They will likely ask for your references at the CFAT/FORCE appointment. Your third reference could be anyone you would consider a mentor. It is not a super deep dive reference check, they need to verify they know you and that you haven't demonstrated anything that could be a security risk.
Hi, thank you very much for this video. You are very concise and straight to the point and informative. I Very appreciate. I was wondering, once completing all the medical exams and the interview, and once your background check is cleared, do you have any idea how long on avg it could take to be told whether you get accepted or not, for Full time NCM position?
In the Reserve we usually do 4 or 5 enrolment ceremonies per year, so you could wait an average of 1 - 3 months until the next one. In reality we are usually finalizing your file right before an enrol ceremony so the wait can be very short. In the Regular Force you may go on the competition list which means the wait could be longer. If the position you want is full, the wait can be long as well, waiting until the next fiscal year for additional positions to become available. In my personal experience, if your position is available and your file is ready for enrolment, we usually do it very fast, sometimes within a week or two of your interview.
Hello @Prairie Sailor, thank you immensely for your professional and organized videos. I am U.S. citizen residing in the U.S. currently and was planning to return to my native country of Canada to join the Reserve Naval Warfare Officer (formerly M.A.R.S.) community. Quick questions please: Is a Canadian birth certificate and proof of provincial residency sufficient evidence of Canadian citizenship or does recruitment require a Canadian passport? Also, it is unclear as to what the training for Reserve NWO entails: Does such training schedule involve sequentially the (1) Basic Military Qualification Modules #1-3 + (2) Naval Environmental Training Program + (3) Weapons, First Aid, Other Sources + (4) Basic Military Officer Qualification (a.k.a. CF Leadership and Recruit School at St. Jean-sur-Richelieu for 12 weeks) + (5) Second foreign language training for 2-9 months + (6) Training on officer responsibilities at Naval Officer Training Centre in Esquimalt, British Columbia, for 12 months (IS this identical to Regular Force NWO training at Naval Fleet School Pacific in Esquimalt, British Columbia for 12 months>) training + (7) Formal on-the-job training towards Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate and Naval Warfare Officer Professional Qualification while posted to operational ship for ~24 months + (8) Specialty Training for 4-6 months?
Great questions! You can apply with a Canadian Birth Certificate and Driver's license for photo ID, so you don't need the passport right away, but you will need a passport to go on Ship. All sailors need a passport with them in the event the ship needs to leave Canadian waters.
For NWO training you are on the right track. 1. Basic Miltary Officer Qualification (BMOQ) - Modules 1 - 3 is 9 weeks total: 1 week online, 3 weeks at home unit, 5 weeks in Valcartier Quebec for NAVAL RESERVE. BMOQ is 12 weeks in St. Jean for Regular Force (you dont have to do both, one or the other, they are considered equivalent) 2. Then Naval Environmental Training Program 5 weeks in Esquimalt. 3. Naval Warfare Officer Training 12 months total in Esquimalt and/or Halifax. In the Reserve this will be done in 3 or 4 month modules over 3 - 4 years. It is equivalent to Regular Force Training, it just takes longer. On the Job Training (OJT) will continue throughout your career. Specialty training will continue, and language training is an option. 1.BMOQ 9 weeks 2. NETP 5 weeks and 3. NWO 12 months will get you qualified and able to go on deployments. Best to schedule a meeting to get all the dates and numbers right, things can change and are slightly different in different regions.
@@PrairieSailor For the "3. Naval Warfare Officer Training 12 months total in Esquimalt and/or Halifax.", is this training can ONLY be done in 3 or 4 month modules over 3 - 4 years? Or can I volunteer to SQUEEZE them into a consecutive 12-month (just as the regular force training), so I can speed up the training process?
@@lmz920621 That's a great question. It is possible for Reservists to go on Reg Force Training courses, often they are in fact the same courses and there is no separate Reserve version. However even for Reg Force I believe NWO Training is done in modules for on the job experience to occur in between. You can complete it faster than 3-4 years if you are available to do courses any time of year rather than just the summer months.

If you have a degree you can still enrol as an NCM and take your commission as an officer later on in your career under the "commissioning from the ranks" plan.
You need to complete training in your primary occupation before applying to NTOG. "Candidates from all Navy occupations and trades may apply, and at a minimum must have achieved their Operationally Functional Point" www.navy-marine.forces.gc.ca/en/specialized-units/specialized-units-ntog-faq.page

Hi Cyril, unfortunately pre-assesment can take a long time. My best advice is to make sure all forms are filled out completely and accurately on the first try. We don't do pre-assesments in house, they are scanned and sent to headquarters. They are then sent back for corrections if required, so even minor errors can cause delays. There isn't much you can do other than to avoid delays by getting the forms right the first time and check in periodically on progress. Good luck with your application!

Sir, I recently finished my CFAT test. So do you know how long does it for medical test call/email? and after medical how long does it take for the interview? Thank you!
It varies at every unit. Usually 3-5 weeks for medical, but sometimes you can get an appointment much sooner. My advice is to both call and email 1x per week to check in on progress. The squeaky wheel often gets the grease!!
@@PrairieSailor thank you sir! Also one more thing if I get hired afterwards in CAF then will I also be able apply for others jobs outside of my CAF job? @@yashpatel1460 If you join the Regular Force you will most likely sign a terms of service contract for 3-5 years of service minimum and there may be financial penalties for ending your contract early. If you enrol in the Reserves you can voluntarily release at any time.
Transferring between components is done through the Personnel Selection Office (PSO). You may contact your local Reserve recruiter to get info on the availability of jobs and request a position, then you submit an application to transfer through your chain of command. You may require a suitability interview with the PSO if you are changing occupations.
As a naval reservist can I transfer into an army reserve unit in the future? Or would I have to apply from square one. I just got into the navy reserves but military policing is very interesting to me and there is only one MP unit in the area.
Is BMQ for naval reservists done along side army and air force recruits or are they done on base. Is the ruck march in BMQ timed? If so how long do you have to do it? thanks in advance.
BMQ for Naval Reservists is currently conducted at ValCartier, Quebec. It is conducted by the Navy for the Navy. I do not belive there is a time limit on the ruck march but it must be a continuous march.
It varies, there are many opportunities to take temporary full-time contracts up to three years in length. You can also transfer to the Regular Force if you are looking for permanent full-time employment.
Hi Prairie, thank you so much for your informative videos. May you please state what are the "certain circumstances" to apply to CAF as a permanent resident? Looking forward to hear from you!
3.3 An applicant is required to be: a Canadian citizen; or a citizen of another country who has permanent resident status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and: undertakes to become a Canadian citizen immediately when eligible to do so; satisfies a special need; and whose enrolment, in the opinion of the Commander (Comd) Canadian Forces Recruiting Group (CFRG), would not prejudice the national interest. "Satisfies a special need" would be having some sort of specialized skill or qualification that is in demand and otherwise unavailable. We do not have any occupations in the Naval Reserve that meet this criteria, but if you a special skill you can check with your local Regular Force Recruiting center to see if you meet the criteria. www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/corporate/policies-standards/defence-administrative-orders-directives/5000-series/5002/5002-1-enrolment.html#qe

Great video - thanks for sharing. What level of swimming proficiency is required (if any) in order to join the RCN Reserves? Are vegetarian meals offered?
forces.ca/en/help-centre//#/view/36
You will need to attempt the swim test on Basic Training, but success is not required to pass the course. Yes, there are vegetarian meals provided.
I want to join part time but I work for Canadian national railway and we don’t have schedule 😞
Can you join the basic training program while still being in high school?
If an applicant is a degree holder but is interested in a NCM role, is there ever an opportunity to become a CO or is the only option NCO?
If you have a degree you can still enrol as an NCM and take your commission as an officer later on in your career under the "commissioning from the ranks" plan.
I'm thinking of sending my application for the Reserve Force this year. Hopefully I will get approved for training by next year summer.
Good luck with your application!
How did you apply. Site 🤔
What about NTOG? Can I apply right after I join the navy?
You need to complete training in your primary occupation before applying to NTOG. "Candidates from all Navy occupations and trades may apply, and at a minimum must have achieved their Operationally Functional Point" www.navy-marine.forces.gc.ca/en/specialized-units/specialized-units-ntog-faq.page
@@PrairieSailor so how long would u think that would take to reach that point?
@@annaholton422 It varies depending on your occupation and the frequency that you complete training courses. I would say 2 - 3 years on average.
@@PrairieSailor so if I wanted to be a boatswain it would be the BMQ than right after, the 12 week boatswain course and was fit for NTOG would that be a hire? Or Is it like policing where I would need need more experience to build that up? I would like to become a police officer as my main career and I am highly interested in becoming a reserve and building my character and resume and the same time. Thanks for the advice
@@annaholton422 yes it takes time and experience to make it to NTOG. You would be eligible to apply once BMQ and Bosn training is complete. It is a competitive selection process. A good stepping stone is the Naval Security Team you may want to check out: ruclips.net/video/CwZg7y2oW0Q/видео.html
Wish there was a way I could join as a US Citizen on a PR Card.
The policy has been updated and you can now apply with a Canadian PR card.
@@PrairieSailor Thanks for the Update, that's Awesome top hear. Now If a U.S. Citizen just went through the Process and got their PR Card is there a Waiting time frame with new PR Card to Enlist or can One Enlist right away with new PR Card if they Wanted to? Also, with a PR Card would my medical records from the U.S be used or would I have to go through a process for all new Medical Records in Canada? Just a few questions I would ask if person if I could.
@@Trippy_Hippy89 As far as I know there is no waiting period. Any valid PR card is accepted even if it is recent. A new medical will be completed.
Hey someone is telling me you cant join the reserves if you don't have a drivers license this is the first I hear of this could you confirm weather this is true or not?
Birth certificate and passport are acceptable forms of ID so this is not true. A driver's license is not required.
@@PrairieSailor Perfect thank you. One last thing i want to join the Navy as part timer in the Intelligence Operator unfortunately the trade isnt "in demand" so i also applied for Naval communicator which is in demand. My question is did i just ruin my chances of joining as an intelligence Operator? will i just be automatically sent to the Naval Communicator Trade because it is in demand?
@@MikeMike-iz9dw I recommend making Intelligence Operator your #1 and Naval Communicator your #2 preference. We care about retention, so if there is a spot available we will often give your #1 even if #2 is in demand. Intelligence Operator is not quite as overstaffed as Intelligence Officer, so you may have a shot.
hi i applied as a boatswain, but needed pre assesment, i already passed my aptitude test. just wondering if they can speed up my process
@@PrairieSailor thank you im from winnipeg, can i change my status to canadian citizen in the process ? Cause right now im not a canadian citizen yet but im waiting for my oath taking

When is the CADPAT uniform worn in the RCN? Is it based on occupation? If so which ones?
Good question. The primary order of dress in Naval Reserve is Naval Combat Dress. We sometimes wear CADPAT for field exercises, or roles when working with the Army or Air Force. None of the occupations we hire for in the Naval Reserve wear CADPAT as their primary order of dress.
Like for example: If I am working as a Regular Force will I be able to apply in CRA and if I get hired in CRA then can I change my Regular Force to Reservist?
@@yashpatel1460yu going as officer brother?
@@parmindersingh6908 yes I appied as officer wbu?
@@yashpatel1460 If you join the Regular Force you will most likely sign a terms of service contract for 3-5 years of service minimum and there may be financial penalties for ending your contract early. If you enrol in the Reserves you can voluntarily release at any time.
Just wondering what are the process if I am Regular force trained already and want to switch to reserves? TIA
Transferring between components is done through the Personnel Selection Office (PSO). You may contact your local Reserve recruiter to get info on the availability of jobs and request a position, then you submit an application to transfer through your chain of command. You may require a suitability interview with the PSO if you are changing occupations.
@@PrairieSailor thank you so much.

As a naval reservist can I transfer into an army reserve unit in the future? Or would I have to apply from square one. I just got into the navy reserves but military policing is very interesting to me and there is only one MP unit in the area.
Yes, you can do a Voluntary Occupational Transfer, you do not need to re-apply. Information on VOTs is available from the Personnel Selection Office.
are positions open for PID ??
PID is currently a "controlled" occupation which means yes it is open for application, however we do not have guaranteed positions available.
How often do you get chances to get to go full time as a reservist?
It varies, there are many opportunities to take temporary full-time contracts up to three years in length. You can also transfer to the Regular Force if you are looking for permanent full-time employment.
Hi Prairie, thank you so much for your informative videos. May you please state what are the "certain circumstances" to apply to CAF as a permanent resident?
Looking forward to hear from you!
3.3 An applicant is required to be:
a Canadian citizen; or
a citizen of another country who has permanent resident status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and:
undertakes to become a Canadian citizen immediately when eligible to do so;
satisfies a special need; and
whose enrolment, in the opinion of the Commander (Comd) Canadian Forces Recruiting Group (CFRG), would not prejudice the national interest.
"Satisfies a special need" would be having some sort of specialized skill or qualification that is in demand and otherwise unavailable. We do not have any occupations in the Naval Reserve that meet this criteria, but if you a special skill you can check with your local Regular Force Recruiting center to see if you meet the criteria.
www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/corporate/policies-standards/defence-administrative-orders-directives/5000-series/5002/5002-1-enrolment.html#qe
The policy has been updated recently and Permanent Residents are now eligible to apply!
Does the Canadian Army have an official channel like this to Educate people on what the process entails?
It's not an official channel, but Desmond Morgan puts out a lot of great Canadian Army Reserve content: ruclips.net/channel/UCFCqjrUV59R4ctrX8XK1awA
There is also the official Canadian Armed Forces channel: m.ruclips.net/user/CanadianArmedForces
So would you have to use your own vacation time at tour other job to do the training in another city? I walk by HMCS Unicorn everyday here in Saskatoon and am interested in reviewing the process.
You should be able to get unpaid time off from your civilian employer in order to complete training and not use your vacation days. "The enactment of federal, provincial and territorial Job Protection Legislation has changed the legislative framework in which Reservists can now seek a leave of absence from their civilian employment or educational programs, in order to be deployed on military operations or to take part in military training"

If one has a criminal record, last offence dating 20 years ago for DUI, what is the rule with RCN Reserve?
Each Reloabilty Status is evaluated on a case by case basis. I recommend you talk to a recruiter regarding you question.
Hello, what are the standards for fitness before enrolling/submitting an application as an Officer? (e.g., do I need to be able to do a certain amount of pushups?)
You must pass the Force Evaluation. Here is a detailed tutorial: ruclips.net/video/QxoVsBFTqJ8/видео.html
