I remember going to Galveston in the early 70's as a kid. It was a very small town back then. There are several gun emplacements along the coast that you used to be able to explore from the WW2 days. To be honest it was more interesting back then.
We lived in Houston from 1988 through 1996 and took many days off in Galveston to go to the Pyramids, have a burger at Cafe Michaelburger, and ride the ferry watching the dolphins. We greatly miss all of this. Thanks so much for posting these wonderful memories!
Nice video. I made a run to Galveston and Surfside a few years ago on my way back to Florida from Indiana. It's not on the way but the first time I went to Texas was 1975 as I was stationed at USCG Sta Freeport. It was still snowing in Indy so I drove do south on I65 to I10 to get out of the cold and snow sooner. When I got to the turn off point towards Bolivar ferry I made a course change from getting to destination through Houston to going through Galveston by ferry. There where many thing I hadn't done yet in those days including riding a ferry so I had plenty of time to kill and took the opportunity. Today it is somewhat desolate in the area between I10 and the beech road. Mostly farm land. In those days i think it was mostly swamp and the only light was the stars for many miles. I might have seen 2 cars and I don't remember how far it was but I was at the point of no return some time around 3 AM with the fuel I had left and not even a farm house to buy some gas from. 19 Yrs old and blindly stepping into adventure but that is part of the reason I was headed their anyway. It was 1975 and a printed map, no cell phones and I had to look at 3 different maps to even find my destination, Freeport. The difference is amazing in that area today compared to 1975 and it is still an interesting trip especially if you get the chance to watch crop dusting when you drive through.
I wonder how many people WANTED to stay at the San Luis but stayed at the Holiday Inn next door instead because it was cheaper. (That's what I did. - at 4:02)
@@Letsgovideousa Been going to the coast for about three years now and this is "one of those things to do" list. BTW, Great hamburgers at the Spot and great Mexican food at Salsas. Gonna try Fisherman's Warf on Labor Day weekend.
Hi, several residential homes, public parks and public beaches are on the other side, like Bolivar Beach or Crystal Beach, or you can just drive and connect with interstate -10 and go up to Beaumont, TX.
Hi Douglas, The beach in Crystal Beach Texas and on Bolivar Peninsula is one of a kind, and the last of its kind. Vehicles are allowed to drive on, park and enjoy all 27 miles of coastal waters. Golf carts are allowed on the beach. UTVs (side-by-side) and ATVs (straddle seat) are not allowed.
