrown together in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Some turned out quite good, but some were quite terrible.

This was clearly the beginning of the propaganda campaign. The brit plane, those cheesy outdated biplanes the zero's would have ate raw in air combat. The fact is there was barely any response by our airplanes during the surprise raid. The "yellow" man clearly handed us our first taste or thinking we were superior to them, when clearly they were better prepared, better equipped and had more training. There was no way at the time this film was made our media could have done anything other than it did in painting a false picture of the actual events. More importantly, we as citizens of a republic, need to remember our media seeks to misinform us whenever its deemed necessary by our government. If you don't trust your government, why would you trust the media that seeks to represent that government in times of crisis? The founders of this government would have been appalled at the public's ignorance of what was going on due to apathy. This was a snapshot in time. It is a very good lesson for all of us old and young. This is the kind of thing they should be showing in college history classes.
