I’ve had 3 Subaru’s and currently have an ‘03 Outback LLBean Edition. It is a wonderful car. Subaru’s, as a rule are just beginning to get broken in at around 75K miles and mine currently has 107K original miles. I live in “snow country” in Oregon so the AWD is a blessing but truly prefer 4x4. Car dealers and manufacturers always say that the AWD system just senses when the tires begin to slip and then automatically engage the AWD but I have been driving 4x4 since 1966 ...I can tell when I’m turning into a parking spot in August and all four tires are gripping the pavement, hey! I’m in AWD! It really sucks the gas consumption. I love my car, please don’t misunderstand me. It’s a shame car manufacturers believe the public is too stupid to know how to turn the hubs and put their autos into 4x4 any longer. I’m a grandmother of 10 and closing in on 70...if I can do it...anybody can...just sayin’. Thanks for letting me vent. Loved your video. Victoria Greenroyd
Aint no way in hell im spending $30k+ on a vehicle and getting out in the snow and mud to engage my 4x4. Then tracking all that mess in my car unnecessarily?? Hell nah On the fly can also help prevent you from getting stuck in the first place
Just picked up a 2019 Subie 3.6R!!! I wanted to do this five years ago but chickened out. I'm so glad I waited and could afford the model I really wanted. Six weeks in and I still LOVE this vehicle!
I just drove mine home from the dealership with every single option they offer on Saturday.. except the V6 which is not necessary. I love this car, it is my second Black and Tan Outback Limited, and I look forward to being an Outback guy for a very long time. I put 160,000 miles on the other Outback and you’d never know. Very high quality. It truly is a sporty, luxurious vehicle that has more options (Eyesight) than any vehicle that I am aware of.. even more than my father’s new ultra-luxury Mercedes S class. If you’re not sure yet if Outbacks are for you, go drive one! There truly is nothing not to like! Trust me! Oh, and my mother has a 2018 too hers is black on black! And, it’s rated as literally the safest car on the road. Hope any of this helps those still on the fence! Great video too, btw.. I appreciate the review.
@@maximillianroemer7343 I’m commenting 6 years later on your post. It appears that nobody said there is no such thing as a V6 in the Outback! (It’s a flat 6) ☺️
Have a 2.5i Premium myself, and basically got it because of this video. I did lots of research too but still this sold me for a family car. The ride quality is hands down the best I've ever had in any car.
5:16 for some reason everyone seems to get this wrong. That button on the right is "hill hold", not hill descent. Hill descent is always active whenever you engage x-mode (the button on the left.) "Hill hold" is different. It engages the parking brake when the car detects that you come to a stop in a hill in order to prevent the car from rolling backwards. You can stop on a hill and release the brake pedal if you want. Hit the gas and the brake automatically disengage and away you go. I actually don't find it that useful. X-mode/hill descent, on the other hand is kind of awesome.
I have a 2007 Outback with 42,000 miles on it. It is still perfect, my husband offered me a new car, I got kind of excited.... For a few minutes. My old dependable Outback is still perfect. 👍💓👏.
Just picked my 2019 up last week. I kinda wish I could’ve waited for the 2020 but, my 2009 Legacy was ready to move on after 185k. By moving on I mean passing down to my buddy who polished it up and brought it back to its former glory.
I feel like this is one vehicle where the manufacturer is listening to feedback from the owners. The things that don’t seem like a big deal when purchasing a vehicle, often can be a big annoyance, read about on the forums. Subaru has addressed these issues each year since 2015. It would be nice to have a bit more bolstering and 8-way power passenger seats. Other than that, this car paired with the 3.6R is a recipe for success.
great review - was getting tired of seeing all the other ones that are the same thing over and over.. well done and thanks :) for providing some fun to it as well
I think this is my favorite generation of Outback! It looks well sculpted and I love the new grill. I think the 2015-2018 models are kinda awkward looking because of that grill design. The 2010-2014 just look too frumpy. The other generations don't really look that great except for the 90s Outback.
Subaru always say that it is cars are quieter with every new refresh/update. Is it actual class leading quietness or just class average? My prior experience with Subaru has been extremely noisy interiors.
Have a 2017 model. Only thing that I do NOT like: very little power assist in the steering makes it very fatiguing to drive. My wrists and arms ache on longer drives just having to exert so much force in even small steering wheel adjustments. Other than that, nearly my "ideal" vehicle. Just be aware of this when doing a test drive. Supposedly, Subaru has fiddled with the steering on the '18 model. Not sure whether it is easier to steer or not. ???
We took a 2k mile road trip in one of these. The outback was excellent on road, with up to 32 mpg, and very capable off road when we needed it. A road-trip worthy machine!
Love this car, but buyers should note the passenger seat is not height adjustable, even on top line Touring trims. It's just powered fore and aft. If your passenger is tall, they're going to find themselves sitting up way high.
I’ve had a 50k F150 and a 50k Ram 1500 that both have the same issue. Though I wouldn’t say it’s too much of an issue, because I’m tall and it’s not too bad for me to sit in the passenger seat.
I'm 6'4" and the passenger seat of our new 2018 Outback 2.5i Premium has plenty of head room and leg room. With the front seats all the way back, I can still sit in the back.
Bought a limited in January and love the car. Was so torn on the 2.5 as we do go through the mountains off and on but while it feels weak compared to my GTI its really not. The CVT just changes how the power feels. Instead of a push into the seat it just keeps going. I have been able to feather close to 40 MPG at 75 MPH on the highway and 30 to 33 in the city. Its my Wifes car so I dont get to test it out much but our first road trip is a few months away so we'll see how it averages out with hills and altitude changes. Not to worried about weight impact up to about 6k feet, 4 adults and a toddler in it was no big deal in DFW. Good review, though some of the goofiness was out of place and forced, other bits were more natural.
I bought the Touring in the 2.5L here in B.C. and it works fine too, I"ve had a Subaru LE from 87 till 97 and besides the timing belt change and brakes it was well worth the cash paid.
I just bought a premium 2.5 a week ago and the power is fine. The CVT is programmed for fuel economy but if you push the pedal down there's power there if you need it. Loving it so far after moving on from my 17 year old Forester.
Lol quite the upgrade! I just did a 2000 mile trip in mine from Dallas through Santa Fe to Denver over to Salina and down to Dallas again. The power is there, but the delivery through the CVT to the AWD system is the main difference. Its not about pushing you into your seat its just steady consistent (key word there) power. It is not the fastest off the line but the CVT is not trying to be. So yeah getting up to speed in a short highway on-ramp is a little lack luster but once you are going it has zero issues even with passing. That is not to say it doesnt go, its a very different type of power delivery than a normal car with gears. Manual control was great for holding revs and speed for going up and engine breaking on the down. I missed the punch of my GTI but it was a great road trip and after 18 hours I could get out of the Outback vs groan out of my GTI (not a great long road trip car for tall people lol). Even with all of the stuff we normally take the car did fine. Wind and weather played against our fuel efficiency but 28 to 29 MPG at an average of 80 MPH is great. If we had not been fighting such head winds both directions we could have easily pushed over 30. Great car and very happy with the purchase. Now if they could rework the front so its not such a bug magnet lol!
Traded in my Forester for an Outback yesterday! Couldn't be happier with the materials and infotainment system. So far Apple CarPlay has worked flawlessly!
I purchased my Outback in January. My 3rd. The issues with Apple car play crop up when you have your phone connected via Bluetooth as well as plugged in for Apple Carplay. So just avoid connecting via Bluetooth and it will remain fine.
I really wish you all would add some reliability comments to you reviews. Subaru engines have had reports of burning oil and issues once they get some miles on them. Not speaking of the well know WRX and STI issues but Outbacks and Foresters.
SS S the key word here is had problems. Not anymore. Problem was solved the moment they started just in case you were living under a rock. Subaru took care of every customer with this issue and even extended the warranty for everyone who bought one of their cars during the affected years.
And that may well be the case in this instance but it's something a buyer would like to be aware of. In regards to ringland failure in STI's and spun bearings in WRX's Subaru has said nothing unlike Ford for the RS. You will see reviewers mention reliability when speaking of FCA or Jaguar/LR products but it would be nice to touch on any reliability issues a particular model has had or does have.
The 3.6R is least likely prone to the head gasket issues. Oil issues are difficult to master. I have a 08 and I just have to keep an eye on the level, using semi-synthetic seems to help.
Luis Martinez That's because the customer sued Subaru into reimbursing for these nunk5, oil burning engines. We don't have our 2012 Forester but would be happy to fax a copy of the letter to owners.
Can the "fake gear changes" be disabled? Do these fake gears changes do more unnecessary harm and wear to the CVT? Thanks. I wish I could turn backup camera on manually if I shift in neutral and start moving backward, I'm sure sensors tells the cars it is moving backward yet backup camera cannot be used, not even manually, bummer. Why the limitation?
I hope they made the brakes less spongy. I wish Subaru offered a sport trim option with a firmer suspension, beefier brakes and a little more power. I have an 16 Prem with a 2.5i and I feel the power is barely adequate. Should have tested the 3.6.
It is my hope that Subaru will make a Sports Touring Edition of the Outback with a Turbo charged 4 cylinder engine. The same 2.4 litre Turbo that is now going in the new Ascent SUV. Subaru certainly takes its time in making sensible changes to it's vehicles.
Anyone know how to disable the E mail operation. Yesterday we received about 30 e mails. Disabling them does not pr3v3nt new ones. Please help. Unable to find any instructions in the owners manuals, HELP, JoeB
ALERT. The 2018 Outback has a major safety problem. If the fuel Gage indicates 1/4 to 1/2 full, YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF GAS, and they have not found out how to fix the problem. Make sure you always have 1/2 to full in the gas tank.
@satuple I just was notified the dealers now can fix it under a safety recall. Yes, the gas gauge/calculation is defective on mine. I pushed the limits recently on mine. The gas warning came on with indicated 90 miles to empty. In about 8 or 9 more miles I filled it, showing 80 miles to empty. The 18.5 gallon tank took 17.3 gallons without trying to add any extra. Definitely would not have traveled 80 more miles! I actually realized early on there was an issue, but long before the warning sent by Subaru, I was filling normally by about 120 miles to empty or sooner with mine. It will be nice to get the fix, but now after learning it through over 13,000 miles, I'll have to get comfortable with the fix.
Um Micha when can we see a review of products from fca other than the really brand new platforms, we haven’t seen a review for the grand Cherokee or durango since their mid cycle refreshes in 2014, to think about the only LX platform vehicle i saw was a challenger AWD, I’ve seen some american cars but barely any from FCA, why?
Better choice is Regal TourX 2.0T with Active Twin Clutch AWD with no buttons to push for X-mode like traction. The TourX starts at $29,999 before typical Buick discounting and offers more power and torque than Outback 3.6R while getting better highway fuel economy. Plus it is more luxurious with a longer warranty than Suabru.
CVT engine sucks .. warranty service is worst.. electric wiring gets burnt up anytime while driving and dealer said : “Manufacturing defect :) “ Only pros : AWD with this price is unmatched among its all competitors. If you are only thinking about AWD with cheaper price compromising rest all feature then Subaru is the choice . As I have outback 3.6 R , 2018, I experienced above things in 30K miles on it. I did not explore its cons before I purchase and I can’t repent for my sins :)
Waiting for them to put that new Turbo 4 in place of the 6 cylinder for better fuel efficiency. They need a refresh of their engine lineup; were it not for the lack of efficient engines, Id be more inclined to trading in for this sooner.
Man !!! Subaru's and their headlights issues !!! a lot of them on the road with driver side headlight are out a friend of mine had one and that headlight is a headache. even the dealer can't figure it out !!
it's not just the driver side headlight it's all exterior lights. I see more Subaru's than not with plate lights, tail lights, head lights you name it blown out. I Don't understand it but it's something they need to get to the bottom of.
Had this problem recently. Really wouldn’t care if the bulbs weren’t ass to get to. On my 2010 legacy my options are removing the front bumper or going in through the wheel well.
JakeDrives if it's a bulb issue it's not Subarus problem. Fuck people can be so stupid sometimes. The bulbs going out has nothing to do with Subaru. The manufacturer of the bulb is the problem. Is this all you have to complain about. Dam I would be worried if it had other problems in the drivetrain but we are complaining about a dam bulb going out.
most modern cars are like that i don't know what is happening to the engineers who design them cars i just bought 2007 Toyota Camry XLE fully loaded V6 last year. and i was searching for almost a year with unpredictable jobs situations i choose this car as the most affordable and reliable. but Subaru was in my list and Chevy Malibu as well I avoided Subaru made up my mind not buying one just because of this problem the lights problem .. didn't know they were hassle to replace them !! the same go for the Chevy Malibu as well and thats why I avoided this one too.. as for the Camry is only for the whole unit replacement is a hassle tail light or front head light but for the bulbs they are just easy .. i still think car designers and engineers are getting more stupid making things difficult against the consumer like that is just not a good plan !!
Drop the V6, redo the engine bay to only cater to Turbo 4's (weight savings). Offer two Turbo 4's. The top end Turbo 4 being offered in the Limited & Touring trims.
I’ll agree that a simpler, more powerful four would be nice, but I would imagine that in 2020, the Outback will migrate to the new platform and share the Accent engine. The H6 may be “underpowered” but it is the only true balanced engine, and it doesn’t seem to have the head gasket failure that the H4s have. The problem with DOHC engines are the added weight at the top of the motor, which is fine for cars with a lower center of gravity, but for this vehicle, an engine with a low COG is sort of negated. Personally, I’d like to see Honda’s 2.0T in this vehicle.
criznitty I wonder if a 4 cylinder is actually simpler if it has a turbocharger, an intercooler and whatever else. And would it be less reliable in long run? I’d buy the 6.
I just got a 2001 outback with 90k miles. I might get this year's model when mine dies in another 17 years.
GL with those cylinder head base gaskets....keep an eye on oil leaks and loss of compression/ coolant.
Don't forget about the low coolant level from your once a decade head gasket changing.
@Curtis Harlem definitely, been watching on Instaflixxer for since december myself :D

Except Micah is OG. No offense to TheStraightPipes, love those guys too.
Micah is funny as an individual and Straight Pipes are good as a duo.
Were those Pride Rainbows coming out of the vents???
It is my hope that Subaru will make a Sports Touring Edition of the Outback with a Turbo charged 4 cylinder engine. The same 2.4 litre Turbo that is now going in the new Ascent SUV. Subaru certainly takes its time in making sensible changes to it's vehicles.

Thinking about trading 16 Forester premium w eyesight for 17 outback limited, any thoughts
Ruggedositude is my new favorite word.
Does eyesight 2018 improve? 0mph? Stop & go?
I wonder if the '19 Outbacks still have the touchy off-the-line throttle issue that they've had over the past several years....
Why only 720p? I suggest upping production
This was a good one guys!
Thanks, Jeff!
Which trim level is this Micah?
CVT engine sucks .. warranty service is worst.. electric wiring gets burnt up anytime while driving and dealer said :
“Manufacturing defect :) “
Only pros : AWD with this price is unmatched among its all competitors.
If you are only thinking about AWD with cheaper price compromising rest all feature then Subaru is the choice .
As I have outback 3.6 R , 2018, I experienced above things in 30K miles on it.
I did not explore its cons before I purchase and I can’t repent for my sins :)
I don’t like/need awd, but I like Subaru’s, they’re like 90’s cars where visibility is great. New cars from other brands have horrible visibility.
Waiting for them to put that new Turbo 4 in place of the 6 cylinder for better fuel efficiency. They need a refresh of their engine lineup; were it not for the lack of efficient engines, Id be more inclined to trading in for this sooner.
Does Subaru offer LED rear lights?
Vanessa Oelmann you can get them installed aftermarket.
Luis Martinez ok that’s weird, why do they offer LED headlights but no LED rear lights???
do a review of the new 2018 buick enclave
Carlos Garcia Or the Regal TourX which is all around better car than the OB.
An EV version of this would be a dream come true.
I'd say plug-in hybrid. Long distance travel with no established network of charging stations is impossible.
I love Subaru’s
I bought a 2016 Outback Prem. model when new. Not totally in love yet.....

Bextar636 They are cheap cars and very utilitarian.
This is a station wagon. Some people think it's an SUV, but it's actually just a taller wagon.
Watched both reviews on Subaru Outback and Honda CR-V touring...Which did you prefer?? Does anyone cross shop these two vehicles??

Or the windshields are cracked.
Great review
Thanks, Ryan!
Do 2018 Honda cord review please
Already done! Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/KDMuK_9KtaE/видео.html
Damn that Odyssey(?) had to bite the dust for the sparkles!
Drop the V6, redo the engine bay to only cater to Turbo 4's (weight savings). Offer two Turbo 4's. The top end Turbo 4 being offered in the Limited & Touring trims.
Ivan Vojt at least make the H6 more powerful. 250~ hp out of a 3.6 liter 6 cylinder is pretty bad in 2018.
Ivan Vojt
There is no V6. It’s a flat 6.
Personally, I’d like to see Honda’s 2.0T in this vehicle.
criznitty
I wonder if a 4 cylinder is actually simpler if it has a turbocharger, an intercooler and whatever else. And would it be less reliable in long run? I’d buy the 6.
Ivan Vojt They should use the h4 turbo that they're using in the Subaru ascent. That would be really nice.
Bland hatchback that I see every soccer mom on the block driving.
@Mr. Cairo There's a hatch and it's on the back? So technically hatchback?
Review the Buick Regal tourx?
We've got a sneak peek of it here: ruclips.net/video/qhVhj4Q3NrA/видео.html
TourX runs rings around OB in everyday driving.
I love my 2018 outback
Dig the lively video!
They should do an update where they put the steering wheel on the right side of the car! 😜😂😂🇦🇺👍
