the very first Madonna album I had listened to from start to finish... no one has ever had the album release campaign like what this had back in the day. This is when I had become a fully fledged Madonna fan (outside the realm of singles). Madonna owned ‘92!!!

The reason you didn’t realise Madonna dies at the end of the ‘Bad Girl’ videos is because TV stations in Australia would cut the last 2 mins of the video. For years I thought the video never made sense as it was cut so abruptly. Then years later I saw the full uncut video which completes the narrative and I had that ‘ah ha’ moment. Love that video, one of my favourite M videos.

I think what’s more beautiful about Erotica is that with this album she closed the door for the 80’s Madonna and started taking risks musically and aesthetically. The album is awesome and it was avant-garde, groundbreaking, new and different. Like it happened to Kyle, it happened to me. It was an open minder about sex to me. Not that I am a BDSM adept, but it was liberating.

What's unclassy about the sex book? It wasn't called, "kinda sexual and vaguely naughty" it was called SEX, it does what it says on the tin. But can smut not be classy, or art? Isn't that what the whole point of the book was in the first place?
It *was* and *is* classy! Squatting over a hand mirror etc etc, these were images that were entirely confrontational because they were helmed by a)a woman and b) the subject of the photograph, HUGELY important and undeniably classy In it's purposeful smuttiness

Thanks for this review. To the host: Thank you for sounding so smooth throughout, you were brilliant. Erotica is a very brilliant album but oddly I wasn't very excited about it upon its release. But it's in my top 5. This album fiercely called out the hypocrisy that Madonna had been exposing ("Just look in the mirror baby" - Waiting) and that's why it stands out for me.
It's ridiculous when the title "Queen" is used on other female artists who have not even earned it; they don't have the battle scars that Madonna etched in her history: "She's not me and she never will be"

  • @firouz4296

I never understood why people called it a flop.
Considering it was part of a multi-leveled promotion Campagne (the Meisel pics were used for both the CD and the SEX book are proof of that...), it did very well, and combined with the money that the book made, it was a multi-million dollar success!
I never cared for most Madonna fans (still don't) but that album is raw, gritty, and actually not really well thought!
Most songs were sung in one or two takes and she barely spent time in the studio...
That is why it still sounds odd and has so much charm.

I don't remember much of her from the time of erotica. I think i still associated her with Breathless Mahoney 😂. I started to listen to her when I heard Secret, but now erotica I think is her best album.

  • @firouz4296

There was an artistic back and forth between Madonna and Jody Watley around 1990/91.
Jody had previously worked with almost all key people in Madonna's artistic universe
(David Fincher, Jean-Paul Gautlier, Steven Meisel, Francois Nars, Herb Ritts, Patrick Leonard etc.)
and had done many things before Madonna made them mainstream. (I am not going to get into that subject too deep. The old (club)kids will know what I am talking about...)
But Jody's album "Affairs Of The Heart" is a direct answer to Madonna's "Erotica"!
The album was delayed and the record company did not promote it because Jody was pregnant and had decided to "keep her baby" (no pun intended)
Go and listen to it! You will completely get what I am saying - and hopefully love it as much as I do!
I have personally witnessed how Jody was handed a book and a note from Madonna after a live show in 2007 in London (around the time Jody had covered her song "Borderline"), so I assume they are not enemies...

I just realized that the front and back album covers for Madonna's Erotica and Kylie Minogue's X have similarities design-wise lol also because of the promotion of this album, everyone thought every song was gonna be hardcore sex when it fact there are only a few racy-at-the-time songs. But like I say, better late than never! It reminds me of all the writers, musicians and artists who became famous posthumously but at least Madonna knows this album is alot more appreciated and understood now so she can perform songs now in future tours that people can enjoy 😊

She experienced a storm then created a rainbow. That's beautiful to me.

I’m not sure I would call the book “classy,” but looking back, it was mostly artistic and relatively restrained. M got crucified by the media for it both going too far AND not far enough! What hasn’t aged well is the the text throughout the book, it’s not particularly funny or erotic. The pictures remain iconic. Some modern pop-stars may pose nude. None have surpassed SEX in it’s sheer audacity, or a willingness to nakedly (heh) put out something genuinely shocking for public ✌️

  • @ymd2516

This is one of Madonna’s most fascinating eras. I wasn’t born when the album came out so I don’t know what it was like to be in the media hype around it.
I like the album a lot but like Impossible Princess by Kylie, it’s been called underrated so many times they’re almost overrated. Nonetheless, I think both albums were necessary in legitimising both artists (hindsight of knowing they bounced back from initial backlash)
I’m a fan of both the sex book and body of evidence (so bad it’s good) but it’s frustrating how they overshadow such a great album.
I find Erotica so chic and it’s like 90s Madonna has fully evolved into a woman from a music perspective.

This is Madonna's love letter to her gay fans. It is the most radical step a major mainstream pop star has ever taken. Releasing it with the Sex book was the demise of this album. People focused on the controversy and overlooked the music. Erotica is Madonna's dark, gritty masterpiece. Many sex songs that came after this, especially those truly explicit rap / hip-hop sex jams that are ubiquitous these days - those are mostly trashy, and compared to those, tracks such as Erotica, Where Life Begins and Secret Garden are poetry. She did go too far during the promotion of this album, but whatever sexual expression many female artists get away with these days, they owe it to Madonna (especially this era) and Janet (during her janet. period, especially for black female artists).
