    भगवान भला करे Mr Bald. when you helped that man crawling in the street It brought a tear to my eye as I reflected back on a similar unfortunate young man I saw In Thailand while I was at a restaurant owned by a very disagreeable and demanding Thai-Chinese man who continually barked orders at the staff and occasionally at the patrons while he violently lashed stray dogs with a bamboo cane.
    As the crippled young man (about my age at the time) crawled past me and the mostly European and American customers, I saw they were visibly appaled and repulsed by the sight of him. Two French women demanded the owner remove him because he was spoiling their meal, and the owner barked at them to "be quiet!" as he approached the young man with the strip of bamboo in hand, and just as I expected to see the hapless young man take a lashing as painful as just obliged to the mutts I thought: "The sight of that will be more than I can bear to witness." But to my astonishment, the owner whom until that point I deemed a heartless monster, instead brought out a carpet, a pillow and drink for the young man followed by a full meal. The owner then ignored the demands of his patrons sat on the ground next to this young man, chatted and joked with him until he finished his meal so as not to let him eat alone.
    That experience had a profoundly humbling effect on the patrons and I left pushing back tears. After that, whenever I felt the compulsion to pre-judge someone that image returned.
    As Mark Twain so poignantly pointed out:
    “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
    I hope the man crawling in the street is actually doing better financially than other able people, and not being used by some street mob, but either way with some compassion like you showed, you never know he may be able to achieve as much or more than most.
    Thank you.

    • @ProcalcitoninC
      @ProcalcitoninC 6 лет назад +38

      Thank you for sharing that. Sadly beggars (both able, pretending or handicapped) have an extreme street live, which is unfathomable for people who have been fortunate enough to avoid homelessness.
      They live in communities which live by different rules.. Street rules. Though the law is equal for all, I doubt a lot of fuss is ever made for a wronged beggar.
      One small example : I wanted to give blankets to some beggars for winters underneath a flyover & I was stopped by one of the local people who knew me, saying the one who will get it, might even get killed for possessing that blanket by another who will want it. They have extreme lives. Esp for any women born amoungst the homeless. They are the second most unfortunate people to live, in my eyes.
      Most unfortunate is the Psychiatrist patients who have been abandoned by their families, leading schizophrenic or utterly disorganised lives on the streets, sometimes without clothes or in tatters, covered in muck from head to toe. That's the most pitiful state. They don't even beg for money.
      Life in general is painful. "every man (person) bears his own cross", but sometimes I think, the weight might be inhuman for some to bear.

    • @jackoneil3933
      @jackoneil3933 6 лет назад +11

      @Halal Big Mac McDonalds Yes, I would say that's not unlikely, and I alluded to that in my comments. He may even be supporting a family by capitalizing on his misfortune, and I would have to ask if there is any legitimate reason to begrudge him for it, or rather is it not unreasonable to appreciate that if he is making more than a professional, in a way that helps offset his misfortune?
      Some might see parading his misfortune as exploiting sympathy for income, but is that anymore abhorrent than taking money from hard-working people, in the name of helping the poor and disabled and wasting 75% as is done in the U.S.: fivethirtyeight.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/flowers-welfare-reform-1.png?w=288 while the disabled are for the most part given a stipend to be shut-away and forgotten. My guess is that the man in the Indian street could have more self-esteem than the disabled in the west and even many who live in luxury.
      The point I believe Mr Bald and N Banerjee below are trying to impart is dispassion as a form of compassion, In much of the world, the disabled survive or die only on the individual more than the collective compassion of others wherein the 1st world we are removed from witnessing close-up the suffering much of humanity endures, and I'm not sure that makes us any more compassionate. Some of the most caring and compassionate people I've encountered are those who have suffered and witnessed suffering in some of the poorest parts of the world, regrettably, it's not always the case for those who have given into resentment, scorn and hate in light of desperation.

    I am from Varanasi. Grew up there and moved to metro in Hyderabad, lived in Bangalore and now live in Navi Mumbai. Have been to US and UK. Nothing compares to Varanasi though.
    It shows humanity as a whole. The good, the bad and the weird. That's why it's considered so spiritual. It makes you question where you belong in the world and what you're thankful for. It hits you with joy and beauty and ugliness and sorrows of humanity all at the same time. You can find people who are post modern and people who still live in the stone age all in the same area. You question where you have come from. The city asks you to let go of something. It can take away your pride and arrogance or just turn you nihilist and let go of all care of the world entirely. I found my spiritually in an atheist and stoic existence. It depends what you're willing to take away from the emotional overload.
    Varanasi/Indian people have the annoying habit of spitting. I have personally never been spit on after living there for 15 years. The best way to avoid it is stay conscious of your surroundings. The idea is if you're in the street corner someone will be spitting paan there at some point. Just stay alert. Chewing tobacco is an addiction for many and not a pretty one. And it's a big problem. The good part is that people are getting aware of the flaws and correcting them. We Indians do correct each other all the time. Have personally stopped hecklers from bothering tourists so many times. The poverty is what has resulted in those flaws. And when a country is left in shambles and poverty by colonisation, it takes time to rise up. Takes even more time when you're trying to do it democratically. Not trying to take a jab at UK here but the resonance of colonial exploit is still there. Placess like US or UK or even Gujrat tries to hide that ugliness and Varanasi doesn't. That's the only major difference. Just a walk down the street reminds you that the problems don't go away if you hide them. So yeah, its still the best city to grow personally, maybe not the best to live in. Om Namah Shivay.

    Humbling. Thanks 🙏🏽 for walking through and permitting me to see and experience the realities of life around the world. You are very courageous and compassionate. I was especially moved by the young man that you gave money too. I’m ashamed of my “much,” in comparison to so many’s lack. Utterly disgusted with myself in this regard. I sincerely desire and hope to do more for all of mankind in this regard. -j

    Music heard in the background briefly around 7:42 is a rendition of the sacred mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" sung by Suresh Wadkar. He is one of the most popular singers in India, and in 2020, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri.

    When you see a poor guy literally crawling through the street begging for money, it makes you feel guilt and shame for ever complaining about our petty little problems. I've been fighting back the tears ever since I saw that. God please bless that man...

      Nah, I have it way worse. I once had someone litter 5 feet away from me. Can you believe that? There was a bin right there as well! Disgusting. Street gangs are getting worse.

    Have been following your vlogs on India during all these lockdown months... To be honest I've learnt about my country from a different perspective! Great work buddy! Some day I don't know whether you have been or not, come to Kolkata and other certain places of West Bengal! You will love it!
    Carry on!

    I'm a fairly new subscriber catching up on all your Indian videos. I'm a tall ginger lady with long red hair so I stood out big time when I went to India in 2015. I've learned a ton of Hindi myself so I always enjoy when you speak Hindi with the locals. I enjoy their shocked reaction lol. I visited the golden temple as you did, and the Haridware part of the Ganges, where I also saw poor invalids like the one crawling on the ground.
    Side note, I wonder if you have ever visited Egypt? I can't seem to find any videos of yours visiting there. Would be nice to see your take on it. Zamalek is nice and quiet, on the river Nile.
