Today, I'm diving into a classic hit -Stevie Wonder's "Superstition." Join me as I experience this iconic song for the very first time and share my honest reaction with you all.
In this video, I'll be breaking down the song's incredible instrumentation, Stevie Wonder's powerful vocals, and the timeless groove that has made "Superstition" a beloved track for generations. As always, I'll be giving you my real-time thoughts and emotions as I listen, and I can't wait to hear what you think as well!
Stevland Hardaway Morris known professionally as Stevie Wonder, is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. One of the most acclaimed and influential musicians of the 20th century, he is credited as a pioneer and influence by musicians across a range of genres that include R&B, pop, soul, gospel, funk, and jazz. A virtual one-man band, Wonder's use of synthesizers and other electronic musical instruments during the 1970s reshaped the conventions of contemporary R&B. He also helped drive such genres into the album era, crafting his LPs as cohesive and consistent, in addition to socially conscious statements with complex compositions. Blind since shortly after his birth, Wonder was a child prodigy who signed with Motown's Tamla label at the age of 11, where he was given the professional name Little Stevie Wonder.
Wonder is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with sales of over 100 million records worldwide. He has won 25 Grammy Awards (the most by a male solo artist) and one Academy Award (Best Original Song, for the 1984 film The Woman in Red). Wonder has been inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is also noted for his work as an activist for political causes, including his 1980 campaign to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a federal holiday in the U.S. In 2009, he was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace, and in 2014, he was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
    Lyrics
    Very superstitious,
    Writing's on the wall,
    Very superstitious,
    Ladders bout' to fall,
    Thirteen month old baby,
    Broke the lookin' glass
    Seven years of bad luck,
The good things in your past
    When you believe in things
    That you don't understand,
    Then you suffer,
    Superstition aint the way
    Hey
    Very superstitious,
    Wash your face and hands,
    Rid me of the problem,
    Do all that you can,
    Keep me in a daydream,
    Keep me goin' strong,
    You don't wanna save me,
    Sad is the soul
    When you believe in things
    That you don't understand,
    Then you suffer,
    Superstition ain't the way,
    Yeh, yeh
    Very superstitious,
    Nothin' more to say,
    Very superstitious,
    The devil's on his way,
    Thirteen month old baby,
    Broke the lookin' glass,
    Seven years of bad luck,
    Good things in your past
    When you believe in things
    That you don't understand,
    Then you suffer,
    Superstition ain't the way,
    No, no, no

Stevie Wonder is a very normal, down-to-earth guy.
MANY years ago (early 80's), a friend and I went out for a late night snack in Beverly Hills (I grew up there) after a night at a local dance club (we called them "discos" back then, and my friend was the DJ).
There was a purple stretch limo double-parked out front, and in the large corner booth near the front door was Prince and his entourage, including "Chick" his huge bouncer. All with the "Look, but don't get near" attitude.
While standing in line for a table, a few people behind me is Stevie Wonder and a friend of his. Standing in line with everyone else, waiting for a table.
He ended up being seated literally right behind me, back to back against the back of the booth.
Some fan came up and sheepishly asked him for an autograph, and not only did he sign it, but when the fan started walking away, he called him back and started talking to him for quite a while.
When we left (we were done first), I saw his white and gold Rolls Royce parked in a meter half a block away. Whereas Prince wouldn't sign autographs or even allow fans to get near, and double-parked his big limo out front, Steve Wonder parked down the block and walked, waited on line like a normal human being, and then not just signed an autograph but was interested in talking to his fan.
Classy guy, and I'll always remember the difference between the two of them.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have gone to the Forum in Los Angeles on May 13, 2011 to see Prince in concert and be blown away when Stevie Wonder guest performed with him! Since May 13 is Stevie Wonder's birthday, Prince lead everyone in the Forum in singing "Happy Birthday" for Stevie. Getting to hear and see Stevie Wonder perform "Superstition" live was amazing. Then, by some incredible good fortune years later, I actually got to meet Stevie Wonder in person at the Disneyland Hotel (where I used to work) and shook his hand! Stevie Wonder has an incredibly long and storied career and body of work. Three of his albums in particular are absolutely essential for a deep dive: "Innervisions" (1973), "Fulfillingness' First Finale" (1974) and "Songs In The Key of Life" (1976). They are three of the most amazing albums ever made, and the fact that he wrote and recorded them all in succession within a four-year period is staggering.

As you know Stevie wrote this for Jeff Beck after hearing Jeff fooling around on the drums, he was fooling around waiting for Stevie. Even though Jeff isn't a drummer Stevie liked the grove and say down to an electric piano and came up with his part. He told Jeff he would add lyrics and give it to him record. When he recorded it and sent the demo to Jeff. Stevie decided it was a big hit and ended up releasing it before Jeff did.

I remember him doing an anti-drunk driving ad sometime in the 80s. He was shown as a passenger in a car, saying that he'd drive himself before getting into a car with a drunk driver. That was after his car accident, so I'll assume that he knows what being in a crash is like.

Jeff Beck was a British rock guitarist who rose to prominence in the '60s with the group, "The Yardbirds," which also included Jimmy Page.
Jeff Beck went on to form several other popular groups after "The Yardbirds" broke up and has a large catalog. Beck's collaborations with other artists generated some fantastic music.
(Page, of course, went on to a little group they originally thought of calling "The New Yardbirds," but everybody said that name would go over "like a lead balloon." So they went with something different. 😉)
Wonder has a genuinely *huge* discography, and has influnced other musicians for more than 50 years.
Plus, clearly, chicks dig him. 😁

Good pick, Lady Diane! This was Stevies first LP were he shrugged off the Motown hit machine and got his own band, wrote his own songs. His reward for the success of this LP/Single was a huge contract from Gordy, and it paid off big-time for the next 4 LP's. I was 14 when I saw Stevie play it on Sesame Street." 9:23 Beck was a bad-azz crossover guitarist, and was rated one of the top 10 GOATS in a Rollong Stone/Billboard poll last year. " Boogie On Reggae Woman" is one I think you'll love.

This is Motown, it's kind of a specific subgenre of Soul, Funky and Disco music blended together. Stevie Wonder was one of the faces of it. Motown was a label and promotion established in Detroit that brought R&B and Soul music and.black artists into the mainstream despite the segregation laws.

Jeff Beck was an outstanding guitarist who played with the Yardbirds (famous solo on Shapes of Things), did a lot of solo work under his own name (without vocals), and a lot of collaborations with a wide range of vocalists. Many consider him the equivalent of guitarists like Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen, though he had a different style. You might appreciate his song "Since We've Ended as Friends", an instrumental in which he makes his guitar so plaintive that it can evoke tears. He has plenty of other material from the twangy acoustic guitar on Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory" to the spiritual "People Get Ready" with Rod Stewart, to the dark "Venus in Furs" sung by Johnny Depp to his own bouncy "Come Dancing". Check him out!

Yes Diane, asking "who's Jeff Beck" is sorta like asking "who's Elvis"! But, don't worry, we all still love you and your video's! Beck was (passed a few years ago) one of the 1960's most famous guitar player's, he was right up there with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page in popularity.
Steve had a long career and lot's of Top 100 hit's starting in the early 1960's and well into the 1990's & 2000's. He was one of the first act's to use a Synclavier (early synthesizer) in the studio and on tour in the early 1970's
One of my favorite Wonder songs is "Sir-Duke"!
If you like Steve Wonder check out a guy named Herbie Hancock.

Great song! Try "Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight and the Pips.
It's older, but people were a different breed then. They sang about life and it's experiences. Read lyrics sometimes, they will tell you a story that you or someone you know can relate to.
People will speak their hearts in their music!
