    The written tests are likely as tough as the ones for sailors. If no tougher than the registry exams for a respiratory therapist, than that means I would have like made CPO or better. Might have even made it all the way to Lt. Commander if I advanced to officer ranks.

    What I always found amusing is that people, even members of other branches, tend to be amazed that the Coxswains of USCG Motor Life Boats are usually junior NCO's (E-4 or 5) and it's not strictly senior NCO's or commissioned officers.

    Someone fact check me.. I think the USGC does use a one-hash insignia for E-1.. the only Service branch that has an insignia for the starting paygrade...

      Correct. Another retired Coastie here. The Navy also wears one diagonal stripe for E-1.

      @@Rokeen-Zeboss The bars on an O-3 in the USCG are joined at the bottom and top as in the USN and USMC! Compare them to the Army and Air Force and you'll see the difference.
