Another really strong arc, mostly all comedy with some really deep ties. A lot of looking into Tama and who she is, as well as Gintoki. We are sort of entering the 'phase' in Gintama where Gintoki starts facing himself (Kintama sort of ends this phase) and we have a bunch of different reflections of Gintoki that he has to struggle in dealing with. (Granted to some extent that continues through to the finale, it gets more subtle after Kintama.)
The other commenter put in a lot of good points already, I'm glad your friends had fun with it. Next time they ask what it's about just tell them "it doesn't matter." Because really what the show is about has two levels. The first is, whatever the current story is. This was about Tama and Gintoki. The second is the series as a whole, which is about diving deep into these characters over time. "What's it about" is the same answer from episode 1 to the final movie. "Whatever it wants to be about at the moment."

Ohhhh!! That's awesome! I had no idea we'd be entering this sort of "self reflection" part of the story for Gin! Like I said on that other comment, we're now entering the arcs where everything is either completely forgotten to me or is a huge blur, so i'm basically going in blind at this point (save for a few key moments)
Also, yea very true!! it's always just whatever it wants to be hahahahaha, that's a good way of putting it. I'm never good at thinkin gof what to say on the spot lol

I really like this arc, specially the way it explores Gintoki character in a unique way, not by having him explain something or by having a flashback, but by having a reflection of how someone that cares about him SEES him. Everything inside Tama is based on her memories and thoughts, so obviously her main anti-virus, the King, is based on the man who has protected her the most, Gintoki, and it's very interesting how even though he hides his feelings and insecurities the people that care about him like Tama seem to have a good read on him since the King seems to have the same behaviors as him, so by analyzing how the king acts, how he thinks and what does Tama think of him we can get more information about Gintoki.
My favorite bit related to this is this dialogue when Tama starts disappearing in 169 (nice):
"Tama: Isn't he just like you? He has difficulty expressing himself... He's antagonistic... He's all based on you.
Gintoki: You see me as such a shameless person?
Tama: As I observed you and collected data, he evolved into someone more human than I was. That is why I could not stand by and watch him die alone. You should be able to understand... Why he keeps telling you to leave so he can go alone... Why he acts so hostile..."
The parts that always pop up in my mind when rewatching is the fact that a robot made something more human than themselves by basing the model on Gintoki, and the way the King doesn't value his life or doesn't see it as real compared to the lives of his new friends so only he has the "right" to put himself in danger.
Another very interesting bit is the conversation he has with Gintoki at the end:
"Gintoki: There you have it. Your life is no longer yours to throw away. You're more than someone who protects Tama. All the protecting you've done has led to people who will protect you in return. All squirmy-like... Just like a white blood cell.
King: I just had to be the copy of such a difficult man. Even now, I can't offer any words of gratitude or tears... What would you do in this situation?
    Gintoki: Smile."
Also since you have already seen Shogun Assasination and Silver Soul arcs before this rewatch: The fate of the King's father (being consumed by the virus and the virus using his body against the King) and the "Smile" Gintoki mentioned in the dialogue above (Flashback in SA) both hit a little different, I wonder if Sorachi did it on purpose (tho if you cant recall thats prob better, I wouldnt try to refresh the memory before rewatching the arcs again to have a better experience).

YES YES AND MORE YES! It's a fantastic introspective look into how people see Gintoki! (especially Tama of course) Also, I do see what you mean; it's really interesting to see that Tama almost accidentally created something more human than herself. Something we obviously see her struggling with in day to day life. I remember that one episode where Otose gave her some time off and she had no idea what to do with herself lol.
Also I'm not gonna lie I surprisingly forget what you're talking about with the smile; a lot of those later arcs are a blur to me. Hell, I almost completely forgot what this one entailed lol. I guess It has been like 5 years now since I've seen it.
      Appreciate the comment!
