How Colonialism Set the Stage for Maui's Destruction by Fire

  • The death toll from the Maui wildfires is now about 100 and is expected to continue to climb in what is now the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century and the worst natural disaster in Hawaii's history. As recovery efforts continue, many residents are asking why Hawaii's early warning system, with about 80 alarms on the island of Maui alone, did not get activated to alert residents about the approaching flames. We speak with Kaleikoa Kaeo, professor of Hawaiian studies at the University of Hawaii Maui College, who gives a history of colonialism in Maui and how the transformation of the island for mass tourism, such as changes to agriculture and water management practices, helped to turn the area into a tinderbox. "Our people who have lived there since time immemorial are suffering because of the consequences that have been imposed really from outside foreign forces," says Kaeo.

Wild fires are usually in the wild. The forest. This was a town, with no forest surrounding it. This is not a wild fire. This is suspicious.

They have heat weapons. They were used on the protestors in Australia during Covid.
They had big blisters and sores on their bodies and faces. They could easily start fires.
But even a match would do it.

On the video, it appears to show a single block along the coastline burned to the ground. EXACTLY 1 block along the ocean! I would have thought that Mexico would go before Hawaii.

Thats right! And the citizens of Lahina are already being approached by investment companies that want to buy their properties... Parasites have no shame. Not thinking about how they can help. Instead they're thinking about makin money off the devastation. Don't sell to them the dirt on your shoe. Do no business with these Parasites! They drive up housing costs leaving many locals homeless all over North America and Abroad.. They should be on blast for what they're doing and any involvement they have with these fires!
A woman that was there said many many many Hawaiian children were at home watching younger siblings with parents working when these attacks happened 💔 She was devastated by what she saw and broken.. She passed by so many people that didn't make it..
They are lying about the death toll.. The government was totally in on it imo.. A similar situation in the Yukon is happening right now(raging fires). I'll share link instead of trying to explain in comments..
I'm so so so sorry to the Beautiful People of Lahina that they're going through this devastation. My prayers are with the people of Lahina as they begin to process what has happened! And I pray for swift justice for the People! I don't understand why USA owns the Island when it belongs to the people of Hawaii! This government has done these things before. Aside from barging into countries and stealing everything they wanted, they stole the lives of countless souls. Starting wars based on pure and utter lies on lies and they know it's all lies! The royal family the Vatican and other sinister families and groups have orchestrated every war every invasion, endless devastation against humanity, & too many disasters to count.. Now they're turning on the USA Canada and beyond to gain control over the world! See while everyone else is busy being productive and living their lives, these parasites plot schemes lie and manipulate to get more more more of what ain't theirs.. They're never satisfied and so entitled! We've been funding their out of control lifestyles for way too long. We could __ the 1%, so 99% of humanity could live in peace! They want to depopulate us but it's them that need to be depopulate because they are the source of 99% of the problems humanity faces today.. They're unfit to live amongst the rest of society and need to be addressed.. If everyone got up tomorrow morning &stopped helping them impose their agendas on the world, it would all end by dinner time! Then we round them up and imprison them until their sentencing!! Just sick of seeing people suffer because of a few soulless psychopaths!! 💜🙏🏻🕊

For decades, Maui residents have been fighting to preserve this ancient seat of the kingdom of Hawaii. Just last month, the Hawaiian government passed a law that the Lahaina historical area could not be redistricted for any more development of hotels and such businesses, unless a natural disaster occurred. What are the odds..?

Why should native Hawaiians , rebuild there, only for it, to possibly happen again. From the same people who started this disaster. They didn't care about humans lives. And you say this area was , part of America, now I see why. Because America doesn't care about it's citizens. The leaders and politicians, are only concerned about the rich like themselves. Nobody can buy a square metre of Lahaina. This city belongs to the native people who lived there for generations.
The government needs to rebuild the city exactly as it was. No cost for the people who lost their homes.
Just give them back the city and rebuild every house as it was for the last hundred years.
Better burn down the mansions of Jeff Bezos and Oprah Winfrey.
They have enough mansions all over the world and they shall stay away from Lahaina.

Before I heard any mention about colonialism, I thought about Australia and the scorched earth there. I remembered an indigenous person commenting that indigenous people knew how to control the spread of fires to prevent catastrophic fires, but that colonial encroachment had changed the dynamics regarding harmony with nature. One of the first comments mentioned by reporters is that the Maui fire is the "worst disaster in Hawaii's history." Presented another way, even when the island was thick with foliage and forest before "urban" development, there were no fires that devastated the island. The indigenous Hawaiians had the same understanding of nature that the indigenous Australians possessed, but colonialism altered the dynamics because it's predicated upon a lack of respect for the people and the land.

People should know that In Hawaii on the first Tuesday of the month there is a testing of the emergency warning sirens. Hawaii doesn’t have a wild fire warning siren. There is 4 siren alarms and each one is a different sound for the specific impending danger to be warned of. But I think anyone of those sirens could still be set off because people will pay attention to sirens going off during a time of day where they aren’t being tested. I think for as big as the fire was, cars exploding and the amount of smoke engulfing the streets people would get a clue that it’s time to run. Law enforcement was on the scene on loud speakers telling the people in their homes and businesses to evacuate. I’m saying you don’t need the state of Hawaii to set off alarms! Just grab your family and go!!

Look, having a relaxed outlook on life in nice. It helps people live a low stress life. We all want that. But if you ignore things because they are too much work for you to deal with and don't care about safety, disasters can happen. This was a freak occurrence, to be sure. So let's learn from it. I heard a story from a local that was running from the fire with her neighbor & the fire was moving a block in less than 15 seconds. Unfortunately, she lost her neighbor while running & she barely made it by jumping over the wall into the ocean. She was in the water for 7+ hours & she would feel hypothermic, so she would move closer to the fire to warm up but then her body would begin to burn from the heat of the fire. There are hundreds of stories like this. I'm sending Lahaina all my love & prayers. Ke hoʻouna aku nei au i koʻu aloha a me nā pule.🙏 Lahaina will never be the same. 💔

Utility lines, that's how Thomas fire in Ventura CA started, spread by Santa Ana winds (60-80 mph gusts) in a drought condition. Water hydrants failed. Cell service dropped so evac alerts were not delivered. The fire traveled from Santa Paula to Ventura in just over an hour. Non native trees and plants fueled the fire. Our native oak and manzanita smoulder but don't ignite, but the imported eucalyptus and palm trees exploded like a wooden matchstick. So many similarities. Apart from the death toll.
We as a country aren't prepared for wildfire disasters.

@@sharoncrider7444Is FL subject to drought conditions? I don't know much about the terrain. We have miles of dry grass, scrub brush, non native trees, so there was plenty of fuel. Power lines provided the spark. Nature provided the oxygen as hot, dry, high winds.
FL may not have the same need for power downing. We now have power downs whenever winds reach over a certain speed. It's a bit too late though.

Yes you are so correct. With everything that is happening we must as citizens be proactive in the planning and execution of emergency procedures. I live in Hawaii, I’ve lived in Lahaina. I have immense sympathy for this community. However, the sirens would not have made a difference as the fire moved too fast. With hurricanes and, tsunamis, and earthquakes give us some warning, some time where the sirens help but with a fast moving fire all the sirens in the world would not have helped much. I wish they would quit focusing on the siren when they KNOW it wouldn’t have made a difference. And, by experience, I have witnessed too many locals ignore the sirens during hurricane warnings. They have the attitude “ it’s gonna pass” . Makes me really doubt anything would’ve changed. Stop trying to blame something no one could’ve done anything to stop it at that time on people or agencies that couldn’t have known what was to happen. Stop with the sirens. With so much devastation the lack of preparedness is also the fault of the citizens. Since Hurricane Iwa , I have kept emergency rations and readiness plans in tact. I take it seriously, unfortunately, so many in Hawaii have the attitude, “it won’t happen to us.” This is a devastating wake up call that it CAN happen to us and it shows us how unprepared we ALL are.

We as humans can always do better. Everything, every "disaster" should be evaluated with a fine comb. Your defeatist attitude will not help progress. Also you could see the fire make its way through a giant farmland to the town. There was plenty of time for the sirens and if the sirens wouldnt help, what are they for? A simple siren while the fire was in the farmland with wind direction giving a obvious path of the fire, a siren wouldve help save at least one life. Maybe you could explain to everyone why its ok no sirens went off and that the power was left on so fire fighters cant get to areas needed and also possibly not create more fires since it was SO windy. Also, where was the head of Maui emergency response team? out of town, I answered for you, so the second in command then, out of town too, there I got that for you too. There was a obvious lack of preparedness and compitence that led to loss of life. Yes it was a horrible fire with bad winds on dry conditions but that fire didnt start in Lahiana, it still took a lot of time to get through the fields and into the town. Please dont work for a emergency response team.

Fire can move so quickly for certain. The sirens would have helped people make decisions more quickly no matter the situation on the ground. It wouldn’t have helped the fire stoppage- it definitely helps let people know to move NOW. All so sad. My hope is those who’ve made so much money on the backs of the people there do the right things form a bit of their profits.

I'm so sorry! But as a retired firefighter that spent most of my time fighting big big brush fires. We went into the mouth of the beast and put them out we protected big homes on the edges of these large woods full of lots of dead underlying brush compiled over many years. These fires burned Very very hot..
To create a good hot fire you must have fuel to burn . That is a must above all. Then you need good oxygen which all fires in the open have . And you need something to ignite it which is evident .
When i look at the arial footage from the plane in this video. You see at the base of the mountains where it started and burned across the grassy plain to the first course of homes furthest from the ocean. Knee high grass fires are not going to produce enough fuel, and temps that created the metal melting inferno this thing turned into.. Something besides this grass fire was being used to feed these flames into a ragging inferno. As you get into neighborhoods with walls and decorative plants and shrubs around the property. It will burn but not what you need to produce this fire. On front Street theres a two story building with asphalt parking lotat least 60 ft wide al around the building with no brush or fuel source of any kind. The metal structural I beams were heated to temps over 2000 degrees to twist and disfigure them . Theres no fuel anywhere around to create these temps. Something else was in play here people. Also no water to the hydrants!! Are you kidding me!! Even after the fire chief is screaming for water. Id lock everyone involved in this fire up immediatly until there story could prove them as innocent of crimes Against humanity. Streets and all exits were blocked off to hwy and other routes out to trap people in there to be sacrafied. Police were replying when asked why they were blocking exit routes! They replied!! Just following orders. This was a planned attack on this land. I dont care what any official said otherwise. Then to see the laws that protected this land be removed so no claims would have to be paid by insurance companies. No rebuilding permits would be issued. Its a huge issue taking place.. Im sorry to say these things . But as a firefighter i can express my opinion as a comparison to what ive experienced and seen. This grass fire could of very easily been stopped way before it came close to any homes. Weve done it numerous times as a firefighter. God be with us all in getting the truth out for all to witness..

We Hawaiians can't stand new zealanders. We hate NZ more than the fire. Stay on your side of the ocean. Seriously. You made me angry just thinking about NZ.

A Hugh tragedy, however, Maui, Lahaina has become one of the most expensive places in Hawaii to live, as the locals are being priced out by wealthy investors, sadly !!

Saying Colonialism set the stage for this to happen is like saying colonialism is to blame for any disaster that happens on the mainland. All of the land was stolen from someone at a certain point, so it's weak at best. I think the focus should be on how the current local government failed AND it's current attempt to do a land grab, stealing more land through eminent domain.

If you listened to the video it talks about how policies like monoculture and diverting streams dried up the land and made it more flammable.

Agreed. The true goal of that title is to say blame white people.

They said that the warning sirens were not activated because everyone knows those sirens are for tsunamis. That would've signaled people to move further inland and into the fire. It was better for people to move towards the shore, not away from it. So unfortunately, there are sirens that signal people to move deeper inland, but no way to warn people that they need to move closer to the shore. That makes sense as to why the sirens were not activated. They say many children were burned to death. 😥 This is the most painful way to die. Those sweet little babies. Why??? I pray for the people of Hawaii. I pray for children suffering around the world. Heavenly Father, this world needs your intervention Most High, Lord God, YHWH. 🙏
