    Hi Jeff! Great news!! I finally figured out a way to “push”, ha ha, the pvc through the uniseal!! Besides sanding down the end edges and lubricating the uniseal, I wrapped a clear piece of packing tape, the wide stuff, around the shaft (sorry, 😊) of the pvc and the sucker slipped right in!! Hallelujah 🎉

    Thanks for this awesome video and taking the time to thoroughly explain how you build your filter systems.
    Since you're building this for a duck pond I was hoping you could answer some questions:
    1. How many ducks will the pond service?
    2. How large is the pond?
    3. What bacteria (and how much) would you suggest the biofilter part of your build be seeded with to remove ammonia from the water?
    4. Where did you purchase the check valve for your filters?
    Thanks!

    I have discovered that my 6500 gallon per hour pump barely is fed enough water with 1 3 inch pipe. Therefore I have 2 - 3 inch pipes now between my 2 barrels. My 2nd barrel hold the pump, since I had 3 new submersible pumps. I haven't added my media yet, but plan on using an extra lid with holes drilled in it, to act as a barrier between the media and the drain and skimmer inlets. My 2nd pipe was added when the barrels were buried in the ground. Had to use 2 - 2x4's to pry to get it through the uniseals. The holes were also out of alignment. Luckily, no leaks :) Thanks for sharing

    • @jeffakamax

      Yeah, uniseals are a bear to get the pipe seated sometimes. But they do allow for quite a bit of misalignment. Glad you got it sorted out.

      I connected a pressure filter to a barrel filter for more filtration with K1 media. It worked very well for years until the uniseal failed due to the weight of the check valve. The connection was extremely difficult to stop leaks at the connection because of the flex pipe from the pressure filter. I eventually resolved it by slightly melting the pipe onto
      the 1 1/2 inch fitting going into the check valve. Any suggestions to support this intake. Also wonder if I can connect another barrel filter and make it airreated. If I can, should I drop in a small bubbler at the bottom. All this comes from a 3000 gph pump in the skimmer box. Thanks for any suggestions!

      The 2" supports a flow rate of 2500 to 3000 gpm or so quite well. For your setup you only need a flow rate of 500 gpm give or take. 1" should be fine for that.

These little Juveniles need pretty pristine water so I’m wondering if you think this system would give adequate mechanical/ biologic system for my application ? Thanks in advance, Rod

      Absolutely! I have a few 125 gallon heavily stocked African cichlid tanks and this filter holds about 5 times more media than my sump systems hold. Just want to say, I built this and it is SO EASY TO CLEAN! I love it! I have it running on a 800-900 gallon pond. I am in the process of expanding another pond, which will be about 3000 gallons. I am thinking about a two barrel system. One static like this one and one fluidized. Do you have a video on how to build a two barrel system? I need to know how to plumb the two together, what height difference they need to be, and how much k1 to put in the fluidized, as well as which air pump and diffuser to use in the fluidized filter. I am planning to get a 3100 gph submersible pump from Helix. It will be at the bottom of a 4 foot deep pond, where it will come up at the end opposite the filters and run about 13 feet to the filters. Do you think that will be adequate flow rate after head loss? Do you have a recommendation on the pump over the Helix? thanks!

      @@jeffakamax I watched the videos, thanks. It looks like each barrel is maybe 6 inches higher than the next one? I am hoping two barrels is enough, as one barrel is actually big for the space I have. I wish I could get by with one barrel on the 3000 gallon pond, but I'm guessing it is not enough. You mentioned in this video that you don't use slotted pipes for the overflow anymore, so if I am doing one static bed and one moving bed, can I use the same single pipe with shower drain for the moving bed filter? How much k1 should I use in the moving bed filter, and which pump and airstones do you recommend? Do you have any experience with the Helix pumps? They are pricey and high wattage (460 watts). I just want something reliable that does not cost more than it needs to in electricity. I appreciate your advice! Any tips for connecting the two barrels together, as far as leverage? It's hard to do it with just one barrel that you can reposition.

It is fluidized with one air pump and two disks. I think it needs more air as it’s not really churning much. I also see the third barrel filling about 2/3 rds full. I set the pump in the pond with a retrofit bottom drain attached to a leaf basket, per your design. Also did not split the pump to the waterfall; decided to use another pump in the skimmer box to run to another 1 barrel system and attach it to the waterfall eliminating the pressure filter will that work? Thanks again for advice!

    • @jeffakamax
      @jeffakamax  Месяц назад

      Sounds like you have it pretty well sorted! Bubbles returning are fine and actually beneficial. The water level of all drums can be controlled with the overflow drain height, but having the last barrel a little low is safe. The single barrel eliminating the pressure filter will work just fine. Additional beneficial bacteria is always a good thing.
      Keep an eye on your water clsrity, you will know when your media starts colonizing. A bit of sodium bi carb (baking soda) will jump start your good bacteria... and buffer kH, which is always good.

I am installing a skimmer and we plan on putting in a waterfall next year. Will a three-barrel system with 3000 +- gph flow rate be enough for this pond? Would an additional barrel help? Thank you for your comments and thoughts!

      @@jeffakamax The Pump-n-Dump system uses 4.5 gpm to augment the heat and/or AC. Said differently, whenever the heat or AC is running there is 4.5 gpm of fresh water added to the pond. Just today I finished installing a Heilix pond skimmer with a 4800 gph pump running through a three-barrel filter patterned after yours. I put K1 in the first two barrels and will use a combination of K1 and K1micro in the third barrel. I literally turned it on two hours ago. The pond has been neglected over the years. My wife and I removed 2 wheel-barrels of muck from the pond and we didn't likely put a dent in the muck.

      @@duanegangwish9081 4800 is a little high, but without knowing your head height and length of run, etc. It might be pretty close to ideal.
      Neglected ponds full of sludge happen far to often unfortunately. The good news for you is that you can pump 6500 gallons a day out and your hvac flow through will top you back up. I'd build a simple vac with a dewatering pump capable of handling solids. You could move it around the bottom and pump a days worth of sludge out and let it top up naturally. Then just repeat as time allows. It won't be fast but every cycle will be a step closer.

Any suggestions to support that connection. The connection to the check valve was leaky until I melted the flex pipe from the pressure filter to the connection. Hi Jeff, I am getting ready to build mine, and plan to use rigid PVC going to and from the pond all the way. Does the height of the pipe going from the pump into the filter need to be a certain distance from the bottom of the filter? Do I need to use 45 degree elbows from my ground level pipes going to and from the pond, or are 90 degree okay? It is about a 10 foot run. Also, I need to hook up a hose after the gate valve, so I can water plants. Do I need a large diameter hose, l iij keep a pool hose?

    • @jeffakamax
      @jeffakamax  3 года назад

      Rigid pvc is fine. The pump can be at any level, head pressure is the rise from the water level in the pond to the overflow point in the first barrel. This rise will affect your flow rate. The pump being under 4 feet ot water for example does not affect head height. 2 45 degree fittings offer only marginal improvements over a single 90 due to the additional frictional loss in the additional 45 degree fitting. The bottom clean out would ideally be a larger pipe only to dump the drum as fast as possible to remove the suspended solids after churning it up. I too tried watering flower beds with a sump pump lowered into the drum. It takes so long to drain that the suspended solids settled out and were never thoroughly evacuated.

    Thanks for your videos Jeff. I have made a 3 barrel system and am having problems with water flow.
    Water is pumped in 40mm pipe to bottom of barrel 1. Water rises to drain pipe (50mm) which is fitted internally in barrel 1 and exits at bottom into barrel 2. The same setup applies to barrel 2 into barrel 3 which exits back to pond. This is a stepped system, each step is 3". The exit pipe is 10.5" from the top of barrel.
    Without restricting the flow into barrel 1 by use of a ball valve, the water overflows the barrel. Restricting the flow results in just a trickle getting through to pond!
    What do you suggest to increase water flow between barrels Without overflowing barrel 1? Would putting an extra exit in each barrel be the solution as raising the step-down is not possible? Would there be any benefit of lowering the exit pipe?
    Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    • @jeffakamax
      @jeffakamax  2 года назад +1

      I would start by setting your overflow height on barrel 1 so your media is 2 inches from the top. On barrel 2 set the overflow 5 inches from the top. On barrel 3 set it 8 inches from the top. You can compensate for the limited step difference on the drums by adjusting your water levels. A larger diameter pipe between the drums would also help. There is a big difference in water pressure between drums as they are stacked higher.
      What is the gph of your pump?
