I'm confused. So James is going to be doing hot takes on brands like Nike and Carhartt? So no more car stuff? I seen his speed channel video it left me confused. I don't want him talking about that sht😅
First reaction : abject horror. Second reaction: Thank God I'm not the only one who noticed that Donut has become trend chasing clickbait corporate nonsense.
On the one hand yah im sad what the channel turned into... on the other hand im feeling abject relief that this wasn't due to someone didling kids or assaulting someone or some other messed up shit...
Donut stuff is so overproduced. Music is wild, foley is way too much, cuts every second - just simmer down. They hit their stride about a year ago and now it’s nonsense
@@iandesoucey9369 it was headed that way slightly but it REALLY got crazy after that first Nissan ad. That's what started multiple tiers of advertisements where you could pay to not have the yellow bar at the bottom. It became a lot less about the community and more about grabbing a new audience you don't have to care about every video.
Up to speed did not just stop abruptly, it got too "memy" imho. The later episodes are just full of jokes and miss a lot of key information, only scratching the surface level.
When corporate buys a company, tries to tell creatives what to do, they scatter, sun goes down, they pop up tomorrow in a new place lol You guys have the talent, we will come with you! lol
Money pit miata is what got me into donut. We dont need 100k budgets on a build, they are fun, but unobtainable for most viewers. Money pit miata was in depth and made building on a budget look so fun.
Totally agree. MoneyPit Miata was cool because was just a guy in his garage trying to improve his cheap little sports-car and that's what they should focus on. 👍
Donut slowly went from a channel about car and racing history, car science and car builds to a channel about testing cheap products and reacting to other videos every week. Hope you guys can really take it back to the OG concepts with this channel.
I mean it was pretty obvious donut was a dork that didn't know shit about cars. Since day 1 I knew all these other guys carried the show, he just hired the right people while not knowing what was going on with his own youtube channel.
Also very top of my page as soon as I opened the app and I couldn’t be happier. One of the only times I’ve been impressed with RUclips and the algorithm lol
Man I never thought you all would go separate ways. I understand exactly how it feels to have a company you helped build sold and no longer listen to your creative input that helped build it all while telling you to just do what you're told. I helped build Mystro in SF, CA into a million dollar company then got kicked to the curb when it was sold off. Props to all of you I'll be following along.
Holy crap guys…I’m sad and excited at the same time. Loved you guys at Donut, low key, it will be hard to watch it without you guys there. Looking forward to seeing what you cool kids do with Big Time!!
I started working as a freelance automotive writer a couple years ago, and your channel was incredibly helpful for me to understand car concepts that weren't clear to me at the time. I'm here for the ride!
@@bradthackston5217 No, they can't have the big budgets like Donut, don't lie to yourself. I don't think you understand how big Donut actually is now. They're bought out by a multibillion dollar company and has expanded their clothing line all over the world. Besides, they don't want it to be as big as Donut.
I think low budget is a lot of the appeal of many channels. I don't think this one will be different, and as they grow in following and money, so too will the content. A grassroots beginning is a ton of fun to experience as a viewer. Good luck boys.
Money Pit is the main reason that I started watching Donut. I was a massive fan of that show. It did a great job of showing what most of us deal with when working on our cars. Most of us don't have a full garage dedicated just to our project car let alone a lift. I think the majority of us are rocking Harbor Freight tools and whatever we can afford that works. The first season of Money Pit embodied that to me. The struggle is real for most of us. My favorite moment of Money Pit was a shot of Jobe laying on his back under the car holding the miatas transmission looking so frustrated. That was the most relatable shit that I ever saw on Donut. Glad to see you guys stepping out on your own.
Donut definitely has gone from best friends in a garage making videos for the people to best friends making videos in a corporation for the corporation, I share the exact same feelings and feel this is the right move
Yea I've been waiting for a money pit S14 or something like that or even just a continuation from the old miata. It was a really good middle ground show imo for high low too since high car had stupid expensive shit and low car was wayy too cheap
money pit was truly great, i was looking for my first car during that time and i think it's not a coincidence that i got an NA miata (since then i've learned wrenching myself and still own it and love it)
James is Untouchable but I like the guy on the left so im gonna support and Donut dont put shit out anymore like the old material … I would even take James Buying cars and modding them just cuz he’s so regular it would feel like if I was doing it ..if that makes sense
Saw James’ farewell too… why didn’t you guys do something together? He really praised the two of you for taking Donut into its third-wave, post-Covid, and seems emotionally attached to you. Maybe personality, money?.. both? Anyhow, stoked to subscribe to the new venture, boys! 🤘
B2B, Money Pit, Up to Speed, Wheelhouse, Science Garage and that type of content is why I became a Donut fan. Over the years, I saw how less and less content like that was created. I stayed for the little nuggets of the content released from time time that resembled what I loved fromthe crew. I wish you nothing but the best, count me in!
I agree 100% I stayed in it for the boys but I was becoming more disappointed with the content overall. Not that it was bad, just not what brought me to subscribe. Zach & Jerry are gonna do great things!
Agreed, James was too much for me and I kinda had to stop watching for a while. Too much of the video became about him rather than whatever the video was supposed to be about
What first got me into Donut was the science guy explaining tech stuffs and to this day I still don't even know his name. James and you two and Nolan are my favourites and hoping to see you guys do more stuff together even outside if Donut.
You guys just started this channel, have 1 video and ALREADY have 865k subs. This speaks volumes to how much people love you guys and are looking forward to your next chapter.
The moment Donut sold equity to an ‘investment group’ sealed its fate. Random suits looking at Excel spreadsheets started pushing for cashflow metrics and ‘maximizing value’ without a care as to the core values and pedigree of Donut. Thank you for making this brilliant decision and I hope to follow your success with this new channel.
yep, those suits only care about the numbers because the moment they get kicked out or burned the company to the ground, they've built their portfolio and made their money. All on paper, they were successful but in reality, they were poor managers.
@spencer6044you say “improving them” but what that actually means is optimizing them to make money. Which is fine, but it certainly doesn’t improve the content in my eyes.
One of the reasons I haven't been watching Donut that much is because it stopped feeling like a group of guys having fun in a garage and started feeling like a business automotive YT channel. I won't say the soul was lost, but it had changed.
You know Donut is falling apart when James, who known as the most explosive, expressive one on channel started to look burned out and losing passion. I noticed that from the last 2 years of his involvement in videos, he looked tired and don't want to do it anymore. That's definitely gotta do with the "business owner" not listening to them anymore.
I used to watch Donut religiously, but it all changed when they got rid of my favorite show "This is everything you need to know to get UP TO SPEED!!!.....". I loved the backstory on the cars, engines, and designers. I friggin loved that segment alone.
Same. I realized they were starting to go big corporate around the same time they cancelled that show. My daughter and I used to watch it all the time. Now it’s all shit tbh. I liked Aaron Parker when he was around too. It’s a shame the wholesome channel this originally was is no more.
@@T7M7P7L7R for real, they completely botched the end of the Z series. They milked the hell out of any content they could get out of those 350s before they moved on to the Tacos lol
Moneypit made me feel confident buying a used car and do works on my car, you sold me the idea that repair can be fun and on budget if I am willing to spend time with it, and it does. Thank you so much for your works on Donut, glad you start out again on this new channel.
im happy for them but i could give a shit about ANOTHER S14 build on youtube. let alone a ANOTHER low budget one. theyre not gonna be HI-LO on their own. Theyre gonna be doing LO-LO every time now.
This gave of Car Throttle vibes Once Alex left it was all downhill from there From Top gear to Donut When will people realise it's not about the brand, its the people
Yep, that's the circle. Small creators make good content that feels authentic or improvised or both. Faceless corporate giant buys the brand. The original talent either leaves or becomes so constrained that they stop being themselves. The brand loses everything that made it good and, at some, seizes to exist. Rinse and repeat.
@13:46 that right there is just a pierce to my heart man, the first time ever anyone has said what I am going, I know many people are facing it, but it's really healing to me to hear someone said that to my face. As a creative person, you can only take so much "no"
Going back to the roots with the all star crew. This is what I want. It's sad seeing great content creators going away from what many people fell in love with and going to the big time view stuff. Very excited for this channel.
Jeremy from ECS here, Zach you were one of my favorite guys to work alongside there. If you ever need photo or video work hit me up dude. Congrats on the big move, proud of you.
Mark my words, THIS will be THE BEST car channel on the internet. Two of the most entertaining creators decided to open up a channel where they can do what they want. It will feel homey again, it will feel like friends doing things again. I wish you the best guys, we are here for the whole ride.
Donut was getting a bit too "mass entertainment" instead of "car content for the regular car enthusiast" hope this guy take it back to the good old days when they would actually show you how to work on your car with a real down-to-earth budget. Also loved Up to Speed fell like it was very educational!
Iunno, MCM is pretty tough compotation. But if anyone got a swinging chance, its these guys. The only other ones that got close was RoadKill and I haven't watched that since it went paywalled.
@@federicodecuadro5672 There was one Donut episode where they made two massive errors in the same vid. They said a dodge viper had a v8 instead of a v10, and then they went on to describe the 2005 Ford GT as having a ecoboost twin turbo v6 instead of a supercharged V8 and ever since then (maybe a year or year and a half ago) I started questioning things lol
Zack just gave me major flashbacks saying EBITDA. I quit a job after 12 years that was owened by a small family and got sold to a large corporation. A new vp came in and wouldn’t shut up about EBITDA. The guy knew nothing about our industry, only how to figure out overall growth even if it was reducing long standing work force without having any care for people. So glad you guys and James are all doing your own thing now. I have subscribed to your channel and Speeed and hope maybe both of your channels will collaborate one day. Best of luck.
I stopped watching Donut a couple years ago because it was becoming click-baity and lame. I'm so excited to see the two serious/informative guys breaking away to give us better content. Thanks guys, excited to see what happens.
So what you're saying, is that you disliked Donut, before disliking Donut was cool? 😅 Dayum, we got a badass over here 😂 P.S. Out of curiosity, how many years is "a couple"? Seeing as how, by some definitions, Donut as a whole is only 'a couple' years old 😅
@@eviljesus84Lmmfao did you just use a joke they did in the video. And do it in a smug way like you thought you were witty because of it?? Lmmfao sucks to be you I bet.
But they are admitting it was entertainment guys not car guys, and they are entertainment guys not car guys. I get it, you enjoy it and these two are going to give more information etc, but you need to put it in its place, have fun watching, but talk to real mechanics etc.
740K subs with just this one video so far... you guys will be just fine. We felt the changes you talk about and we agree. We're here for whatever you want to show us.
I'm hyped. Zach doing ACTUAL car stuff is why I ever watched Donut in the first place. If Beremiah is gonna do bike stuff as well then they've got me hooked already.
The thing I don't like about new Donut is they focused on entertainment. The thing I love about old Donut is it being educational. It being inspirational to get people into cars. Bring back the science, car/racing history, mechanics, Money Pit style videos, Hi/Low Season 1 style videos, etc. The new entertainment-focused Donut is not bad but it's not the same Donut I used to love who inspired me to get into cars in the first place.
@thelaw_00 - I agree. As cool as the Baja ranger is they've dropped over $100,000 that's not something I (or most people) can associate with ir get inspired to do. @omikron6218 I don't mind sponsors as long as it's not some sketchy drip ship thing or random VPNs, etc. they gotta get paid somehow. You can still have integrity while doing a sponsor read. Plus, you can skip the commercials lol
They even mentioned how they wanted to work on Science Garage and it was canned before they got there. Science Jobey is a hilarious, insightful, chaotic, force of nature and I love every second of it.
@@omikron6218 You can blame that on the new owners.. They did that to the Bob Villa show when they took that over too.. Just giant adverts disguised as a video... It's crap and I hope donut succumbs to their own greed..
I don’t think they carried donut. I feel like it’s James and Nolan that do. I subscribed mainly because of James’ personality in Up to Speed series. As well as the “father/son” references between the two
Nothing more beautiful than true independence; y'all are awesome and having the complete freedom to implement your own ideas will be a joy - congrats on the leap! See you at the shrimp bar with the rest of us jaded auto channels. 😘
I like how they mention Bart and Science Garage, because the internet still talks about how great that segment was. Glad to see internally it was the same way.
I've noticed a shift in Donut's priorities for some time. The old content catered to real gearheads, while the new focus is on clicks. Some content, like the build series are still dope. This change is a common reality in business; as profits grow, the close-knit atmosphere fades (or the company risks bankruptcy lol). I'm really glad you took this leap-it speaks volumes about your character and passion for the art.
I’ve noticed the same. So many random sponsored videos these days like “driving a brand new Toyota Tacoma!!”, which is completely uninteresting but I know they’re raking in the money for that type of content. Private equity and the endless growth mindset really ruins everything.
As I have observed RUclips over its life, I detected this around 2014, especially when google got more involved and the money really started flowing, then the first adpocolypse, and the tight-knit relationship with creators and RUclips the company drifted apart faster and faster. I agree that it is a fact of life in business that cash is king, but I still yearn for that Creator-run platform we had all those years ago.
This video really hit home. I started with my company 12 years ago and it was just 125 people globally and we used to all know each other and just do things. The culture was amazing. We got up to 1500 and then got bought by a company with 230,000 people and have no idea what is going to happen. It's very sad. You guys are inspiring me.
Ya, series like Money Pit and Up To Speed are gone, replaced by Tiktok reactions and "testing" chinese garbage accessories. Nice to see some wrenching again.
It’s important as fans of this new channel that we sit through the adverts. It’s free money for them and it’s only a couple minutes of our day. WATCH THE ADs!!!
@@yourlifeisagreatstory Why should i watch an add on a video that is basically one long merch plug with some super low effort reaction content sprinkled into it? Please make a "Prove-It" series, where you take aftermarket upgrades and prove whether or not they meet their claims. Love to see some before/after dyno's on Cold-Air Kits, Cat-Back exhaust kits, Downpipes, etc etc etc.
I stopped going to school a year after COVID hit and couldn't decide what to study for college. I was watching Donut everyday while on lockdown. Now I'm in my 3rd year of studying automotive technology and these guys are such an inspiration to me.
I was one of those people that thought you guys owned Donut so, from that perspective, it's about time you all start benefiting directly (and proportionally) from your efforts. I'll watch every episode and buy the merch - you got this!
Absolutely shocked that Donut didn't move the earth to keep you two. You were the lifeblood of those videos. I'm also surprised that so much was going on behind the scenes with writes, producers, directors, etc. It makes sense now that 10%+ of every video is advertisements.
They watched the video just like everyone else. And I have to agree with their comment. These guys are a massive asset to Donut and the corporate penny pushers that don’t understand that just let millions and millions of dollars in value go. Like the OP comment said, they should have moved heaven and Earth to keep them at Donut. Offered them massive pay packages, company equity, direct control over the content they produce, budgets to pursue the projects they want to work on. But the corporates said nah and will now have a slowly dying channel as the faces we tune in for are leaving. This and James taking a backseat will lead directly to the death of Donut within a few years. Which is fine, honestly. Once something is gobbled up by corporate, it ends up sucking. I love all the guys and gals at donut and will continue to follow them as they slowly splinter off. I’m here for them, not the name Donut.
I remember thinking Donut was just an OK, mildly fun car channel. Then Money Pit began. I was then forever hooked. If you guys can transport me back to that magical time (to which I have zero doubt), I would be immensely grateful. Thanks for everything you guys have done; looking forward to what is to come.
This was my experience too. The first stuff I saw was Up To Speed, and it was great. It was well written, and James towed the line of goofy, funny, and sincere. Then Money Pit was pure gold. Most of us have been there -- a car that we love but can't help modifying, things go right, things go wrong. Zach was a fantastic host. Then the listicles and Wish review videos became the norm, and I pretty much stopped watching. It's comforting to see that that was the experience of Zach and Jerry as well. I'm sure this channel will be great.
The fact that Donut Media didn't say thank you on your announcement but said thanks on Speeeds Announcement rubs me the wrong way. Team Bigtime all day baby!
It’s important that you both know: we as the fans and audience noticed the changes that pushed you both away, and we are all on your side to blow this channel up by taking it back to grassroots builds and making the content YOU love to make. Dude I have so much respect for your story, because I can totally relate to it. Went to college got myself a couple of them there fancy degrees. Worked as a software engineer for years and was pretty damn good at it if I may say so myself. I made more money than I ever thought I would, but staring a computer screen coding every day was just not my cup of tea. I grew bored with what I was doing and frustrated at even the thought off having to do it anymore. I had enough money saved to get me by for a year, so I quit. Thankfully I had a very supportive wife that had noticed the changes in me and she was all for me quitting. My wife and I were talking and she mentioned that I should try and do something with my woodwork. Ive always been passionate about woodworking and literally had an entire woodshop behind my parents house. My parents have a auxiliary building behind their home that they did nothing with and my dad allowed me to renovate it and turn it into a woodshop as long as I paid all the expenses. So I started modeling designs of small furniture pieces and building them. Once I had a pretty decent selection of work I was ok with, I started selling the stuff at local flea markets and craft fairs. I was shocked at how well and fast my items sold. After doing that for a while, I was like ok its time I turn this into a legit business. Thus was born my woodworking business. I built custom cabinetry and fine furniture pieces now. I only make about 2/3 what I was making in my career but Im so much happier. I do something that I love and gives me piece every day.
Bart was the reason I started watching Donut, and you both drew me in more. I didn't realize Donut was acquired by another company, but that makes sense as that was the time I started losing interest in it. Let's make this *BIGTIME*

Its sad you can tell the guys there like James and Nolan are not happy with it either, but they no longer control what content is made.

Up to speed did not just stop abruptly, it got too "memy" imho. The later episodes are just full of jokes and miss a lot of key information, only scratching the surface level.

Money pit miata is what got me into donut. We dont need 100k budgets on a build, they are fun, but unobtainable for most viewers. Money pit miata was in depth and made building on a budget look so fun.
Yeah me too, I actually bought a miata a few months ago because I learned so much from zach and working on his miata

Totally agree. MoneyPit Miata was cool because was just a guy in his garage trying to improve his cheap little sports-car and that's what they should focus on. 👍

B2B, Money Pit, Up to Speed, Wheelhouse, Science Garage and that type of content is why I became a Donut fan. Over the years, I saw how less and less content like that was created. I stayed for the little nuggets of the content released from time time that resembled what I loved fromthe crew.

Private equity ruins everything
They were sold in 2021 so unless you have disliked them since then and all their series then it wasn’t just the private equity that ruined them
@spencer6044you say “improving them” but what that actually means is optimizing them to make money. Which is fine, but it certainly doesn’t improve the content in my eyes.

It translates through the screen, I can promise you that. Money Pit was amazing and we want more like that, so stoked for you boys!!
agreed
Facts
I basically stopped watching donut about a year ago. You could tell the channel just wasn't the same anymore. I'm stoked for you guys! Bring back the old school content!
Agreed... it's become WAYYYYYyyyy too formulaic... super predictable "safe" content.. I'm excited for the future with this channel. I'm down for the ride!
lowkey same, it feels like the quality of the vids has gone down over time, i didn't even realize it but i havent watched donut in ages
Donut and hoonigan went downhill fast…
@@Eco19throtl too
I was an og donut fan, and an og donut detractor. Im glad yall are doing this. We need REAL car content. Not that corpo bs.
Same here bro, I was there pre 500k subs. I stopped watching after I after noticing that the donut content was forced and the magic/chemistry wasn’t there anymore.
corpos ruin everything, and they never learn
@@ruben3305 i also stopped watching and only really watched once in a while once they realeased some big production stuff, but i realized that I stopped because the videos just seem too robotic almost like ai scripted hahah
The humbleness and humility you endured is why i will follow you to the ends of the earth, you cant buy integrity, thank you guys.
"don't worry, you'll still be seeing us!" then i click over to this channel and it's "why we're leaving donut"!
THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING
but youll still be seeing them (for a short while)
I thought the same, I guess that just means it was filmed awhile back.
Seriously 😂
Same.
The fact that 60k a year is poor in LA is crazy
Really poor, I live in the Bay Area and 60k is like minimum wage.
There’s too much money in California everyone has so much money that everyone always pays top dollar
60k is pretty poor in most states out west at this point. Unless you're in rural Nevada, good luck!
I work in healthcare and day dream of making 60k 😅

Jeremiah is just that guy. I mean, he talks about how he wasn't exactly favored at first, but 5 days after posting these two almost have a million subs. 🐐
Talk about the ultimate getting your tires pumped hey? Can’t imagine the relief these two boys got after so many views and subs in so little time. Super excited for you guys!
These 2 are definitely the best out of the donut crew
Glad you guys are better off! Excited for motorcycle content, maybe a trackday?
I loved watching you guys, James and Nolan. After early 2022 I noticed a shift in Donut and it really wasn’t the same feel as when I started watching back in 2016. I missed up to speed and the old feel the Channel had. Glad you two and James are doing your own thing. Best of luck gentlemen.
You two guys are the reason Donut was so big over the past 3-4 years. I love that you now will have your own channel. WOW. Congratulations! Yes, I've subscribed.
Don't forget James
@@2alawabidingcitzen James was overrated, annoying, and worthless in the shop. Plus most of what he said was written by Jerry.

For real

100%, them talking about getting to do less of the stuff they like echoed my own feelings about how much I enjoyed the old donut videos

sad to see this separation but even sadder is what donut became in the last 2 years where is wheelhouse, bumper to bumper,up to speed ,money pit ,high low . i was eagerly waiting every afternoon for all of these.
fr they got bought out and began churning cheap, generic content that literally anyone could make. The new content is devoid of the personality that made us fall in love with Donut in the first place.
Exactly. I unsubbed a couple months back cause shit was boring
Man some of those videos helped me with depression. Money pit got me out of bed and into a shower on days I couldn’t

You know what would be cool? That after you guys set up the path of the channel, that you can have cameos with James and Jesse along the way! Supporting y'all, let's get it!
As a person who left a corporate machining job to go home to a one man shop turned three man shop over night, so worth it.

Regardless, stay out of the drama, make good parts, don’t be the cocky I know everything just outta school kid. And when ever you can, pick the old timers brains for advice on work holding or how they would do it. I learned more working than I did in school.
@@Mrmecom2 Not at all! I'm super careful about the machines. They honestly scare me. I'm also taking a course on mechanical drafting and designing. My plan is to potentially go to college to be a mech engineer depending on how my career develops

Watching Jobe work on the Miata is the entire reason im still into cars today.
he inspired me to work on cars and buy a miata 🫡😼😼
Hes the reason i built a 240hp na6 and watched donut for years.
Same.
Hi Lo was what brought me to Donut. Money Pit was what kept me here. Watching a video in the same garage brings the soul of the old Donut back.
Wish they would bring bart back
Man, Bart was such a good host aswell! Hope he’s doing well too

435k subscribers for a channel that's three days old, only one video uploaded with zero automotive content. You two honestly felt like the heart of Donut, and your 435k subscribers will probably agree with me. I'm honestly super happy for you two being able to chase your dreams, and finally do something that makes you happy.
On a totally unrelated note, I have a sweet 1997 Volvo 850R that needs some love. You give me the word, and I will be happy to drive down to LA so you can make me look good 😁

I still love donut but I think most of us can see the difference over the last few months. Donut has been a little lifeless compared to what it used to be. Jer and jobe saw this clearly and knew they needed to save what donut once was before the corporate take over. Much love to everyone at donut and glad this isn’t a complete separation! 💜🩵💛🖤

The Moneypit Miata has helped me so much with motivation to fix my own Miata. I bought it for cheap and it needed work, but more work than I realized. Yeah, you obviously do live outside of the US. I guarentee these guys we were working 50+ hours a week, especially if they were filming. Minimum for full time in the US, I believe, is currently 37 hours a week, but the standard for full time is 40 hours minimum.
Wow here in Aus I’m on a salary but it’s minimum 50 hours here.

As an automotive engineer, I started watching Donut when the Moneypit was all technical details because of Miata and the HiLow Zs also included much stories, techical stuff, and 'the way of how to get somewhere'. After that I also started to feel that it's just more and more videos but less stories and journeys.
Best of luck to you two and I'll definitely be watching this channel further on.
To me donut only makes tear list or guessing games they never just build cars anymore

Not to get all soap boxy, but private equity and corporate greed is killing creativity and crushing the souls of working men and women. It's just crazy to see how many different industries are affected by this these days.
I hope we reach a day where they simply can't keep being greedy bc they've emptied so many pockets that they can't take more! Industry after industry this has happened...
Which is why I started my channel, thank you for saying this
There's that whole buying up single family homes thing too...

Can't even trust most unions anymore in this regard. Most of them sit on their asses collecting our money, advertising how "amazing" they are on Facebook and shit, and the only "work" they do is hold meetings where they vote to raise the dues (read: vote to raise their own wages and buy more comfy chairs to sit in), even if their members are out of work for months on end.

I think I can speak for everyone here, you guys grew that channel yourselves 100%.
