That would be Paul Hellyer, former minister of National Defense. He was the one who spearheaded the Unification scheme back in the 1960's and did away with the British rank insignia, uniforms and traditions.
All I can say is I'm REALLY glad I was in the old RCN , 63-74, ....the square rig, ALL the traditions, seamen not seapeople, Cornwallis as RCN only, no hurt feelings, and rum !
Couple of points, this one might seem highly pedantic (which it is😉), but the RCN initially adopted the rank system of the Royal Navy (RN) which predated the existence of the Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force, which also adopted their ranks from thier British counter parts. The Royal Navy ranking system existed long before aircraft were even invented, or when Britain had a standing army and Army commissions were purchased within private armies or the army of the British East India Company. Accordingly, I would (from my admittedly biased outlook) not have used the word “equivalent”, but rather… “similar to that of the RCAF or Canadian Army”. 😆 More importantly, though, the rank of Captain (N) is used to distinguish it from the Air Force and Army “Captain” rank, a Junior Officer equivalent to Lieutenant (N). (Fits within my first point as well). Finally, I accept that some traditional ranks must change in recognition of the full integration of women into the military, but don’t get why they could not have left the traditional lower deck titles E.G. “Ordinary Sailor, Able Sailor and, Leading Sailor.
The traditional ranks were ordinary seaman, able seaman and leading seaman. What they should have done was just change seaman to sailor if they wanted it to be gender neutral.
Hate hurting feeling? I was a sailor, I was never a sailor 3 class 2nd class or 1st class. I totally understand wanting to be inclusive, but if the word man is in the rank and that is an issue look out HUMANS.
As a former member of a Commonwealth Navy it is sad to see that someone felt it was necessary to change both insignias and titles used prior to 1953!

Loud & Clear.
It's been a total shambles... getting worse.
Yeah, what was wrong with Ordinary seaman, Able Seaman and Leading Seaman?
@@SteamboatWilley It was like that up until a year or 2 ago. And don’t play dumb, there’s 2 very clear reasons “seaman” was changed
I disagree. I think it was a positive change.

It would be awesome if you could do a video on sea cadets before they become Junior non-commission members 2:19
