Wow, NOBODY gets across the romance & excitement & reverence and plain-old love of those times, and the guys who drove, and why they MATTER, like Ficarra. Thanks, John.
I met Phil at Laguna Seca the first year Jaguar was the featured car at the Monterey Historic races, back in the 1970s. At that venue he drove the Briggs Cunningham Jaguar D-Type. Spoke to both Phil and Briggs. The memory of a lifetime.
Thanks John I’ve had Parkinson’s since I was in my early 20’s and in my mid 40’s now That group does amazing work and what a great car. Out of all the car guys on here, I know that I can always trust what you say about cars as you have the drive and passion. Keep up the great work And know I’m not letting this disease stop me as I’m building a lotus replica in the garage with my kid.
Ficarra Classics has become my absolute favorite RUclips channel. Your knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for all things automotive is purely infectious. Thanks John, what a great story about the Jaguar XK-120C and Phil Hill, and thanks Kelly Telfer for donating a masterpiece to a totally worthy cause!
Great video! I was born in 1955 and my Dad and I watched a lot of racing (I guess it was Wide world of Sports). Phi Hill, Dan Gurney, Fangio, Stirling Moss were my boyhood heroes. As a Canadian, I especially loved the American drivers as they just seemed so much closer to home. Phil Hill and Dan Gurney were my two favourites Cheers and Thanks!
The ONLY BITS OF HISTORY I want 2 hear from Mr. Ficarra is Anything Italian preferably about underhanded, rumored or whispered futuristic engineering.... Seriously john is #1 story teller on vinwiki...Love all ur stories John
Those race car driver are Legends. Not full face helmet, no safety, insane speed, no windscreen, drum brakes, manual transmission also. Legend. Also thank you for he story about mr Phil Hill, i always hear about him but never really heard his story. Greetings from Bali John
Thanks for bringing Phil Hill back into our collective minds. He was a fearless and focused driver and represented the sport in a positive light with class. Cheers 🇨🇦
Top work, John, as always. When considering cars and motorsports, I've always thought I was born 20 years too late. I think we were cut from the same cloth. Keep it up!
This video and indeed channel deserves far more subscribers , A really and excellent video on a car I love , the C and D Jaguars and the Aston Martin DBR1 represent some of the greatest Sports Racers ever - Superb Video John
Another great episode, John! Your knowledge on all things automotive is unsurpassed. Brilliant stuff...Maybe we will see my old '63 C2 on here one day...
Another truly interesting fact about Phil Hill was his relaxation hobby, which he took no less seriously than his racing was restoring player pianos.I was lucky enough to interact with hims a number of times at the Monterey Historic Races and he was ALWAYS a true gentleman, even as famous as he was. One time that sticks in my memory today, some thirty plus years later, he was black flagged for what the chief steward considered to be erratic driving through turn 2, when he came into the pit lane at the black flag station, he was initially upset and wanted to know why he had been given the flag, I told him what the steward had said, he broke out laughing and replied, "This car is a real bitch, it wants to go sideways as soon as you touch the gas!" When I passed this on to the steward, I could almost hear their laughter across the track. Phil was just the nicest person you would want to meet, but he did NOT suffer fools gladly!
Well done automotive history lesson! Loving the content and frequency! They would have to have security pry me out of that seat if I was lucky enough to sit in it! Go Ficarra, keep moving forward!
this was awesome! great history and for a great cause. By the way, that was 14 minutes of a continuous take that was awesome! you gotta know your stuff to do that in one take. As a musician I noticed.

Can you imagine the difference in weight balance between a full and empty tank of fuel? 48 gallons! What?! 🧐 that’s over 350lbs over the back wheels!
