Wendy: "not to be confused with the types of corset that make you faint from shortness of breath" People who also watch Bernadette Banner and Karolina Zebrowska: * screaming internally * alas the top came out super cool looking!!
YASSSSS. Pretty I'm guessing pretty much all of Costube basically just went full Kanye at 0:18, like: "Yo Wendy, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish..." And I'm just over here on my couch like, "I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in aggrieved irritation..."
Selene Ledezma the other 2 gals are Bernadette Banner and Karolina Zebrowska. I love them!! Their channels are (*kind of ??*) different styles from Wendy & Micharah but they are amazing!!!!
I’m so glad that I’m not the only one that loves them both ❤️. I have to admit I was thinking of Bernadette’s video on corsets and how they don’t cause a lot of the issues we now think they did.
Don’t feel bad about your corset comment! Everyone who gets into historical fashion has that one moment of realization of “ohhhhh, people wouldn’t have tortured themselves”, and movies have done such a thorough job of convincing us otherwise that it’s a tough paradigm to shift! Gorgeous work ❤️❤️❤️
Goodness your beautiful graphics and edits always inspire me- loved this!! I had a feeling you were doing the zip tie boning bc of Micarah - when I first saw her do that I was shook, like what an amazing hack! I would’ve never thought of that myself 😂 watching this is inspiring me to keep going on my wedding dress too 💛
I film some period tv shows sometimes and have to wear a historical corset and honestly it’s not bad at all! Doesn’t make you faint or give you stomach cramps like you’d think, and actually it gives you great posture to stop me from slouching around on set!
As a person who makes corsets!!! Here's some tips :) Using bias tape for channels will save you so, so much time. Plus hand sewing will add stability and look beautiful If you really wanna add that flare, look at historical corsets and see what boning channel patterns you like most. These types are based on tutor overbust corsets, and Stays, which range in time periods. If you want it to look like a modern bra, stays corsets can also have outer cups like a bra! It's not too much extra work, and looks fantastic under and over garments. If wearing as a top, because of the boning/zip ties or whatever you use, you should have a lining to protect the outer fabric and boning. Personally, I'd recommend sewing the boning channels Inside, between the two layers of fabric. The stitch will make it viable, it will feel just a bit better on, and it will look extremely clean and neat. If you're extra extra fancy, you can make the straps adjustable by sperating them in the middle, at the top of your shoulders, do a button hole stitch, and weave ribben between them. For the back, you definitely want that extra supportive fabric. If you want the corset to be tight at all, you'll need the support from the layers. Won't leave out that step!!! This video is super good, and I love everything about it! I was certainly so, so much worse when I made my first corset (especially as it was supposed to be the real, clinching thing, and yet it was 3x bigger than I wanted, and somehow puckered everywhere.) this just reminds me of why I love your channel.
Love the result!! 💞💝💖 The boning and channels are usually sewn on the wrong side of the fabric, in between the lining and the self, and the top stitching is whats visible from the front! The boning is apparent on the Vivienne Westwood bustier ones because the fabric is sheer + the top stitching!! Hope this was helpful !!
I am telling you: The editing is what makes this channels videos extra special. Even if I don't feel like crafting videos and don't want to see someone sew and am also in that moment not especially interested in seeing Wendy's charming personality I still watch her videos because of the mood, the little editing extras and the "story". It's awesome storytelling, time and time again. I love it!
Everything in this video is so gorgeous, the editing, the finished object, the reneissance pictures of you with the top! I wish I had a sewing machine at home, I’d really like to learn how to make my own clothes. Right now I’m just stuck with mountains of yarn and a stash of knitting needles from my late grandma, so I’ve been knitting the quarantine away! Already finished a sweater and mittens for my nephew (due date in August!), next up I’m gonna make a sweater for myself and some socks for my BIL. Oh and last year I bought a weaving kit because I was inspired by your vids and last week I finallt finished my first wall hanging! It came out super pretty. Thank you for the good vibes Wendy, all the best to you!
The paintings you put to represent your moods through this process are so accurate and beautiful. In love with the way you edited this video and the end result 💖
Love that!! I alter formalwear and bridal a lot and several designers like Jovani, Rachel Allen, Sheri Hill etc sell adorable two piece gowns with corset looking tops. Your videos are so inspirational and this one has given me some great ideas for adding boning for a better fit. Sweet little soft corset ❤️ it looks lovely on you. Thanks 🤗
Corsets are much more comfortable than people believe and people to wear them every day for any type of chores (yes, even men). I doubt working women would have bothered with corsets if they couldn't breathe while wearing them, but they harvested wheat in them and didn't faint. Rant over, I loved this video, as always! :) And the zip ties remind me of Micarah's videos. I love how small the sewing community is ❤️
I think you did an amazing job!! Such a creative way of doing at home boning using zip ties! That really was 🤯. Love the end result!!! Always so inspiring!
I’ve been making my own clothes for over a decade. I see very much like you, don’t use patterns just bite the bullet and got for it. During quarantine I started quilting and absolutely love it. So maybe give it a try!
thank U for showing those moments of doubt & stress that sewing does to you 😩 i literally go back to this video whenever i feel discouraged to finish my projects
I have no intention nor resources nor skills to recreate the majority of your projects but I'm trying to learn from you and it's super relaxing to watch your videos
Corsets don't make you faint! Unless they're being worn incorrectly! But great video, as always. It makes all the difference when you show the challenges you faced along the way.
ughh you look so gorgeous! whenever i go thrifting i never find corset that actually fit, so i might try this out even though i suck at everything involving diys lol also i love the weekly uploads, i wish i was as consistent as you are girl
I really think this could have been a thrift flip project too! Probably would just need a long tank top or stretch knit dress/shirt. These just aren't the times to go thrifting unfortunately :(
As someone who loves corsets and corset making you did an awesome job and it looks fabulous! I actually did a similar method with the pattern of my corset, i made a simple shirt parttern and added the darts. Lots of love from Argentina!
This came out much better than I was expecting. I think if you made it from woven material it would have worked better since you installed a zipper anyway. I kind of hated it in the inspiration pic but yours looks very cute on you. It's reminiscent of a stomacher from the old days. "A stomacher is a decorated triangular panel that fills in the front opening of a woman's gown or bodice. The stomacher may be boned, as part of a corset, or may cover the triangular front of a corset." in case you are wondering what that is. Good job!
I don't typically comment on videos but I've been thinking about this forever. YOu are AMAZING and have been an inspiration to me for SO long and in so soso many ways. Your attitude, generosity, openness, class, and style are just so impressive. I started sewing with my adoptive mom, and tried my best to keep going when she died but I became a heavy alcoholic and drug user. Today I am clean and sober and SO glad I have your clear, and concise videos to go through and relearn. Congrats on a mil. you deserve is SOSOSO much. Wishing you nothing but success and happiness. stay safe
I’ve never thought about diying a corset omg! I am excited to see if this is anything I can manage to do haha do you have any recommendations on good diys to start off doing if you’ve never sewn before?
I have an entire series on how to make a corset from drafting to sewing to lacing on my channel! If you have any questions feel free to dm me and I'm more than happy to help!
During this time, my mental health has been all over the place. Your videos have been helpful, hearing your soothing voice and watching your creativity has made my soul happy :) just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your work and I hope someday I find enough courage to sew again 😭 ps the editing and photos at the end are on fire
I’ve been procrastinating on a project because I accidentally bought boning without channels but you’ve given me the confidence I need to make my own channels 😭 thank you!! And your corset looks great!
Omg I did textiles in year twelve years ago and I did a corset bodice as well and imagine all that sweat and tears from hardworking! I feel for you and it looks great! Very innovative to use zip ties!
There is no proof that historical corsets made people faint. Contrary to popular belief, corsets were made to fit a girls body not push all her organs in. They were about as uncomfortable as a bra and only really held a person in. They did not contort their body like modern day corsets do or people assume they did. The reason their waists looked so tiny is because the bottom of the corset flared out past the hip in order to hold up their skirts; which in turn made their waist look super tiny and delicate. The average females waist was 26 inches (with a corset), which is a standard small. Taking into consideration that they did not have food so readily available like modern day women whos average waist size is 38 inches (without a corset).
Modern day corset are not horrible either if worn properly and you have the right size. It is harder to get the proper size corset now tho since most people have to order online. But I wear corset, I wear them around in sunny san diego walking constantly in my university though out the day. People often think that you have to tighten corset so tight that they hurt or hard to breath but thats not how it works you move slowly down in waist but its not required.
if you mean "modern day corsets" like ones from Orchard Corset or Timeless Trends, yes they technically do contort the body, since they're tightest around the squishiest part of the waist, but since that part is already squishy (ie it's not squeezing the ribs or hips, just the space in between) it doesn't hurt or anything like the word "contort" might imply. I have a 26-27" waist which can very easily be squished down to about 23" even if i only wear a corset very occasionally for costume purposes. but if you mean those stretchy "waist trainer" things then no those aren't even corsets to begin with
Thank you so much for saying this! I'm so sorry for perpetuating the misconception, I was trying to clarify that mine would be more of a tank top than a proper laceup BUT I admit I had that one scene from Pirates of the Caribbean in mind when I mentioned fainting which goes to show the influence media has 😖
@Wendy: That looks more like a bodice than a corset. The bodice sort of rounds out the bustline area and is less focused on smoothing the waistline or creating an hourglass-type silhouette. 😊
Hi Wendy! I love corset tops but I think God didn't gave me enought talent to make them… It looks so difficult but you made it so perfectly! I think you really have "fairy hands"... Such an amazing job! ;)
Fun Fact: if you're fainting from an actual corset, you know the ones from back then, that means it is not made properly or not being used properly. If you can't breath in an actual corset it's either not your size, tight laced, not designed properly, or maybe not well seasoned. The idea that the corset is a symbol of oppression by patriarchy was actually created by the patriarchy. Since women dominated the fashion industry back then, men decided to mock and make false claims about fashion. Corsets are actually very beneficial in that they help with posture, give support, and helped distribute the weight of dresses women wore back then. People who have back problems even use the corset to help them.
Always amazed at how well you innovate especially with quarantine supplies! I am so impressed with the finished product, wow! I also love all the painting editing, so fun!
Wow! That turned out super cute! Way to go on sticking with it and pushing through all of the doubt and mistakes -- as you say, sometimes you just have to do it and then learn from there! I love the montage at the end, lol. Great job!! 😘
i want to thank you wendy because I am trying to find a way to make a corset for my prom dress. It all seemed way too confusing for me and it's nice seeing someone on a similar journey with me. I will probably continue to struggle with it, but at least I will have this video to console me. Also I really like Micarah Tewers too, I'd say she is the chaos to youtube seamstresses while you and Bernadette Banner are the tranquility.
I think if you add just one layer of fusing you will enhance the quality and structure up a notch, your corset looks so beautiful, also fuse the ends of the zip ties so they can be soft, thank you so much this really helped alot
This week I tried making a corset style top too but didn't know what to use for the boning and as soon as i saw you use zip ties I got super happy because now I can finish my project!
Loved the corset top. I did not even notice dart being next to, instead of under, the boning channel until it was mentioned. A ragged seam would detract from the garment's appearance, but a well made dart adds to the garment's unique style.
Wendy this looks beautiful I’m defo trying this myself. Don’t be discouraged about peoples comment on historical corsets and whether it a bodice or corset no body asked so shut up . People are obsessed about proving good youtuber a wrong and bringing them down. This is Wendy’s take on A CORSET TOP she worked hard on if you don’t like it MOVE ON!
This has been me for the past few weeks. I've been working on a denim bustier/corset -ish top and it's been rough haha. But a real learning progress too. I love to see you figuring things out along the way because that has been my approach too. Even though it can be very demotivating that way because you keep seamripping and sewing things back a million times over and over, it still somehow is all worth it at the end :) You've been my inspiration and always motivate and inspire me to start new projects :) thank you for that
Nice job, just remember with knits you don’t need darts for the same fit. So in your sloper where it has darts, you can make a muslin in a woven fabric, sew your darts like usual, but then when transferring to a knit fabric you can just cut around the muslin with sewn darts. This is because the knit will stretch to accommodate for fit. A knit with darts usually ends up baggy depending on the amount of stretch. Woven would have done well with this pattern (like the Vivienne Westwood ones) no darts just multiple pattern pieces for the front. Always fun to follow your videos!
Yeah, real corsets are almost never made with knit. Stretch defeats the purpose of the support and negative ease that it is meant to give. This bustier is meant to be stretchy. She made a mistake with the darts.
It's more of a pair of stays rather than a corset. Corsets did not have straps and they were more fitted and flared. Stays had straps and were like a "sports bra". Corsets actually did not make people faint. Tightlacing, which was a reduction of the waist with a corset, was not a common practice. Also, corsets and stays are more comfortable than the modern day bra, because they provide support not only by a measly little stap but by supporting the whole back and chest area.
If your bras are only supporting you by the straps you need a smaller band and likely also a bigger cupsize, most of the support comes from the band, not the straps... bras aren't uncomfortable, most people just wear the wrong size
wendy!! could you do a video where you talk about the different sewing feet? foots? footing? you know what i mean! im beginning sewing and i got handed down a bunch of different feet and have no idea what they're for! luv your content
Wendy: "not to be confused with the types of corset that make you faint from shortness of breath"

Same same. I was like hold up girl! First of all☝🏾

I love how our community has been brought together by Wendy, Bernadette, Micharah, and Karolina. We are becoming a family!
I’ve followed Bernadette and Karolina for a while but I’ve just now learned about Wendy and Micarah. What have I missed out on?
Jenna pls watch micarah oml
@@jenny9139 Micarah is amazing! The perfect mix between fun and educational!
OMG I only follow Micharah and Wendy pls link me to these other women!

omg zip ties as boning. BRILLIANT
This looks so much like the modern version of the bust bodice that Bernadette Banner just did a historical version of!
It was all I could think of during this! Love em both ❤️
Yes!
so true!
Haha omg totally my thought to!
I would’ve never thought of that myself 😂 watching this is inspiring me to keep going on my wedding dress too 💛
YOU GOT THIS SERA keep going with that dress!!!! 🙌🙌
@@withwendy thanks girl!!
I film some period tv shows sometimes and have to wear a historical corset and honestly it’s not bad at all! Doesn’t make you faint or give you stomach cramps like you’d think, and actually it gives you great posture to stop me from slouching around on set!
(But yeh also, am in love with this corset, amazing job!!!) ❤️
Corset top aside - girl, that blush is Working. For. You!
Wendy watches Micarah! Now I know that I'm under all the good influences

As a person who makes corsets!!! Here's some tips :)
Using bias tape for channels will save you so, so much time. Plus hand sewing will add stability and look beautiful
If you really wanna add that flare, look at historical corsets and see what boning channel patterns you like most.

Morgan Donner has a few corset videos but they are like historical corsets so maybe that’s not what you mean....
The channel lucy's corsetry has modern corset reviews as well as plenty of resources, I'd start there.
I know right? So weird but so interesting.. btw I sneeze like a 🐭🐭 so feel free to click on that kinky eye

Always amazed at how well you innovate especially with quarantine supplies! I am so impressed with the finished product, wow! I also love all the painting editing, so fun!
wowww wendy you just entered a new realm of sewing proud of you sis !!
Wow! That turned out super cute! Way to go on sticking with it and pushing through all of the doubt and mistakes -- as you say, sometimes you just have to do it and then learn from there! I love the montage at the end, lol. Great job!! 😘
the aesthetics, editing, voicing, shots, everything is all so great 🥰
Corsets are like the staple pieces of 2020 and yours looks great!!!😍😍😍
This video was edited so beautifully omg
Her voice is soo soothing omg
i want to thank you wendy because I am trying to find a way to make a corset for my prom dress.
Bernadette is my queen.
Just loveeeeddd the mood description thinggggg
I'm making a corset right now! I love the historical inspiration you took for this project, it turned out amazing!
Woooooooow! I thought the flesh tone lining was a great idea and added a higher quality to the garment. Awesome! 💕
Loved the video AND the corset top (I really want to try this)
I think if you add just one layer of fusing you will enhance the quality and structure up a notch, your corset looks so beautiful, also fuse the ends of the zip ties so they can be soft, thank you so much this really helped alot
She just has the best vibes 🌟🌟
Wendy, I really enjoyed your black shirt with the brown splat marks and the orange/white tie dye printed shirt!
"i saw micarah tewers do it and that made me believe i could do it too" is the most relatable thing i've ever heard
perfect timing, I JUST started making a corset top last night
Your editing style has gotten a lot more creative and engaging. I really like it.
So cute!! I love it over another shirt as well - maybe over a black shirt to make it pop? But the white is cute. Good job!
This week I tried making a corset style top too but didn't know what to use for the boning and as soon as i saw you use zip ties I got super happy because now I can finish my project!
yes yes yes I love Micarah!! love how this turned out
Lol!!!!! The last portrait "painting" of you was hilarious. That hair style 😩😂😂.
Loved the corset top. I did not even notice dart being next to, instead of under, the boning channel until it was mentioned. A ragged seam would detract from the garment's appearance, but a well made dart adds to the garment's unique style.
it honestly turned out really really nice!!
Wendy this looks beautiful I’m defo trying this myself. Don’t be discouraged about peoples comment on historical corsets and whether it a bodice or corset no body asked so shut up . People are obsessed about proving good youtuber a wrong and bringing them down. This is Wendy’s take on A CORSET TOP she worked hard on if you don’t like it MOVE ON!
loved the editing on this!! the finished product turned out soo good (as always) :o
a loop turner is also a seamstresses best friend for flipping skinny straps! They saved me in my production sewing classes.
Hello Wendy, wishing you a great day and thanks for making mine a little bit better
The sample fabric was beautiful!
Looks gorgeous! And I loooove the pictures where you edited yourself in medieval frames :)
End result is poppin✨
How is someone this talented
she really can DIY it!!
So cute! The zip ties are genius!
wow. I wasn't sure where this was gonna go but you totally killed it.
I love it, and if you put the string in the back you can adjust it to your body and when it expands or decreases.
I would say that it is more of a bustier.
If your bras are only supporting you by the straps you need a smaller band and likely also a bigger cupsize, most of the support comes from the band, not the straps... bras aren't uncomfortable, most people just wear the wrong size
The things with the zip ties is genius!
wendy!! could you do a video where you talk about the different sewing feet? foots? footing? you know what i mean! im beginning sewing and i got handed down a bunch of different feet and have no idea what they're for! luv your content
Thank you thank you thank you ! !! I’ve been looking for a “tutorial” like this EVERYWHERE !!!
