You could just experience a little nip and then just ignore it. You won't even realize the danger you are in until the symptoms of rabies kick in. By then, it's too late and the damage is irreversible and you end up dead, just like the movie Cujo.

I've never been attacked by a dog before, but some idiot let his 100+ lb dog off a leash and it instantly charged me and came within an inch of biting me. I think because I stood my ground it backed down at the last millisecond but that situation could have ended so unbelievably bad in so many ways.

Some dog have to learn the hard way not to attack people. Besides it's not like the pepper spray is going to kill the dog. The spray is just going to help teach the dog not to attack people. Some dogs only learn the hard way. If I was the owner I would not even get made I probably would have laughed because I know my dog would eventually learn not to attack the mail man. You simply put the box on the fence line, or you don’t get mail. Putting mail anywhere other than the mailbox is a no-no, if a carrier is just dropping mail that sloppy and lazy. There are regulations you can easily access to see how this situation is properly handled. In this instance the carrier is in the wrong by entering a yard he knows a dangerous dog is in.
