Thank you for watching Palmer! 😂😂😂 To tell you the truth, I was a listless student (a lot), especially in literature, but I liked to read. My professors hated me precisely because I preferred Ken Follett novels to the books they assigned me. I'm glad you liked the video, I'm experimenting a bit with different formats, let's see what comes out 💚
I would LOVE more discussions about complex, layered characters! My favorite ones are always those who have a strong sense of right and wrong, WANT to do right, but...struggle, fail and are always wrestling with mixed motivations. Lovely video. I'm so excited to read Sun Eater after watching this. (And my brother has been BEGGING me to read The Expanse, so I need to do that too.)
Thank you for watching! Yes, I love this kind of discussion because it actually helps me to enjoy stories and characters more. By asking questions, and trying to peel off the layers, I truly get to see the emotional core of the whole narrative. I think it's incredibly fascinating stuff. You NEED to read the EXPANSE, but keep in mind it's a slow burner that keeps its cards really closer to the chest. Give it time, and it'll open up beautifully. Worldbuilding, politics, characters, action, it's all top notch. Same for the Sun Eater series. It's very different, much more operatic and melodramatic, but has big ideas, big action set pieces and a charismatic protagonist. It's up there on the top of my favorites!
Very mindful, very demure discussion 🤣 Lasagna characters are the best, tbh. I had to skip the EoS part because I'm hoping to read that one, but loved your analyses, tbh. A pet peeve of mine in this topic is in long series with a lot of characters (e.g., Halo, which I love), which build secondary characters slowly across books--and some readers are not very keen on that. There is also a degree of subjectivity, I think; I have seen people saying Charly (from Flowers from Algernon) is a poorly developed characters... and I disagree. That said, you were quite objective on pointing out the three ingredients for the perfect lasagna character. Food for thought, thank you Abel!
Thank you for watching my friend! And yes, I guess that everyone's mileage may vary about character development, and what characters must be considered "compelling". I hope you'll read Sun Eater soon!
Okay you know I love all your videos, but this different type of format was such a refreshing change-up and I think it might be one of my favourite videos you've done. What a wonderful exploration of this topic, and you made me even more excited to read all of these series for myself (especially Sun Eater)! I can't recall anymore if you have read Legacy of the Brightwash, but that is full of some of the most complicated characters. And Renia by Karl Forshaw shines in this aspect as well! Amazing video, Abel 🤩
Thank you for watching my friend. I'm happy this little experiment was a success, and I really loved having a chance to explore characters, stories and themes that I think are worth more space. I'll try to do more in the near future 🎉 I have Brigtwash and Reina on my bottomless wishlist, and now you're making me even more impatient to get to read them 😂😂😂😂 Definitely give Sun Eater a try. That series is getting bigger and bigger, and more popular by the day for good reason!
Curious, which one do you recommend to start first? The Expanse or Empire of Silence? Just saying this was a top notch lesson plan and deep diving on these characters.
Thank you for watching! A hard question 😂😂😂 I think both series have first books that are pretty different from the rest of the narration. Both Leviathan Wakes and Empire of Silence have a smaller scope and different tone if compared to the following books, which is understandable, long stories tend to take time to find their footing. I think Leviathan Wakes is more an accomplished Volume all and all. Because it wrapped most of the treads beautifully. The story gets better and better, it would be a crime to stop there tho. Empire of Silence is more dramatic and has BEAUTIFUL prose, aesthetics, atmosphere, and a main character who's absolutely captivating. It's slow too, and very much based on character exploration. It doesn't stand on his own fleets tho. It's just a huge prologue to the myth of Hadrian that comes in full fruition from book 2 onward. The rest of the sires is much more cinematic and bombastic. Funnily enough, everyone seems to think book one is the weakest, but I think they're all crazy because, in truth, it's a fantastic read
I loved this class, Professor Montero!! Very interesting.

Agreed - Kelsier was by far my favourite character in Mistborn
Such an unforgettable character!
Thank you for watching my friend 🫂
Love the Sun Eater series. I am halfway through book five at the moment. Hadrian is such a great character and I love how dramatic he is.
Thank you for watching!
You're absolutely right. I think Hadrian will be studied as a cornerstone of characterization 🔥

And I'll prioritise Sun Eater if you get onto Brightwash and Renia asap hahah 🤣🥰
@@esmayrosalyne I like this kind of blackmaill 😂😂😂
Holy cow! You put a lot of work into this video, Abel.
Very well done! :)
Thank you my friend, it was a lot of fun!

💚
I really need to stop slacking and start reading Sun Eater!

With this response, Empire of Silence sounds perfect for me right now. Thank you so much.
