We have been living off the grid for the past eight months or so and while we have a power inverter, it isn’t wireless. This is a problem for us because our internet runs off the inverter and we have to go outside to turn it off when we’re done! If we’re falling asleep, we hate to wake up to turn the internet off because then we can’t go back to sleep! If we leave the internet on all night, then we wake up to an almost-dead trailer battery, so we decided that for our own sanity and rest, we needed to find a wireless solution.
This proved to be a challenge to find as there simply aren’t many wireless, remote control power inverters! We randomly saw one at a truck stop and made a special trip to go pick it up! Best of all, it’s controllable via Bluetooth through our smart phones! How is that for embracing technology while living off grid?

About that particular inverter, they are Truckstop toys that I have seen problems with the grounding lug next to the cooling fan. When you mount the unit, the ground lug located in the plasic back cover mounting frame location

The thing that worries me a little is that you've spent a fair amount of money on a piece of equipment you will likely upgrade on in the near future. So in this case its a $180 that probably could have been used on your next power system. Your video's are great, it will be interesting to follow your journey. I own an off grid cabin myself but only live there part time. In the winter time I do fill the water system with glycol and use an outhouse. In the summer collect rain water, rarely do I need to haul water, there is enough for hot showers, flush toilet and stuff. Freezing temperatures in the winter definitely does present challenges. I agree a cistern is probably the way to go.
Very nice. Now I have another option to power my cpap besides the deep cell marine battery I have for camping.

Can’t believe I’m just now seeing this video. I have the 3000watt version. It has worked great 3 years now. I’ve powered a microwave a industrial heat gun for repairing tarps. Sorry I said the four letter word. Lol my cooling fans either have never came on or I’ve just never heard it.

hey, you mentioned at the end that you run your internet off of your inverter. Can you tell me why you chose to do this? All electronics are 12v. Wouldn't it be better to have it powered directly off your battery bank which is 12v?

nice little bit of information. I like to see people working outside the box. Like to see more technology that can help with the off grid life. Keep up the good videos. Don't listen to the nay sayers. They have there own agenda and are jealous of the things you do and provide.
+Jqw Wqj It's hard for many to tolerate a difference of opinion or open their minds to there being different ways to do things, so negative comments are to be expected when publicizing your life :-) We try to build what relationships we can, share tips with who we can, and leave the rest to be. It is interesting that the off grid way of living is the way things were done in the past, but technology isn't bad either, so we're trying to take advantage of both worlds and see where it leads! Some who live off grid do it because they are anti-technology, but we embrace it and use it to our advantage. Happy to share what we learn and this is why we share the products we use - some things are quite helpful and while someone can do this type of thing with zero tools and zero technology, it would be a challenge. We aren't doing this to be romantic, we simply want to be self-sustainable and build our home without going into massive debt. Pretty simple!
I was actually Just looking at this inverter yesterday. but I wanted/want and usually require and always recommend a Pure Sine Wave inverter. so I was bummed that it was a Modified Sine wave. but if it is okay for you then good and it's great to see a video on it anyway.
What happens when the cell towers stop working? Going off grid means everything. I love manual control when it comes to my power needs. My Honda genset is 3k and pure sine. Look for good solar to charge car batteries. Mine charges my deep cycle RV battery fine.
What's the sign wave about? so a mini fridge that runs let's say in a college dorm room wouldn't be able to run off this?

Hello I have a question for you I bought piwerdrive 3000 w established in Truck and he does not pull the microwave 700w off and on again, what's the problem?

You said that it is a modified sine wave inverter. Electronics are usually the most sensitive to that, but you said that you use it for internet purposes... and I assume aren't having any problems. Have you run into anything that didn't work on this modified sine wave?
+Christian Swensen No issues presently or for the last 8 months. You have to realize nearly everything we run is battery powered such as cell phones, laptops, camera, walkie talkies so all we are running is chargers which are presently run off our generator which is pure sine and powers our RV where we charge all these things. The only thing we power with this inverter is the Internet antenna and router. As of current we have had no issues with our either device, but those devices run small converters at the outlet to adjust voltage and current likely having a some filtering effect.
Can you turn off / on individual outlets or it's just works all at same time?
I love what the two of you are doing and the videos you create are great. It must have missed it, but what hardware do you have to receive Internet?

That is pretty cool, It does make me wonder what kinda of amps it uses with the extra features, still cool though. I personally use a 70 watt inverter most of the time cause it doesn't use much amps converting the dc to ac, i can usually run a laptop, 4-5 lights a radio, 5 security cameras, a router and modem all on just one 70 watt inverter i only use a bigger one if i have to i need to get a new nice pure sin wave too i keep burning up fans and such. I did make some videos about my setup feel free to check em out and subscribe.
Be careful with recharging tool batteries the way way I understand my inverter and Ryobi batteries is they can not be recharged with modified sine wave I will ruin them. I would love to know how this works out long term for you. Good luck.

my phone is a TV, a stereo, a map, a library, and so much more...this would be good if you are pulling up to your place in the middle of the night and you wanted a porch light, hook it up go come home remote start...

No problem done some camping and am now clearing land we will live on one day in the Ozarks, love the on demand light with no power running while I'm gone idea!

I assume it's not a pure sine wave inverter, so don't be surprised if some things don't run right. Be especially carefully with battery chargers and motor driven products. Motors tend to overheat with these. It can also shorten a product's life. Sadly, there's no reference list of what works and what doesn't with modified sines waves. For a reliable RV solar setup, you would stay with only name brand electronics from Morningstar, Magnum, Outback, Bogart Engineering, (In other words, expensive). With other brands it's a crap shoot as to how long they last.

It's fairly safe for computers, which is why UPS battery backups use modified sine waves. Digital clocks have a hard time though.

You should do an internet how to video.
Modified sine wave inverters are NOT good for running motors. They will have less power and will run hotter.
The best batteries for an inverter (power and durability) are GOLF CART batteries ! You can get them at Sams Club or Costco. They are 6V so you will need 2 in order to make 12V. Unfortunately, recharging them from a car is not optimal.

I guess one gets what they pay for. Modified Sine Wave inverters are inefficient and tend to make any electric motor/fan overheat.
Sorry...hit send too soon. When you run the ground wire to the mounting frame on earlier units, with heavy loads on the inverter, the plastic around the lug melted (2 new units).The truckstop wouldn't allow the customer to return the unit without the original packaging. If you notice any heating of that lug, you might want try the Coleman inverter's sold at those same Truckstops. They don't make a remote controlled unit, but they last 5 or more years trouble free. Also 12v dc inverted to120v AC is 10 X AMPS or a lot of heat and current. Those 4 Guage battery cables could be bigger to handle the higher amps. 3/0 would be quite safe. Anyway, keep up the good work. Look forward to the next project...T

+Tom Bottoms thank you the tip Tom! For this particular inverter we have no intentions of loading it heavily. We replaced a 300w inverter so it's load is small. In fact so small or doesn't even register on the inverter. That said we will keep an eye on it if ever we use it at full capacity. Melted lugs sounds terrible!
+Mike Brink The lugs appear to be a coated copper so perhaps it's zinc coating. I'll try to remember to take a closer look tomorrow and post up. I'll just say this isn't the inverter you'd want if you plan load it to the hilt. It's a decent built budget inverter with features we simply couldn't find anywhere else. The wireless was the selling point. We nearly bought a wired cobra and I'm glad we didn't. The wireless keeps our setup cleans and it works great for the application.
I ran the predecessor to this model for 5 years in a work truck and never had issues.
Ran a laser printer no problems and took the abuse.

It may seem that we're busy doing nothing when we post these videos, but the irony is that every day, we are trying to put ourselves in the position where we can start our barn. Just today we were able to get some 3d mockups of the barn layout which is a step in the right direction. To those that have not taken this type of journey, it may seem that building a home is as easy as 1-2-3 but in reality, it takes a lot for construction to even begin. Many may not like that harsh reality (reality is tough for many people to swallow which is why many never take action in the first place), but on our channel we try to show what the reality of this type of journey looks like. Often, it means things don't get done as quickly as we would like. We are in no particular rush and are okay for waiting until the timing is right. If that doesn't jive with you personally, that's totally okay!
Hello pure living for life couple I rely like your videos but if you could number them ,or date them every one could watch them in order. I started watching them then found out I was some what watching them in revurse .
Not trying to be a Safety Troll, but I guess I am.....@3:10 you are hooking the Positive Cable to your car/truck battery with the Negative cable connected...dangerous in that if you swung that wrench and it hit the frame...big a** spark and could destroy your wrench/battery/etc......I've been close when this has happened...not pretty.
So disconnect the Negative Terminal from the Battery...do your Positive stuff and then reconnect Negative Cable and do that stuff.

2000 unread emails lmao Be careful charging your devices through usb without the original manufacturer block that it comes with. I fried the motherboard on one of my phones doing that once. You also shouldn't completely deplete or charge the new lithium batteries 100% I charge at around 25% and stop charging at about 75% as a rule of thumb.Most devices come out of the factory charged at about 50% as this is where the battery is most "comfortable". I'm not really completely sure about the details but it stresses the battery at either end of the spectrum reducing the functionality and life time. Should be pretty easy to find info on it though. Maybe you were already aware but maybe not.

using those usb ports for charging is pointless if they only work when the inverter is powered on. your phone and tablets charge on dc so inverting to ac then converting to dc is inefficient.
that's not a large fan compared to others on inverters this size. That small, cheap, inefficient fan must spin faster and make more noise than a large fan would and it cools less effectively. a 2000w inverter with 1 fan that size will either sag to surge or barely surge, if at all.
there are very informative inverter vids on RUclips, by knurlgnar24 and others, that would serve one well to watch before making inverter purchases.
+mwilliamshs Off grid has different definitions to different people. We choose not to engage in these arguments because we'd rather develop our property! Our definition is that we're not tied to the power grid - not that we use zero technology.

+mwilliamshs Many people enjoy picking that argument :-) We are part of many off grid groups and turn our heads when this argument is brought up. People spend a phenomenal amount of time arguing about the technicalities of the definition, which means that nobody is actually making progress in life. They're just spending hours debating when they could be building a house :-) In the end, our home will eventually be built and those people will still be bickering on whether or not we are technically off grid! We're glad you enjoy our channel!
