@hello1234 exactly. White women fit the beauty standards best and are very protected in our society, so therefore they face the most media coverage when gone missing. It’s not anyone’s fault but the media. And yea people could sit here and say “well there’s a higher white population, so of course the media will appeal to that” but that doesn’t mean the media shouldn’t give other cases as much attention

Youth and beauty are powerful factors in our “concern” for a victim. In Canada, there have been literally thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women. There was a national inquiry, but it took years of political pressure to prompt the Canadian government to conduct the inquiry. Whether the study will improve the situation remains to be seen.

First of all, I want to say the tragedy with Gabby's death is horrible and unacceptable. No family should have to endure such pain. The controversy here is on the "media" - an external set of news reporting entities. Dr. Grande cited a well-known study on this topic. But as he noted, the research is limited and the FBI data was somewhat confounded. However, a more recent study was done by Dr. Danielle Slakoff on disparities in coverage of missing women based on ethnicity. Her research uncovered the feedback of one news reporter who blatantly told her they don't report missing women of color very often because they want high ratings - hence the focus on young, white women (particularly blondes). In summary, Dr. Slakoff's work reveals large disparities in coverage biased against women of color. To be fair, there are counterexamples. I have noticed that John Walsh has dedicated many news segments to people of color - not just young white women. In addition, David Paulides covers many cold cases long forgotten throughout the world. He even uncovered one I had not heard of in rural AZ where I am from. I would encourage Dr. Grande to review Dr. Slakoff's work or perhaps collaborate with her as a colleague in the field.

No this is sadistic abuse of her life & 'Ted Bundy Syndrome'. Nobody cares about victims at all, this is about one person only Brain, he did this on purpose to get all the focus to be on him so it is more 'Ted Bundy Syndrome' there are plenty of RUclips videos with young beautiful blonde women who are drug addicts wandering homeless in the streets but nobody cares about them, this is exactly the perception of Gabby. The whole reason behind Brians total destruction of all her efforts was to reduce her to this type of spectacle which is exactly the same as the spectacle of recording young blonde attractive drug addicts wandering around it is all misogynistic schadenfreude perpetrated by men & women alike & Brian knows this*. I need to finish your video but I would be surprised if you really believe that she has any advantages over any minorities considering she is dead & all her dreams completely obliterated this is more 'Ted Bundy Syndrome' because nobody cares about her *they enjoy the sadistic aspects of how she was treated by Brain all of these advertising dollars are because of Brian not Gabby. Brian knew he would murder her & create this spectacle *not Gabby*. Please dont blame already & tbh eternally marginalized abused tortured women *for the attention seeking hysterics of a garbage psychopath like Brain. Nobody will ever give a damn what she wanted to do with her life, (ever, do you? to you she's just a white woman so you fell for his bs) it is all Brain the loser psychopath. Brain is the one who created this & advertising dollars for you -- not her, don't blame her. You should re-do this or delete it it is uncharecteristic of your more empirical insights.

You and the news industry should talk about all people that in the same predicament no matter what color of the skin or how many ratings. You Dr. Grande should do more research about people of color, however, I as a spectator, take responsibility also. I was into this story not because of alligators, I just stunned to see a beautiful woman with so much to offer to the world kook up to this man. What I was more surprised is to find out that she got bitt up and she still cries when she was told not to be with him. We need to educate our children when they are little to walk away from this type of relationships. But this is something we never think is going to happen to us. He was not only not supported of her, of what she was doing, but he put her down. The way his family behaved was also chocking. I really hope they pay for it. It's not messed up, it's how the system works. If more people exercised their 5th amendment rights then the cops would have a much harder time at doing their job. But most people are ignorant of their rights and many wind up incriminating themselves, basically handing the cops everything they need. People have been brainwashed into thinking that if they get a lawyer too soon then it makes them look guilty, so they volunteer information that CAN and WILL be used AGAINST them. Miranda rights exist for a reason, and the cops/investigators are never your friend. Their goal is always to find cracks in your armor/story. There aren’t that many cases where so much information is available to the public WHILE the investigation is taking place. People love to consume true crime media, period. She had to call the cops on her boyfriend right before she disappeared. I'm sure he killed her. Id actually like to share her name to honor her (even though I like staying anonymous online)

Being pretty is part of the equation but it only goes so far. One of the main elements is that we have a known suspect that's on the run. When that happens, it's often shared in local media. Police ask for help finding suspects in my area all the time and gets thousands of shares. The reason why it's national news though is because it spanned half of the United States so he could have been anywhere in between Montana and Florida. People are always quick to try to hunt a known suspect down. This is much different than most of the other missing persons cases where no one knows what happened or if there's a suspect. Can't exactly hunt someone down in that scenario. It also helps that they had a large online presence and there's lots of video footage to share.

She was a fellow woman and also a fellow van lifer. I’ve been feeling for her but hurt at the same time because my own people do not get this same coverage. In fact, I have many friends who’ve gone missing from my reservation and other reservations near AND they’re nearly never found. i appreciate you talking about this toPic
Dr Grande. I felt bad for feeling the way I did but I know feel like my feelings are absolutely valid. We’ve had a few missing and murdered indigenous women who had had coverage. Savannah Greywind being one of them. However, I believe it was due to the severity of her case. Her poor baby was ripped from her poor mothers body while she was still alive. I hope that we can find a solution to get everyone the coverage everyone needs. Every race matters.

I think the general "newsworthiness" element is key - which is basically your last point. Here in the UK a story about an old woman beaten in her home by intruders often makes front page news (at least in the tabloid press). As a result, older people often believe crime against them is a major thing. But it is front page because it is rare, but horrible. In the UK statistics show that most victims of crime are actually young men between the ages of 18-25 - but crimes against them are hardly ever reported because it happens all the time.

    Hi Dr. Grande!
I wrote my dissertation regarding gender differences in intimate partner violence. I specifically looked at the differences in the most severe form of partner violence, intimate partner homicide (IPH). As you know, it’s best practice to use recent studies to guide your research. I had absolutely no problem finding research articles about male homicide offenders within the past five years. When I researched women, I had to go back to 1985 to gather at least 10 articles regarding female IPH offenders. The dearth of literature regarding female IPH offenders is severely disappointing. It’s as if they assumed “women rarely kill, let’s ignore this area of research.”
In my research I came across a couple of interesting findings. Mostly, it is difficult for juries to convict women for crimes, as they feel that it must have occurred for self-defense reasons. Jurors are more likely to view the woman as a victim rather than being truly abusive. Conversely, women who were considered to be masculine were more likely to be labeled as violence perpetrators because they’re more similar to men. The more “manly” they are, the leas sympathy they receive. These women are likely to be seen as violent because they don’t exhume softness and victimhood.
Second, intimate partner homicide is hard to predict. There have been many studies of homicidal men who have never abused their partner. That is to say, past abuse does not predict future homicidality. Men without violent background have killed their partners.
There were two possible predictors in the literature: controlling behavior and stalking. I’m the studies men were found to have stalked their partner before the abuse or had great control in the relationship. Once the man lost control of his partner, he “snaps” and kills her.
Speaking of “snapping”, that’s mostly not a thing. Although men reported that they “snapped” they also described slowly justifying the killing of their partner during the days and months before the homicide. Convicted men reported believing that laying hands on a woman is bad, yet they committed a homicide. The justification process allows the person to not feel disturbed by their thoughts and future behavior.
Lastly, while there is very little research on family annihilated and it’s mostly about men. If I recall correctly, this was 5 years ago, there may have been some be or two articles that included women. I’m assuming this hasn’t changed much.
I was going to post the comment about the controlling behavior in your Brian Laundrie video, but forgot. 🤦🏻‍♀️
    Thanks Dr. Grande!

      A very interesting post.
I would be interested to see a comparison between IPH partners who have a long history of being physically abusive, and those that don't.
I suppose there could be any number of factors as to why the historically abusive don't wind actually killing their partners.
There is a very wide gap between laying hands on someone and doing enough of anything to cause death.
So in some ways it isn't particularly surprising, although it does seem to run counterintuitive.
One might assume they are related, but giving it some more thought... that assumption doesn't make much sense

I think #2 and #3 were fairly accurate. Think about it, all of our childhood stories are about white characters so, our brains are shaped early for this paradigm. But in the grand scheme of things, how does it change? We all have to independently realize that human nature is the same no matter the outer shell and evil is all around us.

I also think this case is massive because Brian has come back without her and then taken off, hiding. People WANT him to be found and justice served. With many other murdered women/men/etc cases, we don’t see them suffering before hand-when we do-sometimes their case becomes massive, like the black man George Floyd that was murdered by the policeman having his knee on the guys neck-we saw him vulnerable and alive-and then he died- tragically. The Jodi Arias trial was also huge, her murdering Travis Alexander the way she did was also a very big media story, and rightly so. The police footage of her denying any knowledge of murdering Travis etc. We saw his friends talking about the way she had been stalking him etc. Very Sad for anyone that has a family member or friend murdered.

Many young woman could have been in Gabby’s shoes since unstable relationships are not that uncommon for people at this age. Not one was covered. This case hit the jackpot because she checked all the boxes FEMALE, WHITE, BLONDE, and ATTRACTIVE.
For you to deny it is absurd and shows your white privilege. When you can not even admit something so obvious it just shows the rest of us how hateful this society is geared toward anyone outside of the ideal.

The newsrooms that report these crimes focus on women who share the same socio-economic class and race as them, that’s why they’re more interested in telling stories about them. As a member of the Cherokee tribe, I've found the number of mission Cherokee women alone to be quite disconcerting. The US has a long tradition of abusing native people. When whites realized they could never succeed at enslaving natives, they did everything they could to destroy natives and their culture instead. The US slaughtered nearly 300 helpless and unarmed Lakota people at Wounded Knee, and there were soldiers given metals for their "heroics", and the abuse continues in smaller forms to this day. From things like my cousin being given field sobriety test often due to the assumption he must be an alcoholic because he is native, to the fact that the police use lethal force against natives at an even higher rate than they do against blacks. The only bright spot is that more and more tribes are able to meaningfully help their members now days.

I think a lot of people recognized similarities in their personal experiences with abusive partners, also parents who unfortunately lost their children due to it. I’ve also seen people say the case has brought focus to it in general, that maybe it could help other victims.
Also when the cop claimed the 911 caller said he never hit her, but a call was made public that contradicted it. Not to mention how this story played out. It’s bizarre. I fully agree it’s not an example of WWS.

Brilliant analysis ! I was stunned when someone accused me of falling into the "Missing white woman" trap because I was gripped by this true story. I was compelled by the Gaby Petito case because of its unusual complexity and strange narrative about what would normally be quite ordinary young people . It has every twist and turn you would expect in a movie rather than real life ! Every woman can relate to Gaby; regardless of colour or ethnicity simply through the act of being a mother or sister or friend or by their own experience ! Men can relate to the story not just as a father or friend or brother but by desiring to call to account one of their own ! The tragic story of a young woman wanting to be loved and chasing her dreams ,but inadvertantly choosing to follow a path that leads her to her own doom and eventual death is compelling to everyone who has ever loved or dreamed. Every body can feel empathy for a love gone so wrong ending in a life taken regardless of ethnicity . This tragic case is made more facinating by the fact this nightmare scenario is illustrated by so many pretty pictures . This story illustrates the folly of a fantasy taken too far . We all dream and that is what ,we the public share with Gaby ! Her whiteness is irrelevent .Dreams should not end in murder !

I have had people in my life murdered by an ex or spouse, and their stories hardly gained any coverage while they were missing. Can most of us relate to Gabby, sadly yes. But IMO People tend to relate more with those they identify with. So if people see their loved ones; Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, Daughter, Son, in the victim(s) they are bound to care more about the story. I don't think it's done purposely, at least not by most. As someone who's tragically lost both relatives and friends, I feel for her family and every person that truly loves her while simultaneously recognizing that bias exist. I also feel for those that loved Brian, not knowing his true nature, that's a different type of hell.

The funny part is even the black females in the audience knew the white girls names...The media can only report the news, they can't force people to like it. If there is no new information, the case/story will die. The last big story I remember is Kobe Bryant's helicopter crash. For those who don't know, Kobe and his daughter are black and this was in the news for at least a month. It was tragic even though it was fairly clear what happened. This is NOT about race, it's about a father's love for his daughter and tragically he died with her. The whole reason Kobe even bought a helicopter was to get around traffic and spend more time with family. There were many variables that made this a huge news story. Does anyone remember the white people on the helicopter that died?
I liked Michael Jordan growing up and stopped watching basketball before Kobe was a big name. The thing is...it is rarely about race and more about variables that are more complex and time consuming to dissect.

Great analysis of the situation, and I agree. I don’t think it’s missing white women syndrome. It’s because they had a following on social media, were documenting their trip, had lots of pictures, seemed happy, all until she went missing. It was a mystery unfolding before our eyes, and everyone had a lot of questions. He came back without her, then police footage of their conversations with the police came out for everyone to see, and everyone came up with their own theories. People started saying that you can’t always tell from social media how a relationship really is, was he an abuser, was she an abuser, why wasn’t he talking to police and cooperating? The media had A LOT to talk about, and so did we. With others who just go missing, we don’t have all of that.
Just like with Natalee Holloway, it wasn’t because she was white, it was because it was so unusual, there was video of her with those guys, they lied to police, her parents were there looking for her, telling the media all about it. The family obviously had money, so they probably made sure their daughter had the coverage she had. Plenty of other white girls go missing and don’t get that coverage, just as minorities go missing and don’t have that. A black man in his 20’s went missing, and some woman said it was the same as the Gabby Petito case. Um.... no, it’s absolutely nothing at all like it. He’s a grown man who just didn’t show up and might not have wanted to be found. There’s no photos of him on a trip with a person who came back without him and wouldn’t talk to police. She’s trying to make this racist, and it’s just not.

I would ask you to substitute Gabby and Brian for a same-sex white female couple. I have no doubt they would NOT get the same amount of coverage in the media. Also, the murdered same-sex married couple have not gotten half the media coverage as Gabby, and there is an unknown assailant roaming freely in regards to their case.
And I would also ask you substitute missing Jelani for a white, young, handsome male geologist. The media would also heavily cover such a disappearance.
Race, gender, age, and socioeconomic status DOES play a part in media coverage, and Gabby's media coverage hit all checkboxes for MWWS classification.

This is something that I’ve definitely thought about when hearing about this case. I know that people hate to bring race into things but as someone who is black and white, I will say that there IS a tendency to give a lot more attention to white women, especially those who are made to look like an all American girl or as one online article put it, “America‘s daughter.”
Think about the Instagram model who was murdered a couple of months ago; look at how quickly and abruptly that story has been forgotten.
And it’s not just about stories being forgotten or getting more or less coverage, a big issue is that the media portrays the missing people or murder victims in a certain way based on their race.

  • @lucylucimo

One very important factor that keeps being ignored is the family of the missing person. Some families, regardless of race or gender, pester the media and law enforcement in order to bring it into the public view thereby increasing the the likelihood of a sighting. More attention to this factor might encourage families to assert themselves more.

The parents then immediately started their own searches. They often do not have the means and the inputs to share information through the mainstream media. I found them because people ask for help and information via Facebook. And that is very difficult. We are in a world where apparently certain skin color determines others' efforts. While God is for everyone. That should be the guiding principle: We are there for each other.
