I have a similar problem. I can't draw medieval weapons, but I can draw a mean M-16. So, all of my Knights of the Round Table have automatic weaponry. I feel your pain, Jazza. I feel your pain.
I've been coming back to this tutorial for years just to remember how to start coloring correctl. I don't use Photoshop often but when I do it for something very specific. Thank you Jazza.
I love the way you explain what you're doing and how to do it. And how enthusiastic you are Jazza! Suscribed a few months ago and even bought your signature brushes, now I can't stop using them and practicing as often as possible! Keep up the good work it's always a pleasure to watch your videos and your tutorials!
This is exactly the video I needed. I've been trying to teach myself digital artwork and have not found a ton of helpful tutorials on how to go from traditional to digital. And it also helped demystify why so many artists started drawing in red and blue pencil. Thanks Jazza!
Love your vids SOOOOOO much!!! My son and I watch them to get great tips and to hone our craft. (He's a 10-year-old aspiring manga artist.) In 10 minutes, we learn so much REAL, VALUABLE, immediately USABLE information, all given without a bunch of BS to wade through and nothing dry or boring as well. Really engaging, helpful, and so motivating and inspiring because you make us feel like we can all do it, too! Thanks, Jazza!
Quick addition at 9:30 which Jazza forgot to mention. When you're selecting the lineart to create a selection, make sure you have contiguous ON (check box at the top). That will isolate the line work in segments and not select all the white at once.
Holy crap, this was pretty much my biggest hangup with switching over to doing digital art, and you managed to clear it up within just a few minutes. Cheers!
Can I cry? Can I marry you?? And crying at same time?? I SWEAR REALLY I COULDN'T FIND ANYONE HERE ON YT THAT ARE ABLE TO EXPLAIN SO EASIER PS THAN YOU!! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, YOU SAVED MY LIFE, NOW I CAN FINALLY DRAWINGS LIKE I WANT!!
Jesus Christ... I spent ONE YEAR trying to find a way to do what you just have done in this video. I found tutorials, I made experiments, and I never succedeed. After all this time, you just solved my problem. THANK YOU JAZZA, YOU'RE SO FUCKING AWESOME!
Great tutorial. I used to do a lot of work in Photoshop but didn't have a lot of the things that make life easier (scanner, decent pen tablet, etc). Now I do and this has really helped get me back into the habit of putting work into digital form.
An alternative way for the latter part: Once you have removed the blue lines, instead of doing the whole Multiply thing, you can also save your image as a psd or png file, open it with GIMP (shut up, bear with me), go to "Color" then "Color to alpha/transparency" and then have GIMP remove all the pure white tones in the drawing, so you end up with only your drawn lines with no pixelated edges because it smootly calculates how much white is in each pixel and then only removes that amount, so the edges of your black lines will softly fade into transparency if you zoom in all the way. It's a really great technique for getting rid of that pesky white color that keeps you from having your lineart isolated. So far, I haven't been able to find this function in Photoshop. Double-clicking a layer and then moving the slider at the bottom of the first layer style tab is alright for very rough white-removal, but it does leave you with jagged corners and less than optimal results overall.
Chris so I've done this in GIMP before on a sketch I scanned... I assumed Photoshop had the same functionality and was wondering why he wasn't doing it... I'm quite surprised. been away from art for 2 years so trying Krita this time. wonder if it has something similar.
@@figmak theres actually an easier way still. select and cut your drawing. press q to enter quick mask mode. paste your image back in. press q again to exit quick mask mode. invert selection and fill selection with black (or whatever). now all the black is back in place and all the white is transparent. in all hot keys the sequence is ⌘+a, ⌘+x, q, shift+⌘+v, q, shift+⌘+i, option+delete.i use it so much i've programmed it as a hot key function.
This video was not only super informative and barrier breaking for a newbie to making drawings digital, but Jazza, you made the whole process enjoyable and inspiring!
I’ve been watching jazzas channel everyday for the past 3 weeks and still haven’t made a dent in his channels content 😂😂 I’m excited but also overwhelmed
After a couple of years without drawing anything you keep me excited about it! Ive been diving into my photography career but illustration is and always will be my passion, despite my lack of skill haha Thank you!
I know you're way too polite and professional to ever do it, but I would love to see you have a section on either this or the Daily Jazza channel a monthly or possibly weekly video called, "But, JAZZzzzzaaaAAA...." Were you address the whiny and pedantic in a fun but verbally facial slapping, occasionally comedic ranty way! :)
OMG you crack me up! i watched your whole tutorial no skipping, theres not many tutorials ive been able to watch all the way through and i learned something! thanks! Ive been trying to get into digital artwork but havent really found a good place to start ill definitely give this a shot!
I've watched this video before, but didn't pay attention and really should have. I've been taking an image and deconstructing it by making 100 white to black pixels then selecting each one and putting each at a different layer before turning them all to black and changing the transparency of each layer to what it was. Turns out I could've just selected multiply if I was patient. This is gonna save me hours. Thank you Jazza!
I love how excited you get !! Also I love that you play around sometimes and arn't too serious, makes it feel like your having fun and interacting with you while at the same time, learning how to produce amazing art !! thank you for existing and teaching youtube how to art Hehe xx!!xx
Great and helpful tutorial as always, Jazza. I agree about the sketchy-looky aesthetic. It's kind of cool. Sometimes when I refine sketches into more complete drawings I kind of like them less.
OBVIOUSLY the army guy used to be an avid anthropologist and has a preference for medieval weapons. they are probably custom made tempered steel. also, given this info it'd be safe to say that he is also an interrogator who uses medieval style torture devices to get information from uncooperative enemies.
I never realized that multiply made the white of a layer invisible, and that using the outside of the silhouette as a mask is just brilliant. I normally made a silhouette behind the line work then Alt linked the color and shading layers to it, but this seems to give you so much more control and an easier lay out.
Jazza, thank you so much! I am self taught and was never shown how to do these things. I finally understand how to Better both my traditional and digital art. Thank you! Thank you!
Great explanation for scanning in sketches and prepping them. However, I would HIGHLY suggest to NOT use the Multiply layer method as demonstrated here. You will run into problems further into painting. After you had the clean line art, you should've sketch lifted the drawing using the channel path selector (next to the layers tab bottom right). This way ONLY the lines are left, and you can literally paint UNDER the lines transparently with no multiply needed. Layer issues will be resolved and don't have to worry about colors getting affected. Many professional artists recommend this. I'd recommend to redo this part on sketch lifting since I believe this will hurt some artists in the future. KNKL's youtube channel has covered this multiple times.
Wow, I am an avid 'Levels' adjuster, but I wasn't as aware of Channel Mixer as I should've been! OMG you are a godsend I have been searching for a video like this for 2 weeks. You were funny, informative and entertaining. Towards the end you sped up just a bit but I think I got all my note now, thanks again.
Omg - you have made learning Photoshop fun. I am a newbie in digital art (having 30 years of art experience) and you make me laugh when I know there is so much to learn! Thanks for the entertainment and clear lesson..now back to practicing.
i remember watching this when it first came out, and i always come back for help on this. tysm jazza! - tired art student with rapidly approaching deadline
I'm glad you showed another way to do this! There's another why where you make the image transparent except the black lines. Take a bit compared to just hitting myltiply
the part where you cry about the daggers made me so happy :D this is one of the things where people looking at your art are like "wow. that is so amazing! he can draw soo many soo cool weapons! and i can only draw axes.. meh.." but actually you can also just draw those daggers.! thanks for sharing you insecurities with us. made me feel better about myself!
Jazza!! Thank you so much!!! I seriously almost lost my passion for art because all the art i was seeing was so perfect and smooth on a computer, and the best i could do was a rough sketch with a mouse in the Paint program... But after seeing this video it has renewed my passion and for that i thank you so so so much!! 😁😁
Depending on the pens/ink you use for the line work you usually end up thinning the inked lines when erasing the pencil ones - which means you have to retrace the drawing at least partially. I can only speak for my own experience though, and I use an H2 pencil for sketching and sakura micron pens for inking. Using a blue/red pencil saves you time, when your intention is already to scan the artwork for digital painting, with the added bonus of allowing for mistakes and corrections without much hassle.
+Tubs&Chubs I know but he could've done the same thing with pencil and once he scanned it he wouldn't have had to do the step of taking the blue away in the first place so I was confused about why he was just adding an extra step to what needed to be done anyway?
It seems to be the quicker route, just to sketch, do your linework, scan, then get rid of the lines while also turning your linework digital at the same time, compared to sketching, doing linework, erasing lines, redoing the linework again, scan, turn linework into digital drawing. That's my take on it at least, this whole time I've just been sketching on paper, scanning, then drawing over digitally. This would be much faster.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. This is so helpful to me, I have so much trouble doing line work digitally, but I love painting digitally so this is perfect for me. Before I just tried to make outlines by selecting color range then deleting the white but it left a funny edge. You da best Jazza
Just wanted to add to any of your videos a huge THANK YOU for sharing all your knowledge with all of us!!! Great and clear tutorials, links, tips and other stuff that are real eyeopeners and helped me understand and better use PS and other software. So, again, THAAAANKKS! You're awesome :)
Thank you so much Jazza!! You really saved my life here with the leveling thing. Now I can scan in my traditional inked comics and have solid, clean, and clear linework to color underneath or edit! Thank you!!!
Jazza rules! I wanted to digitally color underneath the lines of my physical drawing and this method is the identifiable winner. Works well, and Josiah is an entertaining and funny guy. - Jacob
you can also go to threshold in adjustments. it make everything either a black or white pixel, but it's better used with scans bigger than 300 or it won't look as nice.
For me its about having a certain mindset when drawing, I tend to be afraid of making mistakes when i hold a normal pencil which can prevent me from starting to even sketch sometimes, so i tried to sketch with a blue/red pencil instead and told myself this is my sketch pencil and colour, this is a pencil where mistakes won't matter as i will draw on top of it with my normal pencil. This simple and somewhat strange sounding trick helps surprisingly well as your mind sorta calms down when it learns that once you hold your sketch colour pencil no mistakes matters and things just flow easier, its trick i recommend for all artists who find they are afraid of making mistakes even in sketches.
Thank you so much! I keep wanting to get into digital art, but I'm just used to drawing on paper and didn't know an easy way to color in my sketch on the computer.
This will be so helpful scanning doodles. I've spent so much time experimenting and this is simple and direct. I have used levels a lot, but that channel mixer was always intimidating. Now it makes a lot more sense. Thanks! Oh and another great outro! :D
I've learnt more from you in 15 minutes for free than I have getting 12 grand in debt for two years of uni 😩 I love these kind of tutorials please please please keep them coming!! 💚
I have some of those red & blue pencils, from Charles Leonard, not Lyra. (Lyra makes bomb colored pencils.) They are good and give a good line, but aren't erasable nor forgiving. Dixon Ticonderoga makes erasable checking pencils in red, blue, and purple. They smear more, but if you MUST erase, you'll get better use out of the erasable kind. No double sided ones in that brand, though.
Dropping in to say I just recently discovered your channel and you're entertaining to watch! I feel inspired to draw when watching as well as learning a few things along the way. Oh, and clearly the army guy is badass enough he doesn't need modern day combat knives to get the job done, and he just blew up a medieval sword shop at the mall, grabbing the first weapons he could find leaping from the explosion.
This was a really useful tutorial Jazza! I've been practicing on photoshop and like colouring on it, but prefer doing construction and linework traditionally. This will help me find a nice balance in my work, thank you! :)
I have a similar problem.
I can't draw medieval weapons, but I can draw a mean M-16. So, all of my Knights of the Round Table have automatic weaponry.
I feel your pain, Jazza. I feel your pain.
i think it'd be a cool concept for knights to have modern weaponary and tech. You accidentally inspired me... thank you.
haha i did this also! But I can also draw medieval weapons :D

that sounds really cool haha

Hey,thank you so much for the tutorial! it helped me a lot!
Just for reference, I have seen WWII bayonettes that look real similar to that, js. Also look up K-Bar, a very simple and modern looking knife :D
Whenever I see a lot of random replies that have nothing to do with the main comment I know Jazza has replied... ;)
Jazza i didnt even realize your drawing a medieval dagger i was busy focusing on your tutorial. Its mind blowing
Can you share the paper, markers, and scanner you use? Also what hair product? LOL
seconded.
Pretty sure his hair product is actually in one of his older vlogs, over a month old i think
his hair product is unicorn's tears. I asked him once
Thanks :)
Markers would be Copic. Not sure about the paper.

man it just makes me feel awesome when his character is in a uniform in the end animation and it matches the video its so awesome

this helps so much as i have no graphics tablet
Me too... I feel your pain...
Me to this helps so much
it's hard to paint without a tablet, but you can still do the levels thing with just photoshop. If you don't have that then get GIMP, it's free.

Great and helpful tutorial as always, Jazza. I agree about the sketchy-looky aesthetic. It's kind of cool. Sometimes when I refine sketches into more complete drawings I kind of like them less.
As I finally give up on people appreciating traditional art, this is a golden tutorial. Thanks!
OBVIOUSLY the army guy used to be an avid anthropologist and has a preference for medieval weapons. they are probably custom made tempered steel. also, given this info it'd be safe to say that he is also an interrogator who uses medieval style torture devices to get information from uncooperative enemies.
I just went through and wrote down all of the directions so I can have this with me at all times. THIS CHANGED MY LIFE
Jazza, I'd love to see you draw your character in the Don't Starve style, especially if you like the whole sketchy aesthetic!
I never realized that multiply made the white of a layer invisible, and that using the outside of the silhouette as a mask is just brilliant. I normally made a silhouette behind the line work then Alt linked the color and shading layers to it, but this seems to give you so much more control and an easier lay out.
This was such a useful tutorial, Thanks Jazza. I’m going to order some red and blue pencils now :P
KNKL's youtube channel has covered this multiple times.
this sounds interesting, any video you recomend with this alternative please?
Wow, I am an avid 'Levels' adjuster, but I wasn't as aware of Channel Mixer as I should've been! I love watching your videos and other artists' videos here on RUclips, I feel like I've gleaned a lot of tips and tricks that make the my learning process of digital drawing and painting a lot smoother! Thank you!
Am I the only one who thinks pictures look better when there sketched and not refined?
yeah, they have more strenght, eventhough they are harder to read and aren't as technically impressive.
Well I'm using both styles depending on what suits it better (really prefere the sketchy style for scary drawings)
Nick Ted I always leave the sketches under my finished drawings XD
I like sketches
Nick Ted I don't do that in digital art but u do in traditional
OMG you are a godsend I have been searching for a video like this for 2 weeks. You were funny, informative and entertaining. Towards the end you sped up just a bit but I think I got all my note now, thanks again.
I was kind of expecting the animated Jazza in the end to pull out medieval dagger 😅
I struggle a lot with digital art and this hack has really helped me make some great stuff!
This video just made my day! So helpful and funny!
I just can't believe the quality of your videos they're so good and always teach me something thanks for all the hard work you put into this channel
Just pointing it out, the pencil was still a bit crooked.
maya thanks for making me annoyed! I’ll never unsee that 😭
Omg - you have made learning Photoshop fun. I am a newbie in digital art (having 30 years of art experience) and you make me laugh when I know there is so much to learn! Thanks for the entertainment and clear lesson..now back to practicing.
Why Medievals daggers though??
aesthetic
Maybe he forgot his combat knives, and found medieval daggers while scavenging an abandoned museum or something
He answers this in the video... 13:02
The soldier character found the medieval daggers in the temple. Behind him. Just before it blew up in a huge fireball. Duh!
Hypothesis 1: a complex scenario who will be explained in a prequel.
Hypothesis 2: Rule of cool, bitches :p

I love Jazza's videos and listening and watching them as I work on my drawings. It helps get me motivated and the creative juices flowing.
Can this be used on other art programs such as Paint Tool Sai and Fire Alpaca? This is amazing thank you so much Jazza :D
Yes, though you might have to get creative with some of the features that aren't in those programs.
Came here to find how to transfer my drawings into my computer, got a full tutorial how to make insane designs! Thank you a lot! Love the video.
I did not think about the knives until he pointed it out.
I absolutely love you for this. I always hated scanning in pictures and having to clean everything up. This will save me so much time, thank you!
That explosion looks like a close-up of an all cheese pizza...what have i done!?
the part where you cry about the daggers made me so happy :D this is one of the things where people looking at your art are like "wow. that is so amazing! he can draw soo many soo cool weapons! and i can only draw axes.. meh.." but actually you can also just draw those daggers.! thanks for sharing you insecurities with us. made me feel better about myself!
take a shot every time he says “layah“
Jazza!! Thank you so much!!! I seriously almost lost my passion for art because all the art i was seeing was so perfect and smooth on a computer, and the best i could do was a rough sketch with a mouse in the Paint program... But after seeing this video it has renewed my passion and for that i thank you so so so much!! 😁😁
Jazza: duplicates layer
Also Jazza: doesn’t matter what it’s named who cares
The duplicated layer: I took that personally
You have no idea how helpful this is! Ive been looking for a way to get rid of my construction lines in photoshop forever! Thanks Jazza!
So couldn't you have just done the sketch in pencil and do your line work and then erase the pencil lines...?
Depending on the pens/ink you use for the line work you usually end up thinning the inked lines when erasing the pencil ones - which means you have to retrace the drawing at least partially. I can only speak for my own experience though, and I use an H2 pencil for sketching and sakura micron pens for inking. Using a blue/red pencil saves you time, when your intention is already to scan the artwork for digital painting, with the added bonus of allowing for mistakes and corrections without much hassle.
I agree
the whole thing about this video is making your sketch digital.
You have officially made my day! I have been looking for a video to explain this for so long!!! ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY JAZZA!
its over 9000
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
This is so helpful to me, I have so much trouble doing line work digitally, but I love painting digitally so this is perfect for me. Before I just tried to make outlines by selecting color range then deleting the white but it left a funny edge.
You da best Jazza
Looks like a closeup of a pizza in the background xD
You are a magical artist, and very few can match your talent.
Most of you aren't even done with the video. But anyway 6th.
Well, really, the video's 14 minutes long and it's only been out for 7 minutes. So nobody could have watched it all yet!

You're enthusiasm in this video is hilarious, I love it! Also this video was very helpful so thanks!

you can also go to threshold in adjustments. it make everything either a black or white pixel, but it's better used with scans bigger than 300 or it won't look as nice.
This simple and somewhat strange sounding trick helps surprisingly well as your mind sorta calms down when it learns that once you hold your sketch colour pencil no mistakes matters and things just flow easier, its trick i recommend for all artists who find they are afraid of making mistakes even in sketches.
very helpful. I like these tutorials.
Your tutorials are easy to watch. Some people make tutorials and they're really boring to listen to.
Dude, you are so goddamn helpful. I 've seen many vector tutorials and never gotten the solution i wanted. Thank you so much you are awesome
i will always support you because you did this tutorial without using shortcut keys. excellent work 🙏🏼👌🏻🙌🏻
Like always, whatever video Jazza do is just.... magic!
A life saver for making well made and quick commissions
This is amazing. I always enjoy your work. Please keep it coming. your videos is what's helping me through art school right now.
I like to just run my work through the stamp or torn edges filter. It cleans up my lines and adds a stylized feel.
Man, i just love your videos and excitement when making them
Great technique! It's so much more effective than using the magic wand and coloring selection by selection. You've just earned a new subscriber! :D
This was a really useful tutorial Jazza! I've been practicing on photoshop and like colouring on it, but prefer doing construction and linework traditionally. This will help me find a nice balance in my work, thank you! :)
I really enjoy this type of video that show simple and effective tips and tricks in Photoshop. Also your drawing is great!!!
I love when animated Jazza changes depending on the content of the video
