Little late to the party but Ari mentions the poor side of the tire performance from the MT09. I LOVE the look of the XSR900 but would want it to use it at trackdays (I usually ride a GSXR600), does the XSR900 need tweaking to be a fun track day ride?
Trident vs MT-07, Street Triple vs MT-09.
Agree!
Street Triple is a premium bike with nice components, MT-09 a cheap budget bike with cheap components
@@WojciechKalka mt o9 with imu be like go and drop in a dump mate im a japanese and ive meant to give you robust engine and feautures bot fancy looks with shitty electronics
@@anneakhil5331 the mt09 is and always will be a budget bike for people who can't afford premium bikes ..and still want to have fun, I actually never liked the MT series they just feel cheap, just the MT07 tunes is a decent bike for the city .. I prefer fancy looks with great electronics but sadly the Aprillias are not available in Thailand
@@WojciechKalka oh fuckin hell in india it costs a bit more than street triple rs mate 😂😂😂 and many people did buy it
Spurg need to stop interrupting Zack & Ari mid sentence
Mt09 has 40hp more, I think Trident is direct competitor to mt07. Street triple is competitor to mt09 (close powervise, bot have adjustable suspension, standard QS...)
Absolutly. Only reason to compare the Trident to an MT09 is the fact that they're both triples. But also the pricepoint is quite different.
New MT-09 has standard up down QS, fully adjustable suspension, not to mention the SP version with Ohlins is coming to US too
@@Child3k The other reason to compare them is that they're both new! The XSR700 is likely the most direct competitor for the Trident in terms of performance, but they're going to have drastically different personalities.
@@Child3k What is a "price point "? Does it attach to the bike?
Spurg, let the other people finish. When it is your turn, make it shorter!
I put up with Spurg talking over Zack and Ari for about 10 minutes. never letting them finish a sentence.
This is most painful and I miss just Ari and Zack.
Spurg is turning into Lemmy
😂😂😂 I can't unsee this now
Spurg let em talk
does the bloke ever shut up?
Lol.
You guys need a talking stick; Spurg can only talk after either Zack or Ari hands him the talking stick
Erik Spencer yeah, he’s quite good at not letting the other two finish a sentence.
Spurg's way really stands out now that nobody else on the show does it that way.
Spurg still didn't realized 90% of people is listening the podcast because of Zack and Ari.
Personally, Zack and Ari are just enough for the podcast.
Spurg, stop embarrassing yourself...
How about letting Ari and Zack finish before jumping in dude? Painful.
Lol. Right! Prefer the laidback talking pace of Zack, he feels measured.
Spurge needs to stop interrupting zack and ari.
So glad Ari and Zack have a viable platform again!
Triumph has explicitly stated multiple times, that the bike is positioned in the lower middle class and the competitors of the Trident are the MT-07, the Z650, the CBR650R and the Monster 796.
I know. I really don't see how people are getting confused over this? it is very easy to follow. It is also very easy to see the differentiation when compared to the Street Triple.
Either less Spurg or make him raise his hand.
Triumph have clearly stated that the Trident is ment as a competitor to the MT-07, CB650R and to a lesser extent the Z650, unlike the MT-09 it's aimed at riders stepping up from smaller bikes or returning bikers.
Yup, that's fair. We wanted to talk about them together because they're both new and they're both triples.
I want to like this podcast so much, I love the guys in other mediums but a lot of this is tough to listen to. A couple of suggestions... Be less meta - don't talk about the podcast, do the podcast. Spurge - are you trying to be the host, or are you part of the team - don't mean that in a bad way, just decide. If you're the host, you can interrupt or talk over folks - if not, don't. Lighten up - there were several good segments where you guys seemed like you were being yourselves, but a lot of it felt like you were trying to put on a show. Your audience is mostly adult males, we can handle a curse word or two - don't bleep them out - it really takes away from the vibe. I'll keep listening if you guys keep trying.
Guys the thing with the cruisers is they never try a different bike, specially a sport-touring one. I came from the cruiser and when you try other many bikes, you realize are other better options to enjoy a long ride to wherever. So next time a cruiser-person ask "you hate cruisers?", the answer needs to be "do you try others bikes before ask that?"
Loosing patience with Spurg's "I'M IN CHARGE" thing while the brotherly & higher paid Ari & Zack pretend deference to the Usurper, (uh, Lemmy who?).
Oh brave new world, with such people in it...!
I hope Zack is doing a Daily Rider episode with that MT-09 in his garage :)
I have purchased serval accessories from Revzilla and they have ALWAYS delivered on time the high-quality product which they promised. Never have I been sold the wrong part. I urge anyone here to give this company a shot. They just don't disappoint. I love that they employ young people who are highly educated. And they all share the same love of motorcycles that most of us enthusiasts do. These folks are the REAL McCoy.
I miss the photos of the bikes you're talking about showing up in the video as you mention them. Not that i'm complaining. It's a great podcast👍🏼
Revzilla is imo the best moto content on the internet. thank you.
why did you guys not mention the z900... where does it fit between the trident and mt9 ? maybe a middle ground / compromise between the two?
56:55 even something as simple as taking an advanced rider course. i took one maybe three years after i started riding... the material covered in the class was simple crap i learned on my own just by riding everywhere i could possibly ride (including grocery shopping on a ninja 400 with saddlebags!). but although the basic lessons themselves weren't super helpful; going to the class, having discussions, then riding around a track with a bunch of others and practicing braking and everything, then going back and talking some more, is Excellent practice.
and one last little aside... you say 'arguably' way too much. both Spurge and Zack.
i love you guys!!!
I like these but Spurg sounds pretty naggy. Like when you’re wife is imitating your voice, making you sound like a dingus.
Great job..keeps me in touch with the industry since almost all the magazines are gone...that and many of the existing digital sites are inconsistent and generally bite.
Good job, guys, I was completely entertained! Looking forward to more of this!
Hopefully Trident will make a Tiger 660. Certainly the Tiger has gone way, way upmarket and helped open a hole for bikes like the Yamaha T7.
I love the idea of smaller, simpler bikes. And the market is due for another reasonably priced, mid-size ADV to join the Tenere 700.
I am a cruiser fan but might go ADV next bike and agree, tiger 660 would be nice
Here for zack and ari♥️
Who isn't? We basically hired them so I get to video chat with them daily.
Have all of you guys ridden the latest MT-09s (2019 - 2020)? The throttle is pretty much spot on, especially in Normal mode. All that talk about driveline lash makes me believe you're talking about the first generation MT-09 (2014)...
Yeah, they're likely talking about the first gen. The throttle response is pretty well sorted these days.
Spurg, sssssshhhhh.
Great chat, loving the vibes of friends talking bikes. I'll keep tuning in! 👍
P. S. Triumph Trident tail section looks brilliant! 😂
Very glad to see this. I got my first motorcycle, a 2017 Yamaha R3 in October 2019. I am extremely pleased with my choice, and will be keeping the R3 for a few years. Learning has been a breeze with the R3, but it has definitely let me have some fun. The bike being so light, everything from city traffic to nice twisty roads are enjoyable. Mainly, the MPG, price, and insurance is what puts the icing on the cake.
I cannot wait to move to the middleweight category in time. I am glad to see all this competition. Fantastic content as always. Cheers
Anyone else finding an ever growing resemblance between spurg and lemmy?
Zack! I loved your soccer analogy: even though you ride the same commute to work, you can still improve as a rider because your environment can change: weather, road conditions, traffic etc. Ive heard from experienced riders on RUclips that riding down the same road won't improve your riding skills and that you'll only improve in a parking lot spending time practicing. While I believe with this concept, your soccer analogy made me realize that there is plenty to learn on a daily commute as well. Cheers!
We need more of these longer podcasts on youtube.
Awesome guys! Would be awesome to have an episode about the modern classics not only triumph's (if you don't have it, of course)
I wish they would talk about riding motorcycles rather than motorcycles. I know these people have a lot of information about riding in many different conditions/places so it would be much more valuable to me to learn more about their experiences rather than listening to what's going on in the industry and how many horsepower triumph has vs yamaha and how much they weigh and all that.
I raced professionally in the 1960’s-70’s motocross and flat track. We raced the bike the way it arrived from the factory. Did not change suspension as tech was not there
Why are they comparing the Trident to the MT09? Completely different bikes and markets. It's a MT07 competitor
Great show today fellas! Appreciated the insight and the back and forth about where the Trident would fit when compared to the MT-07 and Z650. Super helpful comments. Cheers!
Another awesome show! With all the negativity and stress out there, this is a great way to think about and listen to things I find interesting. Gonna buy a middleweight this Spring.
MT07 is still my favorite bike.
I had the 09 basic Street Triple and I felt more solid riding that bike then any other bike I have ever owned. I'm 66 and have been riding every kind of bike for over 44 years. I might be interested in the new Trident. I have 5 bikes and I do an oil change on mine once every year. One of my bikes is a 2012 basic 865 Bonnie. Love it and can't bring myself to turn loose of it. I've been there with speed and excitement. Done with that. I just enjoy riding a good handling bike that makes me feel like a better rider then I am.
Looking forward to a revamped tracer 900 GT. That’s what’s up.
Also love this podcast format. Makes me want to support revzilla even more. These guys are great together.
And the xsr?
I think Ari's (and Zack's) point about driveline lash is one of the more important points of the discussion. Sure, aesthetics matter in terms of how you feel about your bike in general, but excessive driveline lash impacts your riding every moment you're on the bike and moving. I've been contemplating either the 2021 Z900, and with the recent announcement, now the MT-09. I'll have to wait for the tests and comparisons to be published on the MT-09. If it still has the lash and resultant impaired throttle response, that will be enough to push me to the Z900.
Does the MT-09 give us a peek at a new XSR900?
Great job boys! Thanks for the enjoyable conversation to listen in on.
Ari, how about a deep dive into driveline lash? would make an informative video.
Good suggestion. It's actually on my list of TSM topics. What sorta info are you looking for?
@@AriH211You mentioned that Yamaha's jerky throttle is partly due to the play at the primary, clutch basket, etc. Going through all of the moving parts and how they work together can help with understanding the overall concept.
I'm also interested in knowing what Triumph has done differently with their setup to make their bikes so smooth. I've ridden both bikes (Triple RS and my own '18 MT), night and day difference in throttle feel/response.
I flashed my ECU, and the throttle feel is still nowhere near where I want it to be; I have several bikes and can quickly jump from one to the other with no issues; the MT09 is the only bike that I need to ride for an hour or so before I can dial it in.
I hope the request makes sense. Thank you
@@AriH211 That would be great, I'm curious who has the tightest tolerances? I assume the more expensive a bike the less driveline lash it has?
I’m a big fan of the Zila crew. I enjoyed listening to you fellas this morning instead of the constant negative news. I am looking forward to the new Trident. I am looking forward to ride reviews on the bike. I currently own a T1 20 and a new 900 GT pro. I also heard that Yamaha is updating the MT07. Any word on that?
I test rode the 2020 Tracer 900 GT and MT09 but preferred the older FJ09 so I bought a 2015 ... 7200 kilometres in 53 days and it’s an awesome bike. Not a big fan on the new 2021 MT09 styling and I am biased against Triumph for various reasons. It’s not like Yammie doesn’t have their own foibles but it’s a low cost and fast and fun ride.
A couple of tips to getting the MT09 handling right. Lower the bike on the forks about 10-15mm. The standard setup has a rake of 25 degrees which makes the bike try to stand up through corners. By comparison the KTM 790 and Street Triple are more like 24 and 24.3 degrees. This makes the bike effortless at full lean. Then add a stabiliser for fast corners.
The obvious tip is suspension. I run Ohlins front and rear. Keeping the bike stable (not pitching or bouncing) is what you are trying to achieve. If you cant afford the high spec gear, just start with a firm rear spring to match your weight.
For brakes, change to cheap Chinese rotors and HH pads. Start with the rear rotor for $50 off eBay and see just how much difference it makes.
My 2018 Triumph Bonneville T120 has 10K mile oil changes, and by 20K miles in 5 months of ownership I blew the transmission. I was "recommended" by Triumph to go to 5K mile oil changes. I'm now coming up to 78K miles on my T120. The valves needed adjustment at 20K miles ( 20K intervals) and it's been in spec since. I would recommend going to 5K mile oil changes anyway with the Trident...
The best trio of Petro-heads (gear-heads) in the other side of the pond. Enjoyed listening to you guys, even on a drab topic like new triples. Keep it up!
Right on! I anxiously await every episode!
Always a fun time watching you guys go at it! Spurg is Father Motorcycle regulating lol
Keep on doing the good job, loving your episodes from Nairobi, Kenya!
2021 MT09 SP or 2020 Street Triple Rs?
These are the two bikes I’m considering for my next bike (currently own a z650)
Entertaining podcast guys! I enjoyed it. Spurg brought up a good point when he called Zack a well rounded motorcyclist.... What makes a well rounded motorcyclist would make a great "whole other podcast in itself" :-)
Love Ari's extent of knowledge on the driveline fab/design process, talking about tooling and such. He almost sounds like a mechanical engineer! (maybe he was?)
I was seriously looking at purchasing the Triumph Street Twin, until I saw the new 2021 Triumph Trident. I thinks it’s a beautiful retro looking bike with lots of bells and whistles at a great price. I just put down a deposit and can’t wait for it to come into Canada hopefully early 2021 just so I can stare at it in my garage over the winter. I be very happy😊
Waiting for the in-kind update to the xsr 900, since it already handles really well.
Also I think that you really can make a podcast itself about every type of motorcycle and which one is the best for the money, for the power, for the "soul' of the engine or the bike itself and most of all for the fun.
Triumph did not have anything in this category as in the UK when we pass and get the full motorcycle license, we go for a 650cc engine bike as the insurance will be cheaper and Triumph felt they were missing out in this lucrative market.
The Trident is the bike I should get but the MT09 SP is the one I want. Glad to see so many new bikes being released and updated. CB1000R black edition looks amazing as well.
Awesome video guys I love highside lowside! Also I bought a 2019 street twin as my first bike and I’d have to to say I would never consider the trident in the same class as the modern classics. It’s definitely more of a street triples little brother. Still excited to see one when it comes out tho. Can’t wait for the next episode!
Lets hear about the Cruisers. Been thinking about one for me and the Mrs.
The new MT-09 has me completely rethinking my next MC purchase.
Also if your in the US, we are getting the MT 09 SP for the first time. All the goodies for a few thousand price hike.
SP version adds cruise control.
There's practically nothing about it that is a carry over from 2020. So much has changed. And I think for the better.
Great show guys! Have Ari on more! You completely blew the comparison though. The Trident is not meant to compete with the MT09, that would be the domain of the Street Triple R/Rs . The Trident is just an MT07 for the bougie crowd. Having ridden the MT07 my biggest praise and complaint is both the engine. The torque is great but she runs out of steam quick. The trident on the other hand has a bit more rev range, assumed higher ride quality and not to mention improved aesthetics for about the same dollars,. My money is on the Trident.
Hi guys, really enjoyed this episode.
My question is, have you ever bought a bike because it's different?
I'm riding a BMW F900R, which I adore, but part of its appeal is I virtually never see another one coming down the road.
Can you relate to this?
Love the show.
Spurgeon, zack...can we get a buyer's guide comparison of your recommended mid-control cruisers?
This video was super informative and more perfectly this was exactly what i needed to make up my mind which bike to buy. Thanks :)
Love you guys and your chat could listen forever
SP version of MT-09 is coming stateside 2021. Would like to hear a discussion, all 3 guys, on differences and is it worth $1600 more bux?
The suspension upgrades alone are worth that price difference. The added cruise control is a cherry on top. I have a 2017 FZ09 that I invested in aftermarket suspension and the improved cornering is incredible.
@@touristtrapezoid Appreciate it! Always good to get info from a hands-on source.
Great banter, gents. Full disclaimer, I am a huge Triumph fan-boy (I have a Street Triple RS and a Speed Twin), but Yamaha will win the outright unit count contest because of the broader dealer network. Here in Georgia, we only have three Triumph dealers (despite Triumph N.A. being headquartered in Atlanta), so accessibility for purchase and follow-up servicing can be a challenge; especially for a beginning rider looking to get into the Triumph brand.
I think the Trident will cut the sales more for the MT-07 than the MT-09. At least in Europe
Zack and Ari are great, let em' speak.
Here in France I really fancied the Street triple A2 after passing my test late in life, but the insurance was pretty high. (2000 euros for an 8000 euro bike!) . So hopefully the Trident is in a lower insurance class and the Street Triple range can remain aspirational rather than neutered. PS I agree with some of the other posters, too much pre-amble, let your guest talk even if your mics are big and you are hyped up :) Ari seemed well equipped to explain the history of the models but you were too keen to jump in with your wikipedia found factoids.
I think the Trident is more in line with the MT-07. Weight, cost, horsepower, torque, and size. I also don't care for the swingarm mounted stuff. I have a 17 FZ-07 and every time I think about getting something else I just can't find anything I would rather have.
Thanks for the podcast guys. Been looking for something like this. All purpose podcast for driving, going to sleep, working out, #2, etc. Try face paint next time. Like Mudvayne or Kiss or something. It'll be fun and maybe aid yall too. Haters gonna hate.
Some of us are getting a little older - late sixties. Manufacturers are probably not aiming at us. I have a 2018 Triumph Speedmaster that I love. But I can see it is getting a little heavy for me and I will need to move to something lighter at some point. I like getting my feet on ground when I stop. Most of the lighter bikes seem to have seat heights above 31 inches. Thoughts?
Do you think Yamaha will give the XSR an update in 2021 like the MT09 is getting?
Love the review. Love the podcast. Very natural these three guys
First, the BSA Rocket and the original Trident were not the same. The BSA's cylinders were canted forward; the Triumph's were vertical. Their frames and exhausts were also different. Second, this is the THIRD Trident. The second Trident was one of the first models released by the new Hinckley Triumph company in the early 90's.
How about Trident vs cb650r vs z650?
I wonder why the vs was only considered yamaha? Is it purely cost based instead of power based? In any case the cost based comparison was always going to favor the yamaha. If it's more about the feel, finish, options and power; then it'd be a bit more in-depth, I understand that might be tough to do.
Cheers
that service interval is insane
Enjoy the show! ... here is a topic for a future conversation/show. Bikes you were sad to see discontinued and why.... if they were to bring it back what is needed to be successful.
I wish you would have talked about reliability. The Trident is a new, first release model. Should we be cautious about reliability? Same goes for the MT-09 I guess.
thank goodness for Ari:)
2021 MT09SP comparisons/competitors? Do ittttttt!
@Rod Rebman dunno about the 790, maybe the 890 Duke R would be a better shootout with the mt09SP
Hello to you all, first my congratulations on your podcast. It's good the way you share your point of view and opinions about this world that we love. Following the topic, the Triumph is a very beatiful bike and will sell very well, but the correct oponent is the new MT07, not the MT09 but, between the two and having the money, I'd go to the MT09.
Motorcycles of old were primarily about the motor. The motor is still important but with electronics it makes you a better rider. Ride by wire with better fuel control with anti wheelie, TC which can get on throttle faster and harder
I know, I am weird, but the first thing that draw my attention was the fact that as opposed to some videos from the past you did in similar format (each person separately in their homes/garages) this time Spurg had the worst video quality and Zack's and Ari's was much improved :) Other than that, great chatting as always and thanks for the content!
How yall bout to talk about British motorcycles especially the old ones without Joe!!
I do more than 10K miles a year, so yup, service intervals are something I look at, but oil changes aren't that onerous a cost.
Do you change the oil yourself or take it to the shop?
I am 63 years old and have 8 bikes which include 2010 675R, 2003 Triumph 955 Speed Triple 2 air-cooled Ducati 1000's of all the new bikes I have been looking at the Trident is my focus, I have converted so many to the world of smooth torque glorious Arrow pipe screaming triples and very much look forward to a new small Triumph, I have not ridden a Yamaha since racing an XS1100 and really have enjoyed the Triumphs so much that I don't have to look over the garden fence.
Spurgeon "I would never say I hate cruisers."
Also Spurgeon in the episode, "Hate em."
Why did Ari have to leave for viewers questions? Keep that guy on there!
You can see it in Zacks fast, Spug talks too much
Give me an XSR over both, thanks
I feel like the RS 660 also needs to be in this conversation.
triple engines for fucks sake
@@anneakhil5331 I get that bruh. But the RS660 is way too similar to the trident, in displacement, positioning, ergos. I just feel like it needs to be in the context. Also chill out for FUCKS SAKE
@@219arun The price difference is the reason why they didn't include it in the conversation
@@regisbagas784 I agree there's a huge price gap but the bike still has relevance being a new platform in the middle weight category albeit on the premium end of the spectrum. but it definitely can be part of this conversation is all I'm saying
Do you guys think Harley is on the right track globally with axing the Bronx model, which would be in my mind cool to see against the Indian FT models. Also whats the future of the Sportster in the future of emissions
Triumph Trident 660cc engine sounds like the Australia version of LAMS engine found in the Street Triple.
