    I just started making a Webtoon and what I’m doing is working directly on a really long canvas (800 x12800px) so that I can get pacing right and everything. I tried doing my drawings on the 800 x 1280 standard size but then when I started combining them together it just looked obvious I did it separately and it didn’t flow. Tysm for this series tho it’s been very helpful to me keep up the amazing work!

      It really interesting what you mentioned, I tried that separate notion when I was doing a manga and I ended up doing whole lot of work because the flow was clearly Frankenstein. With manga you had to work with two pages in mind and do a lot of planning the flow of movement and how it wasn’t just reading right to left but all the drawings and actions flow right to left. It takes a lot of planning with manga and sure it same with webtoon flow

      Just create a new file that is really tall, pretty sure I show it in the video. Then go to each individual file, one at a time, and copy the entire image, hit ctrl-A (select all) and then select all the layers in clip studio, or do shift-ctrl-C in photoshop, or go to the edit menu and look for a copy/merged option in any other program. Then go back to the tall file and hit ctrl-v (paste). Do that for each file, it creates a new layer each time in your new tall file. just move it around to your liking.

    Hi, I have Clip Studio but I'm new on the digital drawing. Now I have this problem, I created a new project 900x4500 px with 300dpi and I used a normal brush with size 7, exactly how you did on the previous video, but the lines aren't the same. What I mean is my size 7 on that canvas it turns out big and I can see the pixel. I don't understand why I have this low resolution, if I draw a 45 degree line I literally have stairs! What I'm doing wrong?
    p.s. thank you for your videos, they are really helpful, and English is not my first language, sorry for mistakes

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 года назад +3

      There are a lot of things that can be causing that. Make sure you are one the inking tools. and then select something like real g pen. Also make sure the smoothing is on a little. It could be caused because the brush you are using is just naturally larger. 7px from one brush to the next may not be exactly the same. You could also have a "grid" on and your pen may be "snapping" to the grid lines.

    You said with the cropping website that it takes our width from 900 pixels to 800 pixels. Do we lose stuff on the sides, does it make the art more narrow? What happens to the lost hundred pixel width?

    VERY helpful, Walter! Maybe you mentioned this in a previous video, but how does Webtoon position this on the user's screen? Is there white around the purple bkgd, or does it depend on the res of the reader's computer? On a very small monitor, or if a user increases magnification in his browser, might it be that the purple of your bkgd stretches all the way across the screen?

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 года назад +1

      On the PC it is centered at 800px wide, with white on the side. Phones and tables it takes up the entire screen. You can read it in landscape or portrait, though it's meant for portrait.

    Thank you for the video! I like it a lot and it's very helpful and clear.
    I was wondering however, if 900px is the width of the original files you draw on, or do you shrink the clip file pages to 900px before creating the long vertical page and adding the pages there?

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 года назад +3

      When I create the really long file so I can copy/paste the individual files into it, that file is still 900px wide. Just makes it faster then having to shrink everything down to the 800px that webtoon wants. When you upload your really long file to Croppy, it will magically make your files 800px wide for you.

    • @tiina-5855
      @tiina-5855 4 года назад

      @@walterostlie Thank you for the answer! I am used to drawing my webcomic on very large files, and was wondering how well this long vertical page and croppy will work with larger files. I am not exactly sure, what is recommended file size for webcomics, in the first place.

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 года назад

      What size files are you working with? I'd suggest when you export your files to JPG or whatever you use for Croppy, that you save it as a smaller file, 800px wide. This will make the file smaller for Croppy, less time to upload and less time for Croppy to process the file. But leave your original large file untouched if you want that for printing.

    • @tiina-5855
      @tiina-5855 4 года назад

      @@walterostlie Until now I have worked with huge 4000 x 6400px (same proportions as 800x1280), thinking that the bigger, the better. Then for uploading to Webtoon, shrinked each page to Webtoon size, without flattening layers, only changing vector layers into rasterized, and then saving them as png or jpg.

  • @kittrialeviana3574
    @kittrialeviana3574 4 года назад +3

    When you move the folders around, does it lower the quality of the image? ie. make the lines less sharp? Because it does that for me (I use MediBang though) so does it not lower the sharpness in csp?

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 года назад +4

      Not sure what you mean. but moving files on your computer/tablet storage shouldn't lower resolution. Moving layers in a program shouldn't lower resolution. Copying from one file to another shouldn't lower resolution. The only thing is if you are copying a small image into a larger image and then trying to upscale or increase the size of the small image to fit the larger image.

      What do you mean by too much panels? Too many panels in an episode? Or panels that are too large. There isn't really too many panels for an episode as long as the story is interesting. However, because of file size restrictions on Webtoon you can prolly only get like 100 panels in an episode. If you mean too big, try to stay around 500-1200 px tall. 500px will fit nicely on a desktop screen.

      There is a trap of overthinking. If you let something sit long enough, you'll always come up with other ideas or questions the ideas you already had. Nothing will ever be perfect, it will only be different. Set a schedule for yourself. By September 1st, your script will be done. November 1st, you will upload your first webtoon episode. Etc and with whatever dates and timelines make sense for you. You shouldn't be aiming for "the best it can be", you have to aim for "the best it can be right now". Otherwise you will never move forward. you can also get an editor, but even then this still applies. Good luck.

    Would it be too visually busy to do a hybrid comic? In other words, instead of having one panel on screen, have two side by side, so that the reader still goes left to right before scrolling down. I want to make comics readable online, but I personally find the constant scrolling of webtoons to be annoying... yet I know that's the way comics are going in the future. I've already tried tripling the canvas width, drawing in high def, font at size 45, then shrinking the finished image to 800px wide (for Webtoon) and it isn't difficult to read on my small smartphone, but I also worry I could lose detail.

    Helllo,
    On the STAKING question you
    asked the viewers....
    Aesthetic appeal or Lazyness?
    Both reasons are valid,
    The first reason more debate
    able .
    Look at a cinematic boarded
    image that you have or have
    drawn and ask yourself
    "What do I like about this picture?"
    Try it with several pictures to
    Expand the Experience.
    I say PICTURE not IMAGE.
    image can sound fractional.
    Like a Piece of a Picture.
    A Fragment.
    True, in Non stacking;
    Negative/empty Space is a
    boarder of sorts &
    Wide Arrangement can
    when Scrolling
    Up and Down;
    Work to make image pieces
    Contain the requirement
    Of a Full Field of vision.
    A work of art can extend past one's field of vision(with out scrolling or turning your self around etc.).
    I include stacking personally,
    When I draw comic books.
    Most of my favorite pages are
    3 box
    Stacked on an 11 x 17 page.

    I noticed clip already has a long virtual webtoon preset is that not a good size?

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 года назад

      You don't want to use that one, looks like it's 690px wide by 20,000 px tall. It's not wide enough, it needs to be at least 800x wide. However, even if it was, that would still be a really tall and skinny canvas. Personally I don't like working that way, but give it a try and see what you think.

  • @Anna-qwerty
    @Anna-qwerty 3 года назад

    So working right at 800px - 900px width is okay? I was thinking that some who might want to print will make their file size larger but then that might lag Clip Studio. What do you think?

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  3 года назад +2

      800px wide or more will work perfect as far as webtoon is concerned. You may want to work on a larger canvas because some artists find it easier to add details on a larger canvas. The other reason to work on a larger canvas is for printing. The size of the canvas is going to depend on how large you want to print each panel. 900px is 3 inches wide at 300dpi. A US comic page is 6.625 inches wide. So a panel would take up almost half a page if you work at 900dpi. If you want your panels to take up the entire width of a printed page, then you need to work at 2000 px to get that 6.625 printed width. I am currently working at 1900px wide.

    How long does it take to make one vertical scrolling chapter if you're working by yourself?

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 года назад +2

      It depends. Art style, number of panels, techniques. Creators who are smart about reference, perspective tools, and 3d models can draw episodes much faster. A lot may be working on their comic full-time. I work full time and do about 40-50 panels a week, which is an episode for me. I could maybe do more, but than I'd have zero free time. I don't use perspective tools, but I do have a few 3d models and try to take reference photos when I'm not feeling lazy. The more comics you make, the more streamlined your creation process gets, and you start making comics faster. When I first started it would take me a few days to do 5 panels, now I do 10 panels in a single day. Some people can prolly do even more than that.

    I'm using Medibang Paint which has features that help you organize pages in order, so I am not doing the long panel thumbnail thing unless I want a special panel. I was wondering, is that why people make their chapters one extremely long panel like this, because it's easier to separate the panel by pages afterward, as opposed to making a different art file per page from the start and maybe making mistakes? I am just interested in what other benefits there could possibly be.

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  3 года назад

      The reason I do it like I did in this video is so I can easily see all the panels together and make sure there is a good variation of panel types and that my storytelling is clear and engaging without having to open more than one file. it also let's me do color across the entire episode/file at once. So If I want to change someone's shirt color or make it night time instead of day time, I can quickly change it for all panels with a few clicks. Changing fonts or other technical stuff could potentially be faster. I haven't messed around with Medibang organization stuff, but I want to check it out now. I love organization.

    Hi there, i’m trying to make a comic that’s 1600 x 35,000 what since I’m using Clip Studio pro it maxes out the canvas at 20,000. Is there a way to get around this? Or am I supposed to make separate files and immerse them all together at the end? I haven’t tried canvases this big before and I’m not sure what to do :o

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  Год назад

      Pro limits at 20,000? Ex limits at 50,000. I would have thought they'd be the same. Have you upgraded to the most recent available version? Either way, it doesn't matter. You can still o this same process with 20,000. You'll just have shorter files and you'll need two of them (or more). The next step of this series is to splice your webtoon file into 800px x 1200px anyways, so you'd just have to do that process twice for your two 1600x20000 files, instead of once. Also Webtoon splices files for you now, so you don't really have to worry about it. I did a new video that shows how to use the new webtoon features with clipstudio that makes things a lot easier. I'm not sure if pro has all the features, but I think it has some. You should check it out. ruclips.net/video/6vheFi1EGS8/видео.html

    This is actually remarkably similar to my Procreate process. My 'chunks' are a bit squatter, to accommodate the Procreate layer limit, but I have a similar process of pulling those flattened chunks into a longer format in order to blend the seams and add transitional detail where necessary. It's a bit more tedious due to Procreate's limitations, but it works.

      I've been wondering how making a webtoon would work with procreate. I've only used it a little bit and it just seems like it would be a lot of work-arounds. I've been meaning to try it, but just haven't had the time. How do you do lettering? Port it to another program?

    • @kaydreamer
      @kaydreamer 3 года назад

      @@walterostlie Procreate 5 introduced a pretty good font tool, so I do all my lettering in the app! The only thing I really wish it had for lettering is layer borders, but I just go without outlines on my dialogue bubbles. I'll pop on a pale drop shadow if they're against a white background.
      I can relate regarding time! I'm so used to Procreate, and so dependent on and fond of all my custom brushes, that moving programs would be a massive commitment as I rebuild my library of tools. Not to mention, learning the program. Eventually I may have to, since the ergonomics of using an iPad for illustration 8 hours a day are... not ideal.
