I'm loving this series! It's a great timing for me, I'm planning to start a webcomic and actually just finished my script! I have a question: how do you manage the gutter in the infinite canvas format? I get how the vertical distance between panels changes pacing, but what about the distance between the border of the canvas and the panels? What things can be affected by changing it? Sorry if it's a weird question haha
There are a lot of things you can play with when it comes to gutter space on the left and right. Zero gutter can make the panel feel larger and more in-your-face. If you make a panel very small, it can make a character feel small or weak. Shrinking panels can have a time slowdown affect. Increasing could speed things up. Large panels slow the pace for the reader because they have to spend time. Small panels, less detail, speed up the pace. Prolly more, just have to play around with it.
Thank Walter, this is one of best tutorials I've seen in relation to making Webtoons. I'm on my way to drawing my next Webtoon soon. Just want to thank you again for these tutorials You're helping all artists have their stories come to life.
Hey Walter! It's me again! Do you have any tips on how to figure out a comic title? It's been pretty difficult and I haven't been able to find one since. Also I'm using this tutorial right now for my comic and it's going really well! Keep up the good work!
Are you talking about coming up with the name for your comic or coming up with the look of the logo? Thinking of a name can be tricky, because you want it to be so many things. Sometimes you can name it after the character or what they are going after. Like Harry Potter or Excalibur. Sometimes you can name it after the problem/conflict in the story. But usually the name has something to do with something in the story. Just say or write down all the things in your story and pick your favorite. At the end of the day, the comic will make the name great, the name will not make the comic great. So don't worry too much about the name. Just make sure the name isn't hard to spell, say, or read. if you are trying to make the logo, that's tough. Look at a bunch of other comics, get ideas. It's okay to be inspired. Sometimes I find it easier to draw the logo than find a font, there are so many fonts to look through. But if you do use a font, try to change it as much as you can, make the letters taller or fatter, move them around. Just so it doesn't look like you only typed it.
Hey Walter! I'm a bit confused at 4:25 ,where you copy the canvas into the template file. How exactly did you do it? Thank you very much for the video , it was really helpful.
I am using shortcut keys, I sometimes forget that not everyone knows them. So I do ctrl a to select the entire canvas ctrl c to copy that selection go to the template ctrl v to paste it into the template ctrl t to transform the box. That's it. You can also access these via the menus. Select it under select. The rest are under edit. Hope that helps.
Or you could, you know, just take out a sketchbook & plan out those out thumbnail with a pencil. But seriously, this is quite useful. Any method, be it software or pen & paper can still work.
This is amazing thank you I like to do my initial thumbnailing in my sketchbook and that determines how long my page would be digitally but I couldn’t find where I should do dimensions for my digital more detailed thumbnails, and you have saved me! My only question is fonts I use procreate and idk how to get certain fonts or find one that would look good and fit my comic

Hi, I'm a new subscriber and I really appreciate your truly helpful tutorials. I have a question about this template; I'm terrible at math, lol. I wanted to use this method for my webtoon because I believe it'll help me with the flow of the story (my first time creating a vertical comic) My question is, the dimensions I'm using are 2400px x 19200; would the dimensions you used work as well? Would I multiply 2400 x 5 to create the width of the page? I hope I asked that correctly; thanks in advance 🙂
Yes, it would be 12,000 x 19,200 . A really large file. Any reason you're drawing at 2400 px wide? I used to do 3300px wide, but realized that it was prolly way too big for no reason.
@@walterostlie hi, thanks for getting back to me. I'm using Webtoons format and I saw another tutorial saying to increase the size to add more details then decrease (I increased it 3x) once you're ready to split and post. I was going to work one sheet at a time, but having several makes more sense to me; it's hard to explain 😊
I never do storyboard lol thats it's probably why it takes me so long to finish. Lol I write in story form then try and put in webtoon format w panels and such.
It's always more important to do what works for you, versus what anyone else is doing. Doing the sketchy storyboards eases me into the drawing process so I don't have to go from 0 to 100 instantly.
This was super helpful as I am starting my first comic! I have a couple questions though (if you're still active here). You mentioned 900 pixels wide for printing, but webtoon requires 800 pixel width for uploading, do you scale it down later? I've noticed a lot of creators draw their comics in bigger sizes than the webtoon upload size and it confuses me. Also is there a particular reason/benefit for drawing panels in that column grid you made instead of one really long strip?
Size is kinda weird. In the second to last video of this series, I show how to prep the file for upload and I use a website that cuts the image into small pieces and also shrinks it to 800px wide. The reason I did 900 for this video is because that is 3 inches of hi-res print resolution. Which would hopefully be enough resolution for a single panel if you decided to print it later. A lot of artists use even larger resolutions because they like to zoom in and add tiny details. Or because they want to make sure they have more options to print their panels extra large if needed (promo, posters, etc). However, the larger the file the more it will tax your computer and also will take up more space on your hard drive. every 300 pixels is an inch of hi-res print resolution. If you want super hi-res, then every 600px is one inch of super-hi-res print resolution. Drawing the comic in multiple columns allows me to see the entire comic on a single screen. So I can see if the panels are exciting, varied, that there is good storytelling. A long strip it can be hard to get an overall view of an episode.
Awesome. Glad the method works for you. Was weird trying to figure out good ways to handle the webtoon format. I'm sure we'll all keep learning better ways to do things.
@@walterostlie yea webtoons format very different from traditional comic format, however alot of the tutorials ive seen have involved photoshop and as someone who uses only clip, this is a good way to go about it since the programs dont have the same tools. So thank you all the same!
Question, if I want to hit both printed comic AND webtoon, which is better? Starting a webtoon format and changing it to regular comic format? Or the other way around?
That's tricky to answer and will depend a lot on your comic. If you are doing big action splash pages or double splash pages, focusing on print format will be better. If you comic is a little more calm, starting with either could be fine. If you want to focus mostly on Webtoon growth, using that format to it's full potential would be a good idea. Print is good for bold cinematic panels or splashes, that won't have as much impact when converted to webtoon. Webtoon is great for creating an immersive, seemless storytelling, which doesn't work or fit into a print page.
@@walterostlie Thank you for taking the time to give a clear and thorough reply. No huge splash pages, but true to what you said, directing it and leading the eye would drastically differ. I liked the way things pan out in webtoon format, there's no chance for the reader's eye to wander throughout the page and would be restricted to one event at a time. However and was thinking that in exhibitions I would have a better chance to market myself had i a few printed comics to sell rather than handing out flyers that I've a comic on webtoon. What are your thoughts about this?
Hi Walter thank you a lot for your how to series, I wondered if the font you used is copyrighted ? If so, do you have some free alternatives for commercial use? Thanks !
Check out blambot.com for a bunch of free to use fonts created by a professional letterer. He also has some pay fonts if you want to support him. I am using out of line font.
Hey, awesome question. Thanks for making me actually think about this and put it into words. I think there are few reasons... 1. Scrolling on webtoon means you usually won't see two panels next to each other, so you don't really notice the similarity of panels as you read. With traditional comics, you see all the panels at once, you would notice if they all looked the same and it wouldn't be a great looking page overall. This is the big reason why you can't use more headshots in Traditional comics. 2. Traditional comics have a finite amount of space, every panel/page is an extra amount of $$ to print. So having 100 pages of headshots wouldn't be a great use of page real estate. 3. webtoon readers have grown accustomed to more headshots. Traditional comics readers have grown accustomed to variation of panels. I guess this is a chicken or the egg situation. With Webcomics, creators tend to be making their comics during their free time, so they had to find ways to make comics faster. Drawing head shots are immensely quicker to draw than most other panels. I think readers have grown to accept this over time. 4. Webtoon is read via phone. It's a small screen. Details and huge epic environment drawings don't have the same impact. Close ups of emotion have a lot of punch on a small screen. 5. Larger text in Webtoon means you can't fit as much dialogue into a single panel. So drawing another headshot to hold the rest of the dialogue is fine because the reader will be paying attention to the dialogue and less so to the art. Traditional comics tend to have smaller font size, so they can't fit more text into a single panel. There are prolly other reasons, but these are the first to come to mind. I think it is also important to say that you can use a lot of headshots in traditional comics if you want. It could even look kinda cool to have a page of talking heads if you did it right, but it's not something you could do other and other in traditional comics before traditional comic readers noticed. And webtoons could use no headshots if they wanted as well.
Walter does the trick of the 'phone size' box work in the webtoons preset of CSP? That one is set for 690 wide but it would be easier to see where i am at.... Or do i just draw the borders ( even temp). Love your stuff man (the Bats kick ass) thank you for all of your help! -JD
So I am not sure what that webtoon preset from CSP is meant for, but you shouldn't use it for Webtoon. Webtoon has a requirement of 800 px wide. If you draw at 690px wide, your art is going to end up looking blurry or small on Webtoon. But you could still use the phone trick, it will won't be exactly correctly because of the size difference.
Guyss, if you work on ibispaintX from your phone you can do a 4000 x 3840 px canvas! And for the grid you can do 5 verical lines and 3 horizontal lines (to set the grid you go on filter > frame > table(count)) (i personally did the vertical and horizontal lines in 2 different layers). Then for the guide rectangle just add a new layer, pick a color , use the bucket to color one rectangle and then you can move it around how u want!(each section is gonna be 800×1280). Also i personally made a folder to keep these 3 layers in 😸😸
Very nice! I've been wanting to look at Ibis and a good method for it, but haven't had time. I was thinking the only way would just be to use a bunch of individual 800x1280 files. but that is cool that ibis can handle larger files.
@@walterostlie yuppp, i'm working on a webtoon and for chapter 2 i did it like that xD, i used a buch of 800x1280 files (and some longer strips) and when i was done i combined everything using gimp on pc (it was quite a lot of work loll). Now for chapter 3 i'm gonna try out this method! (I'm still gonna use gimp to form the long stripe tho)
I watched a lot of videos and all I see is them cropping it for webtoon. as a newbie, I don't understand how to get to that point. But this one, I finally get it😅
Question: if someone creates a webtoon traditionally on paper 1) how can i create a manga panel? Can i do it by hand or not? Also what size must the panel be exactly? 2) when i finish creating a panel and draw a page ,is there a way i can convert the hand writing manga page to a file to my pc?
A panel is just a box shape or any shape containing a "panel" So there isn't a specific type of manga panel. You can just use a ruler to draw lines. There isn't a specific one panel size for all cases. You can think of the image you upload to Webtoon as being around 2.5 inches wide and a little over 4 inches tall. So you can divide a piece of paper into columns that size. Once you're down drawing, if you don't have a scanner to scan the drawing to your computer, you can take a photo with a camera and then use a free software to edit the image. Medibang, gimp, krita, etc
I am not sure what you mean? are you talking about comics that are created by placing 3d objects in a 3 dimensional environment, then taken a "photo" of the scene that was created for use in a sequential 2d static comic? Sorta like taking a CG movie like Frozen and using still images of that movie as comic book panels?
@@walterostlie Yes. The one where placing 3d objects and in 3 dimensional environment. Like in 3d, does it mean more detail and 2d has less or what is the difference between the two?
@@sweetdulce364 3D gives better perspective and dynamic than 2D, but 2D gives you a wider variety of detail, touches, and I think is easier to work with
Did I say that? Thumbnails are the most important thing about comics, ever! Thumbnails are basically sketching your entire comic. This allows you to see if the art work is telling the story effectively, makes sure there are enough panels, see that the panels are varied and exciting. They do so much. It allows you to see your comic without have to do a lot of work, so you can quickly make changes. Very important.
Hello, sir! Can you make a tutorial on how you did the guide lines in Medibang Paint so that we can further modify them? I just downloaded the Medibang Paint file and saw guide lines but I can't find on how to adjust them. Please send help. ^_^
I don't think you can do too much with those blue lines from the file in MediBang. They are pulled from the original photoshop file I created and then exported to Medibang. You can hide them though by going to view menu and turning off "guidelines" You can create our own guides in medibang by using "Snap" menu and parallel or by use "View" and grid settings. Hope that helps.
"Now this thumbnail took around 38 minutes to complete, now I know what you're thinking-" Wow that's a pretty short amount of time, I always take forever doing thumbnails. "This is pretty time consuming for something no ones gonna see-" 👁👄👁
whats up Walter I am in the process of creating a grahic novel but I notice webtoons has a different page lay out my page layout is from the American version of comic books pages if it possible to fit my panels fit in webtoons or I got to do it over again.
You can just upload your comic pages as you have them in american format, but it won't work perfect. The font is most likely going to be too small. The right way to do it is to copy your panels into a new file, and stack the panels on top of each other. Then bring your text layers over, but larger compared to the art. You'll have to make your lettering go outside the boxes since the are bigger and will no longer fit.
Do a lot of quick sketches to get a few ideas. Pick you favorite, tweak it to make it look even better. Than draw a very high resolution version of it. Or draw it with vector art. You can really use any art program. Illustrator, photoshop, and ClipStudio can do vector art
Basically it just let's the layers below that phone screen layer still retain the same level of "black". If the layer is multiply, then black on the layers below will still be black. If you change multiply to normal, it will color the black lines to whatever color is on the phone screen layer.
Are you drawing black lines or separating the columns in some special way. I'm so confused how is the pink layer sliding perfectly. Did I miss something
Sir I want to purchase clip studio paint subscription and I am from India but there's not any option for our currency. How should I purchase it????????????
You can do it the same way as this. Just look at the main things I am doing, you should be able to replicate most of this in Krita using similar tools.
It depends on the size of the panels and how complicated and full the panels are. You could maybe get 200 if they were smaller. More likely an 80 panel range. It will be different for different art styles. Example a lot of halftones take up more disk space.
You can use any art app. The one I use is Clip Studio Paint. You have to pay for it, but it's not super expensive and they have sales about 4 times a year. It's a good app with a lot of built-in comic features. If you want free check out Medibang.
You just have to repeat a step for each column you have. Check out the layout video to explain what I do with this final when I'm done, it will be clear. ruclips.net/video/YxO6J3DtQBg/видео.html I've also changed the way I've done things because of the new clip studio features which you can check out here if you use clip studio ruclips.net/video/6vheFi1EGS8/видео.html
I‘m a new WEBTOON creater and I would like to know what the difference between normal webtoons and canvas is... I am getting confused and Idk which one I should use
You can only upload canvas. you have to be invited to be an original. original creators are paid a publishing fee by webtoon. ruclips.net/video/oUCzDcTs0VI/видео.html
It is similar-ish. You can do a lot of the same stuff, but there are tools in ClipStudio that are made specifically for comics. Also some tools that you can only get in Photoshop using plugins. That doesn't make it better, just different. It's my preferred art program, however, I still have to use PS for some stuff like sound fx and webtoon layouts because clipstudio can't make canvas sizes larger than 50,000 pixels.

So I do
ctrl a to select the entire canvas
ctrl c to copy that selection
go to the template
ctrl v to paste it into the template
ctrl t to transform the box.
That's it. You can also access these via the menus. Select it under select. The rest are under edit. Hope that helps.
Yes! Thanks a lot.
the exact video ive been looking for! lots of great tips, thanks so much :')
Awesome, thanks for watching. Best of luck with your comic.
Or you could, you know, just take out a sketchbook & plan out those out thumbnail with a pencil.
But seriously, this is quite useful.
Any method, be it software or pen & paper can still work.
Can't wait for the next video uwuwu
I am excited to complete the series. Hopefully I can pass off all the information people will need. Or at least most of it.
Thank you 🙏 for these!
Thank you for watching! Hope it's helping.
You got my biggest respect for doin' this.....thank you so much and now I won't be an confused infant doin webtoon
My pleasure. Good luck with your comic, let me know if you have any questions.
I don't know if you can add fonts to procreate, but the best comic fonts are on blambot.com and over half of them are free.
How do you make a WEBTOON comic? Like where do you need to go to make one. I’ve been trying for 2 days help me.

That could work. I've started using logic leap.
This was very helpful. Where were you when I was researching for webtoon before! Seriously, none of your videos showed up lol or maybe I didn't look hard enough. I'm new to webcomics or comics period and I'm about to launch my first comic for the 2020 short story contest but this was very informative and I will keep this in mind for my next series and but sure to check out the rest of your videos. Thank you! By the way, I'm assuming the comic you showed in the video if from your series(?), where can I read it before hat was awesome!?
Hey, glad it was helpful. And congrats on finishing your comic and submitting to the contest. The comic I worked on in this video was just something I created for the video. @@walterostlie Thank you and thank you for the links! I just read Joe v. Sindra and its super EPIC! I loved seeing you work on it in the video then seeing the finished project. Supper cool! great job! and i look forward to reading your comic. Hopefully i do very in the contest since I kinda drew every scene traditional before coloring it digitally, then adding the speech bubbles. so your videos are relly helpful. thanks again!

Hi, I'm a new subscriber and I really appreciate your truly helpful tutorials. I have a question about this template; I'm terrible at math, lol. I wanted to use this method for my webtoon because I believe it'll help me with the flow of the story (my first time creating a vertical comic)
My question is, the dimensions I'm using are 2400px x 19200; would the dimensions you used work as well?
A long strip it can be hard to get an overall view of an episode.
well I will be doing this now XD this was one of the better ways ive seen this done!
Goodness thank you

FIRE!
Woot!

Hey, thank you for watching. Hope the video helped in some way.
@@walterostlie definitely did! I'm starting webtooning and I've already binged through your videos. Very helpful, subscribed!
@@grandqa did u end up making the series?
Just curious, but why do you say that you can do more headshots on webtoon than in print format?
Good stuff! Thanks.
@@walterostlie 😆 so they give one that's not even worth using! Got it! Ok back to your template and the clippy site! Thank you again!
Let me know how it goes
@@walterostlie alright 😸😸
I watched a lot of videos and all I see is them cropping it for webtoon. as a newbie, I don't understand how to get to that point. But this one, I finally get it😅
Question: if someone creates a webtoon traditionally on paper
1) how can i create a manga panel?
Thanks a lot my friend!!!
Is it necessary to use that kind of drawing tool? 😥 all i have is firealpaca
You can use any drawing program you want. You could use a crayon and a napkin.
I also forgot to ask. What is the difference between 2d and 3d comics?
I am not sure what you mean? are you talking about comics that are created by placing 3d objects in a 3 dimensional environment, then taken a "photo" of the scene that was created for use in a sequential 2d static comic? Sorta like taking a CG movie like Frozen and using still images of that movie as comic book panels?
@@walterostlie Yes. The one where placing 3d objects and in 3 dimensional environment. Like in 3d, does it mean more detail and 2d has less or what is the difference between the two?
@@sweetdulce364 3D gives better perspective and dynamic than 2D, but 2D gives you a wider variety of detail, touches, and I think is easier to work with
Im really sorry for the stupid question but what exactly are thumbnails? You said that they didn’t matter but they look pretty crucial to me
Did I say that? Thumbnails are the most important thing about comics, ever! Thumbnails are basically sketching your entire comic. This allows you to see if the art work is telling the story effectively, makes sure there are enough panels, see that the panels are varied and exciting. They do so much. It allows you to see your comic without have to do a lot of work, so you can quickly make changes. Very important.
uploaded on my bday lol
Happy birthday! Belated.
@@walterostlie Thank you so much for this! I hope I can also successfully run my own webtoon soon!
"Now this thumbnail took around 38 minutes to complete, now I know what you're thinking-"

"This is pretty time consuming for something no ones gonna see-"

I'm so new to clip studio I'm still trying to figure out how you even made a straight line on the grid lmao
whats up Walter I am in the process of creating a grahic novel but I notice webtoons has a different page lay out my page layout is from the American version of comic books pages if it possible to fit my panels fit in webtoons or I got to do it over again.
You can just upload your comic pages as you have them in american format, but it won't work perfect. The font is most likely going to be too small. The right way to do it is to copy your panels into a new file, and stack the panels on top of each other. Then bring your text layers over, but larger compared to the art. You'll have to make your lettering go outside the boxes since the are bigger and will no longer fit.
thanks for info I be watching

did you use a pen tablet to draw this comic?
Yes. I have an old Cintiq 21UX.
omg, i related so much when you said thumbnailing hurts your brain so hard! 😂 it's my least favorite step 🥴. thanks for the tips.
They are so tough. That is the bulk of the work for drawing comics. Comic art would be at least 50% easier if you didn't have to do thumbs.
Walter Ostlie 😅yah.. i skipped it before & my pages looked like sh-😳. currently redoing pages for my comics. i’m binging your videos for tips 🤓
how do i create/design a specific/signature logo or title logo or whatever it is called for my webtoon?
Do a lot of quick sketches to get a few ideas. Pick you favorite, tweak it to make it look even better. Than draw a very high resolution version of it. Or draw it with vector art. You can really use any art program. Illustrator, photoshop, and ClipStudio can do vector art
Noob question but what does setting the phone screen template to multiply do? 😅
Basically it just let's the layers below that phone screen layer still retain the same level of "black". If the layer is multiply, then black on the layers below will still be black. If you change multiply to normal, it will color the black lines to whatever color is on the phone screen layer.
@@walterostlie thank you!
Are you drawing black lines or separating the columns in some special way. I'm so confused how is the pink layer sliding perfectly. Did I miss something
If you hold shift on your keyboard while you are moving layers, it will lock it into a vertical or horizontal movement only.

None of the important stuff I did was ClipStudio specific. You should be able to do all of this in Krita.
How did u copy and paste it?
@WalterOstlie
How many panels can 1 webtoon chapter/episode have? :)
It depends on the size of the panels and how complicated and full the panels are. You could maybe get 200 if they were smaller. More likely an 80 panel range. It will be different for different art styles. Example a lot of halftones take up more disk space.
@@walterostlie
Thank you :) for the reply.
How much panels for a episode?
It depends. 40-60 is a good place to start. It's what works for your story and your schedule. Some are 10 panels, some are 100.
Walter Ostlie Ok thanks! Keep up the good work on RUclips and Webtoon!
I’m trying to create a WEBTOON and I’m not sure what kind of art app I should use any suggestions?
You can use any art app. The one I use is Clip Studio Paint. You have to pay for it, but it's not super expensive and they have sales about 4 times a year. It's a good app with a lot of built-in comic features. If you want free check out Medibang.
Walter Ostlie thanks so much :)

Are you going make a new comic after haxor
I'm actually working on a new Webtoon now, hopefully launching in November.
Will adding a 6th column of panels affect how WEBTOON takes the full upload file after it’s inked and colored?
You just have to repeat a step for each column you have. Check out the layout video to explain what I do with this final when I'm done, it will be clear. ruclips.net/video/YxO6J3DtQBg/видео.html I've also changed the way I've done things because of the new clip studio features which you can check out here if you use clip studio ruclips.net/video/6vheFi1EGS8/видео.html

@@walterostlie okay thank you! I was so confused at first. This helped me! Keep up your great webtoons :))
Is that clip studio paint is similar to Photoshop....?
It is similar-ish. You can do a lot of the same stuff, but there are tools in ClipStudio that are made specifically for comics. Also some tools that you can only get in Photoshop using plugins. That doesn't make it better, just different. It's my preferred art program, however, I still have to use PS for some stuff like sound fx and webtoon layouts because clipstudio can't make canvas sizes larger than 50,000 pixels.
Can you do one for reading format
What exactly do you mean by reading format? We may just be using different words for the same thing, but I'm not familiar with that term.
Walter Ostlie oh I saw someone’s tutorial
and they made there pages vertically. You know the way you read it on WEBTOON. But it was a little confusing, I used the frame border and the outside was still blue and I couldn’t change it. I know you eventually get to the vertical part but I wanted to know if you could start there. The dimensions are 2480 x 27777 px 350 dpi
