Kirsty Wark and Morgan Quaintance visit the Royal Academy as it prepares for its annual artistic extravaganza. They meet the cast of people who have come together to make the show unique - Michael Craig-Martin, the godfather of Brit Art, in his role as chief curator, singer/songwriter Jessie Ware as she leads the charge at the opening night party, and a handful of talented aspiring artists from across the nation who submitted their paintings in hope of a place in this hallowed institution.
Everybody gets a chance, an art freeforall, submit your painting and hope for the best.

i watched this yesterday on bbc iplayer and i only made it through 11 mins because allot of the things i saw and heard sounded and looked shit, and i did not want to waste anymore time. the earlier royal academicians must be rolling in their graves.
Wow, sad most of the comments are from people who have COMPLETELY missed the point of art..
It is to the great credit of the Royal Academy that they sponsor these exhibitions. However, my sense is that 99.9% of these "art" objects will end up in garage sales and waste cans after one or two generations. What has happened to art? Art should immediately propel you into some glorious territory, and the effects should last for years. Can anyone forget the passion of Bosch, or the Van Eycks? And if you think my education never made it past the 15th Century, a wonderful Magritte, or de Kooning will do just as well. I think it's wonderful that ordinary people get their 15 minutes of fame, but let's not suffer delusions as to the actual merit of the works. And, please, a grey triangle is not art. (and neither was that insipid Jasper Johns.....please do not be fooled by a name.

Fuck, it's depressing from the outset and already I'm rattled by the typical BBC pretence of it being an inclusive show " it's not just a show for the established and famous "....errr oh yes it is!! And seriously!!? That picture of Simon Cowell by some shitty amatuer, got in! Plus Una Stubbs and Harry Hill ( at least Harry Hill had the honesty not to take it seriously!)..the world is fuckin mad, no wonder sincere artists like me get so depressed!

Neen88 I agree it requires "heart and soul" that's my whole point! Very little of that in the show does...unfortunately you clearly don't get it, and not a snob, just believe in that painting used to be one of the greatest crafts and now it's reduced to talentless portraits of Simon Cowel

I couldn't agree more with you, Quikjl! They by pass masterpieces and show celebrity charlatans who are considered by prats to be artists, then their unbelievably shit pictures, art work and sculptors get chosen! Seriously! 'Emperor's New Clothes!' With best wishes truth teller! Cheers - Mike.
