This is one of the most emotive and beautiful rock songs ever, by anyone. And Chrissie Hynde has the voice of an angel.
And the look of a badass who knows what’s up, and means business. Fantastic combination.
Vastly, hugely underrated band. They were the first rock concert I ever got to see. She gave a shout out to her late bandmates before this song. She also stopped the show for several minutes so the stagehands could chase a cricket off stage before someone in the band accidentally stepped on it. That was really endearing.
This is from Live Aid , the song is about the presures of the media and the music industry . Two of her original band died and she did lose it a bit , fought back tears , guitarist spoke to her to make sure she was ok . Iconic performance with so much emotion
They're a terrific band and she has such a great tone and cadence.
I saw the Pretenders with Elvis Costello at the Rainbow in London.
It's a smaller venue.
She still had the original lineup, James was still alive. That's who this song is about.
At first I wasn't greatly impressed by her, they came out, full on punk energy, but halfway in she started using that amazing voice. She can sing really well.
She's big in her own right but I always thought she should have been much bigger in a mainstream way.
One of my favourite songs by one of my favourite bands. I think that the song was meant to honour Pete Farndon as well, the band's bass player who died of an overdose a year after Honeyman-Scott. Martin Chambers, the drummer in this video is the only other surviving member of the original band.
You talk about Chrissie's passion & emotion coming out through her music and you show us how she does it. We see the passion you have for music and for sharing that with us. Thank you! ☺, PJ
Akron, Ohio's member of the R&R Hall of Fame, and my hometown girl. The pride of Firestone HIgh School, along with the boys from The Black Keys, members of DEVO, and Challenger disaster Astronaut Judy Resnick. She may have come to fame in the UK, but she cut her teeth on Water St. in Kent, along with Joe Walsh and DEVO in the late '60s. She was a student at Kent State when the shootings happened, and left after that for England. She has done good works for Akron over the years, as well as giving her spin on our hometown in "My City Was Gone" (you know the bass line to this, even if you don't know what you're listening to). Not exactly loved by the local Chamber of Commerce, but iconic.
I’m a Zip and I’m proud that I’ve stomped the same grounds as this lovely lady 🫡 and my city was gone… what a track
I saw them many times in the 80's; my last time was at a Friday night Newmarket horse race in 2002, they played the intermission - still sounded fantastic. Thanks for the memories Chrissie!
Just saw them as an opener for GnR, where they played this song. Her singing hasn't aged a day!
This is a professional singer, performing live. Something that doesn't occur very much anymore!

you should listen to morriseys version of this song..i just love his
I just listened to your amazing cover of this classic song! Why aren"t you a star ?!!!
One of the most underappreciated bands and voices in rock history.
The distinctive guitar riff is difficult to hear for most of this clip, but Chrissie's voice is iconic. Reminds me of my teenage years in the 80s. Such great music 😊
Wow I’ve heard this song a lot of times but never seen it live and seeing the emotions just coming out , pretty moving
They were one of my favorite bands when they started out. Still love hearing them.
Saw live back in the 80s in a small venue. Her voice was even better up close and live. Brass in Pocket, My City was Gone, I'll Stand by you. Just a few of many great songs to choose from.
A band I was in a long time ago did a cover of this and I loved playing it. I was the bass player and the bass line is fantastic, really suits the song. I really like how backup vocals do the bit from Sam Cooke's Chain Gang.
Love her! Thanks, Beth. Always get a lift from your musical examination.
always loved the guitar parts on that song, the tele rythm jangle with the strat twang soaring over it. such a reflective, happy sad sound.
one of the best rock singers as well as a great songwriter. Doesn't get 1/10 the appreciation she deserves.
Thanks, Beth! Chrissie is probably my favorite female vocalist... when live, she can sound JUST like the album versions (when she wants to).. .appreciate your reaction.. hope you do more...
This was one of the best & my favorite channel, full of love & positive evergy...I was smiling all the way! Thank u for sharing this awesome episode,Beth💙💝💙
You are so kind
I love the Pretenders, there are many tracks to choose from, my most played is probably "Message of Love" because of the message.
"Now the reason we're here
As man and woman
Is to love each other
Take care of each other"
p.s. Chrissie was great at this years Glastonbury Festival.
i defy anyone to listen to Message of Love's classic riff and not start moving with it
Wow wasn't expecting the pretenders ty
My fave Pretenders song is "Night In My Veins". Brings back a lot of good\bad memories of a specific time in my life.
Chrissie Hynde's reflective guitar. She has said that she liked to use it to look at guys in the crowd that she wanted to "Have Fun" with. ... If you haven't done...Brass In Pocket ... yet get it from .... Pretenders - "Brass in Pocket". VH1 Fashion Awards 1995. You get to see her and her "Side Step"
The man in the yellow suit is, l believe Peter Farndon, an Australian born guitarist who, prior to playing in the Pretenders, was in Australian folk band, the Bushwackers. When he and guitarist James Honeyman Scott both passed away fairly young, then Chrissie Hynde performed as herself there after!
One of my favourite songs of all time
One of my favorite female singers.
Chrissie wrote great songs with great hooks. A true talent.
I love Pretenders acoustic version of Creep. This is the acoustic version --->
The Pretenders - Creep (Live At London's Jakob Street Studios 1995)
Chrissie Hynde still sounds the same today. I listen to her newer songs and her voice reminds me of the first time that I heard “Brass In Pocket”.
The studio recording is a masterpiece.
This was the Live Aid Concert in Philadelphia it started in the late morning and finished just before midnight….Pretenders were one of many bands in Philly…at the same time there was another Live Aid concert in London…..
One of my favourite songs of the 80s. I was working in a record shop at the time.
Been loving Chrissie for so long
Starting to get psyched. Going to see The Pretenders in DC in 2 weeks
Like Robin Gibb, a voice that sounds like no one else. More PRETENDERS!!!!
Phil Collins played in both venues he first played in London then flew the now defunct Supersonic Concord to Philadelphia……it took 3 hours at about 1200 miles per hour…..
I watched that live as it was happening. I spent hours in front of the TV watching Live Aid.
Great reaction, my parent's used to listen to them all the time. My favourite of theirs was Hymn To Her. There's a great cover of it on YT by a bunch of Aussie's too, Katie Noonan, Kylie Auldist, Angie Hart, Deborah Conway and Ainslie Wills.
For all of you who love Chrissy like I do , look up Austin City Limits and watch her show. You will be blown away. Beth it would be great to talk about her as she is now.
I was looking for your reaction to Gabriel Herinque who participated in the AGT.
Me gustan tus reacciones a las diferentes tipos de propuestas musicales bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀
This was Live Aid. 1985.
Give “Mystery Achievement” by them a listen. My favorite by them.
She still sounds great too!
About 25 years ago Chrissy was playing that guitar about 20ft in front of me and I was awestruck and mesmerized.
Chrissie Hynde is the best-Thanks for your reactions and playing the song. Brian Birch
I heard a famous musician compare her (slower/wide) vibrato to Ronnie Spector, which, heck could've been an inspiration and therefore, a deliberate choice.
Yes, the Pretenders and I really enjoy this song. This isn't the best version live. Chrissy is much more powerful than in this video. It's not her the sound or mix aren't up to snuff here. IMHO. That doesn't make it bad and I enjoyed it and your great insights!
They’re in the RnR HOF for good reason. One of a kind vocals & songwriting.
Live Aid happened in 1985... No in-ears in those days
Was over 100 degrees during that Live Aid concert at Philadelphia…the band tried their best not to sweat during their short set….
The London location wasn’t too hot…..
Most bands in the 80s had little to no trouble projecting their sound to the back. We loved it loud
My ex saw her and her daughter in a NYC corner store - the kid was wearing a toddler’s ‘Pretenders’ tour jacket. When Chrissie turned around and their eyes met, my ex just said, “nice jacket”. Chrissie smirked her characteristic smile. A nice moment.
love her
In-ears wasn't invented in 1985. Only floor monitors.
You have to react to Tommy Johansson "You raise me up"One octave challange
Actually she looks like Jeff Beck.
Chrissie Hynde's vibrato is unique. She still sounds great (check out her performance from Glastonbury this year). I can think of another female vocalist with a rapid vibrato, and you have reacted to her before - Courtney Swain of Bent Knee. She really lets rip in their song Way Too Long.
Oldie but goodie classic. Not Stevie's Gypsy...but heck of a good song well done
there is a nice live in studio version of " thin line between love and hate" they did. and just bout anything from their last of the independents hard to find
Pat Benatar once said she wished she could sing like Chrissie Hyndes. Saw Pretenders twice in small venues - great shows.
You should be listening to the studio version.
Two members of The Pretenders overdosed.
so talented, highly intelligent along w/ a sexy voice. Chrissie is such a seductive, sultry beautiful lady as well. this is unmatched by any other female singer!
❤❤❤
Current music makes me fearful for my own children. Music now is so dim. So fake. So limp. No layers. Compare ANYTHING NOW 2023, to Chicago, 25 or 6 to 4. I'll wait.
James Honeyman scott died of cardiac arrest from cocaine over dose. the bassist Pete Farndon died from heroin
I have a question that I fear is silly: do singers actually need to hear themselves in order to sing on-key? Isn't it a matter of memorization of the song? I would understand harmonies could be tricky if you couldn't hear the other singers,: I'm just puzzled why you would need to hear your own voice to stay on pitch.
Great song, and thanks for the reaction, Beth!
At Live Aid. 1985.
Can you do one of Lauren Mayberry Chvrches, best Scottish female singer...
Do Party Fears Two by The Associates 👌
I got to record a respectable version of this song live with Andrea on vocals and Todd on drums about 10 years ago! ruclips.net/video/StZev9QezXw/видео.htmlsi=onsj33_MWLN6pbKg We had 3 potato camera angles, but it was done live (except for the bass which I had to overdub)
Sneakin Sally though the alley by Robert Palmer , plz
why would you do a live version?
A oh way to go OHIO❤
The first time you listen to a particular song you should always listen to the original studio version (with rare exceptions) before the live version.
Try this: ruclips.net/video/cMOKamtpUA8/видео.html
It is a shame that you based upon the live version to such a powerful song.
Too bad her wardrobe was taken from Jim Kerr. Too bad the reaction wasn't too earlier PRETENDERS with the better band live.
Give over beth she couldnt carry a tune in a bucket .
Meh, I see the undeniable talent but they're not my shiz
