Maybe it’s because the government’s in the last 25yrs increased immigration by over 10million, people asked and voted for this to stop including some immigrants themselves. Instead of actually listening and doing what people want they increased he numbers even more rapidly. It is not victim mentality to understand and live with problems because we’ve gone from around 30-50k a year that we could house, help assimilate and provide services and infrastructure for. As those numbers rose to half a million plus a year extremely rapidly to now over a million a year people have just been labeled far right and racists to shut them up.

Just because Britain is a bunch of islands, that does mean it can cut itself off from the rest of the world. We have to deal with this. People come here partly because: Tories created a deregulated gig economy where anyone can work for less than minimum wage; because of the Empire (Tories love) which always brings people to the mother country; and because they can link up with their ethnic communities here, invited over by Enoch Powell, Tory Home Secretary in '60's to do the jobs Brits did not want.

Zoe ... I really admire you for the work that you do. I don't think I could go into the right-wing nonsense about immigration without ending up with total despair and depression.
Hi Zoe. Secondly- Why are you implying the French army would have to police their Atlantic coast? The English channel is less than 1000km, most of which is not conducive to small boat crossings so for you to mention Frances` entire coastline is disingenuous and smacks of desperation on your part.
LOL yes, you're soo right. This absolutely destroys my argument. Just ignore the fact that the current most used marine route to Europe employed by refugees is the Atlantic route to Spain. Every time that statistics are made on criminality of native born citizens vs refugees the refugees have the lower criminal rate. And that's logical: If you fled the type of persecution that would likely end with stoning or inhumane prisons for the rest of your life then you have a very, very good reason to avoid *anything* that might result in your refugee status being revoked. Such as can happen if you get sentenced for a crime of significant severity. Immigrants also commit fewer crimes than native citizens, again it makes sense seeing as they can be deported unlike a native born citizen. I remember hearing nonsense about immigrants causing violent crimes towards women (you knot the type) in Sweden and went to the actual Swedish police statistics. Turned out it was a half-truth, there was an uptick in those type of crimes, but the victim group that increased were the immigrant women themselves. I'll leave it up to the reader to determine if that meant that the hateful group that attacks immigrants committed those crimes, and then pointed at the statistics that they themselves created as a reason to hate immigrants…

Not really, no. I think looking through history & around the world it’s quite evident that people are radicalised by lots of factors in different ways and there is nothing particular about Islam itself that produces that. What we need are strong civic institutions that protect our equal rights and our democracy - things like the Human rights act & ECHR that allow groups like women, elderly & lgbt to enforce their rights. Ironically these are the things under attack from the same people telling us Muslims are the threat 🤔

Zoe, so very well said. The orthodoxy of the two far/right parties is that immigration starts at Calais and that somehow things like drowning refugees, towing them back to France, setting the Royal Navy/Marines on them will be a deterrent, when many migrants will have walked thousands of miles to arrive at Calais through war, famine and great danger. It's tragic that the Brandt Commission looked at this growing issue 45 years ago and proposed solutions which even now have not been implemented. Clearly the 2 far/right parties and apologists for hate like Goodwin see this as a wedge issue and have no actual interest in resolving what will be a growing issue as crops continue to fail in Africa and war continues unabated.
@RobertTaylor-gz2fu sorry Robert, parties like RefUK that have advocated letting migrants drown, the #FarageRiots, taking us out of Churchill's ECHR and various other insanities are very definitely far right.
This issue, and it's associated issues, carries no nuance, no complication and, despite the attempts of many is not about culture, religion, tradition et al. It's ultimately a question of sustainability. Gardner seems to advocate that anyone who claims to be escaping persecution should be allowed to live in the UK regardless of how they got here. Farage and his ilk argue that no one should. Therefore it's a question of numbers, as in how many. A question that never really seems to be asked or answered. There has to be a limit because clearly Britain cannot allow millions to come and settle here. Conversly, it's true we need certain skills to maintain our economy that indigineous people can't, or won't, learn. There are some jobs British people clearly don't want to do anymore and that is a societal shift as much as anything. Basically, over the last twenty years there has been a dearth of what I'd call 'grown-ups' in our politics. People like Churchill, Benn, Hesletine, Bevan and suchlike: people not driven by dogma, image or celebrity or the concerns of the next five minute news round but people able to confront an issue and deal with it reasonably and in line with the majority of people's wishes. It's perfectly acceptable, despite the claims of Gardner, for some people to say enough is enough. It's not about implied racism, their cultural concerns or their bigotry. It's simply a question of how many.
The UK is bound by international agreements, treaties, conventions, etc with regard to people seeking asylum or refugee status. How do you set the number applying? Before saying there should be a cap, after which they should be turned away, please refer back to the first paragraph above.
You're conflating our need for more working-age adults and our obligation to offer asylum to refugees. There's a small overlap, but they're different issues.
@@Cudbeorht There are no agreements, treaties, conventions applying to refugees etc that the UK can't leave. Most of them were written and signed decades ago and are no longer fit for purpose. Indeed the treaties regarding the EU were all nullified by Brexit. It's people like you and Gardner who hide behind these treaties/agreements and say, 'Jeez, there's nothing we can do'. But there is. Really admire your work, as sisyphean as it may seem. Unfortunately a lot of this angst around immigration is a deflection of fears around deindustrialisation, the collapse of the working class and a feeling of becoming 'surplus'. Rather than question the capitalist economics underpinning their lives, some seek a quick libidinal affect engagement to assuage their fear of becoming, in fact, like the migrant themselves (exposed to precarity/abjection). I wrote my MA thesis in Migration on this and the tricky thing for policy folks is that the actual catalyst and driver of this nativism is so broad that pointing to any semblance of a 'solution' is facile... dark timeline.
This is absolutely it. People have been given an economic system that doesn't work - that creates intense materialism but leaves us feeling alienated and purposeless. Then we're fed a scapegoat. It's all too easy to see when you zoom out, but I can understand that real and deep frustrations are the fuel these racist lies depend on.
De-industrialisation has gone hand-in-hand with globalism. How can a UK company make sewing needles when I can get two sent from China in a week for around a quid? My adulthood started in the '70s, working in factories all around the country. Gradually, they were phased out under pressure of competition from cheaper suppliers overseas.
So you would leave your wife and kids in a war torn country. Why you pay 3 to 6 thousand pounds .right not enough houses so zoe where do we put them all . Why don't you go across zoe to help them
Migration discourse, along with every other “hot topic” in the UK is just a smoke screen to detract people from talking about the banks and what they are doing to expand the wealth gap; unless people are talking about that, it’s safe to assume they are attention seeking 👍🏻
They have been refurbished to “maximise capacity” so even ones that weren’t already run down have every room filled with beds and no amenities whatsoever. This isn’t a week long stay, this is where people are forced to live, for months, even years, with nowhere to go nothing to do, no work, no education. Use the imagination you have to reconsider if this actually constitutes some kind of preferential treatment.
If they can't pay- they can't stay. Temporary means NOT Permanent. If you don't have the documentation required to make a Claim then you don't qualify. If you refuse to integrate in the UK and cannot contribute to communities- then you do not qualify to remain. All of these were established UK Immigration Laws- until the EU...
Much as your simplistic logic is compelling, it doesn't confront the reality of people's lives. Human life is just a bit more messy and sometimes when rules are ridiculously over restrictive their only impact is to create people forced outside of them. It would be more sensible to run an immigration system fit for reality.
@@zoegardner9540 And this is the problem. Too much of political narrative is right-wing, anti-immigrant messaging. Campaigning via headlines and tweets and short 3-minute extracts on TV. As a city-dweller, you're blissfully unaware of the damage being done in rural areas that cannot absorb the numbers you want to bring in- and for every 1000 in a city- has the impact of 5000 to smaller communities- with lasting damage that is unsustainable! Cities accept multiculturalism- but smaller communities cannot survive them! And this is what you advocate and represent. For every one of you- there are 500 like me (if not more). As an Woke Activist- you don't get to vilify us as Empire Builders and Colonisers- then turn around and expect us to 'save' the world from problems they've created for themselves- it doesn't work that way. Thanks mate. I wish it was people with my views that actually had the run of the conversation like he claims, but his views are much more monetisable, sadly.
@zoegardner9540 The "monetisation" bit is everything that's wrong with 90-odd percent of our print and broadcast media. And it plays to an audience who alll too frequently want to lazily lap up the salacious stuff rather than put in the work to uncover facts (you know this). We desperately need leaders who'll fight this, because we only need to look across the ocean to see were it leads. There is hope, but often the glimmers are all too faint.
I think we can all recognise that successive governments have mishandled both illegal and legal migration. Also, the charge of xenophobia or rasism is used as a stick with which to beat a rather large portion of the population who see the cultural shifts happening within the country due to mass immigration and perceive it as an existential threat. Constantly papering over the cracks in the system plays into the hands of those who would seek to use it as a wedge issue. Perhaps treating the issue of illegal immigration as a convenient psy-op by large corporations is also a little patronising to the people who see and feel the changes wrought by demographic change, too. Plenty of corporations are making bank through the migrant crisis, also, so your point falls flat there. To my mind, the only sensible approach would be to have a moritorium on all forms of immigration for a long enough period to perhaps put a functioning immigration service together that isn't just rubber stamping applications due to being constantly overwhelmed. I think most people will always be in favour of a reasonable level of immigration if they can see it is being managed well and truly reflects the needs and desires of the population.
The numbers of asylum seekers entering Britain by irregular means is a drop in the ocean compared to the 650,000 welcomed in Britain from Hong Kong and China over the past year alone.
@007JHS which makes that added welfare burden of illegal migrants all the more galling. And, frankly, illegals would be less of an issue if legal migration were for far lower. A moratorium on both would allow the country to objectively assess the merits of continuing both. Until that happens, the government will continue to fail horribly at both and make the corporations even richer. Just setting an upper limit would be a start! I fear that by the time those sympathetic to both illegal and legal migration see a problem on the horizon it will be too late. 'too late for what?' I hear you ask: too late to any more feel something other than a stranger in my own country. How many Londoners were told it wasn't happening 30 years ago?

There are no far-right parties in the UK Parliament.
@RobertTaylor-gz2fu sorry Robert, parties like RefUK that have advocated letting migrants drown, the #FarageRiots, taking us out of Churchill's ECHR and various other insanities are very definitely far right.

You're welcome to suggest better deterrents.
@@zoegardner9540 It can be improved a lot. Poland is doing much better at its border with Belarus.

And white people are being attacked every day.
So you would leave your wife and kids in a war torn country. Why you pay 3 to 6 thousand pounds .right not enough houses so zoe where do we put them all . Why don't you go across zoe to help them
You would put your wife and kids on one of those boats, would you?
Migration discourse, along with every other “hot topic” in the UK is just a smoke screen to detract people from talking about the banks and what they are doing to expand the wealth gap; unless people are talking about that, it’s safe to assume they are attention seeking 👍🏻
Very much this
@18:56 Some accommodation is grotty old Britannia hotels, enriching non-dom Alex Langsam; some are in Holiday Inns which are not cheap/poor.
@@zoegardner9540 but its not on the street living or in camps tho is it

Supported by the rise of "political commentators" who are emboldened to spread their vile right-wing hysteria as though it is valid political commentary.
@@zoegardner9540 How's this for simplistic- Sovereign Countries have laws (And some of those you fight for are even more repressive and still instilled in the very people coming here illegally). Those laws are still on the books and it's irrelevant whether or not they're presently enforced- they're still there.

I'm in awe at the coherence of your delivery here - absolutely shredding his pathetic piece. I wish it was more of you appearing on our screens, not him. Our country needs to rediscover a love of experts.
Well said!

@3:16 Irregular vs Illegal: From the perspective of a working class potential reform voter, this is illegal in that it is smuggling - circumventing border authorities. It is one of many causes of the perception of two tier justice which ultimately undermines the rule of law and lack of respect for 'elite' authorities.
If we make breathing illegal then we’d all be criminals. It is pointless to make something that is necessary illegal unless your purpose is not to stop it but to create the people forced to circumvent it in order to then point the finger at them and blame them for people’s struggles.
Asylum seekers are not circumventing the rules because they declare at port.
