'Vicariously watching these movies through you, is the closest I'll ever get to watching them for the first time again.'
Mathew, sir, that is the single most unique comment and outlook on movie viewing I have ever heard. Spoken like a true movie fan.
The appeal of watching reaction videos summed up in one line. And also you you are actually on Mars but had have been programmed to think your real memories are in a movie you watched for a reaction video about a movie about somebody who believes he is on Mars because he was programmed to think he was not experiencing a story about being somebody on Mars programmed to believe he wasn't on Mars.
I'm pretty sure I am really commenting on this but...
Very true statement. It's also true for certain video games. I'm very partial to the Myst series of games but the downside to them is that you can only play them once, then you know everything. Only way to get some of that fun back is watching someone else figure the puzzles out for themselves.
Unique comment... its literally the entire concept behind reaction channels. Its why their popular, we get to reexperience the joy of the film seeing it through someone elses eyes.
One of my favourite films is judge dredd kurt urban remake
I really do hate autocorrect KARL urban
I too would stand no chance against Sharon Stone. She's amazingly hot around this era.
Agreed, she is so remarkably sensual which makes the entire musculin men tremble down before her senseless.....
She was 33.
read this as the scene happened 😂
Surely the whole film was a dream!!
A lowly construction worker married to Sharon Stone?? Come on!! 😂
Yes I agree with you on that one
10:22 "Oh, he just Captain Kirk'ed that ho!" Good one! 😆
The lady has a dirty mind, and laughs at childish shit. I like it. :p
"What kind of drugs is this movie?"
"Verhoeven drugs."
Exactly.
You should add "True Lies" to your reaction list!
Best of Arnold's movie!
15:42 And people thought the whole 'Red Pill' thing started with the Matrix.
Matthew has it right.. The "fade to white" at the end shows Quade waking up at Rekall.. He got everything in the package. Saved the planet, got the girl, and the blue sky on Mars which the tech said was new just before they put him under... See, if you're dropped into a situation where you don't know anyone, you'll know it's a dream.. But if they take characters from your actual life and manipulate them, the mind believes it..
Don't worry about Richter, he's armless. 🤣
Kudos for watching the original (and proper) version the movie.
Fact: the voice actor for jonnycab is Robert Picardo whom is famous for his role as the emergency holographic doctor for Star Trek voyager
Small bit of trivia, the Johnnycab voice is Robert Picardo, AKA The Doctor from Star Trek Voyager
I love how the gun he has in the beginning of the movie never runs out of ammo.
If she hasn't seen twister yet she would love that one
What I love most about this movie is when you watch the DVD commentary and might expect some deeper insight into the philosophical aspects of it all, and then it's just Arnold describing what happens on screen. "Here I beat up all these people." "Here I shoot my wife right in the head. Hahaha!" etc. with a thick Austrian accent.
That's the most Ahnuld thing ever!
Better than a JJ Abrams commentary. Every scene is his favorite scene.
Verhoeven has a lot of glass breaking in robocop so she's kind of right lol
"Okay, Benny's my new favorite!" =D
Spongebob narrator: " _6 minutes later_ "
"I *hate* you, Benny." >=(
_snickers_
Don't blame Benny, he had 5 kids to feed
@@JohnSmith-qn3ob One didn't make it. So sad.
Top ten anime betrayals
The director has said it can be either a dream or not a dream, it works either way.
I remember hearing somehwere that he said as far as the “it’s all a dream” scenario, the white light at the end when Quaid and Melina kiss is Quaid getting lobotomized
Sharon Stone was insanely hot at this point. Growing up I never knew she was from about a half hour north of us here in PA. For being such an old movie the effects really hold up well, proves practical works over cgi any day.
Tony, the messed up face guy, that's Dean Norris, Hank from Breaking Bad. He's also in another Verhoeven flick, Starship Troopers as is Ironsides. Peter also used Ronny Cox in both this and Robocop.
I love this movie and how ambiguous it is with its ending. On one side you could say it was all real and he did save the day, on the other you could say it was all a recall ego trip.
Personally I feel it’s the latter. The fact at recall he makes a choice of Mars, to be a secret agent who gets the girl and saves the planet, the tech looking at the ego trip and saying “blue sky on Mars”, the Martian art they show him has a picture of the oxygen machine and finally when choosing the girl on the computer the picture of Melina is on the screen. That leads me to believe that once he went under everything from that point was the recall.
That then leaves two more possible endings. One is the happy ending where this all is a normal trip and once it is over the screen fills with white light and he wakes up from his recall. The other is the bad ending, the doc brought in supposedly to trick him was actually legit, that there was a problem with the recall and that was his way out, he doesn’t take the way out that the bright light at the end was him being lobotomized.
imagine if that was just his ego trip and he had to go back to his normal life with his wife, he'd never be able to look at her the same.
i think it wasn't a dream though, we saw a suspicious look from lori when he left for work after going on about moving to mars, harry gave a suspicious look when he mentioned recall, both of which happened before he even went to recall, those suspicious looks kinda give away that they both worked for the agency. and recall doesn't know harry or lori, so how would they be part of his trip? and the fact that doug dreamed about mars and melina frequently makes me think it must be real, definitely one hell of a coincidence though.
Yep, I think they put an ice pick to Arnie’s brain at the end as it was absolutely fried from his wild adventure.
Funny how NO BODY NOTICES THE RED PILL
During the implantation scene, in addition to mentioning a blue sky on Mars, the pictures of the woman he chooses is Melina, and when they are flipping through pictures of Mars, the last picture before they pan away is one of the reactor.
1) I absolutely LOVE your laugh, Emily.
2) Some suggestions for further reviews:
* Predator
* Lethal Weapon
* Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the original, with Donald Sutherland)
* The Lost Boys
* They Live
* Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
* Jaws
* Wargames
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Donald Sutherland) is actually a remake from 1978
The best tho, IMO
I was too young to see this in the theatre, but old enough to read the novelization by Piers Anthony. Another good Philip K. Dick movie is Minority Report with Tom Cruise, directed by Steven Spielberg.
"Tony, no!"
"Run, Benny"
"Benny, what the fuck, man!"
"I hate you, Benny"
"You could go fuck off. Ya, girl"
Singing "Glass!"
She is so precious.
The commentary track by Arnold on this movie in infamous and maybe one of the best commentary tracks on any movie... lol
I used to watch a fair amount of reaction channels, and you both are by far one of the few I’ve seen that are really genuine in your reactions. Subbed!
Fun fact. The guy who's in Last Resort bar, the one with the fooked up face and helps them escape is the Brother in law, Hank, in Breaking Bad.
Watch “Spies Like Us”!
Time for Predator 1987, of course. Strongest film ever made.
Guess you'll have to watch The Running Man.
I believe the director himself has said everything after Quaid shuts his eyes in the Rekall machine is the dream vacation he paid for, and on a careful viewing that's what's indicated. The question of the film isn't 'Was it real or a dream?', rather the question of the film was 'If you can have a dream so real you can't tell the difference would you choose the dream or reality, and how could you tell the difference?'
He was unconscious for the discussion between the Rekall people about not having implanted the secret agent persona and about dumping him somewhere. That scene doesn't make sense if the whole thing was a memory implant.
@@benkelly2024 There are also lots of scenes that don't involve him, like the villains talking to each other.
@@benkelly2024 If it's a dream it doesn't matter if he's "asleep" or not.
Ah, Paul Verhoeven. I think "over the top" is a pretty good summation of his work. So much so that even his satire flies over people's heads.
Next up "Starship Troopers"! Oh Yah.
If she hasn't seen them yet: Robocop and Starship Troopers.
*He got shot in the diiiiiick. He deserved it* Emily watching RoboCop
And of course…..
*THAT VAGINA BUG JUST CAPRI SUN’D THAT MAN!!!!!*
You can guess that one easy
please check out Kindergarten Cop or Twins. You get to see Arnold's comedic acting
Johnnycab (the robot taxi) is played by Robert Picardo. Best known as The Doctor/The EMH on Star Trek Voyager!
(And in 80s cinema for this, Gremlins 2 and Innerspace among more!)
I thought that Doctor looked like the Johnnie Cab.
But I never actually made the connection.
Saw this three times in the theater. Such a fun ride.
Great movie. I'm glad your seeing this and not the horrible remake. Two other great Arnold Swarchenegger films which I don't see on your list are The Running Man and Conan The Barbarian.
The late 80s early 90s mastered the art of the meathead movie that was actually smart. This one. Predator. Robocop, Terminator, Demolition Man. And the Master of the genre, They Live.
Universal Soldier. The Last Action Hero and True Lies I guess might also count.
I haven't seen Tango and Cash in ages so I can't say if it's smart.
This is based on a short story called "We Can Remember it For You Wholesale".
This was the first and only film of 1990 to win Best Visual Effects.
There is an hilarious reference to this movie in the Hot Shots Part Deux where Topper Harley is gunning down bad guys while a counter is keeping track with its video game sound effects. Topper passes none other than RoboCop then Total Recall to become the "Bloodiest movie of all time". The Hot Shots movies are a must see for more slapstick, sight gag hilarity...
Well, now you have to complete the Paul Verhoeven sci-fi trinity by watching Robocop and Starship Troopers.
Is what is happening to Quaid just a fantasy taking place in his head while he is strapped in a chair at Rekall? I was long resistant to the idea myself. But over the years, I've become persuaded that this is almost certainly the case. Even so, the film is sufficiently ambiguous that people can argue back-and-forth about it and never resolve the question absolutely.
"He just Captain Kirk that ho" has to be one of my favorite movie reaction quotes
I love how you worded that it's almost like you're watching it for the first time vicariously thru Emily watching it for the first time. That's how I feel as well watching it bit by bit with you guys. Thank you :)
Now don't watch the remake
Yes I agree 👍💯
They actually made a remake to this?? What’s it called, Total Recall Totally Recalled?
This has become my new favorite site. I love Emily's laugh, it infectious. :O) I'll make you two a deal. You keep making 'em, and I'll keep watching 'em.
@15:42 the red pill!! A decade before it’s most famous appearance in pop culture!!😉
You two have to review jingle All The Way for Christmas
I still remember my dad taking me to see this movie in theaters back in 90
"Benny! What the f___ Benny!!" Lol She had me laughing.
LMAO 'Hasta la vista, Lori' hahahaha
It was a dream, because just before Quaid fell asleep at Rekall, you can see Melina's face on the monitor. She was part of the experience, along with the alien stuff and blue sky on Mars.
If I remember correctly from listening to the commentary track several years ago, the director and Arnold prefer the interpretation of most of the movie being a memory implant, but it was left as an open question on purpose.
"Get ready for a surpriiiisse!!" 😂
That alone has to be the best scene in the whole movie ! The 'two weeks' moment right before is just so comical and odd, but the animatronics are impressive. I loved the entire scene with Quato, too.
"What kind of drugs is this movie?"
The best kind, lady.
14:37 This is why I subscribe to this channel. OK, not the only reason, but it's definitely the cherry on top.
Oh he just captain kirk’d that ho
😁🤣
So many levels why I love that
Also being a Star Trek fan annoyed I never saw that
I cannot express how much I love this movie.
I love her response to Melina getting 'fixed' is 'fu#k off!', I think I found a new movie reaction channel.
Days before endless cgi green screen. Love the insane creativity.
Fifth Element please.
Ironically The Fifth Element was the first big budget movie to employ large scale digital matte paintings, with forced perspective that actually moved with the camera and most of the flying cars in the movie were CGI, except for the close up practical model shots. They also used digital fog and digital compositing to join all the elements (no pun intended) together.
The Cruise Liner was also totally CG and the 3D DNA printer was the most complex scene to create at the time, it took almost 6 months just to render that!
“Better than unobtainium”. Awesome line!
That name was used in two movies Avatar and The Core
I heard the name is actually used as something in real life 🧐🧐🧐
BTW - it WAS a dream. The clues, as you say, "Blue skies on Mars," but also Melina's face is clearly shown on the Rekall screens before Quaid passes out (she may be in the commercial he sees on the train earlier too, but I haven't seen it in a while), and as they're flipping through the Martian alien images at Rekall, they show the Martian Reactor in a bit of concept art. When the guy comes in a tries to talk him down from having a schizoid embolism, he literally gives away the rest of the plot saying, "One minute, you'll be the hero of the resistance, the next, you'll be Cohagen's bosom buddy, but in the end, you'll be lobotomized!" And on top of that, Paul Verhoeven said so, lol. Great reaction/ review - I'm adding "Breasticle" to my vocabulary now - can't wait to see whatever's next!
Also, the "guy" just happened to be on the Rekall commercial shown on the train. I'm guessing his image was what Quayd associated with Rekall..
"if you're new to the channel..." it's a new channel so pretty much everyone is.
"Oh, he just Cap'n Kirked that ho." bwahahaha.
Loving this so much. \o/
"See you at the party, Richter!"
I always thought a great add on to that line would have been, "At least now I know you'll be UN ARMED!"
24:39
"....GLAAAAASSSS!!"
Perfect quip for Arnie.
Yeah Richter was pretty armless.
I know this is very late coming, but as a certified grammar nerd I cannot let this pass...
A synopsis is a brief outline of a story, and I'm certain the word you word striving for at 3:47. A synapse, the plural of which is synapses, the word actually used, is a connection in a neural network, connecting one neuron to another. As I write this I realize that may have been the joke, but the uncertainty and my own compulsions insist the clarification.
so when's Robocop, another great installment in the Verhoeven "broken glass" series coming up?
Awesome. This is my new goto. I luv the movies yall do & luv how much u enjoy them. Do a hundred more yall r great.😝
I'm guessing she's never heard of Paul Verhoeven before? lol.... Show her Robocop...
Dead or alive your coming with me.
We called this movie ‘total violence’ when it came out
Fun side fact from the novelization: the alien reactor was a test for humanity once space travel has been achieved. Passing the test not only terraforms the Martian atmosphere, it notifies the aliens that we're space capable and non-violent enough to join their community. Failure of the test (attempting to destroy the reactor) triggers the Sun to go nova. Those aliens don't fuck around with allowing warlike species with space travel technology.
Books? We don't read books here! Your on the wrong channel for that brain stuff!
I think we humans colonized Mars in the past.
You're right about the glass thing. How much gratuitous broken glass is in "Robocop"?
Of course there was always the question of whether it was a Recall or reality. There's arguments for both sides. That blue skys on Mars is a good argument, but I'm going to go with reality. Recall employees were talking about him after he was sedated. That wouldn't be a personal memory of his.
There have been cases where people under sedation for surgery have been able to repeat back things that the doctors said while the patient was unconscious so it's "possible" Quade heard them.
This was the first R rated movie I watched alone at the movie theater. I was ten. LoL
Same. I watched it in the theater with my Dad and uncle. We were all big fans of Arnold so we saw it. My mom was pissed when she found out lol.
HaD to be a dream. He described his dream woman and she shows up
20:30
It's nice to Dick Jones' golden parachute worked after he was let go from Omni Consumer Products.
Off the top of my head, movies from Philip K. Dick stories:
Screamers
Total Recall
Paycheck
Minority Report
Blade Runner
A Scanner Darkly
The Adjustment Bureau
Impostor
Sure I am missing several.
I remember this movie on cable years ago and it's cool and underrated.
I "think" I heard in a commentary that it was a dream because of the fade to white at the end represented him becoming "lobotomized".
Or waking up.
To me the three biggest clues that prove this was a dream are 1. When starting the implant procedure the doctor mentions a blue sky on Mars. 2. A perfect replicated picture of Melina is on the monitor from just a few attributes Only one of which was a physical attribute. 3. This one no one ever seems to consider but at the end while kissing the screen fades to white. Usually when a movie ends it will fade to black but a fade to white is usually symbolized by someone waking up.
You need to watch RoboCop and Starship Troopers. They're kinda related to this one and they have the same Director.
I do remember, the year Total Recall came out, it was the ONLY nominee for Best Visual Effects. The nominators all agreed that Total Recall was so far ahead of everyone else that year that it was unthinkable to even have any other nominees.
It came out back in 1990
Emily, you are so good. You should be a professional announcer of some type.
It’s a really fun movie. One of the best of its time. Great story, and and alien element too. A real adventure with epic elements to the story.
"What kind of drugs is this movie on??" Yes.
Growing up on these movies it was never the violence that stuck with me. Benny's betrayal crushed me as a kid, I loved that character..
Turdbinium is what you mine out of ancient cesspools....
Have you watched Willow before? That has to be one of my all time favorites
To me, "NAR-OH! YOU BLEW MY CAR-VAR!!" is up there with "GET TO THE CHOPPAH!!"
I like the theme of identitity. Are we just our memories? This film says yes so does the constructed personality Quaid have the right exist over the original personality Hauser? If constructed personalities exist is anyone real and how would anyone know?
These themes are also explored in Dark City a very underated science fiction film from Alex Proyas i hope you check out one day
"You can fuck off"...lol I like how she says that
"I'll be home in time for cornflakes" LOL.
Paul Verhoeven has said the bright white light you see before the credits is Quaid being lobotomized. That he was in a dream the whole time and you are given clues throughout the film. As soon as Quaid goes to Recall, everything after that is a dream and he is stuck inside of it. Which that completely changes the film into it being pretty depressing, knowing it is a dream and Quaid doesn't get a positive outcome. Of course, that could just be Verhoeven screwing around with fans, he does like to do that a lot on occasion.
Oh yeah, the woman with three breasts, also had a small role on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and was in two episodes. The guy that voices the Johnny Cab is Robert Picardo, who was in tons of various films and in Star Trek: Voyager as the holographic doctor.
Well according to Verhoeven both versions are cannon
3 bresticles. 🤣
Fun fact, the guard captain on Mars is the same actor that played dukat, in ds9. Less the make up.
"You just used me to get inside."
"Inside what?"
Both your reactions are priceless 😂
