In the end, land acquisition costs were about 5% of HSR cost in China, just like in France or Spain where land is bought slightly above market prices and cheaper embankments are standard. HS2 land acquisition costs went up because the Book of Reference now list properties totaling 70 square km. HS2 Phase 1 being only 192 km long with 51 km in tunnel, the UK is acquiring a 500 meter wide piece of land for every km of surface HSR! The bill should come to about 10% of HS2 total cost. The UK can be proud of her property rights but they don't explain much of HS2 high cost.

It will not become an unfinished building. Some government departments in Beijing will move to Xiongan. Even if there are no tourists, there will be government office buildings there.

I just spent 7 plus hours driving from downtown LA to San Francisco on the major California highway I-5 that is only two lanes in each direction filled with uneven pavement and the occasional pothole. It's amazing that you can go on a high speed train for ten dollars USD. It's cheaper than gas!

When I worked with Siemens to supply China with high speed trains in the 2000s they are some of the most dedicated people I’ve had the pleasure to work with.

I just spent 7 plus hours driving from downtown LA to San Francisco on the major California highway I-5 that is only two lanes in each direction filled with uneven pavement and the occasional pothole. The richest country in the world should have a world-class bullet train that whisks you from LA to SF in two hours in a state of 40 plus million with the fifth largest economy in the world.
In the USA, "there's anxiety and fear as policemen approach you". This sums up what the US is about.
