Oh that is a bummer. I swapped my trailer lights out for LED's which pull a lot less amps and I also make sure to disconnect my trailer lighting when launching the boat so I dont get any shorting from being in the water so far my new one has held up. Seems like the trailer circuit in the TIPM is the weak link. Good luck.
It doesn't need to be programed but it is important to follow the instructions. You have to turn the key on and let the TIPM read the truck. Then you turn it off and then start it. As I said, I had to go through the clear codes process to get everything to work even though there were no codes indicated.
No I didn't, but its possible I suppose. That's what the the re-manufacturer does. It would be difficult without the schematic and access to a replacement chip.
@@TreeTopFlier most times it's a problem with one of the 3 relays on the underside of the board that's the culprit. People replace all 3 since they are identical. Never know though because the problem could be corrosion or a bad trace section on the board. I played it safe and bought a reconditioned 2 days ago, less then 200.00. 👍
Not really sure what your asking. But you can assume that many functions go through the TIPM for fusing and relay amplification. If you can find the circuit in and no power out on the corresponding amplified circuit, you have your bad circuit.
I used an online schematic for the standard trailer 7 pin wiring pig tail. I couldnt find one for the truck itself (part of the reason I made the video) I followed the dealer installed, trailer pigtail back where it was spliced into the truck. Identified the wire colors from that point. From there I just started looking for those wires on the back of the TIPM. It was easy to validate the wires I suspected because the RH signal wire was still working and producing a flashing test light. The left hand (not working) was validated by checking continuity back to the back of the truck. Hope this helps.
No I had to order in, as I recall, it was overnight though. Its been a while though so my memory may be sketch. Different stores may have different stock levels.
James, you can say that again! This was expensive and I was sweating bullets hoping I troubleshot it correctly. If I had taken it in they would have charged me another $800 ish for parts and labor. Outrageous! I use my truck to tow quite a bit so I really had to get it fixed. People have saved me so much money over time sharing their lessons learned, I thought i would try my hand at a diy to help out as well..
No one makes new ones that I know of. You have to buy a reconditioned one as I did. I am not associated with anyone, Im just and end user like you. I did a quick internet search for 2004 TIPM and found tipmrebuilders.com/product-category/2004/dodge-2004/ram-2500-dodge-2004/ No idea if they are any good or not. You may have to do some calling around. Maybe engage the salvage market too. Good luck.
I have exactly the same problem. it's opposite !!! my trailer works not my truck. AND my headlamps don't work right, one works on high the other works only on low
Same truck with slightly different TIPM (electrical) issues. 🤔 And it was such a great truck it just has a lot of gremlins Trailer Lights work great (consistently). The truck electrical gets weird about every 3rd time I start it - - Sporadically the Head Lights go out, Tail Lights work, No Radio, Windows out, Door Locks out, Dash Lights and Gauges go out, Heater and Climate Controls rarely work, etc ... , a real pain 😵 - - I RESET it all by removing positive on BOTH BATTERIES, which lasts for about 3 maybe 4 starts, so I keep the right tools in the drivers door panel so I can fix it on the fly 🥵 Now I'll replace the; 🤑 -- REPLACE the "OLDEST BATTERY" on the passenger side with a NEW BATTERY 🤑 -- REPLACE the drivers side and passenger side window controls 🤑 -- INSTALL stock Halogens Head Lights, (SELL present KOOL LED Headlights to some poor soul on EBay) 🤑 -- INSTALL New Quick Disconnects on BOTH BATTERIES positive and negative posts 🤑 -- INSTALL New Relays throughout the TIPM 🤑 -- New Prayers for the above to work thru this problem so my truck is reliable again 🤑 -- If the above stuff doesn't work I'll get my TIPM Rebuit ~ at about $300 🤑 -- If all the above stuff doesn't fix it, I sell the TRUCK to the highest fool (that I don't know personally). Done 🥴 Hmm, 🤔Now, Let's start with my 2008 Dodge Ram 🥴 🤑 🥴 🤑 🥴 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑 🥴
You are completely wrong I just worked on a 2019 Dodge Ram 2500 which had the same problem in the trailer tow plug but was right turn and stop, left turn and stop, 23:46 taillight, and backup light not working there was nothing wrong with the TIPM after checking all wiring I started checking the fuses I found the following fuses that were burnt F28 backup light, F29 tailights, F53 left turn, F81right turn all these fuses I replaced and everything at the trailer plugs work while these fuses were burnt the lights on the truck were working fine so you are very wrong in saying that both the truck and trailer plug use the same fuses they do not they are all seperate fuses some are mini fuses while some are more expensive fuses like $7.00 bucks each you had better go back into your tipm and read the info in the lid or go on Google and see the proper info videos there that show all the different fuses and what each circuit each is for you even showed a complicated way of checking continuity of the circuits I have been working on electrical problems in both vehicles and trailers for over 60 years and have never seen as many mistakes as you showed in this video which with the replacement of Four fuses would not cost a customer and arm and leg in labour fees the proper place to start is check the plug then the fuses in the TIPM and by number then if the fuses show good then get into the wiring and also there is another plug you never mentioned that the lldrivets side inner fender must be removed to access for proper diagnosis of the trailer harness it is right where your feet sit when you are seated in the truck but in the wheel well and is suceptical to corrosion.
I am "Completely wrong" and you know this because of your experience on a 13 year newer Ram TIPM??? Sounds like they fixed the weakness in these older units. Trust me, I wish I had more fuses to protect the relays that power the system.
Jesus Christ, I thought I was going crazy for half a day........this video saved me🥰
Oh man, thats good to hear. It drove me crazy too, thats why I put the video together. best of luck!

I have the exact same problem and couldn't figure out why. Thank you for doing this, I know what to check next.
This drove me crazy, so I had to put in a crappy video to try to help the next person along. I really hope you get it fixed.
This was a great video, my RT signal for the trailer went out. TIPM fixed my issues as well. $540 from O'Reilly Auto Parts, + $300 core.
Hey thats great. Glad you were able to sort it out, sucks they are so expensive to replace though.
This was just the video I needed. Thanks for posting.
That's awesome, hope it helped!
Trailer hazards work, nothing else. So, had tipm rebuilt 3 years ago and problem solved. Today... back to only hazards again.

People in the forum said it needs programmed? Will the pcm communicate correctly without anything further than a reset? Plug & play?
It doesn't need to be programed but it is important to follow the instructions. You have to turn the key on and let the TIPM read the truck. Then you turn it off and then start it. As I said, I had to go through the clear codes process to get everything to work even though there were no codes indicated.
Always coming down with the knowledge. I love your content man.
Thanks brother! Hopefully it makes sense for someone having troubles.
@@TreeTopFlier That's my thought every time I post a how-to on one of my obscure problems.
Great video!! with a great explanation of the wiring for these trucks trailer lights
Thanks! 👍
Did you consider the disassembly of the box and replace the turn signal(3)relays (soldered)rather then buy a reconditioned box?

@Paul T Which exact relays? My LH trailer turn and running lights are out as well and want to replace the relays first before the TIPM
Does this work with 4WD and electronic shift transfer case?

Did you use any schematic to verify the wires in the ticm
Answered you on your previous post
Did you use a schematic to ensure those were the right wires? Thank you for the video

@@TreeTopFlier thank you. I’m trying to do the same for my bed turn signals. Very helpful thank you.
Very useful. Thank you so much.
That's great! This problem kicked my butt. That's why I thought to share this.

@@TreeTopFlier well anyway I appreciate your video.. mine lost the right turn and the new one is on its way..not a Dorman but has lifetime warranty
@@gabrielkopp2036 Come back and let everyone know if it fixed your problem.
@@TreeTopFlier I will let you know..the tipm is supposed to show up at my house Tuesday the 27th

guess what I need a new TIPM they discontinued making them for my 2004 and I guess they're not available anymore unless you can hook me up

Problem I’m having at turn signal bulbs going out in tail lights
