"In this life" actually is about two friends of hers who died because of Aids. One of them is Martin Burgoyne, a plastic artist and the other one was Christopher Flynn, her ballet teacher who introduced her into the LGBT community.

Regarding In This Life: Madonna was one of the only public figures that stuck up for the LGBTQ+ community the way that she did. She personally visited people in hospitals that were being "treated" for hiv/aids and sat and talked with them and hugged them. She did people a kindness that others would not because they "didn't want to catch it". She had the nerve to speak up and raise awareness to the damage that the disease was causing and how horrible it was that the public was pretending like it wasn't happening. She was risking so much because of the stigma surrounding hiv/aids and the lgbtq+ community. Because of her, attention was brought to the issue and other public figures followed suit in raising money and awareness to find a cure. What's crazy is that this isn't even the tip of the iceberg regarding Madonna's impact on not only music but society as a whole. A true icon honestly

"Post-Erotica, Madonna started exploring sophisticated, more mature dance pop-and relaxed her provocative instincts.
But few women artists, before or since Erotica, have been so outspoken about their fantasies and desires. Madonna made it clear that shame and sexuality are mutually exclusive. In the end, Erotica embraced and espoused pleasure, and kept Madonna at the forefront of pop’s sexual revolution."

This is my favorite Madonna album, it just seems to get better and better with each listen.
Since this era was so controversial for her, it was very underrated and underperformed. What's funny is that there are only two tracks, "Erotica" and "Where Life Begins," that are explicitly sexual. The rest of the sexuality is in the subtext, it in the double entendres.
She actually wrote the song "Human Nature" from her next album, Bedtime Stories, as a response to the criticism she faced in the Erotica era.

I was born in 82 and my sister is ten years older than me, needless to say we grew up Madonna. Madonna was so omnipresent in the 80s and 90s it’s not easy to convey her influence because today’s media landscape is so different and there are truly no artists like her. The women artists today have traction because of what she fought for. Everything she did was extremely controversial and ground breaking. I can’t think of any artists today, as much as I love Lady Gaga and Bey (I do) you just don’t see artists who have the Vatican coming after them and the attacks and censorship Madonna dealt with and that’s because Madonna dealt with it the new artists don’t have to. I remember being a toddler waiting with my sister to watch Lucky Star on MTV and staring at my sisters Madonna album covers committing every detail to memory, then as I got older, MTV would host Madonna days and Madonna weekends, with her videos and only her videos back to back to back. I would just sit and absorb Madonna. We all did. She led the way every year of my life like a pop cultural icon of womanhood phenomenon that she is. Who’s That Girl and Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy, Truth Or Dare, A League Of Their Own, my little girlfriends and I had to wait for and watch and study everything she did, repeatedly. You have people today who act shocked and shook about soft core mock bdsm like Fifty Shades, Madonna was going ten times farther thirty years earlier. Porn was not easily accessible at the time, the cultural zeitgeist was completely different, nobody was doing anything like it until Madonna did it, and then she went and did something else. My sister had a bootleg copy of The Girly Tour on vhs, it only aired on HBO or Showtime or Cinemax, those were the racy channels back then that only boujee people had, and way tamer pre sex and the city, but the girly tour was 🔥 I was a little girl and used to masturbate to it, my sisters friend had like burned it on tape and I watched it fanatically. There would be no Gwen, GaGa, Pink, Christina, Britney and so many more without Madonna. Thank you for paying attention to her work, she is a revolutionary. It’s just hard to fathom in today’s society, how hard a cutting edge this was. Gender bending, androgyny, being a woman multi media mogul, cone bras and mixed media, it was all 😳✊🏻 and yes how vocal and inclusive she has always been regarding the lgbtq+ community, people were afraid of her. She got her foot in the door with pop music and then challenged and defied everyone’s expectations of women and sex and performance art, she dominated and refused to quit.

Without Erotica there is no Beyonce, Katie Perry, Lady Gaga, Brittany Spears or Lana Del Rey.
The media, political leaders and religious leaders called for people to boycott her during this time. She suffered a lot. In fact, when asked what the most controversial thing she has done, her reply was sticking around. So many people were hating her at this time. It would have been the end for most artists but Madonna proved why she's the Queen by releasing Bedtime Stories. On the surface it's much softer and helped create an image that people could tolerate but she added a song (Human Nature) as a big fu! To her critics.

Awesome! What I like about this album is how sexual it is, with songs about BDSM like "Erotica" and about oral sex like "Where Life Begins", but at the same time is a very dark album with very sad songs like "Bad Girl" where she says she's not happy living that way, and songs about social issues like "Why's it so hard" and"In This Life" that she wrote about two of her dear friends who died of Aids. I think she thought she was gonna make an album about sex, but she couldn't help bringing her heart into it and making it an emotional album about relationships, loss, loneliness, insecurities and even death. And that makes it one of her most vulnerable and intimate works. Definitely an album to sit down and listen to paying attention. Great review as always! Can't wait for Confessions! and you should also react to American Life which to me has the best lyrics along with Ray of Light and Like a Prayer.

Erotica is the first album I ever bought and is definitely the bridge between party girl Madonna and mature artist Madonna.
It also is totally a breakup album since it's her first after divorcing Sean Penn who she's called the love of her life. Words is about him and Thief of Hearts is about Robin Wright from The Princess Bride and House of Cards who Madonna blamed for the ultimate breakdown in their marriage
Her entire marriage to Guy Ritchie can be traced through Music, American Life, Hard Candy, MDNA and Rebel Heart. He really did a number her.

I think it perfectly ends with secret garden. ‘Did you do it’ Which is like a progress on ‘Waiting’ but using the song not only spoils the original song ‘Waiting’ for me also it doesn’t fit on the album.

I know you said you're doing Confessions next, but I would be interested to see you react to her albums in order so you can experience her creative/personal evolution chronologically. You've sort of done that here (although I'm Breathless was released in between and you should absolutely react to that at some point). The “ finger licking good” line is cringeworthy I agree 😬.. However looking back at this early ( very early ) 90’s album I’m impressed at her ability to incorporate hip hop and new jack swing and even jazz elements. That was pretty groundbreaking at that time for a white female artist from the mid west. , and to do so convincingly! She always had a knack for incorporating different genres into her albums, I appreciate that.

To me Erotica has always been the postmodern version of her True Blue album which was all about making a connection and being in love. What I mean is she always tries to make a connection with someone on Erotica as well, yet she is never quite successful. Falling in love is almost like a complex glimpse of an idea and she is never quite successful in fully exploring it. It’s very much a deconstruction of love and ultimately the result is incomplete and quite dissatisfying. Confessions and Madame X are very good albums to react to from here onwards.

For many Madonna diehard fans, this album is part of the "Madonna holy trinity" which are often considered to be her best albums: Ray of Light, Like A Prayer, and Erotica. While Erotica received lukewarm reviews at the times of its release (as Madonna was experiencing a backlash), through time, a lot of critics have come back and recognized how strong of an album Erotica is. It's not necessarily a big catchy album by any means. But it was quite a brave album from her for its time, both sonically, and lyrically.

I’ve loved Madonna for almost 40 years and your interpretation of her album and catalogue is insightful and thoughtful. Well done! Subscribed! 😉. This is one of the first times that Madonna really veered away from straight up pop influences and created a very icy production, complete with an underground elements of techno, house and new jack swing. It led the way to many stylistic shifts throughout her musical journey, but it is arguably the most brazen and fearless.

I think you would really like Rebel heart. To me, it's Madonna's best album since confessions and it has some of her best songs. The album represents the 2 biggest sides of her personality, the rebel, and the romantic. The album is basically a journey through Madonna's life and career. I would recommend the deluxe version which has 19 songs, but those extra songs are necessary to get the full experience. Also I wouldn't recommend listening to "Did you do it?" Only because it takes the production of "waiting" and removes Madonna's vocals and 2 rappers rap over it. Also, if you listen to Bedtime Stories, it leans more heavily on R&B than Erotica and it's very soft in comparison.

This wasn’t a bonus track - It’s just missing from what was originally the ‘cleaner’ version of the album. When my friends and I bought Erotica upon release we all had the version with Did You Do It and I always miss it when people leave it out.
Also, I’ve heard it said that Deeper and Deeper is about a young gay man coming out. Could be though often M’s lyrics are a combination of a story about someone or something mixed with some autobiographical context and comment about the world at large.

You were again thoughtful and I'm glad you immediately picked up on that this album is as much about relationships as it is about sex, and people at a time did not really get that. However, Erotica is not easy to listen to and love instantly. Mainly because I don't think she meant to be really vulnerable, or explore deep emotion. This was actually documenting fast experiences and short term relationship of an independent, almost promiscuous woman. I always felt like this was a textbook for Samantha Jones character. And that's why the entire production is cold and detached. So much that in bye bye baby she is not even breaking up in person, but over a voicemail message. One thing you might've not picked up on is that actually 3 songs are directly about gay people's experience. Deeper and deeper is actually a story about coming out, Why's it so hard is mostly about gay rights, and In this life about friends lost to aids (not same friend as in Spanish eyes, this was about her dance teacher who inspired her to move to NY and who was a first gay man she knew, and the other is Keith Herring, her early friend in NY). It's a social commentary about society rejecting to deal with anyone expressing their sexuality, and her rebellion against the stance that a woman cannot be smart and sexually open at the same time. Believe it or not, yes, society was really condemning women being openly sexual back then, actually so much, that the first people to attack this record were feminists! Funnily enough, in today's feminism, this record is considered one of key moments for women's liberation. So Madonna was just as always only ahead of her time, and this record got universal praise only in future, but back then, it almost killed her career
The amount of bad press and backlash she received for the first time in her career universally was probably worse then all other pop stars' fallouts combined. Just because she dared to talk about a period of life where she couldn't emotionally connect and her lovers were disposable and decided to talk about these instant experiences in an intellectual way, like a diary of an emancipated woman dating like a man would without getting criticised. That's why I'd love if you let this record sink in and listen to Bedtime stories next, because that record was almost a direct response to Erotica and backlash that followed it. Thank you again for providing your point of view and sorry for the long post :)

Oh also if you already decided to react to Confessions on a dance floor next (although I think that album is only fully appreciated after listening to American life) make sure you listen to original version of the album which played without stopping, mixed like a DJ set. I noticed people who reacted to it previously listen to unmixed version which appeared only later for streaming services, and for me personally, it kills some of the magic

Mister Eric. I so enjoy your reactions. They have an almost psychoanalytic perspective. I would be interested in you reviewing confessions of course, but even her more recent albums like rebel heart or Madame X. The general public has for the most part has dismissed her citing her out of touch approach to art these days, some say it’s straight up ageism . I am not a good judge nor can I be objective being a long time fan. I do think her last album stunk ! I would be interested in hearing your take. You are extremely handsome btw

As a lifelong Madonna fan I can appreciate the thought and provoking of ones views she can make on people. But as Madonna has stated in the past. Not all her songs are so literal! She hears stories from people, be it a friend, a driver, a stripper-yes she has stripper friends- and bends them to her will. She adds flavor and a story line and makes it her own. Then other songs come directly from her life. This album has both.

For someone who has been listening to Madonna from the very beginning, it's refreshing to hear from someone like you analyzing the lyrics and themes of her albums. It gives the songs new meanings and perspectives i never thought before. Looking forward to more Madonna reactions.
I don't really know about upcoming releases but since you have been listening to some albums from the 1990/2000s (Janet, Kylie, Bjork) i suggest for you continue doing that and consider the following:
    1. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
    2. Jewel - Pieces of You and Spirit
    3. Sarah McLachlan - Surfacing and Afterglow
    4. Gwen Stefani - Love Angel Music Baby
    5. Aaliyah - Aaliyah
    6. All Saints - Sinner and Saints
I mean, the list goes on and on! Hope your channel grows.

And the reggae influences ''Why's it so Hard'' is because the vacation of Shep Pettibone. During the recording of this album (winter 1991-1992), Shep Pettibone was in vacation in Jamaica and listen the music reggae during this time. When he return to works, he didn't off this style of music of his head. Her write and create the base line before to listen at Madonna. When he finished the base line, he heard it for Madonna and she loved it and she written the lyrics then will become this song.

For info, the cover of ''Fever'' was a accident, because she wanted to sing the original lyrics of the lyrics of a song called ''Goodbye to Innocence''. Originally, she sing this song with a different base line and she didn't like the base line so, Shep create a new base of line when she loves it. When she wanted to recording ''Goodbye to Innocence'', instead to singing the original lyrics, she sing the lyrics of ''Fever'' to this base line. So Madonna decided to cover because this base line was fit better and abandonned the original lyrics.
Later, she released ''Goodbye to Innocence'' (with the original bass line then she didn't like it) for a CD called ''Just say Roe'' released in 1993.

Are you familiar with the music of Pet Shop Boys, and would you consider doing their catalog? I think their sophomore album Actually would be a great place to start, possibly followed by their 1990 album Behaviour which is often cited as their best work by critics.
Cheers from Minneapolis. Love your thoughtful analysis and perspective. I don’t normally gravitate to reaction videos as they are too often self indulgent and (lets be honest) pointless. As someone whose been a Madonna fan since first seeing the Material Girl video on MTV in 1984, I was surprised to hear such a nuanced perspective of the music and lyrics. 👍

Fever is not the opposite of Erotica.
By going back to the Fever era, she makes sure that we understand that the theme of love and sexuality is timeless!
The most famous version of Fever by the way was performed by Elvis - which is statement in itself!
The album deals with different aspects of LOVE.
As I stated in a comment on your Like A Prayer album reaction, in Erotica she dealt with the more provocative and physical aspects of love (Sex, violence, S&M, betrayal, AIDS and eroticism)
Just like her SEX book, Erotica sounds raw, not overtly edited both vocally and conceptually. It is a collage of ideas.
Most of the songs she performed in one take!
That is difficult for you to connect the songs to each other! Because they do not necessarily relate to each other.
Of course one can read many things into everything.
Just in case someone is interested in another great pop album check out Jody Watley's third album "Affairs Of The Heart".
As a fellow pop icon who worked with many of the same people (Jean Paul Gaultier, David Fincher, Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, Patrick Leonard and Fransoise Nars) her album is a befitting artistic reply to Erotica!
Jody's legendary grammy winning first solo album mirrors Janets Control and Madonnas First album!
