Used to play that for hours at a time with my aunts and uncles. I especially liked the variant where Jack of Diamonds means you're the picker's partner, but it's not known who has the card at first. Of course, sharp players usually figure it out pretty quick, or if the picker has the Jack and is playing it alone.
Never heard or played this before I visited friends in Winsonsin. This is some of the best fun I'd ever had. It's just about every where there. Played it in winter time and we were playing for apple pie shots. Good times
My dad owned a bar in northwest Wisconsin for thirty years. These bar dice games have brought back many memories of my childhood. Thank you for the nostalgic memories you brought me, and Keep ‘er Movin’!
Oh wow, I've been handed dice randomly at the bar and told to roll, and somehow I got free shots. I had no idea what was going on 😂 it all makes sense now. Thanks for sharing!
Good video. I won shake a day once in my life. Pot was won the day before. Only won $16. Had to buy a round for the tavern because I won, it was softball night, cost me over $50.
I lived in Wisconsin for seven years, watched this played a hundred times, I never got it. And after watching this I still don't. But I appreciate knowing there IS a system in place.
Going to the bar with my mom after bowling, softball or volleyball league was one of the best educations an 8 year old could ever have. Brings back memories Charlie!
My grandparents used to take my sister and I to supper clubs and local bars in Waupaca County to play dice and we would sit and drink Shirley temples. I spent more time in bars than School between the ages of 7 and 12. 😂
Moving to Colorado 40 years ago, I was like, “Where are the kids?” as I grew up going to bars with my dad or mom and dad and ordering a coke or cherry or orange soda. My own children from CO loved the family friendly WI bars and taverns on visits with my family. And then onto bar dice. Thanks for reminding me! It’s such a WI thing.
LOL my dad had a bar and i didn't even know how to play this, I'll never forget the sound of people just straight trying to slam that cup thru the bar tho.
My last duty station was here in Oklahoma, and I tried teaching a bunch of them down here the bar dice game and all I got was funny looks. So now we do it at my house with friends. Best way to kill an evening.
I’m dying because back in the 90’s I learned how to play Euchre in a bar in Rhinelander because my parents and their friend needed a fourth player. I think I was 8 or 9 at the time! Wisconsin bars, especially in the north woods are the best place to be any night of the week. From a Hoosier who misses his summer vacation spot.
My parents went to 'da bar' right up the block all the time and left us kids home alone, told me to come get them if someone calls. Here I am 10 years old just strolling in the bar like its nbd yelling "DAD! UNCLE FISH IS ON THE PHONE!!" (Neither my uncle nor his name) and next thing I know I'm sitting there next to my mom drinking a can of coke at 930 at night listening to them cackling and making fun of their husbands lol I know that probably sounds awful in today's world but thats just how it was back then and I wasnt the only kid fetching their parents from the bar for some reason or another lmao
To you all who replied, I truly miss Millers Shorewood Vista, over on Lake George, and wish I could find a really good American Plan Family Vacation spot to head back to the northwoods!!!!! My childhood was awesome after an 8 hour drive from Indiana to just take off running and jumping into the lake. All after hours things besides my Euchre comment are just wonderful personal memories!!!!

Very typical Wisconsin thing to do. Kinda goes with Brandy Old Fashions and Friday fish fry's. Living in Wisconsin myself we almost always do the "Shake of the day" everywhere we go.
I’ve recently moved to Louisiana. I ordered a brandy old fashion sweet and they come back with something that I could see through. I looked at the bartender and said WTF is this I can see through it. You should never be able to see through a brandy old fashion. Does it even have brandy in it???? I literally walked him through making the drink and had him watch carlies video lmao 🤣 thought I was going to have a heart attack.

I used to travel to Wisconsin pretty frequently so got acquainted with bar dice and hammerschlagen. First time I went out one of the other guys in the party had an evening similar to yours and ended up spending some special time with the sidewalk. Good times :)
This was the best bar dice tutorial of my life. Honestly, Ship, Captain, Crew has to be the most deceptively easy game I've seen yet, and it's amazing.
Reminds me of a dice game in the videogame Kingdom Come: Deliverance, I think called Farckle. Specifically a two-player competitive dice game, you need to rack up 4000+ points to win and there's 6 dice used at a time rather than 5. I'll list out the rules below, as best I can remember them. - 1's and 5's allow you to reserve that die with a corresponding 100 or 50 points respectively, followed by another roll of all remaining dice IF you want. 100/50 points isn't much so yeah you want to roll again, but you could stop and add that score to your total. - If you get three of a kind, it's 1000 points for three 1's, and then for 2-6 it's multiplied by 100 so 200 points for three 2's and 600 points for three 6's. Then, you can take the remaining dice and roll again while keeping the ones you selected to the side. - There is also strings of 5-6 dice. Either 1/2/3/4/5, or 2/3/4/5/6. Can't recall how much they're worth, but there's also 1-6 straight through. If you manage to use ALL your dice, all six, you can sum up the total of those points and either choose not to roll, or since rolling 6 die has a VERY high likelihood of providing at least one 1 or one 5 or three of a kind or a run or SOMETHING that would allow you to add some more points to the total, generally you roll all 6 if you get the opportunity. Doesn't happen often, but remember you can ALWAYS lose those points you're gambling. - If you roll, and there's no triples and no 1 or 5 and no 5-6 dice runs, meaning there's NO points to be had, you lose your turn AND any points you were gambling with and your opponent throws the dice next in the wooden cup. So, as Kenny Rogers says, "You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em." Take your points and choose not to throw, allow your opponent's turn to begin, and then your points are tallied to your total and from there you cannot lose them. You carry on the fight to be the first to 4000 points. Oh and if you get 4-6 of a kind, it seems to keep doubling. So three 2's is only 200, but four 2's in one roll is 400 and five 2's is 800 and six 2's is 1600 if I'm not mistaken. And of course with 6 of a kind (which I don't know if I've EVER rolled that before), you can then roll all six dice again to add to that 1600, or if you want to be cautious (even though with 6 dice handy, you'd be pretty safe to roll again for some more points) you can choose NOT to roll and your score of 1600 goes permanently to your total. But this also means that, yeah, in theory you could luck-out and win on your very first through. I guess with five 1's, if I'm not mistaken about the rules, it doubles it from 1000 with three 1's, to 2000 (the game half won) with four 1's, to 4000 (the game won in one roll) with 5 1's. Six 6's would also give an estimated 4800 points, which is another one-throw game ender, but again I can't recall ever actually witnessing such a thing. Pretty sure to see dice being thrown in a cup in the modern day, given the only other place I ever seen it besides 'Yahtzee' maybe is in that game Kingdom Come set in 1403 in the area of the modern day Czech Republic, where they recreate some ACTUAL historical sites in-game which can be visited in the real world, even if they've kinda fallen apart a bit and/or been paved-over or built-upon in the last 619 years.
This is a popular game with dirty kids and train hoppers, but it's usually called 10,000. Pretty much all the same rules, except one special roll, three separate pairs, called Boxcars, worth a thousand points. Very fond memories playing this drunk under bridges and in the woods. 5 or 6 people, stealing gets hectic

Live in Kenosha and can confirm all of this. Can recall several nights out getting absolutely trashed and paying no money thanks to bar dice. But yes, fair warning...you lose you are buying for everyone...but also fair warning you don't lose and you are drinking whatever the loser pays for. Could be rail gin, could be some foo foo skittles shot or could be a Jager. You have been warned...fun and rough times to be had.
Love the video, but I have one correction for you on Ship, Captain, Crew. After getting your 6,5,4, if you roll snake eyes (two 1’s) that beats all. It’s also known as “ Rolling Tits in # of rolls”. The best is “Tits in 1”. After 21 yrs in the military and sitting in airport hangers for up to 12 hrs sometimes or the military’s famous “hurry up and wait” mentality, you find ways to pass the time. Always had a deck of cards, 5 dice and a crown bag of quarters. You should do a follow up on Liars Dice. That game can get heated (especially if you’re a good liar (or a better cheater)). Personally skilled at both.
Easiest way to upset the regulars is go into a bar with your brother whose a regular and win the shake of the day. Easiest way to smooth things over, buy drinks for everyone with the money you just won.
We play a version of this called 7/11/21. You get three rolls, and only ones count. You keep count around the table till someone gets up to seven and they choose the shot, the person who reaches 11 pays for the shot and the person who reaches 21 takes the shot.
Love the sweater bro! I’m bringing this game to the bars I work at in west Texas. Miss living in the Midwest. You know, 4 months out of the year. 😜 great video!
the first game is similiar to one we play here in Canada, just called dice, Aces are 100, 5s are 50 and you want 3, 4 or 5 of a kind, five Aces is 1000 points.. you have to get 500 points to get 'on board' which means you get to start tallying your count n we can play to 10K or 20K depending on how many people and the time you have.. you get to keep rolling as long as you have an ace OR 5 or 3, 4, 5 of a kind n its up to you when you wanna stop.. get greedy and you can lose your the roll lol.. thanks for sharing your games with us.. appreciate it der guy.. much love from Canada eh, say Hi to your folks for me.. 😍
Awesome story when i was 12 or 13 i went the bar down the street with my family now this bar and its owner knew me and my family very well and me and my little 6 or 7 year old brother were allowed to stay late there bc we was well liked so of course i would get bored so id go out watch everyone play bags or tabs stuff like that and one day my dad had lost his normal buddy he played bags with he had gone home early so he called me up and we started to play so of course i bein young as i am thinking imma lose to the “pros” but we end up beating them 21 to 5 because my dad is a marine he would point at the hole with a beer in his hand and say “ ight son in the hole “ and i nailed it everytime we won a free bucket of beer and mini tacos and i did a shot of pepsi to round everything off later that night whilst im indulging in my mini tacos i see people playing dice so i run out ask my dad for a buck he gives it to me thinking imma go play an arcade game i buy my way into the dice game with people laughing thinking this is adorable 30 minutes later my dad comes in after hearing everyone in the bar laughing so loud sees a big group of people looks in sees me sitting at the corner of the bar shooting dice making money 5 minutes after that i leave the bar people patting me on the back but some people looking pissed my dad looks at me and goes “what did u do?” I look at him with the most smug smile on my face and said “i won” and then i take 73 dollars out of my pocket and ask to go to Walmart to this day im banned from playing dice at that bar..
My ultimate frisbee coach in college (in NY) was a Wisconsin native. Made rookie me play bar dice, didnt explain the rules. Told me if I lose I buy everyone a shot. With 0 dollars in my pocket I said sure, managed to win and got my free shots. Only 10 years later did I finally learn the rules lol
I love that you say "tree" instead of "three", my dad pronounces it the same way. I've lived in Minnesota all my life and even people from here tell me I have a strong Minnesotan accent, lol. However, I do say "three". 😁 Love your channel, It makes me nostalgic for my youth and all the adults with strong Minnesotan accents I grew up around.
Sounds fun. Might go up there to try it. Here in Texas I play this game called if you buy it you drink and and no beer is allowed to be left over when the sun comes up. If you don’t finish the beer you have to buy me beer the next Friday.
I live in the midwest, but in St. Louis, and instead of bar dice we have a whole different game; its a raffle style game that takes place over time and uses a deck of cards; I don't quite understand how it works, but I've seen people win huge amounts of money in the thousands before.
I would say it's a Midwest thing -we play in illinois, probably not in bars as much anymore cuz of video gambling but definitely when hangin out with friends n family
I'm from Minnesota but have been in WI for 20+ years and bar dice IS a thing! Everyone in WI has shake if the day! They always post the # to roll for, a buck a roll (5 dice of the same number, or yahtzee!)
Learned bar dice and ship, captain, crew at the bowling alley in Port when I was 7. The only way to get more Wisconsin is if we also played cribbage at the bar.
In Huntsville Alabama we play with 4 dice. You pay a dollar to roll and can only roll once per shift unless you get three of a kind and then you can pay another dollar to roll again. If you hit 4 of a kind you get the pot. I have seen the pot won at $10 and have seen it build up to $900. If someone hits a big pot they buy the house a round.
Played a whole lot of Ship, Cap'n, Crew in my day. There was another called Trinidad that had something to do with ones but I can't remember that one. Different "ones" game than Charlie's.
Play a variation maybe you've heard of. See where I go in South Milwaukee/Cudahy, the game is about playing until the first player has to leave the bar to either visit the bathroom, or go home. To earn your 3 rolls you have to drink a tapper beer. So you get 3 rolls, and the dice are passed around until someone has to leave. If the player that leaves is the one with the highest to that point, they forfeit and the next highest to that point wins. The winner gets their next drink paid for my the losers. This can get pretty funny as the dice get passed and passed with guys holding it as long as they can. I also have see more than a couple of late night accidents this way which depending on the bartender can get you booted.
There's as many variations of bar dice as shot choices in a bar. I haven't seen these, but I'm old. And I haven't been back to Sheboygan County in years. ;-)
10am up where I lived bars would already be full. Just moved an hour away and not even close to as many bars as the city I was in and this city is over twice the size as the one I moved from (all in Wisconsin)

Could be rail gin, could be some foo foo skittles shot or could be a Jager. You have been warned...fun and rough times to be had.
It was definitely the best bar dice tutorial of my life because having never been to the Midwest, I didn't know bar dice was a thing.
I can't think of a funnier man. He has gotten me through many a stomach ache. Keep er' moving.
This was the most realistic video he has made yet. To a tee with what happens back home at the bars. Love it!
Personally skilled at both.
liars dice is a lot of fun
I've always enjoyed 7, 14, 21 as a good social bar dice game too.
SCC or simply 6-5-4 was a staple at my parent's bar in Minnesota. Some big pots. Loved the one-tie/all-tie rule. Double, triple pots! Good times!
It's two-tie/all tie. One cannot tie themselves!! 😎
Right! 6-5-4!
@@nutzpwnz you're taking it too literally - if one ties with you, you all tie in the game.
@@lyleorr9832 it's one of the greatest barguments of all time!! I also said it as a joke with the 😎 emoji
Love the vids dude keep it up
Thank you for this informative video.
Easiest way to upset the regulars is go into a bar with your brother whose a regular and win the shake of the day. Easiest way to smooth things over, buy drinks for everyone with the money you just won.
that's the protocol. you win, you buy a round.
Thank you Charlie I can't wait to get back up to Eau Claire
We play a version of this called 7/11/21. You get three rolls, and only ones count. You keep count around the table till someone gets up to seven and they choose the shot, the person who reaches 11 pays for the shot and the person who reaches 21 takes the shot.
14, not 11
sounds a lil like Craps? Street craps or casino craps
Catching up to You Betcha, the race to 500K is tight. It's like Fleet Farm up around here...🧐🎭🧀
fleet farm is for the gays up north, its ok we dont judge here in Janesville
@@gregoryeverson741
Janesville is close to Beloit, which many call the "butthole of Wisconsin"...
@@WaysideWade Beloit is the butthole, Janesville was nice until we got the Illinois scum
Yoopers just skip da dice and go straight for da Oly Pops! (Thanks for refreshing the rules Charlie, it's been ages since I've played)
This troll would like to know what Oly Pops are, please.
@@kynn23 Olympia Beer. :) The drink of choice when I was growing up. Probably cuz it was so easy to get. And it was fun saying OlyPop!
@@kenbrown5449 Thank you!
That sounds like a really neat game. I might have to come up north and try it out.
wear your drinkin boots
SCHLITZ!!! My first drunk was on Schlitz as a kid in the 60's and I still drink it wherever I find it!
What a good way how to get to know people I wish we had this in Scotland
Variations on Liar's dice are fun. Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest really simplified the original.
Never heard of this but sounds fun.
Play this every time I'm in a bar, especially up north in da home town. Cheers
I learned Ship Captain Crew as a kid…in a Wisconsin bar…after deer hunting. Good times. 👍
Don't forget the batry (battery)!
As a bogan Australian i feel a sense of familiarity with this Midwest lifestyle
Northern exposure is a classy place! 🤣
I never heard of this but it sound great
7-14-21 is a dangerously fun game too.
I have my bar dice and cup from when I lived in Denmark and fell in love with the game then :)
Denmark in europe or Denmark, WI?
Never heard it called ship captain crew, always just called it 6, 5, 4. Barron County area
Love it..put away your midwest nice when playing dice 🎲 🎲
I live in MD, been west a few times, never seen bar dice. Looks cool.
Sounds fun. Might go up there to try it. Here in Texas I play this game called if you buy it you drink and and no beer is allowed to be left over when the sun comes up. If you don’t finish the beer you have to buy me beer the next Friday.
As a Sconnie, I never encountered this until I moved outta Dane. Now I have a resource to know how to play it if I ever choose to.
Oh yes...I recognize Camp's Bar in Milwaukee anywhere! Been there a few times!
Camp Bar? Love it!
A responsible adult -- or your dad. 🤣🤣🤣
Which is better: bar dice or ship, captain crew? I can't decide, its a horse a piece.
Minnesotan here and I say ship, captain crew
i can play bar dice all day, but im usually good in 2
I live in the midwest, but in St. Louis, and instead of bar dice we have a whole different game; its a raffle style game that takes place over time and uses a deck of cards; I don't quite understand how it works, but I've seen people win huge amounts of money in the thousands before.
Queen of hearts I think. A bar in my town does it and I’ve seen $1000 pots.
Capture the Ace
I’m here for the SCHLITZ 👍❤️
In Southern Wisconsin we always called it, 654. 🙂
Is Bar Dice as Wisconsin tradition? We don't have anything like this in UK Pubs
Well get to it then. :)
You betcha
I would say it's a Midwest thing -we play in illinois, probably not in bars as much anymore cuz of video gambling but definitely when hangin out with friends n family
I'm from Minnesota but have been in WI for 20+ years and bar dice IS a thing! Everyone in WI has shake if the day! They always post the # to roll for, a buck a roll (5 dice of the same number, or yahtzee!)
You’re really good-very funny. Love your channel.
Learned bar dice and ship, captain, crew at the bowling alley in Port when I was 7. The only way to get more Wisconsin is if we also played cribbage at the bar.
Nice. Hello from Kenosha. Tell your folks I says hi.
nice ! Tipping back a schlitz! We are in Wisconsin! And oh watch for deer, Ya seriously rut is close
I have no more knowledge than when I started the video, but I enjoyed myself.
Thanks for telling us about bar dice!
Love da dice, looks like they have been well loved.
Portable coaster! Yes! Mine is a mini tarp for when I paint 😬
I'm from the bootheel of Missouri and this is still so iconic to me
Just another reason the get comfortable on a bar stool! Wish 25 cent beers would come back, those were the days...
Played a whole lot of Ship, Cap'n, Crew in my day. There was another called Trinidad that had something to do with ones but I can't remember that one. Different "ones" game than Charlie's.
We always just called it 6-5-4. Never heard it called captain crew name, uffda i learned something new
Play a variation maybe you've heard of.
Iowa out lawed our "Shake/Roll of the day" about 20ish years ago when all the gambling boats and casinos opened. Billionaires don't like competition.
Great Grandma on my dads side taught me these games when I was 7. Northern Michigan, eh.
I didn’t understand the scoring of any of those games but I still want to play! 🤣
I'm completely baffled by the math of the first game, the other two made sense.
There's as many variations of bar dice as shot choices in a bar. I haven't seen these, but I'm old.
And I haven't been back to Sheboygan County in years. ;-)
Atta boy! Teach em real good, yeah? I brought up bar dice outside of Wisconsin.......crickets, my guy. Gotta teach the world.
This makes me wonder if meat raffles at bars are a weirdly midwest thing too lol
meat raffle is the church fund raiser. you go to the bar after the meat raffle and play bar dice till you swear to god youll never play bar dice again
Meat raffles happen at The American Legion in Illinois. 🤷♀️
I learned ship, captain, crew because of this channel.
Camp bar is awesome.
10am up where I lived bars would already be full. Just moved an hour away and not even close to as many bars as the city I was in and this city is over twice the size as the one I moved from (all in Wisconsin)
I asked to play bar dice the first day I moved to boston and they almost called the cops
Thank you for making this making. Non-Wisconsinites will know how to play bar dice now :)
Oh man that sweater is everything. Go Packers!
and f da bears. i can even go with just f da bears. go packers is a given
