What a bunch of BULLSHIT! This girl is DEAD. Will you media fuckers ( and of course I don't mean you Phil ) quit trying to politicalize it with racism? The REASON she is being covered in the news is she is well known in social media, the younger generations ( who will soon enough be running the world ) take to social media in droves, so statistically it's a news worthy story. Period.

It's totally true that missing POC are ignored by the media-- and it's vile. HOWEVER-- that's an odd opinion coming from Joy Reid, person with her own News show, who has had EVERY opportunity to highlight these cases. She IS the media. Also, Joy using Gabby as an example felt a bit distasteful being that her body was JUST found. This is an incredibly valid conversation BUT very poor timing/too-soon example.

I don't have a problem with the timing. In two weeks, hardly anyone will give two Fs that this young woman is dead if they even really care all that much now.
It's a story to them. A thing to follow as entertainment/interest. Considering that many of us barely can get through a tiktok video, is there any real confidence that people will care enough about the POC story when the timing is "right"?

I definitely think that BIPOC and Indigenous missing person's cases get swept under the rug. However I feel like what makes the Gabby Petito case, "popular," is how unusual the whole thing is. Also their relationship and interactions are very public. The body cam footage paints a totally different relationship than what was seen online and anyone that's ever been through an abusive relationships could see all the red flags in that video. The police handling of the situation is awful and reminds me of the LAPD in the 70s.
However, I want to ask MSNBC why they don't use their platform to bring awareness to BIPOC and Indigenous missing cases? I think it's hypocritical of them to even broadcast that news story without looking into what they do. I've found out about a lot of these cases by listening to Podcasts.

Great point! I also hear about a lot of BIPOC cases from podcasts. And not just those points about gabby but she had a fairly large social media platform and A lot of the reason some of these cases get big is like everyone thinks the boyfriend/husband did it and it adds a lot of clicks for people wanting to see the newest evidence against that person especially when they act like gabbys bf did. And comparing her to male BIPOC isnt really the same cause lets be honest no one really gives a shit when a dude goes missing, its not fair but it's true, I can think of like maybe two that were big and I cant even remember their names.

I think the fact that it was obviously the bf was what got people to care because they felt there was something they could still do. The fact that they were influencers and that there was police footage made it possible for people to make content off of them (and this comes with ups and downs cause the case got a spotlight). In most cases, there's no where to start because they go missing and we have 0 info on them

  • @kate-ne
    @kate-ne 3 года назад +1029

I think the discussion about BIPOC missing persons cases getting less attention is an important discussion, but I personally feel like the Gabby Petito case has a ton of detail already made public, which is not typical of missing persons cases. There is released 911 audio, body cam footage of a chilling domestic dispute, a very public manhunt, and the couple had a pretty relevant social media presence (not just their life but pinpointing key areas of their location). It's hard not to want constant updates when we have SO much detail already known. I think there should be discussion not just about media coverage for missing persons cases with BIPOC individuals but police participation to provide details where the public can possibly help in the search.

600,000 people go missing in the US every single year, like 1,500-1,600 a day. About 2 or 3 cases a year get the coverage that Gabby's case did. 99.999% of missing white women do not get that coverage. People dragging race ino anything they can is why people stop listening to any of it at a certain point.

I think there is an element of “missing white woman syndrome” at play here, but I also think that there are other aspects of the story that make it attractive to the media; like their social media presence (vlogging their travels), the public facing side of their relationship vs. what was happening behind the scenes, the initial mystery of it and now the hunt for Brian Laundrie. It’s all rife for a fascinating story, one that people will tune in for.

True - - if there wasn't police footage of vlogging footage of Gabby... the would have made the news, but the coverage would have been regional or local. There are lots of factors that contribute to Gabby generating so much interest. Obviously, her being white plays into it hugely. I am Maori, and a victim of DV and systemic racism from the police, so I totally appreciate how race is a major factor here. However, she is also beautiful, so pretty privilege comes into play. She has a big online media presence, which similar to the Shanann Watts case, gives the media a lot of information, videos and pictures, in order to create stories with. Lastly, the timing and the way that the Laundrie family have dealt with this... even finding the body(which was miraculous) so quickly, has helped keep the story going. It is a lot of things, not just her whiteness.

Police often get farther in investigations when the subject of them feels more relaxed because he isn't a suspect yet. In interrogations, they are often more willing to talk if they are not under arrest and told the police just want basic info...but as the police ask questions and get the person to give details and timelines, they get details and contradictions they can use at trial to convict.
Since Brian already seems to know he is going to be arrested and is a suspect, I think it's likely they will call him a suspect as soon as they get some evidence implicating him. Everything is circumstantial right now. But if they find a murder weapon with both their DNA on it or something... DNA results take time, though...could be weeks.

She isn't a celebrity, either. She purposely left her suburban home and lived in a van as part of her IG narrative. Most of the comments on this video are people saying they don't know who she is and not many celebrities with millions of followers or money are like OMG Gabby... only the 400K followers she had at the time. There's a reason why the majority of national news coverage on missing people tend to be young, blonde, non-brown eyed white women. Honestly, I think cases like that blow up just because people are nosy. I mean, what is the newsworthiness of a missing persons case? Aside from any trends like "10th women in [city] abducted in one month" which warn citizens of any safety concerns, why do people care what happened to some random girl in Grant Teton? And I'm not saying her story wasn't worth hearing - it was, that's why obituaries exist, so people can hear someones story. So again, what is the newsworthiness? I think its just that, as a society, we're nosy. I think we do sensationalize it to a point, but also gawk at the fact that "oh this could happen to me or someone I know" but what makes that newsworthy?
When writing a story, you need an actual story. I think (so don't quote me, I didn't look this up extensively before I wrote this and I'll admit to it) I've heard that a lot of those missing indigenous people cases have some sort of corruption going on behind the scenes where officials or police are involved, or sex trafficking where it's untraceable. The people essentially tell the news what they want to hear with clicks and views. If you're not captivated by a indigenous woman being captured because it has limited information because that info is in the hands of corrupt police trying to cover it up OR she's become a victim of sex trafficking which is virtually untraceable, that story isn't going to get as many clicks because it's lackluster, and it's going to tell the news outlet that people don't really care. So my point is: it's not just news outlets at fault here. If people want to see other cases blow up like Gabby's did, they need to show they care and are interested in more stories like this getting the spotlight they feel that they deserve.
It's great that Gabby's case got further with how much traction it built online which resulted in how many people giving real and helpful tips after they could see names, faces, etc. If people want that for all cases, I think it's time people stop exclusively placing the blame on news outlets, saying "why don't they report on...". We have a civic duty to uphold too.

With regards to the "missing white woman syndrome" case, as a white Australian I brought up a similar concern and distaste with our own media reporting as it pertains to reports of white Australian citizens being detained overseas and the lengths at which our government seem to go - publicly - in order to bring those people home, in stark contrast to the seemingly nonexistent reporting of non-white nationals being detained or held overseas under the same circumstances.
A perfect example of this would be the Schapelle Corby case, where a white woman was detained and subsequently jailed in Indonesia for drug trafficking - she made national headlines repeatedly for years here, and I personally put a lot of it down to her ethnicity and the fact that her and some of her white family members had been party to drug-related incidents in the past. Given her initial arguments were typical of other 'young white tourists' to the area - she was unaware she was carrying the drugs, she'd met a charming local but didn't get their real name, etc etc. (Brokedown Palace, anyone?) - it is unknown what the statistics are of foreigners to Indonesia and other nations in that area that are tourist hot spots with strict anti-drug laws that are detained and/or charged and then imprisoned, and just what the demographic split is between white tourists and non-white tourists.
It almost seems as if our white-dominated media networks, in a similar way to our patriarchally-dominated western societies, have biases and agendas in their structures of fearmongering and narrative-control...

    • @mcbean1

I do think the Corby case was more important for casting light on the laws of Indonesia and what punishment could follow. A huge amount of the discussion around her case was the 'crime' she committed was considered extremely minor, yet the punishment was extreme and the place she was entering was rife with drugs anyway.

Something else that also might be relevant to this discussion is that (at least not in my memory) the non-white cases don't even make it to the news. So from my perspective its not as if I'm seeing a missing person's case about a white person and a person of colour and decided that one is more interesting than the other. I'm only seeing one side which makes me wonder if there is one level of the newsroom floor where these cases get removed or if they aren't considered by journalists in the first place.

While I agree that POC’s cases tend to be swept under the rug more often, there’s some extraneous factors that explain why Gabby Petito’s case is getting more attention aside from her being white.
1.) She has an Instagram with 800k followers who were following her road trip and disappearance in real time. Her fans were extremely worried when things began going wrong.Already explains why her case got more attention right off the bat compared to random strangers who weren’t documenting the last days of their lives to 100K+ people.
    • The unique situation of someone going missing while on a road trip with their fiancé intrigues people more than regular missing cases. Often missing cases are attributed to runaways, getting lost in the woods, possible kidnappings, etc. Gabby’s situation falls outside these common types, which results more interest.
    • Her boyfriend’s behavior and the police calls leading up to her death is extremely suspicious and invites people to act like internet detectives. Not many missing cases have this kind of info released to the public for sleuths to speculate on. The more info, the more interest.

      1) Her IG account amassed a HUGE strong following after she went missing. I know she was popular, but people acting like she had national fame isn't true. She was living the "van girl" life as part of her IG presence.
      2) Agree the footage of her traveling and the police cam footage then her disappearance makes the story more "clicks and shares"
      3) In general, it cannot be denied that white missing women get more news coverage which is the point. How do we get the media to focus on missing women more often without the blonde hair, petite, blue eyed guise is the gap
      4) Her BF is a predator which makes the story more sizzle worthy - even I agree that I'm following the case intensely
      5) The media slant on focusing on some women nationally while others are barely mentioned has occurred for decades and Gabby shouldn't be the spotlight to show such bias. My hear hurts for her family and the warning signs were all over the police cam footage... we need to support more women getting into law enforcement to balance the attitude that whatever a man says is what's actually happening. She looked terrified and her BF did a lot of talking. I bet those officers are thinking twice about letting them go.

Yes, it’s a horrible occurrence, no one deserves this, but I personally don’t have any investment in the story to follow it. The only reason I know exactly what happened to her, who she was, and how her body was found, etc is because headlines have been pushed to me as notifications and Phil has talked about it two days running now. So, Joy Reid, please, why are you asking *me* this when you should be perhaps asking yourself?
I’m guessing part of it is personal reflection in the story, seeing yourself in the victim: Joy Reid would be more invested if the victim in question was a person of color. I would be more invested if the victim was an openly gay individual. Most of the country is white, so most people care about Gabby. And I’m not saying this is morally right or anything, but that’s my best guess as to why this is. Honestly this whole conversation just feels weird to begin with.

However, my point still stands that Blizzard isn't going to be forced into anything since the only people getting the money at Blizzard are at the very top- as the settlement I had originally referenced is literally only looking out for the board members and Investors.

And more so I would say it was the way she dissapeared. If she had just one day not returned home, it wouldnt be that "interesting". But the fact that we know shes been with her boyfriend on a long trip, she suddenly stops responding and now we see the boyfriend return home in their van without her! Because we can all point our finger at the guy with a 90% certainty that he at the very least abandoned her but most likely murdered her, yet nothing can legally be done without concrete proof. Not to mention this guy has now dissapeared. Idk trying to compare this particular case to missing white woman syndrome is like wondering why the WNBA pulls less views than the NBA. People watch the other not because their sexist, but because they're more interested in it. People want to watch this case because it has more bizarre events compared to the average kidnapping, disappearance, or murder. And like you said that doesnt discount that white woman disappearance syndrome is still an issue for other reasons, I just dont think it's really comparable here.

I am in several RV forums and this story was spreading before any actual news announcements. It was blowing up on the RV reddit page, being shared on multiple facebook RV groups, and beginning to be shared by RV youtubers. Then the media took to it. Evergrande: It's not just them. This is basically how the entire Chinese residential development industry works. Housing development is one of the major pillars of the unprecedented economic growth in China and it is entirely based on leveraged money and depends on constantly increasing growth. The entire industry will collapse as economic growth slows down. I worry that this is just the first signs of it.
It's not a problem exclusive to China. This is how you can have American billionaires who consistently lose massive amounts on every new project, as long as they keep growth up they can cover the bills as they come due. Once growth stagnates, they collapse. It's just the American economy doesn't literally identify it's success with these schmucks as extensively as the Chinese economy does.

So I wanted to explain why your comment and lot of Phil's take on the Evergrande issue are somewhat overblown. I am not doing this to condescend but his points are extremely sensationalistic and reach very far. I say this as a huge long time fan but the stretches people are making here are not rooted in facts or reality. The comment you made on billionaires are losing "massive amounts on every new project", is simply not true on a mass scale. If this was true then every bank in the US would fail, considering large portions of their balance sheets consist of Commercial Real Estate, real estate developments or speculative lending. The 2008 failure is why Dodd-Frank created capital requirements, risk limits, and stricter underwriting laws for Real Estate loans. This is an extremely reduced explanation but the risk of evergrande defaulting is spread out across multiple firms and they reserve for exactly this type of issue. People are profiting off of scaring investors and market panic, and I just wanted to share that most of this is completely overblown. However, the contagion and fear is real and could cause real issues because people are acting off of emotions and not logic.

    • @BoomerKeith1
      @BoomerKeith1 3 года назад +2

Okay, that helps me understand why some are linking this to the financial crisis the US went through with the banks and "too big to fail". • @ViolentMLG

As you said, its not just exclusive to China, America does this with TONS of things.
Its partially why we end up in recessions.
Its the foundation of capitalism, accrue debt in hopes for growth to pay back said debt and be bigger/more sustainable after the fact.
This same model we actually apply to our cities, we expect growth and keep building suburbs (which are proven to not make money taxation wise due to insane maintience cost) in hopes that growth will continue, and new money and inflation will pay for the maintience of the older neighborhoods, its partially why cities like Detroit got completely destroyed when the population dropped because they didn't have new money coming in to maintain their older suburbs.
Our cities aren't built efficiently like the rest of the world.
America's economy is all one in the same, the only difference is, America doesn't have the balls to ever do anything to rich people/corporations, our tax laws and ability to accrue debt allow our country to be a haven for businesses, but its also the ONLY REASON our country is as rich as it is, therefore, we don't bite the hand that feeds us.
China on the otherhand doesn't seem to care as much about growth but rather they're trying to prevent recessions by not allowing businesses to over leverage debt, which is smart IMO, but whether burning businesses will work or not, time will tell.
As long as labor is cheap and trade is big, I don't see them having any issues.

    • @BoomerKeith1
      @BoomerKeith1 3 года назад +4

@@laurel1018 I absolutely agree with you on everything you've said about the US banking system (I'm been a financial analyst for a long time), however, when it comes to looking at the Evergrande situation and how it may (or may not) correlate to the 2008 crisis, if what the original commenter said is true and this is symptomatic of what the entire Chinese industry is doing, then it's very possible that if those companies were allowed to fail it could cripple the Chinese economy.
I don't know enough about the Chinese real estate industry to validate what was said but if it's true then China will have no choice but to prop Evergrande up and secure their financial standing.

How many news outlets are saying this tho? It seems like it's primarily one person, Joy Reid, discussing the issue and other outlets simply seem to be talking about Reid.
Personally I don't think this is a case of white woman missing syndrome, like other people have stated there is an usually high amount of information about this case circulating, so of course people are going to be more invested. But I also think it's fair to point out about missing white people getting more coverage than POC.
As far as who to blame, of course news outlets are solely responsible for what stories they cover, so they deserve much of the blame. But at the end of the day, they're a company. They don't act on morals, they act on profits. And if people tune in more often when a white person is missing than a person of color, they're going to lean in to that. It's never reported on the news as the majority of the news stations in Utah are Fox or KSL based both of which have been notoriously dismissive at best and hostile at worst, the only reason I know about it at all is that I work with charity groups who work on the Navajo reservation, and have family who are members of a local Blackfoot band. It's a constant, people go missing, a lot of times they supposedly just "wander out into the desert never to be seen again". This coupled with the fact that a lot of times indigenous communities are underserved medically and over policed makes it's more and more clear that the American genocide of indigenous groups never really ended, we just stopped talking about it.

And that’s the thing, it’s because it’s a story you’ve heard a million times, told to you in detail with witnesses, suspects and all. But only when the victim is white. I cannot name a well-known African-American victim, nor a Native-American one. They are never talked about, the public is never warned of on the run suspects like this and it is never covered, neither in the news or later in true-crime (no matter if the crime is unsolved or not). Interesting about “missing white woman syndrome” but I personally think this case was so interesting and got so much attention for 2 reasons. 1) the tag line “two people go on a road trip and only one comes back” is extremely interesting and confusing. 2) social media (specifically TikTok) are so much more heavily used. I hope more cases are covered like this one however.

Agree… lots of white women go missing too and get no coverage… the reason this one has captured everyone is because it’s been an ongoing mystery that’s unfolded on social media… so many things about it are unusual.

Nope it pure sensationalism to distract from the real issues. Mainly the looming market crash that is now finally rearing its head. How much have you heard about Gabby verse the new market crash indicators signaled by the Chinese market just this past week until now?

@@Lianne-issa People are seemingly so focused on race nowadays to try and point out racism, that everything is racist regardless of context, outside influences, or even common sense. Only gets worse whenever police get involved

But only if they’re white women

I wholeheartedly agree; the boyfriend coming back alone and the couple having a big Tiktok presence really made this whole case a talking point in almost every conversation (with coworkers, family friends, etc.). I think they're comparing apples and oranges because I don't think the missing situations were exactly the same.

This is the first I'm hearing of the Evergrande saga and when he first started talking about it, I thought this was going to be tied to the Ever Given boat from Evergreen Marine that got stuck in the Suez Canal and that THAT was why they were so much in debt. Nope, just bad financial practices.
