    It's almost time for the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Pre-Release! In this video I give you my thoughts on the new cards for Magic: the Gathering's newest set, focusing on how they play in Limited.
    What my grades mean:
    I use a letter grade system, and my grades usually fall into a bell curve (Very few A’s and F’s, lots of C’s.)
    A - Bombs that are always your first pick, they completely warp the game in your favor, and they easily pull you into their color(s). You always first pick these. These are cards you are ecstatic to have in your deck. Most sets have 15-20 of these. Tend to mostly be Mythics or Rares, though sometimes an Uncommon gets there.
    (Unstable Glyph Bridge, Zoetic Glyph, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal)
    B - Premium removal spells and highly efficient creatures, often worth first picking. Still strong enough to pull you into their colors, but not quite as game or draft warping as A’s are. These are cards you feel good about having in your deck, and you would play several copies of most of them. Mostly Uncommons and higher, but there are usually 5-10 commons that get there too.
    (Oltec Cloud Guard, Inverted Iceberg, Join the Dead)
    C - Filler. These are cards you neither feel good or bad about having in your deck. You play them if you’re in their colors, but they don’t tempt you to go into their color at all. Usually includes reasonably efficient creatures, good combat tricks, and removal spells. These appear at all rarities, but are most frequently Common. (Ironpaw Aspirant, Brackish Blunder, River Herald Guide)
    D - Playable in an emergency. These are cards that you don’t feel so good about playing, but in a pinch, sometimes you just have to play them. These are often inefficient vanilla creatures or overly narrow cards. These appear at all rarities. (Frilled Cave Wurm, Glowcap Lantern, Seeker of Sunlight)
    F - Unplayable. These are cards that you should never play. There are very few of these in modern Limited formats, but they do appear at all rarities, with the most usually appearing at Rare and Common. These are cards whose effects are pretty much useless or overly narrow. (The Enigma Jewel, Canonized in Blood, Hit the Mother Lode)
    There are two categories of cards that I give two grades to: Build Arounds and Sideboard Cards.
    Build Around: These are cards that need special synergy to be at their best - synergy that won’t just come naturally. For these cards, I give one grade indicating how I think the card will perform in a typical deck of that color, and another grade if you manage to get there on synergy. (Gargantuan Leech, Terror Tide, Throne of the Grim Captain)
    Sideboard Cards: These are generally cards that are Ds or Fs in your mainboard, but can perform much better out of the sideboard - at least as a C or higher
    (Tectonic Hazard, Malicious Eclipse)

    I know this: when I watch Nizzahon's set reviews, I run with around a 55% win rate in limited. And, when I don't watch these set reviews...I get dumpstered.

    I feel Archmage's Newt is a trap. Early game you won't have any good cards to flashback, your opponent will gladly trade their 2-drop with your 2-drop, late game a 2/2 with no evasion will have a hard time getting in. Removal spells are the thing you will most likely want to flashback, but if you can attack into your opponent to get them, you probably don't need them. Card draw spells, the other thing you'll want to flashback, are too slow to main deck at this day and age.
    In short, the Newt might be nice to have, but it's not p1p1 material.

      Looks like it will effectively be a vanilla 2/2 a lot of the time to me, unless there's a combo somewhere that lets you get it through.

    • @zeoxyman
      @zeoxyman 6 месяцев назад

      This was my first impression too, but thinking about it a little more - what about spree spells? Play a cheap mode early, then cheat out the full value late?
      I know spree says "additional cost" so you'd think flashback 0 wouldn't help with that, but I found at least one thread that claims that cost reduction would work. So, idk, maybe worth checking rulings?
      I'm still not hinging my draft on this specific pairing though.
      EDIT: Oh and Jailbreak Scheme is a common that fits the spree niche and helps this get in, though it's not great after combat

    • @OneEyed_Jack
      @OneEyed_Jack 6 месяцев назад

      @zeoxyman spree costs are additional. You'd only save the base cost. That said, there are ways to get in, or nobody would ever play 2/2s. If nothing else, it becomes a "must block" that gets something else through or sets you up to spring a trick. It's not Snapcaster, but it's not a trap, I don't think.

  • @hiygamer
    @hiygamer 6 месяцев назад +13

    My one worry with Fblthp is that taking advantage of him will often mean spending 2 turns not really advancing your board. For example, you play him on 3, and then take turn 4 to plot something off the top of your library. That means that going into turn 5, you won't have made a significant board contribution since turn 2. If you're on the draw, that feels especially risky

    Heres a question/thesis for a potential discussion:
    From my perspective, drafting has been a play environment that has predictable variability. Going to a draft you generally know what is in the format and the odds of facing certain cards, decks, and play styles. With the increasing prevalence of cards in the vein of “The List” or “The Big Score”, have you felt that the variability and unpredictability of draft has increased or decreased your experience playing limited as there are some cards you can’t prepare for OR cards too powerful for cards design for a draft format?

  • @XiaosChannel
    @XiaosChannel 6 месяцев назад +7

    i feel you've overlooked how you can plot and outlaw turn 3 then double down turn 4, and get 2 creatures out of that. still that's pretty specific but i would put it more like a B- buildaround

    • @OneEyed_Jack
      @OneEyed_Jack 6 месяцев назад +1

      It's not that specific, since you'd be drafting with it in mind. There's plenty of plot outlaws to be able to do it often.

    Nimble brigand looks awesome to me. There's a bunch of random things that trigger this. If it hits once it's a solid card. If it ever hits twice or more than it becomes a great card. • @hiygamer
      @hiygamer 6 месяцев назад +1

      I think Fblthp isn't always going to be a bomb. Like, playing on curve on the draw feels pretty risky. If you plot something off the top on your next turn, that means you're going into turn 5 not having really added to your board since turn 2. Yeah turn 5 will let you double spell with some potentially large spells, but you'll have given up so much board advantage by then that it might be too late.

    Double Down won me my first pre-release in a deck of blue and black. D? Nah. Having at one point 4 deathtouch bodies doubled up from the Servant of the Stinger and Rattleback Apothecary is insane. The set has barely enchantment removal, so as long as you have one outcast in hand you recover its cost. Casting Rictus Robber doubled up with the zomby token also double up after you trade a deathtouch, is, insane. The set is full of outcast so it's relativelly easy to fit it in different kinds of decks built around them.

  • @Shawnybravo42

    Take the fall looks like a sleeper to me. For one mana draw a.card it doesnt take a lot for it to be good. You should be able to use this both defensively and offensively. A common play patter i can see happening is turn 2 both player play 2 drops, turn 3 2 drop attacks into other two drop and blocks, you save yours from dying and draw a card. Thats a big deal.. how many outlaws you have will be a major factor. Double blocks will become extremely easy if youre able to get the -4 consistently.. if youre able to either win in combat or save a creature with this, thats a lot of bang for your buck for one single blue. Also, i love phantom interference. Weve seen make disappear and pay 2 counters be decent in limited the upside of doing both making creature and countering or just making a 2/2 when in top deck late game is really good. C+ looks like an appropriate rating but i coild see it being even better.

    How does Geyser Drake interact with PLOT and SPREE? Being able to plot creatures 2 turns earlier on curve would be huge and being able to gorge on spree cards would be nice as well. For Draft, it's good. For Limited, this is a x4 common for blue-heavy decks.

    • @JasonOshinko
      @JasonOshinko 6 месяцев назад +3

      Geyser Drake doesn't interact with plot. Plotting can only be done at sorcery speed (i.e., on your turn), and also it's not casting a spell, so the plot cost is not reduced.
      For spree, the entire spell would cost {1} less after calculating the total cost with all chosen modes.

    2 things about Jace:
    You loot with his first ability.
    You load up on FREE spells for your next turns; AND, those cards don't even NEED Plot, it just says 3 or less.
    And then, you use ALL of those Plotted spells together with his -6 to DUABLE the payout.
