  • The Santa Cruz Police Department began using the Predictive Policing (or PredPol) system as a way to pinpoint hot spots for automotive thefts, but soon realized that it could be useful in many other capacities. The Predictive Policing software is location-based, meaning that it does not profile criminals, but instead crunches statistics from past reported crimes to find areas where crimes are most likely to happen.

Being arrested for walking through a "business" district and not fitting the profile of that area...? they celebrated that as though they had just arrested Al Capone, poor dude was probably completely innocent and just having a rough time! This is dangerous.

It's not the AI or predictions, it's the presence of Officer Friendly, expressing support for the community, that lowers crime.

Hey MASTER DETECTIVE....... I guess you solve the past crimes, when you don't understand the video. this software is NOT about "solving crimes" learn how to comprehend.

“Data is key” yes but if recorded data is biased, input data in PredPol will also be biased.... thus would just result in over-policing of areas. Of course crimes would displace somewhere else and arrests in hotspots would increase.

Of course they don't want to say hi. They don't want to be associated with a cop. Especially one that gives off the negative vibes that this one does.

WTH they really just arrested that guy for what, sagging? Being shirtless? Seeming like he might be high? None of those things are crimes.

Was this the segment in it's entirety? Where's the part that examines the shortfalls about technology? Like where algorithms --designed by people-- can have inherent biases?

Stacy Krett those biases are human error not computer error

I have 100% document improved. And I'm a Guinea pig for the predictive policing program. I'm a 60 four-year-old disabled woman living in Polk County Lakeland Florida. they have done full reports of arson. Set me up for jail as they stole my vehicle that I purchased months back for $10000 as I came. They threw himself on the hood of my car and turn the situation around and stole it. Anyhow, the police department were all involved sheriff's office. I should say. The last several years after I caught the lieutenant and his wife on my cell phone I followed very carefully. After that what they were doing. I'm not a criminal. I never was, but they were on my cell phone. Texting over my texts and made it known. I have criminal mischief charge filed behind my back and probably dozens of incident reports by my neighbors. . I found the false background check that was distributed to my neighbors with another felony of forced illegal entry which was an old sailed eviction. When I got to the courthouse with that number. It was all falsified documents from beginning and they were being distributed in the community. So the community could file some more. So I look like a criminal. Felt multiple felony criminal and meanwhile, I'm an elderly woman who can't even get around walks through the Walker, but if they only knew my story. I've been hit 11 times by speeding cars does that sound normal? Period i've been in multiple home invasions in my home so that sound like Right. I've had multiple animals killed from me everywhere. I live and I've had 6 vehicles stolen for me. Anyone else you know has records like this? They've been playing me for a long time. they're reading brain algorithms off of innocent American citizens. It's part of this program that they leave out. Tampa Bay times Pasco sheriff creates futuristic program to stop crime. Sheriff creates futuristic program to stop crime. Please read all the victims and you'll understand what they're really doing behind what they're doing?

First 4 minutes the cops were wrong.....now if u get a cop that is insiatent that there is a ctime taking place, he wouod have popped off blazing. This could be really bad. Its okay if they atop n talk and see whays going on, but its the automatic assumption that a crime is taking place or about to take place

Wang is just sharing his opinion. Sounds like Garcia is the one who's disgruntled. Yes and no, Wang. Officers now have the capability to direct their patrol efforts to a more precise time and location, as opposed to random patrols like before.

@World Wide I've been doing the job for 24 years, slick. If you're still engaging in random patrol, it's bc your department doesn't leverage technology and most likely bc you work in a small, Mayberry type town making 16 bucks an hours. Congrats on that.
I've been doing the job 24 years in a big city, and random patrol has long been a thing of the past. Keep up, son.
