Domain Name "Service" not system. Changing DNS will reduced "perceived" latency... Not the actual physical latency. There is this thing called the speed of light and hop speed latency (per each hop it will add sometime like .8 to 1ms per device interface) ....The latency you talk about is name resolution delay not latency.
Ever since I bought Starlink I have been looking for information about setting it up to work with a Apple Airport WIFI router. I have contacted Starlink and they continued to give no information. I have looked at every search, and as many "professionals" with RUclips videos and still find nothing. My question: What are the setup? Is it 1,) " DHCP" 2.) "DHCP and NAT" or 3.) Bridge Mode? Do you have to restart the Starlink Dish to reconnect? If none of these work .. then how come because Apple is one of the most popular systems on the planet? If this is just a Starlink Gen 2 issue ... then can you show that the Startlink Gen 3 can work with the Apple Airport? I am shocked that there is NO ONE who has such information available, Apple Airport wrks seemlessly with their products .. and have features I have been using without problems for decades. I am impressed with your knowledge and ability to communicate. Loved this video. I thank you for taking the time to make this understandable to newbies.
❤❤❤ Thank you soooooo much sir for showing me how to set up the best primary, secondary, and tertiary DNS servers!!! FYI you can add a 3rd, 4th and 5th backup DNS server in the Starlink app now!
Hey there Jay, just seen this video and switched my setting to your exact recommendations. And I immediately got an 25-30ms increase. Appreciate the video and it was very informative.
I see a couple of problems with this analysis but I'm old an could be wrong. Using ICMP PIng to gauge network performance/latency for DNS traffic isnt not the best way due to most big time peering point routers deprioritize IMCP traffic. You should try using DIG and pick some domains you freqeuent and as the record TTL expires do your qeury to the server your wanting to test. Pay attention to the Query time response.... The DNS server with the faster Query times after TTL would be the winner in my opinon. 🙂
Enjoyed the WIFI, but Starlink's customer service is close to worthless. Had it not been for Mr. Christina's videos I would not have figured out how to "communicate" with Starlink. The email and thumbs down method gave me access, but Starlink's responses to simple questions were ridiculous ! After 3 months I sold my "Roam" gear and transferred my serial # etc to someone else. Again thank you Mr. Christina for all your videos/help ! After reading other comments below, I can see that the monthly cost will continue to rise and make it prohibitive. I don't do a lot of streaming or downloading so my phone carriers WIFI (Mint) is just fine. I also see I paid $100 more through Starlink to buy my gear, when I could have purchased through Best Buy !
I just wanted to tell you that watching these videos that you make and edit to teach us how to use and learn these things. That they really bring me closer to completing what it is I’m trying to do and learn. I guess to not keep unnecessarily dragging on and on and on and on and on about things that really aren’t what I’m trying to say to you is that I guess you could say it is helpful
Within the coming months we will be moving into a new home within a rural-type area, unincorporated, with a horrifically terrible cable internet provider. This places us as a bulls-eye for Starlink. And you are right, in the past I used primary and secondary DNS from the same company, so you make perfect sense not to, having explained it, thank you! I'm also happy to know that Starlink has now a 3rd generation and the benefit the new generation provides, thanks to you.
For those who use a different router and are tech-savy, a good solution on top of this is a solution like a AdGuard Home or a Pi-Hole. This can help as well as it will block all the advertising as well as have more than 2 DNS providers. I have 8 configured for redundancy.
This is great - I am off grid in SE Alaska and need to do my day job as a drafter. I had to choose Open DNS as my primary and CloudFlare as my secondary.
Now that, was a particularly interesting video, thank you. I live in a low population area in North West France, and my internet provider is so bad we still have copper wire and the horror stories I hear about how badly the "up grade" to fibre would make even your hair curl. I need speed and reliability which is why I am looking into Starlink as a possible option. Like you I make 'how to' videos for RUclips. The last 18 minute video I made took over 5 hours to up load. Enough said! Keep up the good work - Tony Hillyard
Wow! That was awesome! Thanks for the new update and why/how. I made the changes and right away, my DL and UL speeds improved by about 25% on my first test. I'll continue to test this. Thanks again!
@@jcristina Well maybe I was so expectant that I "saw" a change. Lol. That is possible. But, since I made the change, I really have noticed an improvement in my speeds. I've been experiencing unstable and slow speeds over the last few months with no help from starlink support, so I've been sensitive to any positive changes. I'll keep on testing. Thanks again for ALL your info. I watch you a lot. 🙂
This may reduce latency to a DNS but it does not reduce latency to web sites and/or other IP services. You can't make a web site respond faster (over and over) just by changing the DNS. The traffic still flows to and from web sites and that transmission/reception is not affected by DNS other than the initial site/host name address resolution.
@@jcristina Between Google DNS, Cloudflare DNS and OpenDNS ... error free DNS resolution is there (they are all "anycast" DNS) and the response time isn't much different.
I have my Starlink on bypass and use a unfi network. Do I just reset starlink and put in the dns and then bypass again or just leave it and my unfi network will work. Thanks
This is accurate, very misleading video. Spamming a DNS server with pings is in no way representative of latency or speed to the server you’re actually establishing a connection to after the DNS lookup. 2 totally separate things.
Like the way you breakdown DNS and all those technical terms am subscribing to your channel. Do give more talks explaining how we can apply these internet terms
What a great explanation! Thank you for helping me understand DNS. I am on Starlink's wait list, and I appreciate all the information you share with us.
Since we talked about this on friday night live chat, I've seen an improvement in random sites and apps that seem to freeze in the initial loading stage. Early days but hoping this is going to be the final fix in what has become a very stable ISP!
Good info, however, I took their router out of my loop and use a TP-Link router. I use Google as my primary DNS and Cloudflare as my secondary. It helps... it really does.
so do I and it's exhausting trying to figure out better options during peak hours when trying to play fps games. packet loss and burst every 2 or 3 minutes is unreasonable.
If you turn on the filtering for malware it will change the dns to 1.1.1.2 and 1.0.0.2 and if malware and adult is turned on it uses 1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3 with Cloudflare
So I have mine set up with the Wi-Fi turned off on my star link router and then putting the data into a TP Link router and using that for my Wi-Fi. Do I still do the DNS in the star link or do I do it in the TP router?
Great video, I do have a question, nothing to do with this video but I recently did a firmware update on the Starlink Gen 2 router, since doing the update my deco mesh system and my security cameras internet seems to be on and off, it appears that it temporary looses internet. They all worked perfectly well before the update. I reset the Starlink router back to factory, I removed and reconnected my Deco mesh system and security cameras, issue still present. I have contacted Starlink support but as far as they are concerned, Starlink is working fine. Has anybody else had this issue?
Thanks Joe, super interesting video. I'm a 64 yr old who is very Non-tech. Your vids have helped us with our Starlink a great deal(also your photo vids, as I am a biginner). hopefully my question isn,t too elementary for yjis channel. Since my POP is in Seattle WA, 600 miles from my home in the Sierra Nevada Mts., will this DNS test tell me the best primary in my router location, or is it telling me the best in Seattle, or just the best to use as my system exists now? I ask because to This point in time I have failed to get them to switch my POP tp a closer location, but if they ever do, I'm guessing I would need to do the test again. I love your content and commend you on bringing info thats pretty overwhelming for guys like me, and making most of it understandable. appreciate you!
Good video as always. If you are using windows GRC has a Domain Name Speed Benchmark that will test resolve times against all of the popular DNS providers or any you would like to add and break them down by speed. It takes some time to perform the benchmark but will give you more accurate results because it is resolving websites.
4:17 you could've done this on the end user device, your phone, your computer, your console. You just have to go to your internet settings for your network device. You can also adjust your MTU size, which can reduce ping latency.
@@ProudTM The MTU size will be depended on your connection, in my case mine is 1375, But you'll need to do your own ping test to see if your packets are missed, It's very quick and easy to work out the best MTU size for your home connection, There are plenty of videos out there how to setup MTU size, The best one in my opinion is from "Home Network Geek" titled "How to Speed up Your Home Network by Changing the MTU Size"
Almost 20 minutes to get to setting custom DNS. Really. Domain Name Service dates from 1983. You’ll find it defined in the IETF RFC series if you want to get a better understanding of it than you show in this video. Changing DNS servers may help with responsiveness of DNS lookups, but will not improve traffic throughput. Once your application has the IP address of the server it’s talking to, DNS is no longer in the picture.
I used to use Google's DNS at home. One time, I did a traceroute on CloudFront (AWS's CDN). I saw it go down to somewhere in the US. I live in Québec, why didn't it route me to Montréal's servers? So I used dig to compare the IPs returned by Google, CloudFlare, and TekSavvy's (my ISP) DNS servers, and did some traceroute on the IP addresses. Only TekSavvy's servers sent me IP addresses assigned to servers that are closer to me. So, If your ISP takes care of their DNS servers, you might get better geolocation routing and DNS performance than with Google or CloudFlare.
Great video as always. Thanks for all the great Starlink tips and info on how to have the best Starlink experience as possible. Very much appreciated. Keep up the great work. 7:45 pm
This would be irellelavant to most online games. Once you resolve dns your connected over another communication protocol. This impacts initial resolution to the location your going. So, this would be basic web browsing. Which is impacted by speedify anyways. I cant imagine a game resolving multiple domain names over and over. My credentials, BA in computer science, Masters in Info tech management, 20 years industry experience.
I just switched from using the Starlink Router to TP Link X60 Mesh System that has 3 parts to it. The first is set up as the main router via the ethernet adapter to the Starlink Router that is bypassed and the other two mesh units are used to extend the WiFi signal thru out my house. Where do I change the DNS settings? Do I change them in the TP Link app setup or my computer setting?
My wife works from home and the company she works for has all kinds of safety stuff set up to keep their connections secure as possible. If I change the DNS will it cause their system to not recognize it anymore and lock her out? They had to change something on their end when we switched from DSL Centurylink to Starlink.
The info that you put out for Starlink is great. I wish I could justify the cost, but T-mobile is currently better for speed /dollar. Hopefully Starlink's speed will get super fast making it reasonable in the future.
Thanks for your help, it didn’t work for me YET, looks like I am having different issues with my Starlink that need to be resolved before I can do this redundancy technique. Thanks again for all your advice and hard work 👍🙏✌️❤️
What Starlink support said. Thanks for reaching out to Starlink customer support, and sorry for the late response. The first gen round dishes will receive the same treatment as all other dishes. We hope this answers your question. We'll be closing this ticket, but don't hesitate to reach out to us in the future if you have any other questions. Thank you, Starlink Suppor
Hopefully this fixes the constant packet loss I’ve had the last month I have no other internet options it’s been shit. Any tips for packet loss gaming has been rough to say the least lately
I wish i understood what your talking about. I just couldnt track on this. I dont have a background in this area, so it's like a foreign language hearing for the first time.
Yours promotions and begging for donations are preventing me from watching you next time!! Thanks for the core information that i got it in 10 in total, while 15 were a waste of time on promoting and begging and extra talking… Regards keep up the good
This was one of your best videos.... I was able to follow along with you. In my case, the performance was close with a sight edge to Cloudflare. So, like you, I am using Cloudflare as my primary and Google as my secondary. I will see if I notice anything new.... Thanks...
Nice video. Have a question and I cannot find a reliable answer anywhere online. I have a Deco mesh router system with three routers throughout the home because I get better coverage this way. Should I use the mesh system in access point mode and leave the Starlink router bypass disabled or should I be using the mesh system as the router and enabling bypass mode on the Starlink?service seems to be fine either way when I test it but I’m not sure which one is built for better latency and speed numbers.
Thanks again for giving such clear explanations. I noticed when you had the time out the other two had high pings around the same time. I did a check like you said, set it up and went to town for supper. Copied and parsed the information in Excel. Just over 8900 pings and Google and CloudFlare were almost identical in performance. OpenDNS had less timeouts but overall had more >55 ms pings. Great idea about setting up secondary from a different provider.
I volunteer for search and rescue also disaster communications. I got a starlink mini a couple weeks ago. i have been using it on missions in deep canyons with tall trees about 20% of sky. pretty much we just point it at a patch of open sky and hope for the best. tracking? I am wondering if it is best to orientate it N then just tilt it towards the open patch or just aim the the whole panel towards the open patch.
changed to opendns - 0 packet loss, best over latency, secondary cloudflare will run speedtest script next week and let you know the difference compared to last month

Wow! That was awesome! Thanks for the new update and why/how. I made the changes and right away, my DL and UL speeds improved by about 25% on my first test. I'll continue to test this. Thanks again!
Surprising. It normally does not effect up/dw speeds that much unless you where having issue with DNS before. That’s awesome.
3:55 “Lets get right into this.”
Skip ahead for the actual video. Sigh
18:25 for those that want to know how.
Thank you for giving us where to find the actual answer
I ended up with Google and OpenDNS, just SW of Portland Or.
Awesome
Im getting great speed in rural Saskatchewan Canada with this method, 245mbps down and 30mbps up at times.
Learn something everyday. I never knew how to test this theory. Very smart
Thank you for this man. Been gaming on starlink for over a year and sometimes the ping can be a little high so I'm definitely going to try this. 👍🏻
Very welcome.. hope it helps at least a little bit.
Absolutely. But fast and error free DNS resolution does help
Wow! What a difference this video made for us! Super fast response, now. Thanks!
So glad to hear D W
Like the way you breakdown DNS and all those technical terms am subscribing to your channel. Do give more talks explaining how we can apply these internet terms
What a great explanation! Thank you for helping me understand DNS. I am on Starlink's wait list, and I appreciate all the information you share with us.
Fingers crossed for you!! Thanks for being here.
Since we talked about this on friday night live chat, I've seen an improvement in random sites and apps that seem to freeze in the initial loading stage. Early days but hoping this is going to be the final fix in what has become a very stable ISP!
We will see. Fingers crossed.
Good info, however, I took their router out of my loop and use a TP-Link router. I use Google as my primary DNS and Cloudflare as my secondary. It helps... it really does.
This is incredible! Thanks for walking me through this. I game through starlink so I’m hoping to try this and get better ping!
Let us know. Many blessings.
so do I and it's exhausting trying to figure out better options during peak hours when trying to play fps games. packet loss and burst every 2 or 3 minutes is unreasonable.
What's the verdict???
did it work?
Elon needs to hire you on as chief of customer service. Great educational video. Thank you!
You’re way to kind. It would be an honor to work with @elonmusk wow!! 😜 Many blessings.
Cool, just set mine up. I saw it there but had not looked into it yet. Thanks.
🍵👍🏻🍵👍🏻
Dude you have some good info but I can’t watch your videos. Too much fluff please get to the point!
Wow…thanks for upping my game
If you turn on the filtering for malware it will change the dns to 1.1.1.2 and 1.0.0.2 and if malware and adult is turned on it uses 1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3 with Cloudflare
I’m happy that Elon decided to go with. Loud flare over Google. Thank you so much for the info.
If I have bypass SkylinkNet and using my own router do I need to do these things
Man you have A LOT of knowledge. Thank you for the help
You are to kind. Thank you.
I second that thanks again Mr. JCristina
Sweet. Doubled my speed down and up.
Thank you! GREAT STUFF!!!
Thanks so much for your kindness.
Is there a site one can go to and type in their zip code and it gives you the nearest Public DNS Servers?
So I have mine set up with the Wi-Fi turned off on my star link router and then putting the data into a TP Link router and using that for my Wi-Fi. Do I still do the DNS in the star link or do I do it in the TP router?
just get strait to the answer man. Dont waste peoples time unnecessary music or words.....
That's a bit rude. He does this for free to help us out that don't know how. Figure it out on your own if you don't like his presentation
Just stop. I said at the begin of the video if you want to remain stupid and only the HOW and not the WHY behind the process fast forward.

forward???
Dam rude. Figure it out yourself, or fast forward free education sharing.
@@jcristina Yea, but fast forward to what.. you didn’t even segment your video to groups of information…..
Switched to cloudflare, then googe, looks to be the better option for my location. Ty J
Awesome.
How to do it guide starts around 18:20
Thanks Sky. Like I said at the beginning. If you don’t want to learn anything fast forward to the end.
@@jcristina I actually watched through it all, just thought it would be useful for those who dont want to.
Holy crap thank you! I understand he’s trying to get more play time by putting the info at the end of the video but damn 18 mins later….
Good video as always. If you are using windows GRC has a Domain Name Speed Benchmark that will test resolve times against all of the popular DNS providers or any you would like to add and break them down by speed. It takes some time to perform the benchmark but will give you more accurate results because it is resolving websites.
Love to share. DM me at JCristina.com/contract appreciate it. Blessings.
this feature has been visible in our app for months - have been using cloudflare and google as a backup now for quite some time.
Awesome.
4:17 you could've done this on the end user device, your phone, your computer, your console. You just have to go to your internet settings for your network device. You can also adjust your MTU size, which can reduce ping latency.
Absolutely.
what's an ideal MTU size that isn't your typical 1500 that will work the best with online gaming?
@@ProudTM The MTU size will be depended on your connection, in my case mine is 1375, But you'll need to do your own ping test to see if your packets are missed, It's very quick and easy to work out the best MTU size for your home connection, There are plenty of videos out there how to setup MTU size, The best one in my opinion is from "Home Network Geek" titled "How to Speed up Your Home Network by Changing the MTU Size"

Yes thanks so much for telling us how to prepare for that doomsday scenario where google goes down .
That’s a really long video just to explain that there is a new config option for DNS at the Starlink app.
Well, now I know. I've always wondered about DNS and thanks for teaching me :) will
Test this on macbook and change DNS
It works man. Great! Thanks
Glad it helped
I already had these options in my TP Link Router. All of you had this option if you had your Starlink in wifi in bypass mode
Facts. No they can do it without a third party router which is nice.
7:45 pm
Truly appreciate it.
This would be irellelavant to most online games. Once you resolve dns your connected over another communication protocol. This impacts initial resolution to the location your going. So, this would be basic web browsing. Which is impacted by speedify anyways. I cant imagine a game resolving multiple domain names over and over.

It you bypassed the Starlink router, you will change your DNS setting in you X60. Check out its manual.
i9'm pretty sure you could always go in the router by typing in the address bar and set your dns, all routers have a dns dialog in them.
My wife works from home and the company she works for has all kinds of safety stuff set up to keep their connections secure as possible. If I change the DNS will it cause their system to not recognize it anymore and lock her out? They had to change something on their end when we switched from DSL Centurylink to Starlink.
It should not. You can try and switch it back it there is an issue but I think you will be fine.
Thanks for giving such clear explanations... do u know how to change the default ip address from starlink router to another ip address .. Thanks
I've been able to change my DNS for like a year already in Canada .

Sorry for probably a simple question. If I need to switch back, is it a matter of a reset or disabling the custom DNS toggle?
Yep. Factory Reset.
Thanks. Great explanation and demo of DNS, and setup.
Thank you for watching.
Another great Starlink video. Thanks!
Great as always J...I will be trying this.
Thank you!
This is one of your best! 👏👏👏
You’re too kind Arne. Thank you!
Awesome info!!! We are fulltime rving and working mobile. Thank you
The info that you put out for Starlink is great. I wish I could justify the cost, but T-mobile is currently better for speed /dollar. Hopefully Starlink's speed will get super fast making it reasonable in the future.
T-Mobile has been great for me here too
T-Mobile has turned to garbage for me. Constant disconnects after many phone calls and changing the gateway.

How to address the “slow ethernet lan link” in Starlink despite cable Ethernet replacement.

DNS stands for domain naming service
Thanks
It’s it’s working without having to bypass. Leave it alone.
THANKS
Thank you
very nice content sir.. im gonna considering follow you since it will be great help for me. just got my starlink.

Great info. Thanks for the confirmation.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support!!!
As always, another great video. I agree, it's important to know the why, not just the how. Many thanks.
Thank you Howard.
Thanks for the information.. I'll be trying this when I get home. How would we enter ms-dos on a Mac?? Many blessings to you and your family
changed to opendns - 0 packet loss, best over latency, secondary cloudflare will run speedtest script next week and let you know the difference compared to last month

Will this work when in bypass mode with the ethernet adapter?
Yes but you will need to make the DNS changes I your third-party router instead of Starlink router
