No internet then. And I never had the gut or the cash to go in and ask for the price. One afternoon, when i was standing in front of the shop window again, a salesman came out of the door perhaps to light a cigarette. I thought, "I had to ask him the price. Its now or never". And that I did. He looked at me from head to toe and through my pockets. He replied, "EXPENSIVE "! ...Some 30 years later, the shop is no longer there. And as im writing this, im smiling at the watch now embracing my wrist. Guess what it is, folks. Time is on my side.
The Nautilus is what you cite to show watch hype is beyond all reason. A perfectly fine but unremarkable watch that goes for completely absurd amounts on the secondary market.
I deeply disagree that it is unremarkable, and could go on tirade writing words on words to defend that stance but I won't. Because at the end of the day, it's still a hype monster that goes for a ridiculous amount of money. Absurdity at its finest.

PP did a great job in preventing the Nautilus from drowning their image and destroying the rest of their heritage, like what happened with AP. Hell, Rolex is nothing but a sports watch maker. The Celini is completely forgotten and probably not a line anyone will recognize as Rolex.
Yep, you're 100% correct. They're not idiots at PP..they saw the writing on the wall. People only want Nautilus and little else. No matter how much AP tries to distance itself from the Royal Oak it's one blunder after another, at the end of the day 80-90% of their income still comes from the RoyalOak.
I remember as a mid-teenage walking into a PP dealership and just casually being handed an $80K PP (1980s money) to hold and look at. I was flattered at the trust, but handed it right back.

My favourite Patek is the 5205 in white gold. It has the most attractive shape and a practical annual calendar. The price is also something I can aim for within a decade.
I consider myself especially lucky in that I don’t like or want a Nautilus. A Calatrava for simple bespoke elegance, sure. But the case design of the Nautilus does nothing for me . . .

This was a really interesting video. I didn’t know Patek made electronic clocks. This is a real area of interest for me. I love horology and work in tech and we are going to sub 10ns network jitter with some of our ptp timing systems. It is great when a personal love and work collide.

The Nautilus is all that is boring about 70’s industrial design. The fact that it’s still sells as well as it does at the price it does is a testament to the sad truth that having lots of cash doesn’t mean you an equal amount of taste.
I definitely believe there are people who can pull them off, but stylistically, a guy wearing a champion crew neck suits this watch better than anything anyone who can afford it will wear

At least the top man at PP checks out the completed minute repeaters allowing the watch maker to make them first hopefully without interference. I'm certainly a fan of the elegant Calatrava in preference to the Nautilus and would love to own one someday.

You can see why it took Genta 5 mins to design the Nautilus. It's so basic, and pretty hideous in my opinion. The horizontal lines across the dial, the ugly hands, the neither here nor there case shape. I won't go down the price route here, thats a let down of its own, but on pure aesthetic form, this is sub par.
I always hated the case design and the very lazy integration of the indices and dial geometry... like someone took parts from two watches and were forced to use them together. Just ugly.
Especially that cheaply integrated date window. It looks like they cut that out at the last moment. Not framing it, not even matching the dial color. It’s an extremely cheap looking watch. With cheap I also mean its personality.

Maybe it’s because I can’t afford to spend $100k on a timepiece, but I don’t believe any watch is worth $100k, other than, perhaps that is made out of a precious metal and becrusted with diamonds. I genuinely appreciate and admire Patek and find its movements gorgeous, but I don’t believe they are worth anywhere near $100,000. Of course, many people obviously disagree because the market supports that price. But at more than 50% the price I paid for my house, I don’t see it. I’d love to see a video that actually explains why they are worth the price.
You must think iced out watches are worth 100K. Supply and demand, material, mechanics, and name is what gives a patek its price. Don’t be brainwashed by the highly manipulated diamond market they aren’t expensive
Patek is producing 65k watches a year, officially, but I honestly think they are making more, 75k+. It's a mass produced brand, just like Louis Vuitton. If you want something unique and of better quality you have to looks elsewhere, like FP Journe or many independents. Honestly Nautilus is ugly. I had 4 of them and sold them all. Royal Oak looks and feels so much better.
I think Patek will be releasing more complications and calatravas in steel now they’ve dropped the 5711. Unless they’ve got a whole new model up their sleeve. Watches and Wonders 2022 should be interesting.

Patek Philippe is/was one of those brands that I just don't give a shit about. The Nautilus bores me, as does the Aquanaut. Their dress watches aren't for me, as I'd rather have a Lange. What they make is beautiful, but I just don't WANT one. Like a supercar that leaves you cold (McLaren circa 2011). Until I saw the 5960 featured here. Good God. That is the ONE watch that PP makes that I actually desire, and it's probably gone out of production. Oh well
