In this detailed how-to Motorcycle Pants Sizing & Buying Guide, we walk you step-by-step through the sizing process needed to successfully buy pants online. There are a few basic types of motorcycle pants and we show examples of each type as well as discuss pros and cons. Determining the right size can be as easy as selecting your jeans size to trying to figure out where your natural waist lies. This video demonstrates how to properly take waist, hip and inseam measurements to compare to manufacturers size charts. It's easiest to obtain accurate measurements with the help of a friend and a flexible tailors tape measure, but a length of string will do in a pinch. Nearly all manufacturers require a waist measurement to find the proper size which is just below your belly button for a man and about 1" above your belly button for a woman. Inseam measurements start at the highest point of your leg and end at your ankle bone. Keep in mind when looking at a size chart, that those are your measurements, not the dimensions of the pants. Pants that have short and long versions, as well as adjustable knee armor help a rider get a more personalized fit. Typically there is a separate hip insert pocked on the interior of the hip, but I don't know if those pants come with that feature. As for in or out of the boot that depends on how big your boot is! Generally, touring pants fit over the boot, while enduro and race pants fit in the boot. -CK

Awesome Video. I've never heard a more informed person talk about bike apparel. He is Clear and concise, without stumbling thru his thoughts. Nope! Sorry, but attaching jackets to pants is something that only works within a brand (Astars to Astars, Dainese to Dainese). You can certainly wear them together, but they just won't zip together. -CK

pants and jackets dosent matter. my tip is make sure they fit as close to body as possble..! the better the fit the better protec you have..!
i could go on and on ltell you lot.. the diffents fron leather text and jeans but if you just use your head i think you all will work out what is better for your needs..!

Bodylenght: size 50
Inseam: size 48
Hip: size 58/60 (yes im fat)
im screwed for leather sportsbike/racetrack pants.
Only option is Alpinestars Missile pants(SHORT) and then it wont fit properly I geuss. Not the 100% protection that It should give.

I have a trouble finding a leather pants that fits me. I'm a 5-04 woman and I normally wear 2-4 for jeans. All of the leather pants I tried had too big on my hip, quad and legs when they fit on my waist, or if I go smaller size, it would fit on my legs and thighs but woudn't fit on my waist. I was wondering if I should keep a pants that is not snug on my legs at all but fits on my waist, I heard lots of people saying that the leg armor is useless when it's not skin tight. I bought and returned three pants already but couldn't find something that fits me, please help me!!

hey, thanks for these videos guys, when i first started shopping for my gear (which i bought before my bike lol) it was very hard for me to find gear that fit me well, (not that my size is out there, 6'1" 195lbs) or hard to get retailers around here to give me more information on the types of gear than was posted on the tag. what if i bought a leather pants..but no jacket with the same brand..how do i pair it with?

They are halvarssons/lindstrands (swedish brand). Unfortunately I didn't buy them from you guys, I was just hoping that someone might know the answer to my problem. I've put them inside the pockets of my pants, but I felt kinda stupid putting them in.

David Munoz They should be properly positioned when your knees are bent in the riding position. Off the bike, they will sit lower, and that's fine. I think you have the correct size. -DrewZilla
I just went and tried on some alpinestar track pants and they fit nice and snug in the legs but the waist seems slightly too tight with the clip done up. I was thinking if they was some kind of clip modification that extends it back 5-10mm so it's just that little bit looser?

Can you wear some kind of a regular pant under those "textile" pants? I'm getting a bike just for commuting. I like the looks and comfort of those overpants (looks like my snowboard pants) but I'm worried about protection.
Kazathul I would not be able to fit regular pants underneath the White REV'IT! pants. They're too snug. I would have to go up one size. Overpants are a great option if you're looking for protection and convenience. -Hi-Viz Brian

Not sure about the measurement of the inseam / crotch. Dainese website says to measure from the crotch to the ground floor NOT the ankle bone.

"The inner leg measurement is the distance between the crotch and the ground. It is the distance between the lowest part of the trunk and the soles of the feet measured when standing upright with the feet slightly apart and the weight of the body evenly distributed on both legs."
Please use Dainese's recommendation of measuring to the floor. Keep in mind that the most important measurements are waist and hip size. -DrewZilla

The inseam measurement is incorrect for Alpinestar pants. I don't know about the others. I used the measurement shown here and about a bought a pair of pants, I thought they fit and now I can't return them. I measured the inseam to my ankle bone that stuck out, as the video shows. However, it says on the Alpinestars website that it needs to be measured to the bottom of your leg, all the way down to the bottom of your foot. cdn.alpinestars.com/media//sizing/moto_clothing_EURO_sizing_chart.jpg This needs to be corrected in the video.
Wesley Mahler On all our Alpinestars Pants product pages, we use Alpinestars' own diagram, which recommends measuring to the floor. Most other brands measure to the ankle, but you are correct that Alpinestars measures to the floor. -DrewZilla

I have Alpinestars SMX5 boots. Will the pants be able to go on top of them, because there is a big plastic protector?
It depends on the pants. Leather track/race pants are designed to fit inside your boots, whereas most textile riding pants will fit over top of your boots, even with the big plastic protector. -DrewZilla

Most higher-quality textile riding pants are fine for a slide from freeway speeds. The higher you go above the legal speed limit, though, the better off you'll be with leather. As an example, I wear textile riding gear that zips together. -DrewZilla
Why do you take a leg measurement? No retailer I’ve seen online offers anything other than basic waist size.

+Bear Bite Yes, they fit differently than jeans. Most motorcycle pants are sized in brand-specific small/medium/large/etc sizing or European numeric sizing (48, 50, 52, 54, etc.). Therefore, we recommend using a cloth tape measure to measure your waist around the belly button/navel as well as your hip/seat measurement around the widest point below your waist (basically around your butt). Then look at the size chart linked on each pant's product page on our website. -DrewZilla
Would something like a knee pad still give the same protection or are motorcycle pants necessary?

Sport leather pants are designed to have a slim fit, but you don't need to change sizes. 52 should be correct for a safe fit. -DrewZilla

54 will probably be too loose and too bulky. Leather is thick, so you don't want too much extra material. Leather also stretches, so size 52 will become slightly bigger over time. -DrewZilla

How do obese men size pants? Around the belly button is a LOT larger than what’s below. If I start out with pants around the belly button, the pants slip down beneath my gut in short order; then the pants want to fall down.
3 years and no response. I came here to see if there was any input on this myself.
I still have no good solution. What I do now is wear some cheaper Thor knee/shin armor under my jeans. It’s hot and bulky. Looks ok if jeans are loose. I may do Bohn armor in the future. Maybe riding jeans or overpaints would work better for fat guys. Too, if you call these guys, they can help with more specific recommendations.
