Discovered Asterix in the secondary school Library when I was about 12 (in 1984 ; that and Tin Tin).
God I was so excited to get my most recent 'borrow' home to read it. The discovery was a bit of a fluke; I knew nothing about the books, but was immediately hooked on the first reading. I forgot just how hilarious Asterix the Gaul was, and pleasantly surprised to see that the comedy translates very well in cartoon.

Funny how they look so off model here, but this is actually what they look like in the very first comic book entry, with the same title.
Uderzo drew them here for the first time and his artstyle evolved as the books were following.
Compare this for ex. with the 85's movie Asterix against Caesar. That movie might be way more high budget but it depicts Asterix and Obelix more as they currently look. The difference is night and day :)

    • @winnetouch
      @winnetouch Год назад

@@MissFlow I don't care if you have the book from your father's 3rd cousin 4th removed. I am looking at the book and I checked the scans from the first pressing. The characters are not that sloppily drawn in any of the panels. The basic character design of any of the main Asterix characters hasn't really changed that much for dacades anyway. But this film is just atrociously drawn and animated. And yes, Uderzo did not like this movie exactly because the design and animation looks cheap. That's the exact reason why he insisted to be more involved in the film Asterix and Cleopatra. While even that film is not the best example of quality design and animation it is a stark improvement over this one.

@@lisagerman2111 The authors had lots of fun when translating, making up characters' names in a very 'English' way:
Asterix, who is about as big as an asterisk
Obelix, who is about the same size and shape as an obelisk
      Gaulish maiden named Panacea
      Gaulish bard named Cacofonix
      Druids named Getafix and Valueaddedtax
      Romans:
General Cantankerus, Decurion Totalabscess, Julius Monotonus...
And lots of others - the books are very witty.

Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge didn't start translating the books proper until 1969, and this was 1967. At least they got some of the names right- an earlier dodgy-er English adaptation translated Asterix and Obelix to "Little Fred and Big Ed" (!)

I had no idea this was a series in the 60s! There is a game based on this. I seen it on Nintendo Switch eShop. It looked pretty good and I loved the animation they used in the game. When I went to search for some gameplay footage this popped up. 😂😂 Honestly I just thought the game was a standalone. Just some original idea of an indie developer.

It's one of the biggest, if not the biggest reference of French/Belgian comics along with Tintin and some others. You can't find a French person that doesn't know Asterix.

In real life these guys were the bane of the Romans. They would fight naked, their whole bodies painted blue and win against armored Romans who were also in greater numbers...

Naked? Painted in blue? Are you sure you're not confusing the Gauls with Picts?
Speaking of which, later (although outside of the two original author's work), there's an issue where Asterix met these people up there in ancient UK.

On a French exchange in the '80s, my room had the complete set of books - in French. By the time I read them all, I'd do a double-take wondering if I'd just read some English. Still can't see Asterix throwing a punch without thinking "PAF!"
