Tamara, you are the only RUclipsr doing consistent, real-world tests of this camera! It's great to see someone actually out and about walking around with this camera (which is how probably 80% of people will use this camera anyway). I got the Action 2 a few days ago and I love mine. So I enjoy seeing how you use yours in everyday life!

Thanks, Phillip. I just feel like you'll never get a true sense for something unless you actually use it, it's why I like going out, playing around and seeing how something performs during proper usage.

I love that you’ve taken one product and made multiple videos about it. I hate that “big” RUclipsrs only review an item once then we never see or hear about that item ever again. It takes the credibility away when it seems like they prioritize being the first to release a video for views rather than actually helping us consumers get real world and useful information

While I would 100% agree 4K120 is not a normal thing to do indoors long time 4K 30 is and i am seeing results of less that 5 minutes at 19c. However it’s not as simple as that as once it’s overheated your then down to less 3 minutes when you try to record again.
It’s unfair to say people stirring the pot on an unrealistic use case because no one said it’s not for use indoors. This is as much about the fact that no one said you could get issues in a static environment.
This camera is sold as an premium product where it can be used both indoors, outdoors and underwater. DJIs own webpage shows it recording indoors yet it still does not say it may overheat in any mode other than 4K120.
For instance many of us use these in cars for filming, in places where it’s still and no airflow yet it’s still in an environment where a normal camera is not likely to be used. Some may assume action cameras are only for 1-3 minute clips but that’s not the case for everyone.
I am privileged to own a number of cameras like the GH5,G9, S5, A6400 and others and I am well aware of that they can overheat, if your into cameras you would have seen the Canon R5 issues as well. We know cameras overheat and even the GoPro does but the issues here is reviews and DJI completely hid this from us and when many of us who bought them received them were shocked to find this limitation. If we had been told upfront then OK we could have made out purchasing decision’s based on that information. However we were not. In fact DJI changed it website after many of us received the camera to say it could overheat in 4k120.
There is no question walking outdoors in U.K later summer early winter it’s not going to overheat however tests done in 19c is still much cooler than other places will get. If fine for me on a freezing beach in wales but how is it going to perform in AU or other places.
More than the overheating the workflow is also quite painful and it should not be overlooked how much damage could be caused to the battery in the these temperatures too.
If your someone that is just going to use it out doors or in water ect then you will be fine. If your just doing 1-3 minute clips you will be good. However it does not change the fact many of us were misled on how this product could be used.
The “your holding it wrong” argument is unfair to throw at people as no one said how you should be doing it. I expect to be able to do what I can with every other action camera I own with it unless it’s specifically stated otherwise.
Finally I will add congrats on your great channel and amazing content, really great work. Just don’t fall into the trap that manufactures can’t get things wrong. I have deal with DJI for a very long time and they make some amazing products however they also should be held to account when they behave in a way that’s not good for users of their products. Sponsored reviews and early looks don’t tell people the full truth sadly and this leads to disappointment when people find things they were not expecting.
Please salty safe and keep up the fantastic work.

Had the Action 2 for a bit over a month now. I did what I would deem an unrealistic test and set it up with a power bank, 4k 30fps (what I'd normally shoot fishing or traveling - minus when I'd crank the FPS for that short clip) and let it run for a few hours. I stopped it after 3 hours and 15 minutes and it was warm but I could still put my hand around the camera fine. Point being, I stopped it... it didn't over heat.
For me being able to loop record for hours on end for fishing is important. I don't need 4k 60-120fps for my situation, so for me it works great.
I do use the SmallRig cage that goes around the whole unit and it claims to help with the heat dissipation (they claim 40% better). I don't know how much it helps but the cage does get warm too, so I have to imagine that it does help in some capacity.
Either way, I figure if I had it sitting on a floor with a power bank for 3+ hours... that out on the kayak I wouldn't have any issues with 4k30fps and overheating. (Sorry for long winded comment)
Thank you for the great videos!

Wow that's a long time shooting, but good to know it didn't overheat on you. Yeah, I'm not sure if the case actually makes a difference but I still haven't had overheating issues so it's difficult to know.

    • @LeAn-rl5yn

Agree! who wants to shoot 4k120p for hours, that's crazy. There is no problem at all if the user brings the camera outside and goes around. But anyway, I think overheating could happen if the environment is too hot, especially in the summer.

Great call out on real word use. One thing I noticed is that it does get pretty hot while charging, but I record in 4K 24 so I don’t see issues with over heating. I also hear that running the camera without the extra screen or battery could cause it to over heat quicker.

Oh my gosh! I literally just made a video talking about the same thing.. but just with all the newer cameras (gopro hero 10, insta360 Go2, and Dji action 2).. I keep seeing these test out here testing these cameras completely wrong and like.. really…? No one uses these cameras that way. Why on earth would you put a camera on a table.. and just record with everything to the max! Who no one shoots like that. Lol. I don’t know anyone who shoots at 4k120 for like 30 mins.. and even when shooting indoors and it’s your main camera.. turn off stabilization and a few other things..
overheating isn’t new.. it’s like a real thing on cameras… Even when working on professional shoots for tv.. no one shoots continuously in like 4k120… even when on soap operas that shoot 4k60.. they cut.. they never shoot for a long period of time. Lol.
I do think that overheating is a problem.. but my thing is.. the test are so dumb. And don’t even offer solutions to overcoming the issue..

    @Ozpeter 2 года назад

Yup. Even the mighty DJI can't overcome the laws of physics. With these tiny cameras, the amount of surface to dissipate the heat from the CPU and battery is very small, so they will get hot. As you said, long video at high frame rates don't make much sense - but there is a use case when you don't know when you might want to slow down just a bit of a video and you don't know when you kid is actually going to fall off his bike.... if that's the scenario then the Action 2 might not indeed be the right tool for the job. But it doesn't mean the Action 2 is therefore the wrong tool for any job. To me it's a great creative tool in the 'robust category, rather than the 'sports' category. The 'action' category is too vague a title in my view. "Itz Sky" did a great review entirely using the Action 2 creatively, really showing what it can be used for, and that's so much better than those reviewers who sit behind a desk and talk nonsense. You, of course, also do not sit behind a desk! Thanks for getting out in the cold and wind to bring us this latest demo.
(Wind noise - I did a video on my electric scooter yesterday and I was surprised how little wind noise I got when zooming along, compared to more obvious wind noise when the wind blew when I wasn't moving. Is DJI doing something AI-style here that's really clever? Also, the camera does not have a wind noise setting when used standalone - you have to connect the screen to see that - does it have wind noise reduction always on when used alone or does it inherit the last setting used when the screen was attached? More experiments needed...)

I'm sorry Tamara, but you're test is not credible at all. I used this camera attached to a dog harness, mounted on a moving dog, so there was plenty of air flow around the camera. The resolution of the recording was set to 1080p, 25 fps (so in fact almost the lowest you can set on this camera). Outdoor temperature was high indeed - about 30C (but sorry, people mostly want to shoot on a sunny day). The camera recorded for 14 minutes then off it goes - overheated. Waited about 20minutes to cool down, turn it on again - recorded for 7 minutes and overheated. Battery felt down to 50% after these 21 minutes of recording. I'm sorry, but this kind of camera is of no use to me and probably many people who just want to record a simple dog walk.

I purchased this hoping to replace session 5 for my surfing POV but fully disappointed with such a low battery life and really easy to mis-use. Action 2 is somehow suddenly becomes photo mode from video mode when you frequently start and stop recording. The lock screen to avoid unintended control is not well thought out that it easly unlock and puts you in stupid complicated mode selection. This is the camera designed by Chinese nerd who never engage in action sports. The name "action 2" is simply misleading where the camera is totally not suitable for action sports recording. BTW I never experienced over heat because I only used it in ocean.
