Well, just so you know, the first time I bought the Z9 I send it back. I had the D500 and the D850, loved both of them. About 6 months later after they did the firmware update - V3, I broke down again. I now have the Z7II and the Z9 but I miss my DSLR cameras. The lenses were my major reason and I'm really happy with the Z9 now. That said, I keep thinking of buying a used DSLR. But, I'm a guy that still misses the F5...
I almost went for the D850 but deep down I knew I needed to get with the times! I just ordered some film for my F4s! I’ll be shooting some film in a future episode. Get yourself another F5!
There’s plenty of fresh film out there and developing is super easy. The Darkroom.com will send you a prepaid envelope to ship your film. They develop the film then email you the scans and you can select to have them printed. The Film Photography Project has a huge variety of fresh film.
Picking your film out, taking the photos, shipping the film out and waiting the two weeks to get them back is all part of the charm. Plus it’s a great way to get rid of the last bits of your cash that’s left over after buying that Z9 😂
I have upgraded to the Canon R7, a couple of things I wish were different, but just getting used to it. The thing I am not too happy about is changing knees and hips!.
Just takes time to adjust Bill, the advantages of mirrorless are so worth it in the end.. great video as always, an inspiration to me to get off my ass & get out there 👌
I guess I’m just trying to create a dialog. We’re getting a lot of good feedback in the comments. The Z8 is obviously a phenomenal camera but everyone is lead to believe it’s going to be the greatest thing you’ve ever held in your hands. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the camera so far. I definitely don’t like the way the viewfinder looks compared to a dslr or SLR. I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Video blows the D500 away, but the picture taking experience is behind the D500. Thanks for watching. I’m going to continue the learning process with this camera system and I can wait to get the most out of it. People have asked me in the past how I deal with the cold so I thought I’d throw some of what’s working for me in there.
I hear ya on the mirrorless view finders....especially for birds. I liked my DSLR view through the lens far better. The birds seemed easier to find; especially birds in flight. But, my mirrorless cameras blow away my DSLR's I've had when it comes to video. Nice outing Bill - I didn't get cold at all! haha
The video was shot with a GoPro action camera and I’m sure there are millions of better monochrome images than the ones that I post. As far as the abuse of my gear, Nikon has asked me repeatedly to stop being such a mutant with their gear. Their desperate cries fall on deaf ears. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year 🎉
The lens hood clicks into place with a nice sounding snap. I know about that button. I’ve read that other people are having this problem too. I’m putting my Tamron 150-600 on my film camera 😂.
Give it some time. I transitioned from the D810 to the Z7 a while ago, and after leaning the ins and outs I loved the z7, out of the bat I regreted TBH. Lighter, faster and produces amazing images and videos.
Yeah, I’m definitely liking it just the change for me. Editing as well, I did everything on my iPad Pro in Lightroom. The I Pad doesn’t recognize Z8 files. So now I need a real laptop. 😂it’s all good though. Learning new stuff is good for my brain
The Z8 is pretty close. It even has a DX mode. I love my d500 but it’s been shutting down and needs to be re booted at the worst possible moment. I have to pull the battery out then put it back in. Usually missing the shot. The Z8 body is pretty much the D500 body. The viewfinder experience sucks though. They say the new Z6 has a better view finder
I have had various mirrorless cameras over the last decade… but have gone back fully to DSLR and rangefinders. Mirrorless is “fine” (said in a slightly negative tone) and there are some situations looking at a screen can be useful, but optical is just more enjoyable long-term. I guess that’s a minority viewpoint, though, based upon the major players’ not updating their DSLRs as of late (or potentially ever again). If the D850 is the last of the line, and it looks like it may be, I suppose I just buy a spare or two and that should last the rest of my natural life alongside the F’s I own.
That’s how I feel about my F6! D850 is good enough to use forever-from an image quality perspective it’s the same as the Z8, and has the familiar DSLR OVF experience. No question it takes more skill to use DSLR AF, but that’s not likely an issue for you.
Except the viewfinder, I agree. I’m just old and like to complain. I’m new to the whole mirrorless system. I’m excited about giving this a chance. Headed to the coast to look for snowy owls soon. Thanks for watching!
I basically go out without any plan other than exploring and hopefully shooting some images. I have to pick a title out of something that happens in the video. I actually do feel a fondness for the D500 over The Z8 right now. So I went with that. I could have titled it “Otter tracks” or “I saw some deer” but right now in my life this new camera is a huge deal. I’ve never spent this much money on something that wasn’t a car or my house. You definitely have a point but this new set up and figuring it out is going to be my focus for a while. Thanks for your input.🙂
You are too old for Z8 camera.
Absolutely! My brain doesn’t work like it use-ta could
I need to upgrade from my lumix gh7
@OG-Rarities.UnseenUnreleased lots of great choices out there
@@wildbillgreen I'll wait for the z9II and trade up
@OG-Rarities.UnseenUnreleased good plan!

@@wildbillgreen My problem is accessing the film (not outdated) and getting it developed. Major issue in the PNW.

Thanks Mike! I’m sure once I get used to it I’ll grow to love it. 😊
Mike-Mclvor-GET ERR DONE !!!
You will@@wildbillgreen
Thanks!
I was hoping for the details on this argument and learned more about battery powered socks and tracking. Perhaps another title would be appropriate.

Miss my D500 too. Will take out for a spin pretty soon. I also much prefer an optical viewfinder
I’m still getting used to this new fangled tech 😂
As a Canon guy I went to an R5 from a 5D4. Happy with mirrorless in every way. ButDSLR is still a good backup
I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Some of the technology is amazing
With all the tracks you saw, this would be a good area to set out a trail cam as long as there isn't much people traffic.
Great idea! Some dog walkers come by but that’s it. Especially in winter

Yeah, you can’t beat the mirrorless for video and image tracking
Was your video done with the Z-8? I did better monochrome images with my Nikon F, and they must be paying you to carry your gear so carelessly.

Nice! Who's version of "God rest ye..." is that that you used for the Peregrine video?
That’s in the RUclips music library. DJ Williams is the name.
I have same setup, my lens hood won’t pop off like that, any chance yours is defective or broken?
It must be defective. Sometimes I’ll just put it on my seat and it comes off. I’ve put some tape on it. Maybe I can get Nikon to send me another one.
There’s a button on the lens hood maybe try pressing it. You should stick with your d500 and lens from 1980

I am waiting for a true mirrorless replacement for my D500...so far Nikon has not given me any to do that

Just a cool day, that is it
Very cool 😊
0:15 Z 9 you said funny
I was in a trance looking at those deer 😂😂
@@wildbillgreen you may !
Give it time... the Z8 is a beast of a camera but takes a bit to dial in. Once you have you will never look back.
I’m doing a deep dive with the setup using Steve Perry’s videos and his book.
I would argue the original Z6 mark 1 is better than the D500, but next to a Z8 there is no discussion. The Z8 is far superior in every way.
