How predictive policing software works

- People have been attempting to better understand crime to prevent future instances of it since the 1800s. Today's predictive policing involves computer grids that map points with disproportionate criminal activity. HunchLab uses a tree based technique with a learning algorithm to assign risk to grid cells. Here's how the system works.

It's my understanding that the system sometimes creates what's called a Minority Report?
So weird that Numberphile did a video on Predictive Policing 3 hours ago... and then this comes out...!
+Alex Dixon Loomey nati
Going after the criminal instead of the greater systemic reasons why crime happens. So American.
+danae floyd You sort of have to do both. But I agree with your point.
+danae floyd your comment is so stupid i have cancer now...
how about you get off your ass and prevent crimes, oh wait your just a critic, so American
This only takes inti account the crime that is known. To think that the only crimes committed are those which we know about is naive. This model is going after the low hanging fruit. It is not representative of "crime"; it represents the crimes we have documented. NOT crime as a whole.
The buzzing part of the alarm at 1:51 is from FTL.
I like the subtle use of Mac OS style windows.
oh iVerge, never change.
Attempting to prevent a crime before it happen will lead to innocent casualty
+Chico Athalla not doing anything leads to more innocent casualties. Hunchlab is not the end solution - quite contrary it's just one of the tools police use to create complex strategies. No policemen just come out on the street and start shooting people because computer program said there are lots of crime in that region
Xenial, these are US cops...
Mr Perez cops in other countries are equally prone to violence - computer programs have nothing to do with this
No, cops in other countries are NOT equally prone to violence. Differences in culture and training lead to different outcomes.
It's already happening. Innocent people are being killed by cops. Innocent people are going to prison for crimes they never committed.
Person of interest? Anyone?
+SharkFingers I hear you Finch
👍
Now if CBS would actually give us a damn launch date!
My police department uses Predpol, super funny that Walmart is always on lol
minority report
Worse
That was my first thought
Hopefully EFF and other security-minded orgs keep an eye on what data outfits like HunchLab and those outfits use.
This is not good though. Should'nt the focus be on the systemic reasons for crime in the first place?
Yaaaaay decision trees and random forest
that's what I was thinking too!
Numberphile anyone?
yup, I watched their video which they released today on the this topic. What a coincidence
Marco Cousins I meant that Numberphile did a video on it today. :P
Maybe you also could predict video topics on RUclips with those models ;)
alpeppone You probably could to be honest. If Pewdiepie uploads a video of an underground indie game. the chances are other will try it.
Very cool
unexpectedly interesting
nice vid, guys
ctOS?
Maps have been around a hell of a lot longer than the "early 1800's". Lordy.
Watch Dogs tech anyone???
They also use community based harassment and chemical exposure on target's to push them into a crime. These crimes are created, not predicted. In most cases.
awe
Its good to see technology being used to protect the public rather than distract the public
Pretty awesome, but all these smart big data solutions all rely on tree mapping, trimming, or variable weights that lack tact and nuance
Complelte horrible unless you lick boots and can't see the obvious negative effects this has and will have.
I bet they wonder why pigs get splattered!!!!!!!!!!!
Citizen Four
Dear god it’s 1984 and this Chanel thinks this is a good thing!
Hannah Fry anyone?
The ignorance in this comment section is shocking
So how does the model interact with institutional racism. Oh wait... Both these systems reinforce it by targeting areas that are over policed. That way when people ask why an area is over policed the system can say its the computer...great!
English class anyone
Simcity
Aajajajaja
This seems like a very expensive way of knowing....exactly what anyone who lives in any given place knows. Honestly, do the police really need expensive software to tell them where the "bad parts" of town are? I guess if the software is "objectively" profiling, the police won't get in as much trouble as if they just patrol the obvious areas.
