Whisky (like any food or drink) is subjective. I think the Chivas 12yo is great. It was my first, and now after many years, it's still one of the best blended and one of my favorites.
Thanks
Hunter s thompson lived by it
First off, thank you for reviewing this whiskey. I always appreciate when whiskeytubers review common-man spirits. Now, I won't argue with your bottom line -- Chivas 12 is a serviceable whiskey in that it tastes perfectly fine but there's nothing particularly memorable about it. However, I personally can pick it out pretty easily from among other blends, so it isn't just a generic product. Also, when you consider the price and presentation, it's a good bang for your buck.
I always find the lower end spirits do better on this channel. I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I dont disagree with your point about it being serviceable for the price, however there are others I'd personally buy first.
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Can you please name a few alternatives?
Glenlivet 12, Balvenie 12, Glenmorangie (any)
bought one today, and I like it better than glenfiddich 12 and jonnie walker red, haven't compared it to the black but its up there imo
The fact it's uninteresting is why I like it. I am new to the depths of whiskey and stuff like Chivas are great for me.
I prefer Chivas 12 to Strathisla 12, but everyone is different. I heard many critiques of the Chivas 12 through the years, and so I didn't try it for a long time for myself. When I finally did try it I was pleasantly surprised. Then I tried the 18 year old, but that's another story.
This is a classic mixing whisky. Really mellow with Coke.
Going to try it that way
Chivas isn't meant to be a taste sensation for connoisseurs. It's a smooth affordable whiskey for older drinkers or people that like mixed drinks.
It's a blend you can drink without feeling the temptation to mix it. But it tasted great when mixed.
Looking forward to watch the 18 years old chivas review hope U give us ur opinion
Great video man! Hope your channel gets more attention, you certainly deserve it!
Thanks Slava!
This is so true. It was the first scotch I ever had and I was so let down. It made me think I didn’t like scotch which isn’t true at all.
I watched several videos of you, I really like the tastycons and your narrations. But the most interessting thing about watching your channel is, that your flavour palet is really different than mine, so that I wouldn´t enjoy some Whiskies as you, but its very educative for me.
That's pretty interesting actually. At least you've identified it so you can make some judgements based off my reviews
Bill, Interesting info. Back 40+ years ago in college this was the affluent dad's scotch. We didn't drink scotch just plain old Kessler's "Smooth as Silk" and Fleischmann's whiskey at under $4 a bottle. And for those special occasions that called for a mixed drink = Polish Stingers.
Happy New Year to all!!
The dark ages
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Yeah, I guess so. Then Jim Beam only had one choice and was "special" at $5. The "Dark Ages" always seemed to follow after just a few dollars worth of Kesslers and Schaefer beer. And the next morning was like the Spanish Inquisition!
My brother in law got me a bottle along with small bottles of the 15yr and 18yr. I finally opened the original 12yr. last night and I enjoyed it better than the Johnny Walker Dbl black. I agree on the nosing, but the taste was a bit better than I expected.
This is the very first Scotch I started with back in college. Nice review, Bill!
Thanks Ralph!
I feel the same about the 18 year as well. Having said that. The Mizunara cask is amazing
Tried it at a bar two nights ago. Expected to be let down after your review but was pleasantly surprised. Maybe it's because I came up drinking Cutty Sark and J&B (both of which i still consider good). Chivas is better than Glenlivet.
Thats a good versus episode idea. Either way I'm glad you liked it!
I've only had Chivas mixed with green tea. Apparently it's a thing, at least with the crowd I hung with up in Toronto. Give it a try!
My first drink and I still love it
I always learn something from your reviews. Back in the day I would drink Chivas in cocktails and I thought I was taking a step up. May be this is a step over from Cuttys, Dewars and J&B! I am now finding out what are the real quality scotch's!
I really wanted this to be my Scotch. At first, it seems a bit thin, but develops with a hint of smoke. The more I try this, the more I'm enjoy it. Easy drinker.
I agree completely
Thanks for your video, I agree with you. I can drink it but there are better out there. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Ralt!
I agree that this whisky is unimpressive. I will tell you, though, that it makes an interesting base for a solera bottle. I have now added in about 6 different single malts and am enjoying how it changes.
I actually just tried it a couple of days ago myself... Couldn't agree more, until my budget allows other wise I will stay with the Black & White over pretty much any blend
I agree, it's not that interesting. But there's nothing wrong with it. For a basic blend I'd pick a JW Black or a Dewars 12 year, but if all they have is Chivas, eh, sure I'll have a pour.
Got a bottle of this for Christmas. Not one I would have purchased myself, but as a gift, I figured I would try to appreciate it. Its a well known brand, you see it everywhere. Sounds like this one will be a good one to give to 'friends' who drink, but not to appreciate the complexity of a good scotch. Because the brand is well known, they won't feel slighted. I have a blended Scotch from Members Mark (Yes, Sams wholesale club has a scotch) that I give them now from a nice decanter so they will feel impressed, not slighted at the fact that this stuff is $21 for a half gallon.
Damn that's inexpensive. One of these days I'd like to tackle some of these major chain brands
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I saw where Aldi, a grocery store chain, has actually won some awards for theirs, and then I found out its only available in the EU. Oh well ......
Thanks for this - its such a well known bottle, that I always planned to pick one up just to see why its so popular. And now I won't bother. Cheers!
I’d like to get you to bother. It’s great I’ve tasted much more expensive bottle and for some reason I just like like this one better.
I agree about the nose, was on a flight last night and the guy in front of me ordered one on the rocks, I could smell it as it went by and I thought, "I could go for one of those."
Ive had that happen when at a bar and someone next to me ordered a whisky... its pavlovian to me at this point
Perhaps not an interesting pour, but you definitely made the video interesting.
I appreciate that a lot! Thanks
It is an entryway scotch in that it wont put anyone off. That is how I would sell it. Mild and easy to drink.
I've only tried a handful of scotches, as they tend to be pretty expensive in Arkansas and I'm on a college budget, but this is one I've tried. This is way better than J & B Rare in my opinion, but I was much more impressed by the Speyburn 10. Probably sounds like an Apples to Oranges comparison to someone who knows more about Scotch...
Speyburn 10 is an underrated scotch
Speyburn is unreal for the price, it costs more in Europe I found out
Used to drink this one regularly back in the days... LoL
I do enjoy this. But you should try the Chivas Regal Extra. Sherry cask aged. Delicious! Keep up the good work!
I actually did this one because I was curious what the higher end ranges are like
I've been drinking scotch for about four years now, my first was the glenmorangie 10 year old, loved it, I moved on to the Quinta ruban, the lasanta and the sauturne cask, my favorites are the ruban and the lasanta, but sometimes my budget doesn't mesh with the price, sometimes I drink Chivas regal because I don't care for smokey peaty scotch, is this a good choice, or do you have other suggestions? I love single malts, but I find Chivas a completed blend.
Just saw your review on Chivas, guess I'm not a scotch affiendado.
Hunter S Thompson
I really appreciate your honesty man
Very good for scotch related cocktails, Godfather, Rusty Nail etc. Good neat too.
While I 100% agree with your stance on this whisky I just got a bottle that belonged to my father. He’s been gone for 3 years now and I will savor every drop thinking of him. When it comes to blended scotch I do prefer Monkey Shoulder.
While I'm sorry to hear about your father, its nice to hear you have something to remember him by.
Got a bottle of crown royal salted caramel as a gift fro Christmas and I must say it might be my favorite flavor of crown. If you can get your hands on it you should try it!
Thanks for the recommendation!
I subscribed because you are honest about the whiskey. I am a beginner yet I got this Chivas and wow!!! It sucks lol. Keep making good videos
Welcome to the world of whisky. Prepare to spend all your money
In the beginning you said 80% abv lol
Yeeeeehawww
Hi Bill!! Happy new year!! I totally agree with you, average whisky, but nice for blend, the main minus that CR12 too weak in it's price range, very overpriced. Also I had CR18, a little bit better, but double priced. CR21 really nice, but not enought for whisky around $130-150, I'd like to get it in discount time.
I'm actually kind of excited to try some of the higher aged versions of CR
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary For me Extra and 18 it is updated CR12, but 21 you can find interesting. I recommend you dont leave CR on a shelf for a long time, it lose flavor extremely fast.
I wish you did that video earlier, because I am in a possession of Chivas for quite a while now as well...
Very fair assessment, Bill :)
It's okay to not like a whiskey or feel that it's not even worthy to be respected in the way it should be. I have personally not liked a few bottles that people love, so, some categories or brands are just not what you prefer and that's okay. I expect people will lean into the bottles they have acclimated their taste buds to.
I'm glad you agree. I tried Chivas for the first time 5 years ago when I was new to whiskey. I assumed based on popularity it was decent (even if not super complex), but I just really didn't care for it.
I was in the same boat. It was one of the first i bought
Chivas is my drink when I can't find Wiser's Oldest (18yr) Canadian blend but only on the rocks. It rests well with good ice (cubes). I don't care for drinking it straight. If you ever find Wiser's Oldest treat yourself.
I’m a new whiskey drinker and I’ve already found I prefer bourbon to scotch. I love more Smokey, sweet-ish bourbon. I really like wild turkey 80proof.
I respectfully disagree. No, it is not the best Scotch whiskey that I have had, however it tastes good to me, especially considering the price point. This goes to show that these things are certainly subjective. Nonetheless, thanks for posting, and I enjoyed the video...even though I disagree. :-) Cheers and God bless.
I'm glad you disagree. Variety is the spice of life and I love how subjective whisky can be. Thanks for the comment.
For what it's worth, I did put this as a good whisky for beginners
hi. i dont think i can agree with you on your review of chivas 12 years. i find it very smooth and satisfying. thats sad because most of your reviews are great. thx
I agree that its reasonably smooth. Satisfying is a different story for me personally. But the good news is that we all have a different palette and if you enjoy Chivas 12, that's great! Its inexpensive! For me personally it's not worth the money
In your Scotch beginner guide, you say "This is the first scotch that I consider to be complex" and you advocate for it, but here the review seems like the opposite, I'm curious if anything changed in the 1 year span between this and that video?
I think it is important to taste and talk about these too. Might not be great, but I bet lots of people can connect with it.
Absolutely.
I wish I could try Chivas but unfortunately, any scotch whiskey now gives me a bad burn of pain in my entire mouth unless heavily diluted with water. Maybe you should do a short video on how whiskey effects the your body's TRPV1 Receptor. Here is a snippet from an article:
"As the liquor engulfs your taste buds, its touch is focused on a very specific cell type. Situated in the delicate tissue that lines your mouth and throat are nerves that warn your body of extreme heat, among other things. They serve as your body’s thermometers, telling you that your morning coffee is hot, and tingle if it’s more than 108 degrees Fahrenheit. If you sip it too soon, at a more dangerous temperature, they burn in pain to protect you from doing it again. But these slim nerve cells are sensitive when they meet alcohol. The whiskey is a tease, tickling the nerves and leaving them more responsive in its wake."
It would be nice to be able to sip scotch on the rocks again, but my body won't tolerate it unless it's a scotch & soda.
wow, thx I might have tried chivas 30 years ago, have been doing mostly bourbons, gonna try a scotch.... it wont be chivas :-)
It's a mixer like crown royal , J walker RED , and a lot of low end whiskeys , lol
Other than being very smooth, there's not much going on here. I don't think I'd buy it again, but for sure, I'll finish the bottle...
Chivas 12 is fine if you are just looking for an easy sipping Scotch that is available and cheap. It is not interesting or fantastic in my opinion.
Congrats on the 30k!!!!
I've got to be honest, I'm coming to the conclusion that I don't care about coloring. The chill filtering, though, I'm pretty sure does detract from the flavor profile. I suppose some day, I do need to try this, just to see if I can tell the difference.
@Flood Light Out of curiosity, why? And, does it matter if they're adding a tiny amount in to keep a consistent color from batch to batch of the same product, or if they're adding way more in than needs to be in order to make it appear older?
Hope you do BALVENIE 12 YEAR OLD DOUBLEWOOD next year
Me too!
This Whiskey is the reason I thought I didn’t like Whiskey for a very long time. Aspartame... I agree.
I'm glad you came to your senses
Have you tried the 18?
Not to my recollection... but possibly... either way I'm eager to
I'm new to whisky world, I want your suggestion between johnnie Walker 12 black label and chivas 12
JW Black
Can you provide what's on your "try it" "buy it" "stock it" lists? I want to start watching your reviews of stuff on your "stock it" whiskeys first
That's a good idea and one that's come up a few times. I'll look at making some playlists
This scotch is actually on the thumbnail of the video of your “Definitive beginners scotch guide” and you said it was the beginning of scotch that’s complex and you recommended it. Now, not so much?
Although I did change my mind a bit, it's more about intent. This whisky won't make people who love whisky happy or excited... but if you're just starting out? It's ok because it's boring
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I understand, I was just a little confused but yes I’ve had my palate change over the years and whisky I thought I liked, I don’t buy anymore. Mostly bourbons….I just like Scotch so much more.
Totally agree with you
About on par with Dewars at double the price... It's "ok" but not worth the money $$ Johnny Walker Black is a better whiskey at this price point. The 18 year Chivas is a little better but obviously more $$ ☺
I had seen another video where you had scotch reviews for people new to scotch and this was on the list. I was trying to decide among Monkey Shoulder and this and based on your other video I went with Chivas. I quickly noticed how unremarkable it was. I had just finished a bottle of Tullamore DEW a few days prior and that had so much complexity and I wish I would have just gone with another Irish whiskey.
I guess I'll have to pour a little Four Roses into my glencairn when this glass is done so I can have a bit of joy. 😂
Sorry about that. Chivas is a good starter scotch... but not very good past that
Dangerous..i can drink this like a water.. since it doesn't have much or strong flavor. Definitely a beginner drink. Great review!
That's definitely the danger to chivas.
Hi Bill , thanks for the video , I remember I tried this once , it was a while back somewhere between Cutty Sark vs Dewars White Label !!.
I totally agree with your review , by the way , my favorite drinking glass is a Cutty Sark branded glasss I picked up about 40 + years ago .
Aside from what I am about to say , but Bill it`s blended LOL , to me the blended scotches have an almost stingy after taste.
Thanks for your video , I honestly enjoyed it :)
I hope you and yours have a Super Fantastic New Year , all my best , take care , Gary
Finally! This was the first scotch I ever had so I like it more than I ought to. But my experience is summed up perfectly in this video... it felt lacking in most ways as far as flavor goes. Good, decent. Not for the money though.
Thanks! It's tough to ignore the first whisky even if you realize its not so good... I get that way about JW Black... at least its decent, but I probably recommend it to people more than I aught to
I've had about a dozen whiskys at this point and I find this smooth but I just don't care for the flavor.
Thats a great evolution!
This is a whisky that working-class people think is high end. I don't like it. The 60% grain in the bill makes it unlike malt scotches and it doesn't suit my palate at all.
Could that "false" sweetness be anything like Stevia?
Stevia is a natural sweetner that's plant based. I'm not a fan of it, but the wife loves it.
Yes sir. I was hesitant to say that
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary
That sweet note, for me at least = Stevia
On a Joe Rogan Elon Musk interview on youtube they had a bottle of "Old Camp" whisky, is it possible to do a review on that whisky please?
I'll see if I can find one
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Thank you so much for your timely response! I hope you can find a bottle and do a video please, I will be looking forward to you. I really enjoy your videos.
No problem! Thanks for watching
Yeah I drank my father's bottle of this=it sucks I had to replace it😕
My apologies for being nebulous. My foray into whiskey was Chivas. It’s still the worst for me.
I see it all the time, glad I haven't spent any money on it.
It does make a fine whiskey sour.
I havent tried that yet... I still have some left maybe I'll give it a try
I find it hard to understand the review. Just over a Year ago this was one of your must get whisky's in the "Definitive Beginner Buying Guide". What has changed.
It's still something for a beginner to try, but it's not something that will keep people around
Got the smallest bottle, not crazy about it, won’t even save it for the guests, might as well get buzzed.
I prefered the buchanans green label more.
Yeah...I couldn't agree more with you....it's kinda bland, rather have JW Black..
Chivas taste like a watered down speyside to me
I'd say even more boring than that
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I have some rn, I catch apples/pears in both the nose and taste but also I've been drinking nothing but speyside for a month so maybe that's why
Just bought my first highland park and glennlivet 5 minutes ago ayyyy
It's 40% ABV. 80 Proof is not 80%.
80% abv? 🤔
I wish. Flubs happen
You complain too much. Me and my homies have this straight from bag in bottle in the hood and it's great
This dude said 80% abv.
Hah, we could only hope
What about whiskey attracts you?
I had to think about this answer for a little while before answering. I think for me it's that whenever I have a new expression it could end up being my favorite of all time... from a 20 dollar larceny to a 600 dollar old pultney. Any whisky can be great and I'm sure my favorite whisky is still out there waiting for me to try it.
This is expensive for me😢 wisky is expensive where I live.
Where are you? Australia?
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Turkey. Better wiskys are really expensive here. Taxes are insane here for alcholic drinks.
That's a huge bummer:(
Chevals 12 years is 50 here in Australia and the 18 is 100
You poor Australians... everything is trying to kill you AND your alcohol is expensive
I feel the exact same way. Just a mouthful of disappointment.
He’s right.
Also, it’s expensive and it’s horrible.
Relatively speaking, it's not very expensive, for Scotch.
80% ABV??????
Super Duper Cask Strength
Ooo those nasty blends!!!
"80 % abv" nice
Hah! We all wish
This is the best whiskey for the money. Maybe you tried a fake one.
Werewolf O. London, Esq. I don’t know, but for me it’s perfect.
I love you

Whiskey Dic, What kind of drunk are you?
Philosophical... I'm the worst :)
Jajajaja thank you for your time, I'm gonna skip that one
