National Automobile Museum Part 1

The National Automobile Museum is made from the surviving 175 cars of the 1400 car Bill Harrah collection. Harrah collected everything from world class autos to common production cars. Of the cars saved many are very early cars dating back to 1894. Part one looks at many of these early cars.

I visited Harrah's out in Sparks (just east of Reno), in 1989, when they'd already sold off some of the collection, but still was amazing. Glad to see another organization inherited the rest. The '37 Airmobile that looks like a lobster, is at the Peterson museum in L.A. They seem to also have every other orange car in the world.

The 1977 "Jeerrari" was actually built by/for Howard Hughes and sold to Bill. I used to be a member of Hot August Nights and back when it used to be Harrah's Auto Museum they had James Dean's 1949 Merc, which me and a friend got running for the first time since Mr. Dean's passing. I miss Reno...

I grew up in Reno. I worked for a restaurant that would host catering events at that museum every week. When I wasn’t working I would just walk around awing at all these beautiful cars and the manager would show me all his favorites it was really cool for me as some one who loves history.

So, that's what happened to some of the Famous Harrah's car collection. I remember when it was just the Famous Harrah's Car Collection. I have trays of slides from that place. Folks would sell famous cars out in the lot, outside, with the permission of the museum, of course. I almost bought a Mercedes gull wing in street condition. Can you imagine it was only going for $3,400. dollars, "Back in the day"? Those were 1972 dollars. Hind sight is 20/20.

Jeanne Uzar I had the chance to buy a Jaguar E type for 1,200. And a Porsche 914-6 for 2,400 and a great one for 3,500. But I suppose a Cobra 427 new on the showroom for 6K takes the cake. Where is my time machine!!

Jeanne Uzar I do recal \l too that if you walked through the collection and didn't stop and look at any of the cars, it took about 8 hours to go through. GAD. That's 20 seconds per car.
