    First broadcast: Jun 2013.
Now in its 245th year, and with 12,000 submissions, the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition is the largest open art exhibition in the world. In this Culture Show special, art critic Alastair Sooke asks what makes someone an artist and why do they do it? He hears from curators, art dealers, and of course the artists themselves.
From Sunday painters to international contemporary artists, from traditional landscapes to giant sculptures made from bottle tops, the Summer Exhibition is the British art scene laid bare.

The notable artists as judges are now being critics at this point and the quick process that the use is hardly judging is not a good method, maybe for the efficiency of the number of artworks but I think it should be as well by the public, collectors the ones that really matter in the end I think. We keep giving away the power of what we the people commonly like and want to the critics, auction houses, elitists, Etc... Thus the art bubble is out of control and or manipulated. The Royal Acadamy gets the last word sort of speak at the end of the day so it's all an illusion of what is Good, Liked, and Accepted. I liked the part where the top level art dealer in the Royal Acadamy vault said she would bye that artwork but all of them would not have it in her gallery. So personal taste versus the corrupted art market money rules. As an art collector, I have the utmost respect for these artists that have entered Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

I specialise in the art of the brown. I think all these critics have the necessary refinement of taste to appreciate that

Don't get me wrong, there is some really good stuff that has been entered but I just love these prats with too much money buying overrated piss for a small fortune that has been considered to be art!
