You have now discovered my three favorite Japanese rock/metal bands (not just all-female bands) with Band-Maid, Lovebites and Nemophila. In 2019, Mayu, the singer, was wanting to experiment with singing various styles of music, especially metal. Her band had broken up and I don't think she screamed at all in that band. Her friend, bassist Haraguchi-san, was willing to help but they needed others. Mayu approached Saki, a very well established and respected guitarist (she was on stage left in the video), for help. Saki was the well known guitarist of Mary's Blood and was known for helping out young talent. Saki agreed and also brought in the other lead guitarist, Hazuki, and a very in demand session drummer named Tamu Murata. These latter three are why Nemophila are sometimes referred to as a Supergroup. It didn't take long for them to recognize the chemistry and decide to remain a band. The presence of Hazuki, Tamu and, especially, Saki gave them instant credibility. Of course now their music speaks for itself. Because they are so new, and because of covid, most of their music has been written by others or are covers. Their cover of Iron Maiden's Aces High was my introduction to the band. Mayu sings the hell out of that song. I think she has one of the best pure female rock/metal voices in the world right now.
My suggestions for the next songs would be their live performance of the song Oiran and that amazing cover of Iron Maiden's Aces High.

My introduction to Nemophila was their cover of Babymetal's Megitsune. It is flipping amazing - Mayu sang the clean and the pig screams. They also had twin tails and their Babymetal merch in the studio! 😊

Nemophila is a band formed in 2019, but actually each of their members is from a different band, And they are diverse, they not limited to one style of music, you can hear different things in every song of them.🤘🏻🌸🤘🏻

Ne Moe fee la, is a blue flower native to California & Adabana is a flower that has not bloomed or a metaphor for not reaching full potential. Nemophila became a band in 2019 & all their original music is killer !! 😎👌P.S. Check them out live with the song, " Oiran " at Neon Yeon 2021.

Yes, "Adabana means a flower (such as a cherry blossom) that does not bring fruit, so not fulfilling one's potential.
But I found another connection from current Japanese society:
It is also the name of a fairly recent "Manga" anime story and game in which the lead characters are a girl who has lost her memory and a boy who knows her by name living in fairytale-like stories (the "Land of Adabana") that have become damaged, and restoring and reworking them as they go, by recovering words, neutralizing destructive creatures, and repainting the pictures.
      The implications I see are:
What if the story of your life is one you wish was more fruitful?
What if you had the power to fix the story?
      What if you do?

Why isn’t this happening here in the USA? Because mastering a musical instrument and forming a tight band is hard work.
All there songs are different, and they’re all good. Try DISSENTION, MONSTERS, REVIVE, and LIFE.

What Ric Dale said. I would add:
      1. Corporation laws in the US changed to squeeze corporate assets in favor of stockholder dividends. That fueled a music company shift away from original, less predictable artists toward less expensive entertainers.
      2. That in turn pushed autotune on almost EVERYTHING. Rock is largely based on blues. Blues involves bending notes, both on guitars and voice. Autotune kills that. Rap doesn't have that issue.
      3. Radio was issued an FCC mandate to submit their playlists well before airtime. That destroyed DJ independence and creativity. No longer could they get an indie record, listen once and try it on air.
So now you have Clear Channel garbage talk and corporate playlists, and original rock and metal is effectively suppressed.

you found another fantastic band. I liked, that you were vibing to the drums, because their drummer tamu murata is world class (and mother of two daughters). the others; mayu vocals, saki (chucky) and hazuki guitars and haraguchi-san on bass are superawesome too. the nemophila rabbit hole is deep and rewarding too. I would recommend as next the song "life" (live streaming version). it was written for tamus return after maternity break. it´s very emotional and the favourite of many nemophila fans. and it shows the bands spirit. they are currently in LA. playing at the whisky-a-gogo on july 1st. they really are exited about that.

Enjoying your head-first dive into the wonderful world of 21st century Japanese all female Metal and Rock! Everything these ladies do is excellent - love the 'Revive' MV but they can do this all live too. Such a high level of musicianship, always, from all band members (particularly that off-beat drum breakdown at 5:25). You might enjoy (who am I kidding, you'll love them!) The Wagakki Band, who mix traditional instruments with modern - see their amazing live performance of 'Homura' and 'Akatsuki No Ito' ruclips.net/video/ponTbDDMYjw/видео.html for example - or three guys who have released 21 albums in their 30 year Metal career, Ningen Isu - try their 'Heartless Scat ruclips.net/video/CbI79e5iZKs/видео.html .

If you want to know what really makes them special try Life. It’s an emotional song dedicated to the drummers return from maternity leave.
Japanese metal and rock is currently the best in the world and the rabbit hole is deep and wide. The bands you’ve tried are all phenomenal. Another good one is Trident and their song Spoopy.

Elite artist, each one,. The only mistake a person can make about Nemophila, is trying to define their Genre..They just do whatever they want to do, are excellent at it, and they have so much fun, it's fun to listen and watch them.. Mayu(vocals) doesn't speak English, but gets a lot of help from Saki ( the amazing guitarist on the right).. the song Life would be a good one next..it welcomes that great Drummer (Tamu) back from having a baby, and not knowing if she'd be able to rejoin the band. (emotional, with lyrics) Oiran is also a great song. Monsters, Revive, Rollin Rollin..Some of their songs are during studio rehearsals, or each seperately recorded because of covid restrictions, quite a list in a short amount of time..plus lots of covers of classic rock bands, metal bands, etc.. Lovebites, Nemophila, and Band Maid..I like to say, Lovebites is my favorite, but All three are, because they're so unique in their own way..

To have a complete picture of this highly talented band, you could restart from Monsters, and then continue with these ones: Blooming, Raitei, Dissension, Revive, Hypnosis, Demon Light, Ray of Light. They also did some great covers of classic hard-rock songs from the 80's (Iron Maiden, Kiss, Motley Cüe, AC/DC, Linkin Park, and some others) and the funny one Minion Banana song.
To widen your horizon in the territory of Japan all-female bands, you could also try these ones:
    - Gacharic Spin: Mindset, I wish I (EPIC), Tamashii Live (not completely in the metal genre but intense and really good)
    - Bridear: Brave New World Revisited (EPIC), Ghoul, Bloody Bride, Light in the Dark
    - Hagane: SuperVillan (EPIC), WintrySky, Labradorite
    - Wagama Rakia: Survive (EPIC)
    Enjoy! 🤘

They are a bit of a supergroup in the way they formed. Singer Mayu wanted to do a project. Bassist Haraguchi San, helped her. Guitarist Saki ( on the right of screen, alone) came in , and she wanted the chance to work with drummer Murata Tamu. Saki also brought in guitarist Hazuki ( over on left with bassist). This was in sept 2019. They did the one man show. Enjoyed working together, so formed Nemophila. They did a few small shows in Jan, Feb 2020, wrote the song Oiran, covered Maidens song the Trooper on YT. And worked through YT, releasing singles, EPS, playing virtual live shows , all while under pandemic restrictions. Try their songs: Hypnosis, Raitei, Revive, Life ( very emotional song)beautiful song.

Great reaction to the Japanese bands. That’s all I listen to in my rabbit hole.😂 Everyone lets their eye do the trick of letting that extra “I” at the end so don’t worry. Because it’s the scientific name for a blue and white flower it’s Neh- ma- filla. Despite being a Nth American native it’s famous in Japan at the Hitachi Seaside park where there are fields of it. Mayu named the band after the flower with the five petals representing each member. Originally the band was going to be called Sorai but they wrote a song with that name instead. They don’t have a bad song. You could do their first music video called RAITEI. They are elite musicians and better people so enjoy the ride.💙🤘🎸🇯🇵

Hi CA! You asked a question and got lots of answers. I got sucked into the Japanese Music scene following drummer Senri Kawaguchi in 2006, when she was a child protegee. In 2017, Senri was doing drum clinics with Tamu Murata, so I started following Tamu. Tamu was doing the Mayu Sessions in the third quarter of 2019. Those sessions formed into the band Nemophila. Nemophila is a 5 petaled flower to indicate that they were all equal. What can I tell you, one path leads to another! Over the past few years, I've contacted many of these wonderful commenters, who have broadened my background in Japanese Music. I'm a drummer so I tend to follow other drummers. One of the commenters on this page talked about Aldious. Their drummer is Marina Bozzio, drummer Terry Bozzio's daughter. She has been playing drums since she was an infant. Tamu Murata started playing drums in High School. On RUclips, there is a video entitled "Nemophila's Second Drummer" where Tamu Murata's two year old daughter is sitting on Tamu's lap, banging away with drumsticks on a Roland Electronic Drum Kit. Nemophila is the core of the new evolution in Music. So, check out everything on their RUclips site! Every now and then, we need a kick in the pants to get going in the right direction. Right now, we need a really BIG kick in the pants!

One of the reasons this is happening in Japan is that music and the arts are better funded and are taken more seriously. They get started much younger and those who show an aptitude are given a better chance to develop their skills. Two examples to check out are Yoyoka Soma who by the age of 9 was being sponsored by Pearl Drums and was ranked in the top 500 drummers in the world, (start watching at age 8 and watch her skills develop). ruclips.net/video/Tkw57uGnSrs/видео.html And an instrumental band called Asterism, who met at band camp when I believe they were 13 and went on to play at the SXSW festival a few years later. ruclips.net/video/8galql51xfA/видео.html

Haha, I am sure you have been well schooled in the pronunciation of the band's name by now, so I won't go there.
However, I will pick up on your thoughts of "what is going on" over in Japan with these female artists and metal/rock music. The scene is bursting at the seams with so much female talent. Babymetal, Lovebites and Band-Maid have set the scene, but bands like Nemophila have been working away for years to become overnight successes.
There is also a really strong Rock/Jazz/Pop/Dance/Funk and of course JPop scene in Japan. Check out groups like: @onefive, Atarashii Gakko, Glim Spanky, Passcode and Polkadot Stingray. They are not at the same level as the bigger bands production-wise, but have talent in spades. Some are even pretty weird by western standards, but I guarantee you won't forget them in a hurry.
No matter which band you choose, if you are looking to expand your understanding of the Japanese music scene (which I believe, is the second largest music market in the world), any of the above bands are worth a look.
I really hope you continue your dive into Japanese bands, there is so much great music coming out of there.

This is the result of compulsory music education in primary school in Japan, where they have to master 2 instruments. When they move to high school, the boys tend to go to sports, and the girls continue in club bands, marching or rock, for example. Tamu Murata (drums) is mom of 2 little ones, and a rocker. Great rxn, Sir and your Mom will be pleasantly surprised that both their band name and the name of the track are names of flowers, Po!

Ok I discover your channel because of NEMOPHILA (following them since about 2 years now, due to their Iron Maiden cover, being a Maiden fan)
But let me start with YOU.
Even before I started to continue your reaction, I went to check your band on Spotify, because yeah, I'm a Hard Rock / punk guy first, but country, since I discovered that with Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson, is also part of music I like (but hey I'm from Switzerland so yeah not really the regional stuff here 🤣)
And let me tell you pretty plainly, I listened partially to 2 songs (as of now) from your 2020 LP (life as we live it) and I have to say I'm not a fan of the mixing used on it, BUT I like your music, I like the voice, and your texts seems fun to listen to. So yeah you have at least one more sub there, and I wil definitely check you out guys. You sound like in my alley. 💖
Now back to the Japanese scene 6:50 why it's not happening as much anywhere else ? simply cultural differences. In Japan you either get VERY (at the least) good at something, or you stop doing it. All they do is 100% whatever the "art" is, should it be traditional japanese art like Ikebana (flowers arrangements), any of the manual traditional works (sword smithing, Traditional pottery, etc.) In the rest of the world, we are just happy if we don't fail, and reach "average". In Japan, it's not good enough.
You will ofc have many of the traditional "metal all female Japanes bands" recomandations coming in now, so I'll let that to the others, specially since I'm not into Lovebites, Band Maid, etc.
To me, one band that is totally amazing (not all female, but 2 very key females in the band) where you will see again that full talent at FULL display (all band's positions) is Unlucky Morpheous.
That band is insane, but the easiest song to get into them is probablly "M" Anthem ruclips.net/video/WoUzaVI0paY/видео.html
In a totally different style, you have that very fun VTuber rap godess that is Mori Calliope. That wil definitely catch you off guard. I'm absolutely not into rap, and yet, she managed to get me into her music with her lyrics flow, her personality, her voice (not a great technical voice, I just love her voice tonality) the production quality on her MV and her story as far as how she did explode in popularity. Many despise her for that, and I'm one applauding the audacity she had to do it the way she did to do what she loves to do.
Here is a duo song with her and a japanese collab ruclips.net/video/M85xU-tbQ6c/видео.html (only 4 million views I know)
Here is one of her very early release, only 33 million views and you still probably never heard of her. (I know right ?) Early in stage so a bit less refined than her latest things, as she progreses fast. ruclips.net/video/5y3xh8gs24c/видео.html
Anyway, keep up the great work, and off I am on Spotify to listen to your band

Great Reaction! They are amazing. You just saw THE best female drummer in all of Japan - Tamu Murata. She was trained as a jazz drummer and effortlessly kills all metal riffs and fills. She also is a Once and danced a cover of Twice - Feel Special with other Japanese female metal drummers. Tamu is black leggings and blue shorts 😊 ruclips.net/video/H6Lv6B3CFMQ/видео.html (also my favorite Twice song with the most amazing lyrics)
I think Nemophila was supposed to be a one-off recording for the lead singer but the band and engineers were like "you guys are too damn good to just do one song or covers - you need to compose and perform originals" So they did and will be at Whiskey a go go this summer for their only USA tour date. I think they are amazing.

Nemophil-a (NOT “Nemophil-i-a) were founded in 2019. They are a supergroup composed of:
    Mary's Blood guitarist Saki
    ex-Lipstick vocalist Mayu
ex-Disqualia guitarist Hazuki (also plays with Lisa-X)
    ex-Hölderlins bassist Haraguchi-san, and
ex-Soramimi drummer Muratatam (also does other projects)
This is one of the bands to watch, no question. They almost seem to be enjoying a private joke, that goes "Hi, we're a bunch of cute, fun girls and we are going to rip your face off, and you are going to like it.” Initially, they were just a side project, co-organized Mayu with some help from Saki. They started off posting metal covers of well-known rock, pop and metal songs. Then they began posting originals, starting with “Oiran” ruclips.net/video/eyb2NtPwcxc/видео.html
The viral reaction seems to have convinced them they were onto something potentially big, so they’ve been putting a lot more work into it, including some successful live-streams and an appearance at the annual Japanese female rock festival NAONのYAON. They tend toward hard and heavy, but also do ballads and some pop covers. Drummer Murata Tamu took time off to give birth to her son, and on her return, the rest of the bandmembers gave her a welcome back that resulted in an extremely moving moment captured on live stream: “Life” ruclips.net/video/HFnEYhbEAqg/видео.html
After Oiran, others to check (if you haven’t already) include "Dissension", which will fry whatever is left of your circuits: ruclips.net/video/26aMuahxz8c/видео.html and “Raitei”, which means “Thunder” in Japanese, and yes, they bring the thunder: ruclips.net/video/lh-dVLKP314/видео.html
Saki is the only one who had been with a breakout band before (Mary’s Blood); Hazuki and Murata-tamu are also considered elite musicians and have worked with a lot of other top artists. Hara-san is the youngest but is clearly a great talent and has been developing in front of our eyes. And of course Mayu is quickly establishing herself as a one of the world’s best metal vocalists.
    Nemophila’s youtube channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCvoAeGZoC8giXP59NOZABIAvideos
If you haven’t already, another band frequently suggested after Nemophila is Hanabie. Try “We Love Sweets” ruclips.net/video/G18yyvPCiTM/видео.html

Nemophila is a blue flower found in California of all places It's a Latin word. Adabana is too - it's species of weed that flowers.
Dissension is a song they are known for, Revive is another good one.
Rock is alive and well, and living in female metal bands in Japan. But if you want your mind blown, check out Voice of Baceprot, an Indonesian female metal trio out of Indonesia; who are Muslim, and have to fight to play. They do the best cover of Rage Against the Machine's Killing in the Name (Tom Morello is a big fan), or God Allow Me Please to Play Music are two good songs to check out. They are phenomanal.

Well, in the west there’s a lack of true dedication and work ethic to actually become this good. So there’s that. But the other far reaching reason you don’t find a band like Nemophila, Hanabie or Band Maid here is that the label would ruin them straight away, trying to turn them into musical sex workers. To put it into a garden metaphor, the soil and climate is too poor.
